What is forensic entomology?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What famous American statesman invented the
rocking chair?

Benjamin Franklin, known for his many contributions
in the fields of science, literature, and politics, invented
the rocking chair.

What famous scientist struggled his whole life to fight
a reputation as a "mad scientist"?

Alfred Nobel, the scientist who established the Nobel Prizes
in his will, was looked upon as a destructive "mad scientist"
in his day after his nitroglycerine factory blew up in 1864, killing
his brother. The Swedish government refused to let his factory
reopen after the incident, and Nobel, who had invented
dynamite, had to fight his "destructive" reputation until he
died. His Nobel Prizes have gone a long way to
redeeming him!

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™

---------------------

Do You Remember How To Play?

Do you still 'go out to play'? Do your friends still
knock on your door and invite you out to play? I hope
so, and, I hope you go.

This world seems to send a strong message that play is
frivolous, time-wasting and useful only to
procrastinators and slackers. Unless, of course, you
can find a suitable way to include it in your business
life, like golfing. Now, I'm not talking about
exercise as play although I hope you do find some
redeeming features in exercising. I'm talking about
doing things strictly for the joy of it, the fun in it.

When is the last time you laid out on the grass on a
summer evening and looked at the stars? When did you
last watch clouds and look for pictures? When did you
last have a wonderful, tear-producing belly laugh?
When did you last make music or dance? When did you
last build a sandcastle? When did you last play hooky
from life?

Adults NEED to play. If we don't, we can lose our
perspective. We think everything that we are doing is
important, necessary and critical to financial success.
Surely some things are. Some folks even think they are
indispensable. Do you? If your answer is 'Yes', then I
suggest you try this. Put your finger into a glass of
water. Take it out. Observe the hole your finger left.
You get the picture.

There are other kinds of success beyond those that
society measures in dollars, homes and positions. Which
ones do you want to achieve?

Some folks pay lip-service to the need for balance in
their lives. It makes a good story. It makes others
think that they actually have it. Isn't that true? Most
of us can speak with eloquence and authority on what we
need to do in order to be truly healthy. There is no
shortage of information, simply a shortage of action.

I was giving an Optimal Living seminar once on
Vancouver Island in Canada. As I was introduced I came
up the aisle from the back of the room asking
folks "'Who wants to be healthy?" Most hands shot up.
Next question: "Who knows what it takes to be healthy?"
Most hands shot up. "Tell me what it takes." I wrote
their shouted-out list on the flip chart:

Enough sleep.
Eat nutritiously.
Give up junk food.
Relax.
Have goals.
Drink lots of water.
Have good relationships.
Spend time alone.
Reduce stress.
Have regular medical check-ups.
Exercise.
Love someone and be loved.
Laugh.
Play.

A bright crowd. They had the main bases covered. My
next question: "So, why are you here if you know all
this?" Silence. Then, the million-dollar question: "So,
how many of you are doing this?" Very few hands.

Isn't it true? You know what to do. You could give your
best friend excellent suggestions, couldn't you? So, do
you take your own advice?

My greatest challenge is exercise. I'll do almost
anything to avoid it. I have to trick myself into it
some days. Here's one of my tricks: I can watch
one of my favorite day-time TV shows as long as I am
exercising through it. OK, OK. You're right. It's
simpler to give up watching the show than it is
to exercise. I know that. But, most days I do at least
get more exercise than I would if I didn't make that
deal with myself. I've made it into a game with
benefits.

Recently, my husband and I took our fold-up chairs out
to the darkest, highest spot we could find far away
from city lights. We laid back and scouted the skies
for meteor showers. Each time a shooting star made its
way unexpectedly across the sky, we were delighted just
as we had been as children. It was play.

How are you playing? Who are your playmates? What
time do you set aside just for restorative play?
Explore this idea: By any chance, do you and
your mates have an unwritten contract to avoid playing?
Have you convinced yourselves that you are only 'doing
the right thing' when you are seriously exhausted and
morbidly over-worked? Do you only laugh when you've
had a drink or two with colleagues while discussing
business after a tough day at work?

If you have children, they need you to play with them
as much as you need to play. You are teaching them to
live a balanced life while showing them that
you care about them. You all benefit.

Some folks simply exchange one form of competition for
another and think they are playing. I knew a man who
was highly competitive at work and his supposed
relaxation was playing competitive tennis. Oh, really?
This may get his body moving and his heart beating, but
is it play? At the end of the game, when he has lost,
he is not a happy man. This is not play. It is
an exchange of venues for his competitive spirit
masquerading as play.

Be good to yourself. Take care of yourself. There is
a part of you that remembers the joy of skipping stones
across the water and singing songs around a campfire
just because it felt so good. Go do it again.

Get out there. Play. Have fun. Laugh. Skip. Go to the
zoo. Rent funny old movies. Be silly. It's good for
you. Enjoy!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 11 of 11

Keep healthy. It’s your absolute best defense...if you
need to supplement your foods with vitamins and
minerals, choose the correct products. Drink lots of
fluids, especially fruit juices. Get regular
exercises…but take it easy. Prolonged exercise can
actually lower your resistance (oxidative stress). Keep
your immune system in top condition by eating wholesome
meals that contain lots of fresh vegetables and fruits.

It’s all about measurements…a little may not be a
problem, but a higher bioburden may well contribute to
long standing health issues. I wanted to share one last
example: one micro-organism, a fungus, to your
attention. I will be writing an article on it
specifically, but it is one few of us hear about. I
feel it might have a lot of importance for many people.
The fungus has the name of “Aspergillus Fumigatus“.
Here is one link to investigate. If you really think it
through, and see the ways it comes into your house and
your life, it may help you find some answers to
respiratory problems or suspected allergies.

At the end of the article, are some links and
suggestions if you would like to learn more. This isn’t
a subject everyone wants to study intensely, but just
having some understanding will help you to think a
little differently. It will help you look for answers
instead of resigning yourself to hopeless advice or
recommendations. It will also help you live your life
with more determination. Just knowing about places that
are relatively safe or ones to avoid offers you a sense
of being back in control. It gives you the freedom of
choice. If this information has been interesting and
you would like to learn more, please do some more
research. This subject can get very involved, but it
worth checking out, especially if you are on any kind
of medications. These might interact or reduce their
effectiveness.  This is an area for you and your doctor
or pharmacist to create a healthy partnership.

I hope that you now have some insight into the amounts
or bioburden of pathogens or other micro-organisms that
will surely come into your environment. You now have
some ideas as to how to protect yourself and others.

If you would like to learn more about this subject,
there are some other topics to research: nosocomial
infections, hospital air bioburden, Staphylococcus
Aureus And MRSA, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa,
Coagulase-negative Staphylococci, and Aspergillus
Fumigatus.

NosocomialInfection%20Part%207.htm,

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Viral Infections, plus many
more. These links will start your search and lead you

I would like to end with a word of caution. It is fine
to cruise all over the Internet, but please have some
protective measures for your computer installed. Many
sites will “know” you are checking them out, and will
note your identification. You could well be flooded
with all sorts of unwanted and undesirable information
and suggestions.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

Tim and Sharon made their way slowly along.
Soon they were joined by Eloise, Mazunta and the
kids. This was a rich time for all of them. They
sauntered along, inspecting the leaves, the
grasses, any sign of animal. Here and there they
would see pockets of low lying water with the
associated dogwood and willow trees. Once in a
while they would scare up a bird.

The kids found willow tree with funny looking
marks on the outside of it. Tim called it a
"Diamond Willow".

"Later, after we get back to the cabin we can
get the saw and come back here and cut a long
branch. Then we can bring it home and peel the
bark off it. It makes a beautiful staff for
walking. It'll be fun."

The walk continued. Maz and Eloise followed
Tim and Sharon's lead and held hands, like lovers.
It was strange. Even though one was with others in
this place one could be alone, or with a mate.
There was no need for words or talking. That would
upset the tranquility felt by all. The kids were
uncustomarily quiet here.

As Maz walked along he had visions of Eloise
playing here as a child. It was part of the puzzle
that was his wife and he appreciated the
opportunity to share some of her private places
like this wonderful, peaceful lane. They didn't
speak but each knew the other's mind.

The same was true of Tim and Sharon. She had
not before had the opportunity to be here along
this lane. It had the same affect on her it did on
all who walked here. Somehow it made her conscious
of her love for Tim. It made it palatable, almost
a "thing" of it's own. It was almost material.

To the practiced eye one could see the
blending of souls as they looked at Tim and
Sharon. This walk would happen often.

So, too, with Maz and Eloise. "Bueno" he
whispered so as not to disturb the silence. "we
must come here every day we are here. This is a
magical place."

She squeezed his hand.

As with all things, the walk came to an end.
They came back onto the deck and there, as
expected were Sam and Alewka, sipping coffee. The
pair of them weren't speaking. It looked like they
were mesmerized, melancholy, entranced by the joy
and happiness of their family. They were each
pondering such when the kids returned.

"Hi guys! Like a cup of coffee now?"

"Sure Mom" Tim was first up the steps and
responded for all.

The rest of the day was uneventful. They had
supper and around eight o'clock, started the
evening fire.

"Funny Maz, how an evening fire seems to be a
part of a lot of people's lives, all over the
world. Everywhere in earth people like to sit
around a fire at night. City folks don't get much
opportunity, unless they go camping or have a
cabin like this one but there are a lot of people
who do like to get around a fire at night and
enjoy the ever changing moods it presents."

"We find our fires at night help bond the
community together, Sam. I imagine in one way or
another that might be what happens when folks sit
around a fire."

The family joined them and they all sat
around, chatting, sipping on coffee or hot
chocolate. "I think we're going to get a storm
tonight. Those clouds over there will be on us in
about an hour or two and then the wind will come
up and the rain start."

Sam's prediction was right. It took two hours
but just as Sam had said the wind came up as the
front went through and then the rains fell. These
were not like the rains in South America. These
were too cool to stay in.

With everybody grabbing something they soon
scurried to get chairs, tables, drinks and
anything else up on the deck out of the way of the
rain.

Before long it was raining so hard they
couldn't even see the lake from where they were.
They could see it was lighter than the surrounding
trees but they couldn't see the water. C-R-A-S-H!
The thunder roared. Lightning was flashing almost
continually. Thunder was soon to follow each flash
of light.

The rain on the roof sounded like the beat of
a thousand drums and occasionally when a gust of
wind came up they would get sprayed with the blown
rain. This was almost the perfect ending to a
wonderful day. One could feel the earth saying
"Thank you." for the life giving water. They had
had a spell of ten days or more without rain and
this night quenched the thirsting soil.

HA! HA! HA!

An astronomer is on an expedition to Darkest Africa to
observe a total eclipse of the sun, which will only be
observable there, when he's captured by cannibals.
The eclipse is due the next day around noon. To gain
his freedom he plans to pose as a god and threaten to
extinguish the sun if he's not released, but the timing
has to be just right. So, in the few words of the cannibals'
primitive tongue that he knows, he asks his guard what
time they plan to kill him.

The guard's answer is, "Tradition has it that captives
are to be killed when the sun reaches the highest point
in the sky on the day after their capture so that they may
be cooked and ready to be served for the evening meal."

"Great," the astronomer replies.

The guard continues, though, "But because everyone's
so excited about it, in your case we're going to wait until
after the eclipse."
