TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What Latin American writer has written a story about a man
who transforms into an axolotl?

Who invented Lincoln Logs?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why doesn't the axolotl grow up?

In Lake Xochimilco, adult salamanders exist side by side
with axolotls, both reproducing. There are many more
axolotls than salamanders and most never grow into mature
salamanders, but remain in the axolotl state. Researchers
have found that axolotls can be MADE to grow up by adding
iodine to the water in which they live. It appears that
remaining in the larval stage is linked to the absence of a
hormone called thyroxin and that iodine stimulates the
thyroid to produce the hormone. A physical jolt to the
axolotl can also make it grow up (don't you wish you could
do that with teenagers?) It's possible that something about
the composition of the water in Lake Xochimilco prevents
them from maturing. There may also be another evolutionary
reason: Lake Xochimilco is surrounded by barren land with
little food. By remaining an axolotl, the creature never
leaves the water and doesn't compete for food with creatures
that go about on land.

Where do we get the strange name "axolotl"?

"Axolotl" is an Aztec word meaning "water monster" or "water
dog." Another popular translation of the name connects the
Axolotl to the god of deformations and death, Xolotl.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Many Roads Into The Town Square!

While talking with my semi-deaf uncle one evening, I noticed
that his "hearing aid" was actually an earphone from a
transistor radio. The wire had been cut and was sticking out
of his shirt.

"How does that help your hearing?" I asked.

"Don't help my hearing none," he replied. "Makes people talk
louder."

And that is often the key to being successful at what you
are doing.

The tried and true methods may not be so tried and true with
your particular project. If they aren't working for you,
then try other ways. If they don't work try different ways.

It is when you think a particular formula should work, and
it doesn't, that gets you confused. When one route to the
town square is blocked all you need do is try another.

Provided your methods be honest, it does not matter how you
arrive. What matters is that you arrive.

Don't go telling me I am stating the obvious. If it were so
obvious many more people would be millionaires, or more
successful at what they are doing.

You must stir the imagination. You must search deep inside
you for the answer as to the next route to try, As you keep
trying, you eliminate all the routes that are blocked to you
and each time you get closer to THE ONE that will work for
you.

It is the same old adage, "If at first you don't succeed,
try again." That does not mean, necessarily, that you
continue to try in exactly the same way. When you are trying
to reach an objective, it is the objective that is
important, not the route. You can alter the route.

The gentleman in the joke obviously felt he did not want to
invest in a hearing aid. However he accomplished his
objective by a thoroughly unique plan, took action and found
it worked. Now he can hear what folks say. That was his
objective. He wanted to hear what people say, without having
to invest in a hearing aid.

You, too, can arrive at the town square, your objective,
when you clearly understand there are - - -

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 28 of 31

Even if a thorough evaluation shows that a person with
Meniere’s doesn’t have ANY of these oral health
problems he or she will have accomplished a great deal
by eliminating a number of potential triggers. That
means one can move on to other health issues as a
potential cause.

I’ve run into those that try to isolate a particular
problem, such as Meniere’s or CFS, as if their major
health issue doesn’t involve the rest of the body. They
attempt to focus treatment solely in that one area and
although they generally get some relief from that
approach, if it is also related to other health issues,
they can never hope to truly eliminate their problem.
Plus, not doing so will still leave them vulnerable to
the side effects of those other health problems in the
future.

So while it would be truly wonderful to know a specific
cause for Meniere’s, it is still in a person’s best
interest to achieve optimal health. So looked at in the
right way the idiopathic aspect can really become a
motivating factor to identify and eliminate other
health problems.

The two oral health issues that I believe can
contribute to, cause, or trigger Meniere’s symptoms,
are mercury amalgam fillings and gum disease. But
because of its effect on the immune system I also
believe it would be important to consider the
individual’s sensitivity to dental materials and the
galvanic effect of dental fillings.

Real Age Evaluation It would be appropriate to end this
booklet with some insightful comments about the effects
of dental disease on longevity, by Dr. Michael F.
Roizen. In his classic book, Real Age: Are You as Young
as You Can Be? he offers a revolutionary, systematic
approach to calculating the aging effect of more than
100 different health behaviors. These range from diet
and medication to stress control and dental disease.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

The three of them chatted for a half hour or so and then
Sien took his leave. "I'll see you two at your wedding. Take
care now." And he was away.

Billy and Sonora hugged one another. It was nice to know
so many of their friends were behind them.

This hug didn't lead to lust. It did, however, lead to a
deep appreciation of each other and for their Maker. Each of
them was dedicated to serving their Maker and that gave them
a common bond unlike any other.

"Let's start walking back. I think we might have to
hurry into supper. Mom will have it ready in a couple hours
and we'll never walk back that fast, especially an old man
like you trying to walk up that hill." Sonora laughed a deep
and thorough laugh at the joke she just pulled. She had
visions of Billy wheezing and coughing as he was trying to
get up the hill.

Billy reacted also with laughter, but he spanked her on
the butt. "So, you think I'm an old man do you. You wait
until we're married and I'll show you how old I am."

The hill leading up from the Serengeti to Billy's and
Sonora's village was over a mile long and was pretty steep.
It was good exercise for anyone, even the young.

"Hello, you two. What have you been up to?" Kenyata was
cooking supper when the pair of them appeared from behind
the hut.

"We just went for a walk amongst the animals, Mom. Sien
joined us for a bit but couldn't stay long. He just brought
us good wishes. What with the school being shut down for a
month or so until this wedding is over, and Billy and I get
back from our time together, there isn't much to do."

"No, honey. That's right. The village and your Father
and I have the wedding pretty much under control. In a
couple days, though, you can go get all your guests. That'll
keep you busy. Then you'll have to be hosts."

"I look so much forward to that, Mom. It's going to be
so nice to see them all again. I can't wait."

"it will be nice, honey, now hand me that pot would you.
Thank you. You guys hungry?"

"Some, I guess."

"Mom, I could eat a wildebeest." Billy was hungry.

"Oh, you men. You're all alike. The road to your heart
is right through your stomach."

"Well, Mom. I'm getting the notion that sometimes it's
through something else, too."

The all roared with laughter. Mombudo, especially, got a
kick out of that one and he laughed off and on throughout
the whole meal.

Kenyata was a little more conservative. "I know what you
mean, honey. These men don't always think with their
brains." She laughed as she said it.

Both Kenyata and Mombudo knew the sexual pressure these
kids were under. If they were like the rest of the village
they would have long ago and often consummated their
relationship. But these kids had chosen to wait until after
they were married. They lived by higher law and they well
knew they would have the rest of their lives to have a
sexual relationship. Now, however, they chose to wait until
after they were married because they wanted their marriage
to be started on the right foot. They wanted to show respect
for each other and they wanted the power and strength that
comes from abstaining. They had chosen well, but the road
was a tough one.

"You two have done good. Your Father and I chose that
road too, when we were young. That is not the road many
choose, but for those who do there are many rewards. We have
a strong marriage and it made the pair of us stronger. It
gave us a strength that the whole village noticed. They knew
not from where it came but they all saw it and respected it.
Your Father and I know what you are going through and we're
proud of you for having chosen that path. Just a few more
days and your yearnings will be fulfilled."

The wedding was now a week away. Within three days Billy
and Sonora would go get their guests. The "guest city" had
been built and was ready. The village appeared to be in a
state of confusion but underneath what looked like chaos
they were organized and knew well what they were doing.

Some of the villagers went out of the village everyday
and into the jungle. They were the same villagers everyday.
Billy and Sonora wondered what they were up to, but did not
interfere or even snoop. They knew some preparations were
going on for the wedding the villagers did not want them to
see.

Billy, alone one day, sauntered over into the village.
Everyone was busy doing something. They were all smiles as
Billy walked past, but otherwise they were busy chattering
amongst themselves. While he was a welcome guest, they were
busy and didn't want him around. He was almost feeling like
an outcast. He knew they were working on wedding things and
that it was for him, but they sure didn't seem to have time
to talk.

Finally he spotted a village elder sitting by his hut
smoking on a long pipe.

"No place for a man to go just before his wedding."

"It sure seems that way. Everybody is busy and they
don't want to talk to me."

"So you think you will sit and talk with an old man who
looks like he has nothing to do?"

Billy laughed. "You are a kind old man and I like to be
with you. You have wisdom. I like that."

"Ahh. But only the wise might see that. You, too, have
much wisdom young man. You have made quite an impression on
this village. I have not ever in my lifetime, seen the
village put so much effort into a wedding for anyone. You
have become very important to them Billy. I am glad. I am
not long for this world any more. I am glad I leave the
village in good hands. It is good you have come, Billy."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Needle: Where did we get the expression "give him the
needle"?

The term comes from a tailor's practical joke. When a group
of tailors are sitting on the table side by side, one tailor
will take his needle and slyly jab another in the rear. The
startled reaction of the victim of this practical joke is
considered by many to be very funny.

HA! HA! HA!

Soon after my 16-year-old sister started working after
school as a grocery-store cashier, I went to see how she was
doing.

I tried to make myself inconspicuous as I waited to check
out my purchases. Ahead of me was a young man who was
flirting with my sister. Both embarrassed and amused by his
advances, she continued to ring up his groceries. Finally
the persistent fellow ventured, "Would you like to go out to
dinner with me tonight?"

Oblivious to his questions and adhering to her employee
training, she asked him, "How will you be paying?"
