TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
How long does it take to get caffeine out of your system?
What is a "googol"?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Is caffeine addictive?
Addiction is a strong dependence on a drug characterized by
severe withdrawal symptoms, tolerance to a given dose (or
the need for more and more of the drug), and the loss of
control (the need to consume the substance at all costs).
Addicts may exhibit antisocial behavior or even commit
crimes to perpetuate the abuse. According to the Coffee
Science Source, an organization created by the National
Coffee Association to disseminate the most up-to-date
information on coffee, caffeine and health, coffee drinkers
do not exhibit these signs of addiction. (Maybe that's
because coffee is so readily available? Who knows what we
coffee drinkers would do if we couldn't get our morning
fix?) The Coffee Science Source DOES acknowledge that
caffeine withdrawal can cause temporary headaches, fatigue,
and drowsiness.
Is caffeine illegal anywhere?
Caffeine is illegal in at least one country. Burma's ruling
junta declared caffeine a narcotic in 2000. The announcement
-- in the English language New Light of Myanmar newspaper --
did not say whether coffee drinkers would be prosecuted
under the law or what penalties they'd face. Under Burmese
law, the possession of narcotics carries tough penalties --
including death.

Consensus grows on climate change
By Roger Harrabin
Environment Correspondent, BBC News
The global scientific body on climate change will report
soon that only greenhouse gas emissions can explain freak
weather patterns.
Simultaneous changes in sea ice, glaciers, droughts, floods,
ecosystems, ocean acidification and wildlife migration are
taking place.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had previously
said gases such as CO2 were "probably" to blame.
Its latest draft report will be sent to world governments
next month.
A source told the BBC: "The measurements from the natural
world on all parts of the globe have been anomalous over the
past decade.
"If a few were out of kilter we wouldn't be too worried,
because the Earth changes naturally. But the fact that they
are virtually all out of kilter makes us very concerned."
He said the report would forecast that a doubling of
greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere would bring
a temperature rise of 2-4.5C, or maybe higher.
This is an increase on projections in the last IPCC report,
which suggested that the rise could be as little as 1.5C.
Uncertainties remain
The scientists will say there is still great uncertainty
about the pace and scope of future change, although by the
end of the century global temperatures could increase by up
to 5.8C.
The doubling of CO2 from pre-industrial stable levels (270
parts per million) is expected to happen around the middle
of the century.
Extreme weather events indicate man-made change, the IPCC
says What really worries the scientists is that we are
already seeing major disruptions despite having increased
CO2 by just 30%.
A recent scientific report commissioned by the UK government
warned that the world might already be fixed on a path that
would begin melting the Greenland ice cap. That in turn
would start raising sea levels throughout the world.
There will be sceptics, predominantly in the US, who will
accuse the IPCC of trying to scare policy-makers into action
with their report.
But the broad international expert consensus embodied in the
IPCC will make it harder for the US administration to say
that climate change is a problem for the future which can be
solved by technological advances.
In a meeting with climate campaigners, UK Prime Minister
Tony Blair said the world needed to engage the Americans,
Chinese and Indians in agreement over a figure for CO2
stabilisation.
But this is unlikely to happen while US President George W
Bush is in office; his representative told the December
climate conference in Montreal that the US would not agree
any targets for reducing CO2.
President Bush's chief adviser, James Connaughton, said
recently that it was pointless discussing a safe CO2 level,
as we could not be sure how resistant the world would be to
greenhouse gases.
Maybe we could double CO2 with impunity, or maybe we could
increase it threefold or fourfold; the issue was not worth
discussing, he said.
Targets and timetables needed
Mr Blair echoed President Bush's call for new technologies
to combat climate change.
But both men were told by international business leaders
last year that more expensive new technologies would not
supplant cheap dirty technologies unless governments set
binding targets and timetables for reducing greenhouse
gases, which the US has rejected.
There is little sign of President Bush changing direction on
climate The prime minister confirmed that his long-delayed
climate strategy review would be published this month, and
would strive to meet his unilateral target of cutting
Britain's CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010.
BBC News has been told that the central policy in the
review, the CO2 cut for big business, is still being
contested, with the prime minister's industry adviser
Geoffrey Norris urging a more lax target than the one
demanded by the environment department Defra.
Central figures in the review process are now admitting that
the 20% target will be virtually impossible to hit, and are
looking for a "respectable" near miss.
The definition of "respectable" is still under ferocious
debate.

by Karin Henderson
The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 16 of 31
This landmark study is important because both
osteoporosis and periodontal disease are serious public
health concerns for tens of millions of North
Americans. Osteoporosis affects more than 20 million
people in the U.S. and accounts for nearly 2 million
fractures a year.
Gastrointestinal Disorders To date, the most
significant relationship between dental disease and
gastrointestinal disorders is from tooth loss. The
edentulous (without teeth) patient, is the most
vulnerable to gastrointestinal and other related
problems.
However, one study showed that those with dentures are
also subject to numerous health problems, directly
related to their inability to properly chew their food.
This study concluded that most of the subjects showed a
low chewing (masticatory) performance classification.
These subjects took more medication for
gastrointestinal disorders than those with a higher
chewing performance. Poor chewing was also associated
with a decrease in vitamin A and fiber intake, which
was mainly the result of lower intakes of fruits and
vegetables. This condition seemed more likely to affect
women in the study. In the edentulous person, with a
deficient chewing performance, reduced consumption of
fiber-rich foods that are hard to chew could provoke
gastrointestinal disturbances and affect overall
health.
Research indicates that changes in food preferences and
subsequent nutrient/vitamin deficiencies are associated
with tooth loss. One study provided a sound basis for
why the denture wearer does not achieve the necessary
breakdown of food substances. The research indicated
that the chewing efficiency of those wearing dentures
was about one-sixth that of a person with natural
teeth. In addition, evidence suggests that nutritional
deficiencies, regardless of their cause, are associated
with impaired immune responses. One obvious conclusion
is that a person with dentures would need to chew his
or her food 6 times as long as a person with natural
teeth.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
The kids enjoyed living by higher law. It permitted them
to speak on equal footing with the adults and they were
accepted as such. They also enjoyed their Mom and Dad
playing with each other. The signs of love were everywhere
and these little forays into frivolity were some of them.
Children in this village were permitted to grow up with
a rock solid confidence. Fear had no place here, neither did
the game of one-upsmanship. Equality was the order of the
day here, indeed it was mandated. Adults would step in fast
if they found any of the kids not treating one another
equally. There was no "wrong side of the tracks" in this
village.
The whole village was involved in raising the children.
No adult thought themselves wrong if they reprimanded
another's child. All adults were interested in the same
thing and all adults fed the kids, played with the kids,
disciplined the kids, even if they were not their own kids.
The kids themselves, accepted this. They knew when they were
doing right and when they were doing wrong. They had no
problem with discipline from anyone and there was certainly
no running home to Mom and Dad. Each had seen their Mom and
Dad act that way toward other children.
In that way the village was a community made up of
people who each cared about the other. Who fed who wasn't an
issue. Who disciplined who wasn't an issue. Who slept over
and where wasn't an issue. Togetherness, love, equality,
community spirit, those were the issues. Having each child
wax strong and be a contributing member of the community,
that was the issue.
In a small village like this one that kind of
togetherness could be practiced and it was not only natural,
but highly practical. The result was the village was a
unified group, a unit. Each member was respected and each
carried their share of the load. In that way they could
withstand outside pressures and choose carefully who they
would accept and what they would accept.
The village soon learned they would accept those who
lived by higher law. They found they were safer, healthier
and lived longer because of accepting these unique higher
law people. Besides every one who lived by higher law
accepted the concepts and principles by which the village
lived and they, too, contributed.
Eloise, David and Pam, plus Mae had been accepted as
members of the village many many years ago. Boolanga and
Mazunta had learned higher law and were already trusted
members of this society. As the years went by and these
people taught the children, the village simply became
stronger.
Then one day Sam Henry came and took all the children
away for a couple days. The village missed the kids
something awful. Yet Sam brought them all back each having
taken the final steps toward living by higher law. Every
household who had children now had children live by higher
law. That pleased the villagers very much.
Sam and the family were always treated as special. Maybe
because they were related to the village's beloved Missy
(Eloise). She was loved mostly because of herself. Yet she
was also the wife of the villages headman, Mazunta who held
an extremely high position in the minds of the villagers.
Mazunta was at once, humble and strong. He was at once
kind and fierce. He was at once gentle yet powerful. He had
always shown a wisdom beyond his years and because of that
was made village headman far younger than any headman before
him.
Ben and Helen Striker were also highly respected and
welcome in this village. Ben always conducted himself with
the stature and confidence of the police chief. Those are
ways he learned when he was chief and he simply carried on
even after learning higher law. He exuded confidence and
strength. Folks like to be around Ben. No matter what
calamity arose Ben would always resolve it. That came as
natural to him as breathing. He never even thought about
it. If a problem arose it was to be fixed. If it wasn't
fixed by the time Ben got to it then he would look after it.
He never left a trail of anything behind him, except
success.
It was in this atmosphere and with these thoughts that
the village put on a special fire this night. There were no
ceremonies, no speeches, no events. They just built the fire
higher and the ladies prepared lots of food. They well knew
this night's fire would go well into the wee hours of the
morning.
The village kids especially liked these nights. They
were allowed to mix and mingle with the adults. They would
listen keenly and learn. They knew there was a big world
outside this village and they always would come in close and
listen to Sam.
Tonight there was the family from Matto Grosso. That was
way down-river from the trading town. They were friends of
Missy Eloise. It was a pleasure to have this family here.
They fit right in with village ways, including helping out
at times like tonight. The lady, Abetta, was especially good
with kids and food. They shared a lot of ideas and each came
away the wiser.
The weather was working up a rain storm. It looked like
it would hit tonight and spoil the fire. Mazunta and
Boolanga made sure this spot would remain dry this night.
Romano decided he wanted to play a game of ball before
the fire and before dark. Every kid in the village went down
to the beach. He was like a magnet. The kids followed him
everywhere he went.
"He's just a big kid at heart," said Oomano. "He does
this at home too. The kids follow him wherever he goes. You
look out the window and he'll be walking down the street and
behind him will be a dozen kids. He loves them."

"theft"?

"You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that

"What are you talking about? That's one of the largest banks

"I don't think so," she sniffed. "They just returned one of
