TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What modern convenience frightened
President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)?

Who first used the phrase "third world"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

When was the first television broadcast in the US?

In 1927, an image of Herbert Hoover (who was secretary
of commerce and not president yet), was broadcast from
Washington DC to New York.

When was the first criminal convicted using DNA
"fingerprinting"?

DNA evidence helped to convict a man in England of rape
and murder in 1988. DNA fingerprinting can also clear
suspects, of course, and has been used in the past few
years to exonerate people unjustly convicted of serious
crimes.

Here's To Think On
with Ken Darby
-----------------

I Wonder Who's Dumber?

There was a little boy named Johnny who used to hang out at
the local corner market. The owner didn't know what
Johnny's problem was, but the boys would constantly tease
him.

They would always comment that he was two bricks shy of a
load or two pickles short of a barrel. To prove it,
sometimes they would offer Johnny his choice between a
nickel (5 cents) and a dime (10 cents) and Johnny would
always take the nickel (they said) because it was bigger.

One day after Johnny grabbed the nickel, the store owner
took him aside and said "Johnny, those boys are making fun
of you. They think you don't know the dime is worth more
than the nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it's
bigger, or what?"

With a big grin on his face, Johnny slowly turned toward
the store owner. "Well," he answered, "If I took the dime,
they'd stop doing it, and so far I've saved $20!"

Clever huh? You bet! Johnny had them all stumped
because he had control of his ego. Most of us would
retaliate to the continual teasing. Johnny, on the other
hand, knew full well his life did not depend on what
those around him thought of him and, in actual fact, he
was playing them for fools because their egos
permitted it.

You see, Johnny did not have to belong to the crowd.
He was quite happy with himself and needed no one
else to tell him he was great. He needed no support
group around him. He could live out his life doing
his thing.

That's a valuable lesson to learn. Often I am amused
at those who need a television on all day, or a radio,
or a light in the hallway at night. Try going through a
day without any of those, all by yourself. If you do it
regular you begin to find yourself. You will find you
don't need all the noise or attention getting devices.
Then you begin to "listen" to what you are being told
from the "inside".

There is another lesson in here, too. That lesson is,
like Johnny, keep your business to yourself. You don't
have to let others know what you're up to. Johnny
didn't let anyone know until the grocer pressed him.
Look at the advantage he had.

I Wonder Who's Dumber?

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 7 of 11

As already mentioned, the infection “control” goal is
always to keep the unhealthy person separated from the
pathogen. It takes far fewer pathogens (lower
bioburden) to create a disease in a debilitated person
than in a healthy one. So keep in mind that bioburden
measurement is very important. The goal is always to
interrupt their food supply or changing the environment
so it is not a happy place for them to grow. To check
if these goals are met or not met bioburden
measurements are explored. The goals have been met if
the disease is eliminated or the micro-organism level
is acceptable (not a risk any longer).

A while ago, I mentioned the curtains, floors, and
droplets. These are just a few of many ways that
pathogens re transmitted. These are “areas” where the
micro-organisms rest, but not necessarily multiply.
They often “catch a ride” on a dust particle, and flow
on air currents to another place. Now they are in a new
environment and could easily grow unnoticed. Activities
in Operating Rooms, laundry facilities, and waste
storage rooms all cause significant increases in the
microbial bioburden. Would you believe bed making is a
very large contributor to bioburden? All these areas
are connected through ventilation systems.  Can you
imagine how far they can travel? How widespread their
risk is shared?

That means pathogens  are transported through the air
on air currents. Or they could ride on droplets of
moisture usually from saliva from a cough. It might be
such things as bedpans or a vomit basin: it could be a
hand. Incidentally, research has shown that vomit can
carry a very high bioburden. It is seen as the vehicle
by which harmful microbes are spread. They are carried
along by dust particles. How does it get into the
person? Through any cuts on their skin, or most likely,
through their mucous membranes (nose mouth,
gastrointestinal tract). Remember too that your body
has natural instinct to prevent any such invasion, but
if you aren’t very healthy, this “mechanism is
unhealthy and weak too. Incidentally there is a cycle
of infection and it might well be the same person who
initiates the infection, receives it back again. But if
the bioburden is small, chances for infection are slim,
but as the bioburden increases, so does the risk.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"How did you do that? When we came up to you
in the boat you and this gentleman were just
standing there as if you were on dry land. I had a
good look at the young man and there is absolutely
nothing wrong with him. He didn't even have any
pain or discomfort anywhere. There wasn't much he
could remember, but he remembered getting hit,
then not being able to get his breath. The next
thing he could remember was a brilliant white
light that seemed to surround him. He said he felt
an amazing peace come over him and suddenly he
knew he was going to be fine. Then he said someone
called him and told him to get up. When he did you
and this gentleman were standing beside him. When
he realized he was standing on water he became
scared, sank and then swam for the boat. That, I
guess, is when they took off. The young man I was
with was scared to death. He thought for sure he
had killed a buddy. This whole experience will
give them all a lesson. They told me they had been
up all night drinking and just wanted to get an
early morning ski. How do you do the things you
do, Mr. Henry? At the hospital we can't even come
close."

"Dr. Jensen isn't it?"

"Oh, my God. I didn't even introduce myself.
I'm sorry. Yes, my name is Bill Jensen. I'm a
doctor at the Pinehill hospital."

"Hello, Bill. I'm Sam, and this is my wife
Alewka, my daughter Eloise, and her husband
Mazunta. Those yard apes you passed on your way up
here are our grandchildren."

Bill Jensen shook hands all the way around. He
felt the energy. He felt at peace and he felt the
love.

"Would you like to join us in a cup of
coffee?" Alewka was always the hostess.

"Yes, please. I have been thinking about that
incident today and I just can't get it out of my
mind. It is hard for me to believe. If the young
man was in the shape the others say he was he
should be dead. I can't believe you can do what
they said you did. I have heard stories around the
hospital too. They say you healed the wife of our
Police Chief."

Alewka brought Bill his coffee, and she
brought out the pot to warm up everyone else's.

"Bill, relax a little. There is nothing
amazing about it if you stop long enough to think
about it. We are doing only what is natural to do.
The difficulty you are having in understanding
what went on is based on you not reaching out to
gain the level of knowledge needed to understand.
You went to medical school and studied long and
hard to become a doctor. When you were in high
school you did not have the knowledge you now
have. All you had then was a desire to become a
doctor. Then you invested time, energy, money and
most of all, yourself, over a long period of time.
At the end of that time you can now call yourself
a doctor and you can now help mankind. There is
nothing different with what Mazunta and I do. In
fact Alewka and Eloise are masters as well."

"What do you mean, Masters?"

"All it means is that we have studied and
mastered what are known as spiritual laws."

"What are these laws? Why aren't there more
who practice them? How can I learn these laws?"

"Whoa, whoa! Slow down. Did you learn all
there was to learn in medical school in one
sitting?"

"No."

"That's right, and neither will you learn the
spiritual laws here, in the next fifteen minutes.
It is enough for you to have the curiosity. To
learn the spiritual laws places an enormous
responsibility on you. There is a price to pay. It
is therefore important you know and understand the
price before you decide whether you are willing to
pay it."

"I guess you're right. But this idea excites
me. I want to know all of it."

"Even if you have to give up medicine to learn
it?"

"Oh, well. What do you mean? I ... I ... I'm
not sure I want to give up medicine."

"That is what I mean, Bill. You must be aware
of the price you must pay before you make that
decision. Jesus taught us that we are to seek this
first, not second, not when we have time, not
after we have fulfilled responsibilities, but
first. What he means is that this knowledge must
be first in your life before anything else, at all
times. Nothing is more important, nothing. This
commitment is absolute. There are no gray areas.
You have to commit yourself to this against which
you accept no alternatives. This or nothing. Are
you prepared to pay such a price?"

TODAY'S REPORT:

Wow! Busy day today. I've been up for three hours and
going steady on stuff Mom wants done, and haven't even
yet gotten to my own daily chores, like thePEBBLE, and
other things.

Mom's home, and I'm home today. I like that. We haven't
kept up with a number of chores, what with being out of
the house and busy on other things, so today is the day.

his wife, they should fall to the floor.

The patient is tearful and crying constantly. She also
appears to be depressed.

Discharge status: Alive but without permission.
