TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Why doesn't the axolotl grow up?

In Lake Xochimilco, adult salamanders exist side by side
with axolotls, both reproducing. There are many more
axolotls than salamanders and most never grow into mature
salamanders, but remain in the axolotl state. Researchers
have found that axolotls can be MADE to grow up by adding
iodine to the water in which they live. It appears that
remaining in the larval stage is linked to the absence of a
hormone called thyroxin and that iodine stimulates the
thyroid to produce the hormone. A physical jolt to the
axolotl can also make it grow up (don't you wish you could
do that with teenagers?) It's possible that something about
the composition of the water in Lake Xochimilco prevents
them from maturing. There may also be another evolutionary
reason: Lake Xochimilco is surrounded by barren land with
little food. By remaining an axolotl, the creature never
leaves the water and doesn't compete for food with creatures
that go about on land.

Where do we get the strange name "axolotl"?

"Axolotl" is an Aztec word meaning "water monster" or "water
dog." Another popular translation of the name connects the
Axolotl to the god of deformations and death, Xolotl.

Tips And Tidbits

VoIP: Not As Destructive As You Might Think

VoIP, Voice over Internet Protocol, is out there, so are
third generation cellular networks, wireless e-mail devices,
and a convenient means of syndicating Web content into a
single access point, called RSS. However, changes come fast
and furious in the technology industry, but changes in
regular consumer behavior lag far behind those of early
adopters. By all media accounts--meaning any of the
countless stories out there about how VoIP spells the end
for the public switch telephone--the land line phone should
be dead already. To be sure, VoIP gets a lot of press from
providers like Skype and Vonage and cable companies like
Time Warner Cable, but for all the hoopla, the biggest
reason traditional phone companies lost 5.7 million
subscribers in 2005 was wireless, not VoIP. A Bell South
executive even said he doesn't see VoIP as nearly as big a
threat to their business as wireless, an industry most big
phone companies are also involved in. VoIP has a ways to go
before it becomes mainstream, as consumer adoption has yet
to really pick up. Lingering questions about the
technology's reliability still loom, for example. But it
could be that consumers just don't feel the need to
transition their phone service. Some analysts think VoIP
will be swallowed up in the melee over the next big Internet
phenomenon: video.

Accounting error raises GM's loss

GM is trying to turn around its fortunes

Struggling US car giant General Motors (GM) has been forced
to increase its annual 2005 losses by $2bn (£1.1bn) due to
accounting errors.

The company now says its losses totalled $10.6bn last year,
with the additional $2bn caused by errors at a mortgage
subsidiary.

GM said as a result it was now going to delay filing its
2005 annual report.

The company is also going to restate its results for the
years 2000 to 2004 due to the same error.

It added that it had further incorrectly accounted for some
supplier payments.

Unhappy investors

Analysts said the revelation of accounting errors would be
yet another blow to the credibility of a firm that is
struggling to turn around its fortunes.

"Is this another blow to management? I would say yes," said
Kevin Tynan, an analyst with Argus Research.

"But you can't say management was on very steady ground in
the eyes of investors [in the first place]."

JPMorgan analyst Himanshu Patel said the multitude of
accounting errors raised concerns about the company's
internal accounting controls.

Detroit-based GM has been cutting both costs and output to
cope with falling sales.

Earlier this month GM announced plans to raise $2bn through
the sale of 17.4% of its stake in Japanese carmaker Suzuki.

GM shares slid 4.9% to close at $21.13 on Friday after the
latest news.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 27 of 31

I will take Meniere’s Syndrome/Disease as an example.
There are a number of symptoms that, when taken
together, comprise Meniere’s syndrome. But not only are
we not sure what caused the disease, we are just as
uncertain about what trigger’s the symptoms associated
with Meniere’s. Thus, there could be a genetic cause
that predisposes this condition and other factors that
are involved in the triggering of symptoms. We just
don’t know. But what I suggest be considered is that
stress, in whatever form, could easily trigger the
various symptoms.

We know that stress takes many forms. We know that
emotional, psychological and physical stress can lower
the body’s resistance to disease. In short, stress
makes us more vulnerable to disease. Well, the reverse
is also true and all disease causes stress; some more
than others but all stress the body. It would seem
logical to assume that anyone with Meniere’s, or any
other idiopathic disease, would want to do everything
possible to eliminate every form of stress. This may be
easier said than done but I believe every effort must
be made if you want to reduce or eliminate any
potential triggering effect.

It is not in my area of expertise to tell you how to
deal with other avenues of stress in your life but I
will encourage you to make your best effort to
eliminate all oral health issues. The first step
includes a complete oral health evaluation. You must
know what is wrong before you can effective treat it.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

Finally standing, the boy had a smile on his face that
said it all. He was whole. He was out of pain. He could
walk, run and jump again. He could now go home, complete,
having finished his trip into manhood.

The lad thanked Billy and Sonora, then took off running.
That was a common mode of transportation with these people.
They could set up a pace and keep it all day long. They had
long legs that ate up the ground under them and centuries
ago they had learned the value of steady, non-stop running.
In the course of a day they could cover distances that would
put most men to shame.

Billy and Sonora knew the lad would be back in the
village long before they would, unless they transported
themselves by means of higher law.

The lad was happy, confident and enthusiastic. He well
knew what lay ahead of him when he returned successfully. It
was always an occasion in the village when a young man
completed this journey and returned safely. He would now be
looked upon as a man and expected to take on the
responsibilities of manhood.

Quietly, within themselves, Billy and Sonora mused over
the rhythms and seasons in the village. All things fit a
pattern directed by nature. The people did not run by a
clock that gave them minutes, seconds and pressure. They
moved about their day doing things that were a result of
patterns, systems and methods handed down to them from their
ancestors. And they would pass these ways on to their
children.

In this village there was never, or at least rarely
ever, anything new. What Billy and Sonora were doing would
create an entirely new people. They would not go about
looking for any new material goods, for learning higher law
would allow them to have anything they needed. They would
continue to live as they presently were, but they would each
be down deep happy, confident, peaceful, loving, powerful.
They would go off to help whenever called and return to the
peace and contentment of the village.

Both Billy and Sonora knew that not all in the village
would seek higher law. They knew the kids would do fine with
it and maybe 10% or 20% of the adults. However, as the
generations passed through the envelope of time it would
soon be that the children would be expected to do as their
parents. The children would grow up in a village wholly
expecting they could and would do as their folks. They would
see higher law practiced by everyone around them and would
take to it so natural they would give it hardly any thought.

"Life here is beautiful. You know that Sonora?"

"Honey, I enjoy living here, but I clearly don't see
what you see. I have been here all my life. I know nothing
else. Oh, I've gone to help out with many different things
where folks need help, and I've seen many places, but I
haven't lived anywhere else but here."

"Where I come from people live by the clock. They get up
according to a set time, they go to work according to a
schedule and they come home according to that timetable.
They have come to think money is the single most important
thing in their lives and everything they do revolves around
it. Sex is the next driving force they heed and then peer
pressure, where they join groups where they find these
things or they are just plain accepted. That is what
churches are in our country. They grow more from the people
feeling accepted into a social strata, rather than from any
level of importance being credited to the message. The
result is people are highly stressed. They are, all of them,
without exception, what we call 'up tight'. There isn't one
of them who will admit such, but that is the case. If you
brought any of them here to live, they couldn't do it. They
would not see life, they would see boredom. They would not
be happy with themselves, instead they would feel useless.
They fail to see what life is, question it, or go inside to
seek their Maker. My, we have so much work to do."

"No you don't, young man. That responsibility is not
yours. You are doing just fine and are to be commended for
who and what you are. You, too, young lady."

Billy and Sonora whipped around. There, behind them Sien
had touched down and had come for a visit.

"Hello, Sien. What are you doing here?" Billy was the
first to speak.

"I came to visit with you two. I am now glad I did. You
aren't to be worrying over mankind. The world is unfolding
as it should. It is not your job to 'convert' the world. It
is only your job to serve as an example that others may
choose to follow. You are doing wonderful work here. Keep it
up, yet never lose sight of the idea that you cannot make
these people's choices for them. Each must come unto their
Maker by themselves."

"Yeah! We actually know that Sien. It's just that life
would be so much more abundant for folks if they would only
choose to live by higher law."

"In truth, Billy, that is what we want, too. Slowly, as
time passes, the world is becoming more aware of spiritual
values. I don't mean religion, I mean spiritual values.
People are beginning to look deeply into the big questions
of life, and make choices that bring them closer to their
Maker. And, as you know, there are a few among them who will
find higher law because they intellectually see the wisdom
and therefor make a commitment. Work with those, Billy. They
will serve as examples."

"Mr. Sien, would you join us for supper. My Mom and Dad
would be tickled to see you again."

"No, thank you, Sonora. I just came to see how you two
were making out and to tell you that those who live by
higher law wholly support your marriage. You have created
quite a stir with this school of yours. You have attracted
much attention among our brothers. All have sent me to tell
you they offer their blessings unto you."

"Why thank you Sien. Please convey our love and thanks
unto all who sent you. Please return our blessings unto
them. It won't be long now and I'll be hitched to this gal
forever."

"That, you already are, my friend. Your marriage is only
to have everyone else believe it."

"Yeah, I guess I am. Boy, I'm glad I made such a good
choice. She is a wonderful soul mate."

Sonora blushed.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Necking: From what did the word "necking" get its current
meaning?

From the neck's being an added object of the affection and
the theoretical lower limit of action. The word "neck"
itself has its origin in the Dutch nekken, meaning "to
kill". Our neck acquired its name from the fact that you
pull or twist the neck of a chicken to kill it. but there's
no implied allusion to this origin in the current meaning of
"necking".

HA! HA! HA!

Keeping up with your children can send to you a
psychologist. Trying to figure them out is a task that no
one has conquered as this next joke shows.

Little Johnny has been bringing his drawings home from
kindergarten everyday since he started a month ago. Each day
his mother admires the pictures and hangs them on the
refrigerator. One thing starts bothering her though. Little
Johnny only uses black and browns for his drawings. Fearing
a problem with her young son and not wanting to make it
worse, she decides to take him to a child psychologist.

The psychologist delicately goes to work. He gives Johnny a
battery of psychological tests. He chats with Johnny.
Everything seems perfectly normal. Everyday for two weeks,
the tests continue. Yet everyday, little Johnny continues to bring
home drawings in only black and brown. Frustrated at not
being able to get to the root of the problem and fearful that
something is terrible wrong, the child psychologist decides to
give little Johnny some paper and a box of crayons and observe
what happens.

Little Johnny opens the box of crayons and says "oh boy! A
new box of crayons! At school we only have old boxes. The
only ones left in mine are black and brown!"
