What famous American statesman invented the

What famous scientist struggled his whole life to fight

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Why can't you catch a cold at the North Pole?

You can't catch a cold or the flu while outdoors at the
North Pole in winter. That's because winter temperatures
are so low there that no known disease-causing
microorganism can survive in the frigid weather!

What scientist predicted the discovery of an insect he
had never actually seen?

Charles Darwin predicted the discovery of an insect with
a 12" long proboscis on the basis of studying an orchid so
big that he theorized the flower could only be pollinated by
such a bug. Others made fun of him for his ridiculous theory
until two decades later, when a nocturnal moth with a
five-and-a-half inch wingspan and 12" proboscis was
discovered on Madagascar. The insect was named
Xanthropan morganii praedicta in honor of Darwin's
accurate prediction.

The Hawk and the Mouse -
Saving For Retirement
by Kemberly Wardlaw

There once was a hawk, ferocious and swift. He was
young and agile with many years of life to hunt the
open ranch lands. In a nearby field, a mouse scurried
about the ground. The hawk saw the hurried motion and
swept speedily toward the rodent.

Just as the hawk's shadow engulfed the smaller rodent,
the mouse fell to its back and begged, "Please, Mr.
Hawk, spare me my life!" This surprised the hunter and
he landed beside the mouse.

"Why should I spare your life? I am hungry today."

"It's always about today, isn't it?" answered the
mouse. "Do you ever think about tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow? Well, that's just another day to flap my
wings. I will eat then, too."

The mouse scratched his chin and replied, "But one day
you will be old and gray. You will have chiseled
claws. You should prepare for the future now or starve
later."

"I do, I do. I am building a grand nest as we speak.
You see, I fly low to the highway's hot pavement in
search of lost dollar bills everyday. I find a dollar
a day and add it to my nest. I am constantly
constructing my nest egg."

The proud hawk looked toward the mouse for a reply.
The mouse shook his head and stated, "I will make a
deal with you, hawk. If after fifty years, you have
saved more money than me, not only will I give myself
up for your feast, I will lead every mouse in this
field to your nest."

The hawk did not take long to consider the proposition.
He knew he could cover more ground flying than the
mouse could crawling. He would be able to locate twice
as many lost dollar bills and thus build a much larger
nest. The hunter concluded that in fifty years, he
would have a great feast.

Years ticked by and every day the hawk collected two
dollars. On each given day, the mouse found one dollar
and invested it wisely. Fifty years later, the bird of
prey lived in a large nest made of twigs, mud, and
dollar bills. He was feeble and sickly. And although
his nest equaled that of $36,500.00(1) , along with a
few very nice tree limbs, he knew the mouse would have
less. He no longer invaded the far stretching fields,
but took comfort in knowing he would soon have his
great feast. As the hawk glared down from his perch,
he saw the mouse. The mouse was alone.

"So, hawk, how much money do you have?"

"Just under $37,000(1) . And you?"

"I have $508,462(2), you fool. You see, I invested my
$365 wisely every year. I dollar cost averaged into
the market and utilized well-diversified mutual funds
over the course of all these years. I am the victor
and you have no feast."

The hawk collapsed into his nest and was never seen
again. The mouse lived a happy life and provided
handsomely for his family. He passed along a bit of
advice to those who asked about saving: "The individual
most accountable for your future financial welfare, is
the one you see in the mirror today."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 10 of 11

At home you may have other things to deal with in
relation to infections. Many times water-borne microbes
can come into your drinking water and you can’t see
them or smell them. It is only after you have come down
with some sort of gastro-intestinal problem do you
suspect a problem.  But now you are faced with nausea,
vomiting and probably diarrhea. All of these have huge,
invisible bioburden.  It has been shown that even one
small amount of “vomitus” contains large amounts of
micro-organisms that are all harmful.

Treatment rests with symptoms and often antibiotics
(meaning: to “go against” life) are used.  Hopefully
these will kill this organism but because of its strong
desire to live, it could take days. So if you have to
take an antibiotic, make sure you always take the
entire prescription. Otherwise the organism could find
a way to change its behaviour and live. An antiseptic
is a chemical agent that is meant to overcome the
disease-causing part of the organism. It is meant more
as a way to prevent a possible infection. It is often
used on the source such a table or instrument instead
of the person. Washing your skin off with alcohol is a
good example. But because your skin is so absorbent,
care is taken not to apply too much solution.

Let’s look at prevention and protection…they go hand in
hand. There are some fairly simple and easy ways to
stay healthy right now.
Wash your hands frequently. Wash whenever you have
touched something that may have been in contact with an
undesirable or unclean object. If you recall the cycle
of infection, this would be putting pathogens onto an
object, having someone handle the object and they as
being susceptible, now get the infection, always
assuming that the bioburden is high enough and the
host’s resistance is low enough. Wash your hands -- 20
seconds with warm, soapy water. Do this as often as
possible, especially after touching publicly used
handrails, washroom door handles, and other such
objects. Stay away from people who have infections such
as flu symptoms. As you now know, the microbes travel
in many different ways. If you can’t avoid the
situation, turn your head and make sure you don’t
inhale the droplets…wash your hands…teach your children
how to protect themselves and others.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

The words took Eloise back many years to when
she had said and done the same thing to her
Mother. The kids had come across the garter snake
nest that has been in the bush, under a fallen
log, for years.

"Oh, yeah! Neat. Let me see!" Eloise held out
her hand to take the snake from the kids. "When I
was a kid there used to be lots of them under that
tree. Is the nest still there?"

"Yeah, Mom! Come see. There's hundreds."

Eloise knew there weren't that many but if you
have ever seen a garter snake nest you would
certainly think there were hundreds. She went with
the kids. There, in the same place she knew about,
was the nest of snakes. It was a relatively small
pocket, maybe 14 inches across, but it was a
continually moving mass of snakes. It really did
look like there were hundreds.

"I found this nest when I was your age. I took
a snake to my Mom. She was scared. She told me to
take it back. I wonder if Grandma still thinks
that way? Shall we go see?"

The kids thought they were part of a
conspiracy to scare Grandma. Their eyes lit up
like lights and they were immediately part of the
plan.

"I'll go first so my body will hide what you
have in your hands. Don't jump at Grandma or don't
throw it at her. Just show her like you did me and
we'll see what she does."

The kids were into the trick,
enthusiastically. Maz kept the snake as bundled
up as he could. The snake kept trying to get away
but Maz did a pretty good job.

Casually the three of them walked up the
walkway, up the steps and over to see Grandma. She
knew something was up just by the way the
grandchildren were walking, trying to hold
something and snickering. As they arrived Eloise
winked at her Mother.

"Grandma, look!" Maz held out his hands in
which the snake was making one more attempt to get
away. It fell to the deck.

"Oh! Get that thing out of here!" Alewka
jumped up onto her chair in mock fright and
started screaming.

The kids laughed and laughed. They thought
they got Grandma good.

Alewka continued to put on a show until the
kids gathered up the snake and were on their way
to taking it back. After the kids had left she got
off the chair, laughing. She knew it thrilled the
kids to have scared Grandma.

Eloise hollered to them. "Put the snake back
and come straight back for some lunch."

"Okay, Mom."

The kids were walking, half running, as kids
do. They never seem to walk slowly or purposely.
They were always on the run.

Soon they were back and Grandma served lunch.
"I shouldn't give you two any lunch. You gave
Grandma a fright what with that snake. You two are
terrible doing that to your poor old Grandma."

The youngsters laughed. "Don't you like snakes
Grandma. They're neat. We can't do that with
snakes back home. They are all dangerous."

"So why did you pick up these snakes?"

"Cause they all looked like babies. They are
so small. They can't hurt you Grandma. Mom says
they are harmless, that its okay to pick them up.
Did we really scare you Grandma?"

"I guess you did. You must have taken ten
years off my life. You and your Mother. She did
that to me when she was a little girl."

There was laughter all around. They all
appreciated the scene.

Lunch didn't take too long, then Tim and
Sharon wanted to go for a walk. The main roads out
to the lake from Pinehill were well paved and
gravelled, but the lane that led to the cabin was
a dirt and sand road that ran all along the back
of many, many cabins. There was not much traffic
on it and with trees towering up on each side the
lane was always cool, even romantic. This is where
folks often walked just for a peaceful time. Even
kids who walked along this road never seemed to
run. The ambiance inspired stillness, peace,
togetherness.

As a kid Tim could remember many times using
this road. He would walk with his brother and
sister. Sometimes his Mother would send him on a
chore to go see a neighbor. He could do that by
walking on an "inner trail" that went between
cabins, but often he would come out to this road
and take his time. There was something magical
about this lane.
