Who developed khaki?
Lt. Harry Burnett of the Queen's Own Corp of Guides
developed the cloth in 1846. The goal was to produce a
mud-colored uniform that would camouflage English soldiers
attempting to hide in dusty areas.
When did camouflage become standard military practice?
The military practice of camouflage became standard practice
in World War I, when uniforms, helmets, and equipment were
covered in the colors of leaves and brush to hide them from
airplanes.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
---------------------
Be Bold!
I like what Billie Jean King, the feminist tennis
professional, had to say: "Be bold. If you're going to
make an error, make a doozey, and don't be afraid to hit the
ball." Does the fear of making an error keep you from doing
things you say are important to you?
Some folks can be almost paralyzed by their unwillingness to
make a mistake. Most people might still be crawling on all
fours if they had given up after the first attempt at
standing! Instead we encourage babies to get up, and get up,
and keeping getting up, until they master standing. Then we
immediately begin encouraging walking. No one considers the
falling down part of this experience a mistake...only part
of the learning process.
In this society, many are raised to seek out the approval of
others as the barometer of success. Certainly childhood is a
time when this can be appropriate, however, simultaneously,
it is important to teach children to approve of themselves.
For adults, learning to approve of themselves is a necessity
for growth AND for contentment, satisfaction and peace of
mind. When you live by your most deeply held values, you
increase your authenticity. This leads to greater
self-esteem... and greater willingness to risk learning
through making mistakes. You can afford it then because you
have your own approval.
If you refrain from "hitting the ball" in life, you may miss
some of life's most rewarding experiences. If you are
concerned more with how you will look to others, than how
you feel about yourself, you may be frozen in inactivity.
Why not step up to the plate, keep your eye on the ball and
swing? That's the only way you can possibly hit a home run!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 14 of 31
Low Pre-term Birth Weight The health and financial
problems associated with low pre-term birth weight
babies (weighing less than 2,500g at birth) are
significant. One study illustrated that these infants
are 40 times more likely to die in the neonatal period
than normal birth weight infants. At birth,
approximately 7% of all babies are in the low birth
weight category, yet these babies account for
two-thirds of all neonatal deaths.
In another significant study by Offenbacher, et al,
researchers found that low birth weight is still the
number one cause of infant mortality. It also causes
many long-term health problems, including an increased
risk of cerebral palsy, epilepsy, chronic lung disease,
learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder.
The cost, both financially and emotionally, of low
preterm birth weight babies is tremendous. In the
United States, 1 in 10 births are low birth weight
babies. They account for 5 million neonatal intensive
care unit hospital days per year at an annual cost of
more than $5 billion. The overall cost in terms of
suffering and long-term disabilities far exceeds the
monetary costs of this problem.
The authors of this breakthrough study have provided
new evidence that periodontal disease in pregnant women
may be a significant risk factor for low birth preterm
weight. The study suggests that 18% of all pre-term low
birth weight cases may be attributable to periodontal
disease. It also notes that gum disease represents a
previously unrecognized and clinically important risk
factor for pre-term low birth weight babies.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

"You know, that's an idea. Why don't we call Riata over
here for a visit. I'll bet it has been a while since she has
been home and much longer since she has been here."
"Sam, that's a terrific idea. Call her and ask her to
come." Mae thought Riata might like to get away for a while.
She was the type of girl who worked so hard at what she was
doing she never thought of taking a break. It would be good
for her.
Sam left the group to go sit on the beach for a bit. He
wanted to be alone when he sent communication to Riata.
In his mind he sent the message, "Riata. Some of us are
sitting down at Mae's place in the village in South America,
thinking of you. Please come visit us today and stay for a
while. I am sure the kids can handle things for a while."
Then he waited. He knew she could get back to him
immediately, but he also knew she would look things over,
give some last minute instructions and then make the
decision.
Sure enough, in five minutes Sam knew she would arrive
today. He rose and walked back to the group in front of
Mae's. "She's coming. We'll see her today." Sam let the
group know of his communications.
"Good! I haven't seen Riata for a very long time. I look
forward to seeing her." Eloise missed the two girls, Riata
and Oomano. "Hey, why don't we call Oomano and Romano?
For that matter why not Abetta and Miguele too?"
"Okay, Tinkerbell. Give them a call." Sam thought he'd
like to see them.
"You know, guys, we're going to have a party going here
before we know it." Mazunta had come to sit with the group.
He was paying attention to what was going on and pretty much
summarized their activity with that one statement.
David and Pam came over, following some chores they were
working on. "Hi, folks, good to see you. Ben, Helen, I'm
glad you came down. How are things in Pinehill?"
"They are fine, David. It is good to see you, too. I see
things are fine in your life."
"Yes. Both Pam and I have been away on the work, here
and there. The kids came on a couple trips. They are doing
fine and I guess you could say all is well. We ran into an
odd situation with a church group the other day, though."
Sam's and Ben's ears perked up. They liked to hear of
all situations. "Go on." Ben was pushing David.
"We were asked to go to Mexico. There is an area there
where a bishop is trying to make some points with Rome. He's
exerting his influence over the people, suggesting they
aren't giving enough of their income to the church. More, he
is saying they do not attend church as often as they should.
He is saying that a true catholic should attend everyday.
This is hard on the people. Eeking a living out of this land
is hard at the best of times. They need no further expense
imposed upon them by the church. The church is working on
the women. They seem to have the time to be there and are
concerned with getting the kids to church. Now the ladies
are working on their men. The whole thing is solely for this
bishop and nothing more. He has no concern whatever for the
congregation. He is only looking to make points with Rome."
"I've seen that before, David. I went through that kind
of thing with the church in Matto Grosso. Riata had a real
problem with them. The church was the one who commissioned
her shooting. The whole thing backfired on the church but
they were the ones responsible for causing her to be shot.
Later, years later, some of the same church people then
tried to get all the revenues from the shrine. They were
jealous of the work being done at the shrine. The church, in
fact, set up small missions all the way around the shrine.
They wanted their presence there to be seen as being a part
of the shrine. Their sole purpose was to collect money from
the misinformed attendees at the shrine. I put a stop to
that fast."
"I guess, Sam, we might ultimately have to do that in
that Mexico situation too. The people are receiving no
further benefit from this pressure. Actually it is hurting
them. The bishop keeps driving though. He wants more money
and he wants attendance figures up so when he is on
convention he is held up as the example to follow. I might
have to cause him to trip and fall. It would be good to do
that in public, that is to say amongst his peers so the idea
not only does not spread but gets stopped in its tracks."
"They hold retreats, conclaves, meetings within each
area over which a cardinal presides. All bishops must attend
and as many priests as possible must attend. Wait until the
next one of those is held and you will find the way to
handle that situation." Sam offered some ideas.
"I will, Sam. You don't think that is interfering?"
"David, I think all churches interfere with their
congregations finding the way to truth. I am not in favor of
any organization that steers people away from the direct
teachings of Jesus. These people are in it for their own
sake only and care not for what happens to those who support
them. Behind closed doors the churchmen laugh at the way
they control the masses."
"That's the impression I got, Sam. I think this is a
selfishly motivated move on the part of one man who wants to
climb the ladder of promotion, nothing more." David was
beginning to expand his vision once he knew he was in a
group that felt the same way he did.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Landlubber: How did the "landlubber" get that name?
The "Lubber" is not, as so many suppose, from "lover," but
from the Danish lobbes, meaning a "clown" or "bumpkin". So
the term means any person who lives on land and acts
inexperienced or awkward aboard ship.

HA! HA! HA!
Flying home after visiting her daughter in England, a woman
arranged to have her husband meet her plane at the
Vancouver, B.C. airport. This meant a stop at the border
crossing between the United States and Canada, where her
husband was asked: "What is your reason for entering the
country?" and "How long are you planning to stay?"
He replied that he was picking his wife up at the airport
after her trip to England. Without missing a beat, the
guard asked two more questions in the same businesslike
tone:
"Is the house clean?" and "Are there fresh flowers on the
table?"
