STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
The name "cranberry" comes from German and Dutch settlers.
The berry was initially called "crane berry." The reason it
was called this was because when the flowers bloom, the
petals of the flowers twist backwards and look very much like
the head of a crane. Eventually the name was shortened down
to be "cranberry."

Around The Net
(This is a direct excerpt from eMarketer Daily)
What's New in Net News
Recent findings released by the Pew Internet & American
Life project demonstrate the different reasons US
adults went online to news and information about the
past US election.
For the third survey in a row, Pew found that
convenience was the top reason US adults got their news
online, with almost 60% of respondents citing it as a
reason, compared to 33% who search for news on the Net
because that they didn't get all the news they needed
from traditional news sources. This percentage had
declined from 2002, when it was 43%, which is
surprising since there is currently a heated debate on
the Internet and in the news media about whether the
"mainstream media" is has become fossilized, lazy,
unreliable or irrelevant, while online news, often in
the form of blogs or other Web sites, has become more
investigative, imaginative and relevant. The debate
rages on, but for what it is worth, the survey
indicates that many people do not feel that they have
to go online to get all the news.
A survey focusing on the search engine habits of US
Internet users by Harris Interactive and MSN, conducted
in 2004, found that many online readers use the Web to
find breaking news. In fact, this "topic" was by far
the most popular search, with war, terrorism, the 2004
Presidential election, economic news and celebrity
news/scandals significantly behind.
Three-fourths of both men and women used the Internet
for breaking news, but usage varied greatly for other
types of news. Men were more likely to search for
topics like war, terrorism, election and economic news,
while women were more apt to search for news about
celebrities and high profile trials.
A report by Nielsen/NetRatings from October 2004 showed
that CNN, MSNBC and Yahoo! News all ranked as top
Internet news destinations, with AOL News & Weather
gaining popularity. Newspaper-based Web sites tended to
rank lower, even ones with non-regional affiliations,
such as USA Today. FoxNews ranked lower than the other
network-tied sites, even though it has been a
top-ranking TV news station for quite some time. Google
News, which aggregates news links from thousands of
news sites, outpolled some news sites.
Clearly, sites like CNN and MSNBC benefit from Internet
users thirst for breaking news, unlike newspaper-based
sites, which do update their pages as breaking news
occurs, but are more focused on longer reports and
analysis of events, rather than up to the minute news
like the TV-based news.
As the recent election cycle demonstrated, news stories
now emerge from the Internet and move into newspapers
and TV (indeed, this has been the case since the late
1990s), and some Internet users feel they should go
straight to the source. Despite the variety of news
available online, however, the main appeal of Internet
news is its ability to quickly update the latest
stories.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Why Do We Have To Be Healthy?
PART 2 of 5
Being a nurse and an OR nurse at that, I never gave
this question any thought. I dealt with people who had
problems all day long. I saw them before the surgery
with their families and afterwards to check on them. In
between we worked to correct their problem. My world
was made up of sick people. My environment was isolated
and controlled. I thought I did a really good job. I
was certainly very busy, but we all get a wake up call.
Mine happened when my management position was
eliminated and I found myself on the outside of this
very isolated and controlled environment
and had some
difficulty adjusting to the changes that presented
themselves. Now I faced healthy people, but with a
mindset that still needed to talk about illnesses and
how to deal with them. I taught about heart health
or
unhealth as it would be. I taught about cholesterol
management. I taught people how to look for diabetic
symptoms and what might keep them at bay. I measured
everything I could: blood pressures, glucose (blood
sugar), and cholesterol. I taught about cancer and
womens health...I taught about mens health, although
these clinics were so sparsely attended I felt I really
shouldnt be paid! I taught a lot of things, but I
dont think I realty taught about health.
I took health for granted, never sparing a thought for
its presence or absence. I took it for granted in
myself and for others. As I grew older and hopefully
wiser, I still paid little attention to it. I merely
thought it was inevitable that my family and I would
eventually come down with any one of the major illness
groups and spend our last days in discomfort. I didnt
realise I had a choice. My colleagues and I all spoke
the same language. I wonder if any of them knew more
and didnt share this information

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The neighbor knew what had happened. It did
not cure him of alcoholism, though he did lower
his head. Sam knew it was not so much in shame as
it was embarrassment. The man still did not really
think he had done anything wrong. After all
everybody gets drunk once in a while, right?
The man's stupidity became more evident as he
tried to explain what had happened. Still having
liquor on his breath plus the ridiculous attitude
and story, soon had the neighbors turning their
backs on him and going home. The were sick of this
man's antics and his excuses made them the sicker.
The man tried to explain but only to backs
walking away. Finally he became arrogant and began
to use profanities and insults on his neighbors.
Only Sam and his family stayed.
Sam knew they could have rebuilt the building
but he decided not to. This man had much to go
through to learn humility and dealing with banks
and insurance companies would help drive the
lesson home.
"You can stay at our place tonight. Call your
wife in the morning and have her come get you."
A grumbled thank you was the response.
They went back to Sam's cabin. The women folk
and the kids were on the deck watching. They knew
that all was now well, but they were wide awake,
long past being able to sleep. Even the kids would
not have settled down again so no one even tried
to put them to bed.
Alewka poured coffee and they all sat outside
in the cool air talking about what had happened.
The neighbor was treated as if he were not a
drunk. He was treated normally even though he
smelled of whiskey. He must have spilled some on
himself during the day.
Discussions revolved around what's next. The
man knew he would have to tell his wife, his
banker and his insurance company. He had no idea
how they would react. As he looked over to his own
place he could hardly believe what had happened.
The mess was much more than he had ever seen
before. Being dark there was nothing he could do
now, though he would not have long to wait.
As one might expect the lake was full of
boats, many converging on Sam's pier. Tim walked
down to the pier to explain to those who stopped.
Sharon was about to ask how they put the fire
out, when the answer became clear in her mind. She
had not thought of that as a fitting response to
fire.
More neighbors were now coming. They were the
ones who had driven over, having heard the
explosion. Then there were those who had walked
from further away. No one around the lake was
sleeping now.
Bill, the doctor was back, this time with his
wife and kids.
Alewka and the ladies were serving coffee to
all and before long it was a regular party. By
this time there were signs of first light. It was
five and it would not be an hour before full light
would show what the results were. Even now folks
were beginning to walk around the ruins.
Sharon walked down to the pier to be with Tim.
She put her arms around him and hugged him. "I am
sure glad you aren't a drinker."
"I know. It does awful things to people and
they don't even know it. I would not touch the
stuff. I can't afford it getting between me and my
Maker. My life is far more important to me than to
waste it with liquor."
"I know," she said, "I feel the same way. I
have seen too much of what it can do. Life is so
much easier without it."
"You got that right. Want to go back up to the
house?"
"Sure. Let's go."
The pair of them walked up to the house. The
crowd was so big there was hardly standing room on
the deck. At times like this most folks wanted to
be around this family. Each member was
broadcasting love to help settle down the still
racing hearts.
As full light brightened up the morning the
sight next door was amazing. The force that blew
apart that building must have been huge. There
were parts of the building strewn all over the
place. Sam looked up on his own roof and there
were pieces of cupboards up there. There was a
toilet in his driveway and a steel bed frame
member leaning up against the cabin.
He surveyed his own place and found little or
nothing in the way of damage from flying pieces.
It appears the broken windows were the worst of
it.
There was nothing left, nothing retrievable
from the building that exploded. Everything had
been thrown into the air to a destination
different than where it started. What was not cast
aside with the explosion was somewhat burnt,
although the men had the fire out so soon that not
much had burned. Still there was nothing left to
recover. It was total destruction.

HA! HA! HA!
It was Palm Sunday, and the mother's 3 year old son had
to stay home from church because of strep throat.
When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm
branches, the little boy asked what they were for.
His mother explained, "People held them over Jesus' head
as he walked by."
"Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed. "The one Sunday I
don't go, and Jesus shows up".
