Waiting For the Official Job Offer
by Linda Matias

At the end of the third job interview, Helene was told by
the hiring manager, "Congratulations, I am going to
recommend you for the position. Expect a call from HR."
Helene breathed a sigh of relief because her job search of
six months was finally over.

Helene went straight home and waited by the phone all day.
The phone never rang.

As the week drew to a close, Helene began to get nervous.
She hadn't heard from HR. She wondered what had happened.
She convinced herself that everything was fine, that the HR
department must have been swamped. She wasn't exactly sure
what would be more important than calling and welcoming her
onboard, but she knew the HR department had a good reason.
After all, Helene was the most qualified candidate; the
hiring manager told her so.

Days went by and still Helene heard nothing. Confused by the
situation, she anxiously glanced through the Sunday morning
classifieds wondering what had gone wrong.

Unfortunately, this happens to many jobseekers. They are
offered the position by the interviewer and they never hear
from HR or it takes months before a firm offer is made.

But there are steps that you can take as a jobseeker to
minimize your risk of being strung along by an employer.

An easy and often neglected step is to find out what comes
next after each interview. Establishing the next step gives
you some control over the hiring process, and helps avoid
the guessing game. Make it a point to leave each interview
with a clear understanding of what you are supposed to do
and what the hiring manager is supposed to do.

E-mail, fax, or snail mail a follow-up letter thanking the
interviewer for the job offer and that you are looking
forward to hearing from the HR department. Sending a note
stresses to the interviewer what you heard and if there was
any confusion on your part, compels the interviewer to
contact you and address the misunderstanding.

If you haven't heard from the employer in a timely fashion,
call to reiterate your interest in the position. Here's an
example of an effective follow-up call: "Thank you for your
time and for a very informative interview last week. Based
on our last discussion, you are seeking an Executive
Assistant who can effectively serve as a corporate liaison,
manage administrative affairs, and support organizational
goals. After a series of interviews, you were
enthusiastically going to recommend me for the position but
I have yet to hear from the Human Resources department. The
Widget Corporation is my #1 choice and I am very interested
in joining your team. Unfortunately, I will be forced to
consider other options if I don't receive an offer in
writing by Friday at noon."

By providing a timeline you create a sense of urgency and
put the employer on notice that you are in demand. This may
encourage them to move the process along. But only use this
tactic if you really do have other options because setting a
deadline that an employer is unable to meet could get you
dropped from consideration.

Although I recommend that you follow-up with a phone call,
don't become a nuisance and call everyday. If you reach out
to an employer several times without receiving a courtesy
response, stop calling and move on.

As frustrating as it may be, you must always remain
professional. Keep in mind that, until you are officially
hired, every conversation you have with the employer is part
of the interview process.

In conclusion, realize that a definite maybe does not
qualify as a firm job offer. Therefore continue job
searching until you receive an official offer. If an
employer is interested in you, they will respect your time,
return your phone calls, and make a concerted effort to keep
you updated.

Don't waste your time waiting by the phone. You deserve more
than that.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

OSTEOPOROSIS: THE SILENT INTRUDER
OF HEALTH AND STABILITY.

This is a condition that gradually weakens the bones,
so they become more fragile and likely to break.

Picture a mountain, which is filled (undermined) with
caves. Eventually the superstructure doesn't have
enough support and "caves in". The problem is that
this porous mass isn't strong enough to hold up the
body's frame and tissue. So even normal daily activities
can cause a break.

This brittleness leads to pain, height loss, difficulty in
moving, deformed humps on the back, and can
eventually lead to permanent dependence. The bones
most frequently affected are the spine, wrists, and hips.
It is a normal side effect of aging, and will speed up
as the person gets older. Osteoporosis is labeled the
silent" disease, meaning that it can progress
"in the background" without symptoms, until it's too
late to prevent permanent damage.

At this stage, prevention is the best treatment. A
combination of both calcium supplementation and
healthy eating will ensure the adequate amount of
calcium. For supplementation, check for "elemental"
calcium. Don't be mislead by the total amount listed
on the bottle. 1500 mgs. is needed daily.

So the question is "should I take extra calcium"? With
what we know right now, the answer should be yes".
There are lots of discussions about new drug therapies
and hormone replacement. For those of us who prefer
the simple, natural way to maintain our health, calcium
supplementation is adequate. Just make sure you
include vitamin D. Both are needed for strong bone
growth. And don't forget the weight-bearing exercises.
Men are five times less likely to get Osteoporosis, but
after the age of 52, it advisable that they, too, start
calcium supplementation.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Exotic is a term that those who come to
visit say. We live there so we are used to it.
But, coming from a snowy country I can see where
you might think we live in an exotic place. When
Bueno came back for a visit I had already been
working with our mutual friend Boolanga. I wanted
to marry Eloise, but I felt I had to be equal with
her in her training and knowledge so I wanted to
learn higher law. Boolanga taught me. When Eloise
came back for a visit she brought her parents. I
took that time to ask for their daughter's hand.
They said yes. So Bueno and I married according to
the custom of our village."

"Where is your village?"

"It's on the Amazon river about 2500 miles
west of where it flows into the Atlantic. Our time
zone is two hours later than here. It's nine in
the evening here now. That means it is seven back
home. On a clear day we can just see the tops of
the Andes from where we are."

"My! Eloise, that's a big change for a girl
raised in Pinehill."

"You bet. But when you learn higher law the
whole earth becomes your home. Mazunta and I
married and then we had two children. They're
staying with Mom and Dad out at the lake cabin.
They are a girl, AliAnne, now six and a boy
Samual, we call him little Maz. He's five."

"Where do they go to school?"

"There is no school there, Mary. We teach them
what they have to know to survive and live in the
village. Moreover we are teaching them higher law,
which will equip them to live anywhere in the
world they wish."

"You keep talking about this higher law. What
do you mean?"

"Brock, Mary, we didn't come here to talk
about higher law or to convert you to it. We came
to visit. However, I will give you a quick
explanation. Man well knows there are physical
laws and mental laws. He has long ago learned
these laws and lives according to what he has
found. So most people living in this earth gather
together material goods and in so doing believe
they are living as they should. Man has not yet
learned, in the universal sense, that there are
also spiritual laws that reign over all others.
Those spiritual laws, once learned and practiced
mean one is living by higher law. While I was away
in the jungle I learned those laws. That is the
only way I was able to survive. Upon my return I
was able to show my family. Since then they have
shown others. In using spiritual laws to govern
our lives we must live close to our Maker. There
can be nothing that comes between us and our
Maker, not even our loved ones. When we hold true
to that then we are said to be living by higher
law, for we can do anything our Maker can do."

"Eloise, that sounds blasphemous."

"Sure it does, Mary, to those who are solidly
churched and don't want to look past what the
church says. We run into that all the time. But
look at it this way. We do no more and no less
than what Jesus said for us to do. If you pick up
a King James Version of the Bible, a red letter
edition, and read only what Jesus said, and follow
those instructions, then you will live by higher
law."

"I never thought about it that way. The church
doesn't teach that."

"No, and they won't. If you do what Jesus said
then you will no longer have need to go to church.
Those who run the church know that. They will not
teach that."

"Eloise, that's pretty awful. That's a real
slam against the church. Are you sure you mean
it?"

"Mary, I hold no animosity against the church
or any person. Each is on the path they choose.
All I am saying is the church will not give you
teaching that will ultimately take you away from
them. They require your support to survive and
they therefor continue to say they are the right
teachers and the only teachers. They will tell you
all about Jesus, but they will not tell you to go
and do what Jesus said to do. Instead, what they
will tell you is that Jesus was speaking to only a
very select group of "special" people. He was not
speaking to the common man. And he further taught
those men things that were not for the common man.
They encourage you not to try, for it is only
folly and you will not succeed. In teaching that
they keep you in the fold, but prevent you from
progressing further on your journey. It is for
each person to make the choice, Mary. You can
follow the church or you can follow Jesus."

"I'll have to think about that, Eloise. You
are making quite an accusation there."

"As I said, Mary. I did not come over here to
talk about that. I just wanted to have a visit
with some old friends. If you want to talk further
on higher law then we can talk about it at some
later time. There is one thing I would ask of you.
I want you to make a decision in your own heart,
soul and mind about Jesus. You must make the
decision between the idea that Jesus was a man who
was true in what he taught, or you believe him to
be the biggest liar to ever be imposed on mankind.
You must decide which one of those Jesus is. Once
you make that decision then you must follow what
you are told from the inside. You must listen to that
voice that comes from within you."

HA! HA! HA!

General McKenzie was in charge of the Navy, and he was
visiting his colleague General Marshall, who was in
charge of the Army. McKenzie arrives at the military
camp and is greeted by Marshall. They both walk around
the place, and McKensie asks: "So how are your men?"

"Very well trained, Gnl. McKenzie."

"I hope so. You see, my men over at the Navy are so
well trained, you could see they're the bravest men all
over the country."

"Well, my men are very brave, too."

"I'd like to see that."

So Marshall calls private Cooper and says: "Private
Johnson! I want you to stop that tank coming here with
your body!"

"Are you crazy? It'd kill me, you idiot! I'm out of
here!"

As private Johnson ran away, Marshall turned to a
bewildered McKenzie and said: "You see? You have to be
pretty brave to talk like that to a general."
