ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What happens to the bear's body during hibernation?
The bear sleeps, without food, for a long time. In the
southern Appalachian Mountains, the black bear will
generally sleep from December through March and can sleep
longer, up to seven months. Bears prepare for hibernation in
the fall, eating generously and putting on about 100 extra
pounds, which they will gradually lose during the months of
hibernation. During hibernation itself, the bear's digestive
system stops and the accumulated body fat provides the only
nourishment. Scientists do not fully understand how bears
break down their body wastes and convert them back into
protein. It's also unclear how their bodies manage the large
amounts of cholesterol that build up during hibernation. The
bear's normal heart rate of about 80 heart beats per minute
drops to just 8 beats per minute. The bear's thick fur keeps
its body temperature just a few degrees below normal.
How deeply do bears sleep when in hibernation?
Surprisingly, the bear's sleep is relatively light and he
can be awakened by even a small disturbance. (Remember that
if you think about going into a bear's den in winter.) Their
hibernation might be better thought of as very long naps --
a bear can doze for weeks at a time -- than a single
unbroken sleep. Here's the real shocker, though. Black bears
give birth to one to four cubs during hibernation, generally
in January or February. The young cubs are born weighing
less than a pound and are nourished by their slumbering
mother's milk. By the time spring comes, they may weigh as
much as eight pounds.

Mexico discovers 'huge' oil field
Mexican President Vicente Fox speaks in front of the Noxal 1
deep water drilling platform
Mexican President Vicente Fox has announced the discovery of
a new deep-water oil field, which is believed to contain
10bn barrels of crude.
The field is in the Gulf of Mexico, and Mexico says it could
be bigger than its largest oil field, Cantarell.
Production there is said to have declined sharply in recent
years.
Mr Fox made the announcement as figures showed the country's
total oil reserves had fallen 2% between 2003 and 2005.
Perforation of the well known as Noxal 1, which is located
about 100km (60 miles) from the port of Coatzacoalcos on the
coast of Veracruz state, started in December.
The oil is under 930 metres (0.6 miles) of water and a
further 4,000 metres (2.5 miles) underground.
Visiting the drilling platform, Mr Fox said: "With Noxal we
will begin a new era of oil exploration in our country."
The government says its investment in exploration will
enable Mexico to maintain its current output in the future.
With at least 3.4m barrels per day, Mexico is Latin
America's largest crude producer ahead of Venezuela and
Brazil, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The oil industry provides one third of the Mexican state
income. More than half the crude extracted is exported,
mainly to the United States.
The state-owned company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) is among
the biggest players in the international oil market.
Mexico is not a member of oil producers' cartel Opec.

Campbell Hooks Up With Harlem Globetrotters
Food marketer Campbell Soup is joining forces with the clown
princes of basketball--the Harlem Globetrotters--to promote
the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle to kids. Under
terms of the three-year agreement, the company will act as a
presenting sponsor of the team, which is now based in
Phoenix.
"We are very committed to helping improve the health of
children and this new relationship will help us highlight
the benefits of active play," said Douglas Conant, president
and CEO of Campbell.
Plans calls for both Campbell and the team to participate in
pre-game clinics and summer camps for kids, and Campbell
will tout the team on the Internet, in point-of-purchase
materials and in free-standing inserts.
The Globetrotters will feature Campbell's logo in its TV and
print ads promoting the team's 2006 North American tour.
"Organizations succeed by aligning themselves with those who
share their goals of leadership, innovation and passion for
execution," said Mannie Jackson, chairman and CEO of the
Harlem Globetrotters.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 26 of 31
It should be noted that today people are exposed to
greater quantities of fluoride than 25 years ago. At
that time, the major source of fluoride exposure was
fluoridated water. Today, it is also found in
mouthwash, toothpaste, rinses, and tablets. Some
evidence shows that fluorosis has caused dental
fluorosis (unsightly stained and pitted enamel) in
children in areas where the water isnt even
fluoridated. No one knows how much fluoride each
individual is getting. Fluoride toxicity is definitely
something to watch for, especially in communities where
the water is fluoridated.
Topical fluoride applied at the dental office has been
shown to effectively reduce decay in individuals whose
teeth are susceptible to it. I dont have a problem
with this form of application as it is controlled and
little, if any, will be ingested. The key to fluoride
toxicity is that it has to enter the body and thus
topical application of it, done properly, prevents that
occurrence. But I do have a concern about high fluoride
concentrations applied to the teeth of young children
without adequate protection against ingestion. There
have been documented cases of fluoride toxicity when
very young children swallowed an excessive amount of
topical fluoride gel.
Idiopathic Diseases I previously mentioned the
relationship of oral health to diseases that are
idiopathic, or those we dont know, or are uncertain,
of their cause.
In a very real sense the idiopathic (unknown) aspect
makes it imperative that those that are dealing with
any idiopathic disease or illness MUST consider every
health problem as a potential cause or contributor of
their problem. I say this because any of them, or any
combination of them, could be a contributing factor.
The only way to actually know which ones may be
involved in an idiopathic health issue is to eliminate
each of them and let the body tell you what role it has
played. As oral health is in my area of expertise, I
have listed those oral health issues that I KNOW have
an effect, some very serious such as amalgam
fillings/chronic mercury poisoning and gum disease. But
all oral health issues must be evaluated and dealt
with.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Billy was a good way ahead of her. He turned his head to
see where she was. He tripped. He hadn't been watching where
he was going and ended up rolling head over heels down the
slope for a good 20 feet. The only way he could stop was to
straighten his body out.
The next thing he knew Sonora flopped on top of him and
completely knocked the wind out of him. He was struggling to
gasp some air. Sonora, unaware of his plight, was laughing
up a storm.
It was all Billy could do to get air. Sonora's weight on
his rib cage was no help. Finally, he was able to take a
deep breath. He thought he must have been turning blue. A
couple deep breaths and he knew he would live.
"So, you think the village wants to get rid of me do
you?" With that statement she poked him in the ribs.
Having the wind knocked out of you was one thing, but
being tickled when you were still on the path of recovering
was another matter. It was more than Billy could stand.
He wriggled to get away from her. "No more. No more." He
held up his hand to stop her. He was bent over and gasping,
searching for that quantity of air that would take the
pressure away from his lungs. He coughed a couple times.
It was only then Sonora realized he was out of wind.
"What happened? Are you okay?"
Billy couldn't talk just yet and again held up his hand
to signal such.
"Phew!" He stood tall, then bent backwards, stretching
his stomach muscles. "Oh, boy! That was quite a bout. I was
nearly out of wind from the fall, then you landed on me and
that did it. Then when you began to tickle me I thought I
was a goner. Wow! I haven't had that happen to me since I
was just a kid. I'm all right. You didn't know."
"Oh, Billy. I'm sorry."
"I know you are. Don't worry about it. The worst is
past. I asked for it anyway. This is just my reward."
"Well, I wouldn't be so harsh, but you're right. You
asked for it mister."
Sonora came over to him and put her arms around him. She
pulled him tight and held on.
The longer Sonora held him the more conscious he became
of her touch, her smell, how she felt in his arms. His
thoughts were leaving the situation of his troubles, at
least one kind of trouble, and now gravitated to another.
Both of them were sharing thoughts of lust, without
either saying anything. He wanted her and she wanted him.
Yet, they had agreed, only after the wedding. Their bodies
were telling each other what was going on. She could feel
him and he could feel her.
"You know, we could get in trouble doing this in broad
daylight, within full view of the village."
She knew he wasn't worried about all that. They were far
enough from the village they could have gotten away with
what they were doing, but she did get his message. "I love
you Billy Hendricks. Don't stop being proper. I love you for
it even though at this minute I could kill you for being so
right."
"What do you mean? You damned near killed me chasing me
down the hill!" Billy laughed. It broke the "spell".
"Why you selfish little boy you! You know why I was
chasing you Billy Hendricks. Don't think you can get away
with it either. I'll get you for that. You just wait until
you aren't quite so wheezy." She laughed at him. "You're
breathing like an old man."
"Must be the company I keep." He had a twinkle in his
eye.
"Billy Hendricks, you're incorrigible. You just never
stop, do you?"
"Aw, come on, sugar. I'm just teasing you."
"I know. And I know you had to break up our little tryst
too. Billy, do you hear something?" Sonora cocked her ear.
"I think I hear the sound of someone in trouble. Can you
hear that?"
"I can't hear anything, but I am sure sensing it. It's
coming from the valley floor. It seems to be in the middle
of that herd of wildebeest. Come." Billy held out his hand
for her and the pair of them were instantly at the site
Billy sensed.
There, in the middle of the herd of animals, was a young
man. He had been out on his "becoming a man" time. He was
weak from hunger, had stepped in a hole and broke his ankle.
During his efforts to get home he became a target of
predators. Usually they didn't attack, except hyenas were
anxious to get the job finished. Several had come in close
enough to take bites of flesh from his legs. The lad was
near unconscious.
"Sonora, lay him out, flat on his back. Make the ground
soft for him so he can be comfortable."
As Sonora bent over to do that, Billy went to the lads
feet. There he stood, facing the lad. Billy closed his eyes
and looked skyward. He concentrated all his energies. Then
he stretched out his arms, palms toward the young man. Beams
of white light left Billy's hands as if they were lightning
from the sky. "Rise up and walk."
The command visibly shook the young man. All he could
think of was whether or not he was going to die. Getting up
and walking was the furthest thing from his mind. But
Billy's words were no mere words. They soaked into the very
fiber of the lads being. He looked Billy right in the eyes
and he knew. He had to stand.
Sonora was going to help, but Billy waved her off. The
lad had to do it himself, and as he did he was visibly
becoming whole again.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Easy as A.B.C. Why do we say that something easy is "as easy
as A.B.C."?
Because the school children of early England, given a
hornbook and told to read it, found the first part of it the
easiest - for then they only had to read off the letters of
the alphabet. There is no easier reading.

HA! HA! HA!
As a young married couple, a husband and a wife lived in a
cheap housing complex near the military base where he was
working.
Their chief complaint was that the walls were paper-thin and
that they had no privacy. This was painfully obvious when
one morning the husband was upstairs and the wife was
downstairs on the telephone. She was interrupted by the
doorbell and went to greet her neighbor.
"Give this to your husband," he said thrusting a roll of
toilet paper into her hands. "He's been yelling for it for
15 minutes!"
