What modern convenience frightened
President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)?
The President was afraid of ELECTRICITY and would not
touch the light switches after electricity was installed in the
White House. Harrison himself had the electricity installed,
but after the electrocution of convicted murderer
William Kemmler in the electric chair in 1890, he and his wife
lost their enthusiasm for electricity. The couple, like many
Americans of their day, were understandably fearful of this
awesome new invention (much like my grandmother who
feared radiation from microwave ovens when they first
came out!).
Who first used the phrase "third world"?
It was Indonesian President Sukarno who first used the
phrase "third world" in 1955. Sukarno was giving the opening
address at a conference attended by delegates from nearly
30 Asian and African countries. The term rapidly came to
refer to the generally nonwhite and underdeveloped
countries of the world.

Here's To Think On ...

Keeping Up With The Joneses
Five mornings a week, my husband goes to the health
club, gets on the stair-stepper, sets the timer, and buries
his nose in a book. Recently, he noticed an amazingly
fit middle-aged woman who seemed to run circles
around everyone, took few breaks, and rarely even
broke a sweat.
"It's not fair," he complained. "By the time I'm dragging
myself off to the showers, she's hopping back onto the
stepper for another session."
One day he came home with a sheepish grin. "Well,"
he said, "I just found out -- they're identical twins."
What a relief! Here he was trying to keep up only to find
there were two people doing the exercise routine, not one.
So many in life are like that too. They think they have to
keep up with all the things going on around them. That
applies especially to material goods. If the neighbors
have a new car, we have to get one. If they get a new
boat we have to get something comparable. If they
redecorate, we have to.
This kind of living is truly an exercise in futility. Can you
imagine permitting others to have that kind of control
over you? How many people have gone uncontrollably
into debt just trying to keep up the "image"? Can you
think of anything more foolish?
Learn to do your thing, not the Jones's thing. Not only
will trying to keep up your "image" drive you broke, it will
bring on frustration, anxiety and broken families. The
pattern is not a nice one and it never leads to happiness
or even success. Quite the contrary it more often leads
to trouble and disaster.
Lead your own life. That you do not have all the toys the
Jones' have likely means you also don't have the debt.
If they choose to lead their lives that way that is their
choice, just as living a calm, well managed life is your
choice.
The price is high when you try ...

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 8 of 11
Direct and indirect contact can also have Bioburden
measurements. In this case you touch the person
directly or you touch something that has relatively
high disease-causing bioburden, and then touch someone
else who is not as healthy as they should be. The
unhealthy person could then end up with the infection.
So touch is one way to spread an infection.
Harmful bugs or pathogens are everywhere. Learn things
to help you recognize some danger signs. Then be ready
with some prevention. In a hospital there is no time or
opportunity to look for them. So the intention is to
eliminate all predetermined places for them to live and
multiply. The goal is always to create a very hostile
environment.
As you can see from the examples above, the resting
spot for any pathogens can be any type of object:
animate or inanimate: living or not. Nothing much
happens if the host is inanimate unless its food and
temporary environment still provides a place to
survive. In an unfriendly environment, some grow a hard
shell (spore) and remain inactive till their living
conditions become friendly once more. Often the
micro-organisms just sit there until removed by
cleaning or an air current comes along and blows it to
a more favorable host. Can you understand now why
measuring the bioburden is vital?
One area that is often overlooked is general
ventilation. In a home, thats not too difficult to
check out: have your furnace or air conditioner filters
changed. Thus possibility of sending along hostile
micro-organisms is reduced. But in a health care
facility, cross contamination can create severe
results. Fungi are becoming much more prevalent,
resulting in higher bioburden counts. The fungi grow
well in soil, leaves, and living plants. It enters a
facility through all sorts of routes. Here the
micro-organisms are inhaled by the susceptible host and
causes a respiratory disease. Most hospitals have
routines for changing filters on all equipment. But
often that is not the source or route they travel.
They might be just sitting on your overbed table in the
form of a lovely bouquet of flowers or coming in on the
fresh breeze through the open window.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Not when you put it that way, Mr. Henry. I
would lose everything. I have worked too hard for
it. I don't want to risk it."
"That's an honest answer, Bill, and that
answers your question about why other men don't do
this. Their answer is the same as yours."
"I don't mean to be silly about this, Mr.
Henry, but that seems like too high a price to
pay."
"Again, Bill, I admire your candor. Stop and
think a minute, Bill. Is that not the price you
paid for your medical training?"
"I don't understand, Mr. Henry."
"When you came out of high school you had a
scholarship to medical school. You also had a
great deal of money saved up, and you received a
lot of money from your parents. Did you not risk
all of that plus all your time, plus all your
then present good times, so you could train for a
better future?"
"Well, when you put it that way, I guess I
did."
"Yet, here you are asked to do it again, with
the outcome being your ability to live by higher
law. That is the decision you must make. There is
nothing different here Bill. It is the same
procedure. You must commit or no results. In this
case, since you think you are risking much, you
must then give much. All or nothing. Yes or no.
There is no middle ground either in your answer or
in your commitment. It's the same as going into
medical school."
"Bu ... bu ..."
"Exactly. That is what I mean by knowing what
the price is before you make the decision."
Bill sat there, sipping his coffee.
Sam, Maz, Alewka and Eloise sat silent, yet
all broadcasting love unto Bill Jensen.
Finally, calmly and quietly Sam softly spoke.
"Bill, these things you must consider. It will
take time. You are not expected to commit here any
more than you would be on any other thing in your
life. As this is a life altering decision it is
necessary for you to give it much consideration.
All of us here know that. We all went through the
same thoughts. We all had to give up everything in
order to gain the knowledge."
"But look at this cabin. You didn't have to
give this up?" Bill's statement was a question.
"Yes, Bill. I had to give up everything, even
my children and my wife. I had to get to a point
where nothing was before my relationship with my
Maker, within. According to man's laws I own this
cabin. Yet in truth, no man ever owns anything.
The best he can hope for is to be able to use it
for a short time. In my Maker's world I own
nothing, neither do I want anything. Anything I
need I can manifest. That being the case then why
should I continually seek material goods, or
reputation, or having my ego stroked by others?
None of that does anything except interfere,
interrupt and impede my relationship with my
Maker. I will permit nothing to do that, Bill.
Neither does any master. Seek ye first the kingdom
of your Maker. Place nothing before you except
your Maker, and your Maker shall reward you."
"You make that sound harsh, Sam."
"Bill, tell me once again that isn't what you
did with medical school."
"Well, you're right. That's what I did. If I
didn't I would not have gotten through it."
"Yet, when the same rules apply here you think
it harsh?"
"Maybe I'm afraid of being different, I
guess."
"I am sure that if you really look you will
find all sorts of motivations that keep you from
taking this route. You will think your reputation
will suffer. You will think your income will
suffer. You will think those nearest and dearest
to you will not support you because they will
think you foolish. You will come up with a hundred
reasons not to do this, Bill."
"What do I have to do?"
"First, think on the things we said here this
day. Your success on this path will depend
entirely upon your commitment. Then from time to
time pick up your bible and read, then re-read
Matthew 21: verses 21 & 22. If you need someone to
talk to you are free to see me anytime you wish.
How's that?"
Bill accepted that, rose, said his good byes
and began walking down to the pier.
Sam went with him. "Thanks for the visit and
thank you for your concern for the welfare of
those kids. They will be fine."
"Thank you, Sam. We will talk more."
Bill got into his boat and was off.
