What is "Silly Putty" made of?

"Silly Putty" contains boric acid and silicone oil. The
rubbery compound, great for molding into silly shapes and
for peeling pictures off the comic pages, was not originally
designed to be a toy. It was invented in 1943 at General
Electric Laboratories for use during World War II as a
synthetic rubber. Store owner Paul Hodgson is the man
responsible for buying a lot of it and putting it in small
plastic eggs as a toy.

How old is the game of marbles?

A child's Egyptian tomb from 3000 BC contained the
knucklebones of sheep and dogs. Scholars believe the bones
were used to play a game similar to the modern game of
marbles.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

It Is None Of Their Business!

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing
life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with
education. He argued "What's a kid going to learn from
someone who decided his best option in life was to become a
teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they
say about teachers: "Those who can do. Those who can't
teach."

To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher,
Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness,
replied, "You want to know what I make?"

"I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and
an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not do
his or her very best."

"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in
absolute silence."

"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them criticize."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them write."

"I make them read, read, read."

"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful, and definitely beautiful over and over and over
again, until they will never misspell either one of those
words again."

"I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on
their final drafts in English."

"I elevate them to experience music and art and the joy in
performance, so their lives are rich, full of kindness and
culture, and they take pride in themselves and their
accomplishments."

"I make them understand that if you have the brains, then
follow your heart... and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you pay them no attention."

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make a difference."

"What about you?"

There are too few people who stand up for who they are and
what they are doing, and too many like the businessman who
think they have all the answers in God's world.

Most folks have been trained so well to move when they hear
bells, it is hard to get them to see the truth that some
things are just not other peoples business.

When the phone rings, you answer it. When the doorbell
rings, you answer it. All of that may be okay, but the part
of that habit that gets most people is that they were taught
when they were young that if a person asks you a question,
you answer it.

Pavlov showed clearly the habit structure that can be
programmed into all living creatures, men among them.

Too many folks do not stop to think, when asked a question,
"Is this any of his/her business?"

I can remember being in an office one day when the secretary
came in late. One of the more aggressive salesmen in the
office immediately began to infer it was because of her sex
life the evening before. He then came straight out and asked
her, to which she gave an honest and complete reply.

I went up to her later and discussed with her the idea that
some things are just not other people's business.

Like all folks when they first hear the concept, she felt
that if she didn't answer that would be like lying. She had
been taught as a young child that you answer those who ask
you a question.

I reminded her that "It's none of your business." is an
answer.

I know it is hard to start with. I, too, had to learn that
lesson. One has to get over the idea that when you do not
answer the question the way the person wants, is somehow
like a lie. The simple truth is that some things are just
not their business and you are under no compulsion to
answer, except by that childhood training.

When a child you do the things of a child. When an adult you
now do the things of an adult.

It Is None Of Their Business!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 20 of 31

Mercury is classified as a neurotoxin and the toxicity
of mercury is undisputed. Chronic mercury poisoning can
impair the blood and cardiovascular system. It can
cause genetic mutations and can interfere with, or
overload, the natural detoxification pathways of the
liver, kidneys, skin, and bowel. It can impair the
function of the nervous, endocrine, enzymatic,
gastrointestinal, reproductive, and urinary systems. It
can increase allergic reactions and act as a harmful
antibiotic, killing both good and harmful bacteria in
the gut. Mercury can also cause a great deal of tissue
damage by creating an abundance of free radicals,
suspected to be one of the underlying causes of all
degenerative diseases.

One study indicated that mercury can interfere with
leukocytes. It also showed how it could not only
compromise the body’s natural defenses, but also
promote tissue injury via the local production of
oxygen free radicals. Another study demonstrated that
mercury can inactivate neutrophils. These important
immune system components are responsible for killing
fungi inside the body (blood and soft tissue). Mercury
toxicity was also shown to inhibit their ability to
kill Candida.

But mercury can also have devastating secondary effects
on the body by depleting it of the important
antioxidants the body needs to not only remove mercury
and other heavy metals, but to fight free radicals and
other toxins. This happens because each atom of mercury
that is removed from the body requires an escort of 1
to 2 molecules of glutathione (the body’s most abundant
and important antioxidant for removing mercury and
other heavy metals). As you can see, over time, more
and more glutathione is lost, creating a deficiency of
it and an increase in mercury being stored in the body.
This indirect, or secondary, effect of mercury is
devastating to the immune system and can seriously
reduce the body’s ability to deal with other diseases.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

"We have become complacent!"

Those were the opening words of the speech the cardinal
was giving to the gathering of priests and bishops in
Mexico.

"Over the years we have become lazy, passive rather than
progressive. We have laid back and thought we were doing our
work by being there. We have lost the fire in our bellies
and the church sits stagnant. There has been no growth in
the past ten years. We have not even kept up with the
increase in population."

The cardinal was advancing a theme to the group.
Initially it appeared as if he was going to have them become
missionaries again, to go out and convert whole groups
of people.

Earlier in the day, just after the registration process
had begun, the cardinal had called the bishop whose church
was showing increased attendance and increased revenues. The
pair of them sat in the suite of rooms that had been set
aside for the cardinal.

The bishop entered and was escorted into the presence of
the cardinal by two other bishops whose job it was to wait
on the cardinal.

The pair of them spoke at length. The cardinal wanted to
know all he could about what the bishop was doing to create
the numbers he saw in the reports.

The bishop explained how he had the congregation now
coming to church every day, rather than just one day a week.
He was working with the women to ensure every kid in the
villages were attending church. He has set up men's groups
and also required the men to attend mass daily.

Later, after he had that happening he began to work on
the people concerning their donations. He did not feel they
were contributing ten percent of their income to God. He
explained he was trying to explain the importance of that
but it did not get very far. He then resorted to putting the
people on guilt trips, advising their generosity toward the
church would be noted in heaven and their failure to meet
scriptural levels of giving would cause severe conditions
when one met his God.

"That seemed to work. They are now responding almost
daily with their offerings."

"Are they doing this willingly?" asked the cardinal.

"Many complain, but I remind them they are building up
their treasure in heaven and one day the whole family will
come to see it is the way."

The real truth was the church was breaking the backs of
those it was supposed to serve. The parishioners had hardly
anything to eat before the bishop began his "I want money"
campaign. Now they were literally starving. He was creating
a state of poverty within the area of his influence. Many of
the priests underneath him were also complaining because
they could see, at street level, what happened when the
church took more of the money the people had.

What all this amounted to was extortion, plain and
simple. The bishop was using the trust placed in him by the
people and using it to further his own ends. He offered not
one shred of benefit to the people, but hardship only.

This, of course, was not reported to the cardinal. Even
so he, too, was showing good numbers to Rome. It is doubtful
he would have voluntarily changed.

At this meeting the cardinal showed no swiftness of mind
whatever. He had predetermined the actions of this bishop
and the priests under him was good for the church. With no
regard for the people he felt he wanted to have all his
priests become aggressive toward building attendance and
revenues as had this bishop.

Addressing the congress once more he said, "There is a
bishop among us who has shown us the way. Under his
leadership the parishes under his influence have increased
attendance and increased revenues. It points clearly the way
for all parishes to do likewise."

There were murmurs from the floor. All knew the bishop
and the priests under him. Rumors had been circulating
throughout the registration process and all night and day up
to the commencement address now going on.

"In the following days we shall hold workshops, meetings
and special events all geared to addressing this problem.
The bishop and his priests will be made available to you all
that you may learn. We must get out there and serve the
people and what better way than having them come to church."

That was what was said on the surface. Yet, in the
cardinal's suite, when alone with his own personnel, he
laughed and pointed out this would surely lead to better
reports going to Rome. They would all laugh and joke over
how they would increase the revenues and how that would look
in their reports.

The cardinal was a selfish man. He had his eyes on a
posting in Rome. For all priests even just a visit to Rome
was a blessed event. But to work in the Vatican, that was
the goal of this cardinal and he had, he thought, found the
means whereby. This change in policy he intended to enact at
this congress. He began working on his closing remarks,
hoping he could find the words to send the priests and
bishops back to their parishes wholly charged to cause
similar performances in their own churches.

He was having some difficulty coming up with the words
he wanted. He required each of the bishops serving him to
write his closing remarks, hoping that between the three of
them they would arrive at just the right things to say.

He continued his efforts, to no avail. He couldn't
understand what his trouble was. He wasn't thinking
straight. He reached for a drink and continued his efforts.

Using this process he wrote and drank the night away.
His staff found him slumped over his desk in the morning,
sleeping off the effects of the drinking he did last night.

Magenta: Why is the color magenta called that?

The color got its name from the Battle of Magenta, fought in

named to commemorate the battle.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

How To Establish Company Policy . . .

Start with a cage containing five monkeys.

Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set
of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the
stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he
touches the stairs, spray all of the monkeys with cold
water.

After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same
result - all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty
soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the
other monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, turn off the cold water. Remove one monkey from the
cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the
banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and
horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another
attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the
stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and
replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs
and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the
punishment with enthusiasm.

Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The
new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well.

Two of the four monkeys that beat him have no idea why they
were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are
participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, all
the monkeys that have been sprayed with cold water have been
replaced.

Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs.
Why not?

Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been
around here.

And that's how company policy begins..........
