ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Which is more nutritional: brown eggs or white eggs?

The color of the eggs doesn't matter. Both are equally
nutritional and taste the same. The reason some eggs
are brown is because they are laid by rust-red chickens
(such as the Rhode Island Red). White eggs come from
white chickens (such as the White Leghorn). Some people
believe that brown eggs are more nutritional (perhaps
on observing that brown flour, brown bread and brown
sugar are), but they're mistaken.

When did the Internet come into being?

We've become so used to it that it's hard to imagine life
without the Internet! While many of us started surfing the
Web only in the past few years, the Internet has actually
been around since 1969. It was created by the Department
of Defense as a decentralized communications system in
the event of nuclear attack. It was also used to coordinate
military research projects, and was expanded to help
universities doing defense-related research. However, it
was a different system than used today without web
browsers, banner ads, and lots of graphical bells and
whistles. HTML and web pages are a fairly new face put
on an existing infrastructure.

Revised Spyware Bill Moves Ahead
by Michael Grebb (Wired News)

WASHINGTON -- A key committee in the U.S. House of
Representatives unanimously approved anti-spyware
legislation Wednesday that includes revisions designed
to make the bill more palatable to business interests.

HR29, the Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber
Trespass Act, or Spy Act, is sponsored by Rep. Mary
Bono (R-California). It aims to prevent spyware
purveyors from hijacking a homepage or tracking users'
keystrokes, requires that spyware programs be easily
identifiable and removable, and allows for the
collection of personal information only after express
consent is given by users.

The bill also exponentially increases fines against
abusers, authorizing the Federal Trade Commission to
fine violators up to $3 million per infraction.

"To my mind, invading a personal computer is no
different than breaking and entering a person's home,"
said House Commerce Committee chairman Joe Barton
(R-Texas). "Those who do it are crooks, if not strictly
burglars.... I want the FTC to go after them with a
vengeance."

Some technology companies, concerned that overzealous
anti-spyware legislation could sweep up legitimate
software in its dragnet, have in recent weeks
successfully lobbied for changes that narrow the bill's
scope.

In February, Rep. Clifford Stearns (R-Florida),
chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and
Consumer Protection, attached an amendment that would
exempt software cookies, including third-party cookies,
from the spyware definitions covered by the bill.

That amendment also exempted embedded ads on web pages
from the bill's requirement that online ads (often
pop-ups that appear without a site's sanction) include
identifying information so consumers can find and
remove the software causing them.

On Wednesday, Stearns introduced a new amendment that
would create another exemption, this time for web
"beacons" (HTML and JavaScript that facilitate the
ordinary construction of web pages but don't monitor
consumers' behavior or gather information about those
users). Such code wouldn't be considered spyware under
the bill's new provisions.

New language also affirms that companies can monitor
activity on their own websites, and direct advertising
of their own products based on that monitoring, without
being subject to the bill's notice-and-consent
provision.

In addition to other technical changes, Stearns'
amendment would create a new prohibition on "evil twin"
attacks, in which hackers create malicious Wi-Fi
hotspots in order to lure unsuspecting users. Once the
user logs in, the hacker can intercept data or direct
users to spoof sites designed to collect personal
information.

While the bill received unanimous approval from the
Commerce Committee (and is expected to garner wide
support in the full House), there remained lingering
concerns about certain provisions that could lead to
more tinkering before the bill hits the House floor.

Ranking committee member Rep. John Dingell (D-Michigan)
said he's worried the bill's cookie exemption might be
too broad.

"At least with respect to cookies, we need to make sure
that we are not creating dangerous loopholes that are
inconsistent with the purposes of this legislation," he
said.

Despite such concerns, however, HR29 appears on the
fast track for passage this year. One potential hurdle
is the Senate, which failed to enact its own
anti-spyware legislation in the last session even after
the House passed last year's version of Bono's bill by
an overwhelming 399-1 vote.

Although the House bill still has no companion
legislation in the Senate, Sen. Conrad Burns
(R-Montana), who introduced the companion bill that
failed to pass last year, plans to reintroduce
anti-spyware legislation "in the next one or two
months," his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Barton said he's confident anti-spyware legislation
will pass the full Congress this year.

"In fact, I'm going to make it a personal mission that
HR29 gets to the president's desk as soon as possible,"
he said.

In addition to the HR29 markup in the Commerce
Committee, the full House Judiciary Committee on
Wednesday approved S167/HR357, known as the Family
Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005, which passed
the Subcommittee on the Courts, the Internet and
Intellectual Property on March 3. The full Senate
passed its identical version of the bill Feb. 1.

The legislation would affirm the legality of software
such as ClearPlay, which automatically edits supposedly
objectionable scenes out of popular movies. Several DVD
players now come ClearPlay-enabled and work with more
than 1,000 movie titles.

Some Hollywood directors and studios argue that such
altering of their works without permission violates
their copyright.

But bill sponsor and subcommittee chairman Rep. Lamar
Smith (R-Texas) has championed the measure as
pro-family.

"Parents should be able to mute or skip over anything
they want if they feel it's in the best interests of
their children," he said.

Supporters want to pass the bill before the Supreme
Court hands down a decision in the Grokster
peer-to-peer case, which could alter interpretation of
copyright law and therefore stall any pending copyright
bills. The Court, which will hear oral arguments March
29, is expected to issue a Grokster decision this
summer.

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 6 of 11

It’s great to discuss micro-organisms but by
themselves, they don’t do any harm. The risk is present
when a debilitated person meets the pathogen
micro-organisms. This person would be called the “host”
because inadvertently they have invited the
micro-organisms into their body, where they are allowed
to grow. A disease causing micro-organisms is not a
risk without a host who is not at risk. A weakened or
low-resistant host without a disease-causing
micro-organism doesn’t have a problem until the risk
appears. So the entire control emphasis is to prevent
the host and the pathogen from ever meeting.

Hospital personnel already know that some areas are
more vulnerable than others because of the type of
person cared for there. Babies in a nursery have far
less resistance to potentially harmful living things
than adults do. We know that generally elderly adults
have less resistance than younger, healthy ones. People
on drugs that suppress their immune system are very
much less resistant and thus more susceptible to
disease. New post op patients are also very vulnerable
to infections. In this case, their open surgical site
is the best possible place for micro-organisms to grow.
Hence the need for specialized, “off limit” locations
with stringent rules for personnel, practices,
supplies, and equipment. Bioburden is measured very
carefully in these areas and problems are handled
immediately.

To find a source of micro-organisms you don’t have to
look very far. They can be as close as a curtain, the
floor, a bed or unclean linen. They might be located in
droplets from a sneeze or a cough. They could be found
on surgical instruments in the operating rooms or it
could encompass an entire corridor. It could be any
object that transfers the “living object
(micro-organism)” from one person to another person or
thing: directly or indirectly.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.

"Honey, I'll be back in a while." Sam spoke to
Alewka and then both he and Maz were off.

They arrived at the scene and materialized on
the water. The man was not only bad hurt but was
now beginning to take on water. He was a mess. The
onlookers in the boat were terrified. All were
afraid their friend was dead or at least dying.

Sam raised his arms. Instantly there was a
peace that came over the area. The people in the
boat felt it. Even all waves calmed to stillness.
The area was charged with energy.

Mazunta walked to the man's head. Gently he
reached down and lifted it out of the water. The
man unwittingly felt energy coming into him
through the top of his head. He was still in
shock and dumfounded, not sure what was happening,
yet the energy Maz gave him was sufficient for him
to open his eyes.

Sam moved to his feet. Causing the palms of
his hands to face the man Sam did what has
happened so many times before. The beams of energy
were brilliant and almost blinding, Sam spoke
quietly. "Rise up and walk." The sound
reverberated around the lake. The command left no
alternative available to the man. He literally had
no choice. The instant he applied energy to that
task his body became restored to perfect. He lost
all feeling of pain, regained his consciousness
and with a mighty heave, stood up.

It did not register with the man he was
standing on water. He only knew he was among those
who helped him. He reached out his hand to thank
Sam, and then Mazunta, each of whom was ready.

Suddenly it hit him. He was standing on water.
He immediately sank and had to tread water.

His buddies called to him to get into the
boat.

The man swam over to the boat and got up on
the swim platform, then into the boat. Without any
word the boat took off, leaving Sam and Mazunta
standing there.

Then the man who had come to get Sam was
coming up to them fast. Sam looked and sure enough
there was a doctor in the boat with him. The boat
slowed, then stopped. "Where is he?"

"He is fine. He is in perfect shape, got back
into his boat and they left, that way." Sam
pointed.

The two men in the boat suddenly realized Sam
and Mazunta were standing there on the water. They
couldn't believe their eyes. "Ar ... ar ... are
yo... you sure he's all right?" The young man
asked.

"We're sure." answered Sam. "You can take the
doctor over to your friends house if you wish and
see for yourself."

"I think I'll do that." And with that the
second boat sped away.

"Polite aren't they?" observed Mazunta.

"Don't worry about it. Let's go finish our
coffee."

With that the pair of them disappeared only to
reappear on the porch, where Alewka had poured a
fresh, hot cup of coffee. Sam went up to her and
gave her a kiss on the cheek.

"All is well. Thanks for the fresh coffee."

"You're welcome. I trust the young man learned
a lesson."

"You just never know, sweetheart. Once they
all knew he was fine they tore off out of there as
if we were holding guns on them. It didn't take
very long for the young man who came over here to
clear out either. Oh well!"

Sam looked at Mazunta "Life in the fast lane,
right Maz?"

"If you say so Sam. Folks are like that the
world over."

"Yeah, I know."

All four adults sat on the porch sipping at
coffee for the next couple hours. Their together
time was interrupted only by lunch and that
ritual. Along about two in the afternoon a boat
pulled up to the dock, a man got out and was
walking up to the Henry cabin. Sam and Mazunta
recognized immediately the man was the doctor they
saw in the second boat.

"Welcome doctor. What can we do for you
today?"

"I came over for two reasons, Mr. Henry. The
first was to thank you for saving that young man's
life. I don't know what you did but from what that
group was telling me he was pretty torn up. I
don't know if I could have saved him. Thank you."

"You are most welcome, and the second thing?"

TODAY'S REPORT:

Wouldn't you know it, March is doing it's thing here. Up to
now we have had beautiful spring weather. Today I'm
looking at three inches of snow. Mind you, that's not too
bad. It is dry and fluffy, it can be swept easy, plus, this could
be the last snow this spring. March is like that.

I have to go into town again today so I must hurry to get
my web work done as well as my writing. It takes discipline
to get thePEBBLE out on a daily basis.

HA! HA! HA!

Here are a few notes taken from hospital charts - - -

She slipped on the ice and apparently her legs went in
separate directions in early December.

The patient experienced sudden onset of severe
shortness of breath with a picture of acute pulmonary
edema at home while having sex which gradually
deteriorated in the emergency room.

The patient had waffles for breakfast and anorexia for
lunch.

Between you and me, we ought to be able to get this
lady pregnant.

The patient was in his usual state of good health until
his airplane ran out of gas and crashed.

Since she can't get pregnant with her husband, I
thought you would like to work her up.

She is numb from her toes down.

While in the ER, she was examined, X-rated and sent
home.

The skin was moist and dry.

Occasional, constant, infrequent headaches.

Coming from Detroit, this man has no children.

Patient was alert and unresponsive.

When she fainted, her eyes rolled around the room.

MD during a physical exam, stated, in my ears, "I am
unable to arouse this woman", personally, I really
don't think he should have bragged about it.
