What Latin American writer has written a story about a man
who transforms into an axolotl?
Julio Cortazar, a Latin American writer famous for his
magical realist fiction, wrote "The Axolotl." It's a great
story and just a little bit creepy.
Who invented Lincoln Logs?
John Lloyd Wright, the son of famed architect Frank Lloyd
Wright, invented the miniature hardwood beam kit that
eventually became known as "Lincoln Logs." John thought up
the idea for the children's building toy when he was on a
trip to Tokyo with his father in 1920. He was inspired by
the interlocking beam construction of the Imperial Hotel's
ceiling.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!

The Simplest Advice
In these days of do more, be more, have more, it may be wise
to get off the beaten track and reflect on what is best for
you in the workplace. What fits your lifestyle? What fits
your integrity? What captures your interest? What warms your
heart?
I once read a story about a young lawyer who was joining a
prestigious firm. She was spending a quiet evening with her
grandmother and she told her that she was going to do all
that she could to advance in her new organization. She
would take a night school course to become an expert in her
specialty, and join community organizations to bring in
business. She was determined to do everything and 'learn it
all'. To her mind, the picture she was painting was one of
the perfect employee. Doing all those things would win her
recognition, acceptance and an elevated career path.
The expected approval and enthusiasm from her grandmother
was not forthcoming. Smiling at her well-meaning
granddaughter, she said: "Be good at whatever you do and do
only what you are willing to do well." This startled the
young lawyer and caused her a great deal of deep thought.
After a few nights of poor sleep, she embraced her
grandmother's wisdom. Now she is the esteemed senior
partner in her firm.
Hopefully, you have chosen your work carefully. If not,
rethink it. If so, are you making sure that you are good at
what you do? Do you stay up-to-speed in your industry?
Then, add that next step, do only what you are willing to do
well. This may take some honesty but it will have tremendous
impact on all areas of your life.
Apply this wisdom liberally. Imagine the impact it will have
on your relationships!

Emotions generally lead away from the life your Maker wants
for you. Before using emotions as an habitual platform from which to
make decisions you might want to go inside to commune with
your Maker. Better things are in store for those who do.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 29 of 31
Dr. Rozen cited one study that showed people with
gingivitis and periodontitis have a 23% to 46% higher
mortality rate. Another study indicated that men under
age 50, who have advanced periodontal disease, are 2.6
times more likely to die prematurely and three times
more likely to die from heart disease than those who
have healthy teeth and gums. Both studies considered
other pertinent factors, such as smoking, alcohol, and
overeating. Studies have also shown that a bacterial
strain commonly found in tooth plaque has also been
found in the fatty deposits that clog arteries. Other
studies demonstrate that periodontal disease increases
the white blood cell count, an indicator that the
immune system is under increased stress.
Dr. Roizen concluded that dental disease and tooth loss
doesnt just make you look older, they actually make
you older. Indeed, periodontal disease can make our
Real Age more than 3.4 years older. Conversely, the
absence of periodontal diseases makes you 6.4 years
younger than the median person.
As a person concerned about your health it is your
responsibility to do all you can to not only extend
your life but to also improve its quality. This has to
extent to considering the effect of your oral health on
your overall health.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Billy Hendricks didn't quite know how to react. His
emotions were having his heart do flip flops, yet he knew
this statement was not given as a compliment. These people
were not given to complimenting one another, or anyone. They
confined their conversation to facts as they saw them.
"Thank you, sir. There are many in this village who will
become elder after you leave us. They will do fine."
"Yes, Billy, but it will be you behind them, guiding
them, until the generations have all come into your higher
law."
"I will most certainly do my best, Sir. I suspect that
will not take too long, if the village is prone to voting in
a headman who lives by higher law. That will come to pass
within a generation, I believe."
"I think you are right. It is still good you came,
Billy."
"I wasn't trying to sidestep responsibility. I was only
observing that the children are taking to this knowledge
like the dust takes on water. They are a fine group of kids
and they are progressing well."
"Are you ready for your wedding?"
"I guess I am as ready as I'll ever be. How does a man
get ready for his wedding?"
"I know. It seems to be an affair for the ladies doesn't
it. They don't even know you are around. Everybody is so
busy they have no time to talk. That's okay, Billy. I am
sure you can find many things to do. Your wedding has
galvanized this village into one single purpose and that is
a good one. At least we aren't focused on overthrowing a
government someplace. This is good activity and it is for
you and Sonora, Billy. They feel you have done much for them
and this is an attempt to pay you back."
"Old One, there will be many guests arrive soon. Will
the village be all right with that?"
"They will. They realize that all your guests live by
higher law. Because of your work they are no longer
threatened by that. Now they look forward to your guests
coming. I think they will want to talk with all of them. You
have turned these people into minds hungry for knowledge,
Billy. They will ask many questions."
"That would be terrific. Old One, there is my beloved,
going to the well. May I leave you and go to her?"
"Yes. Go with speed."
Billy rose and proceeded to the well where he came up
behind Sonora, and tickled her ribs.
Sonora jumped and it was all she could do to hang on to
the rope at the end of which was a bucket with water in it.
"Oh, Billy, you surprised me. Where did you come from?"
"I was sitting over there talking with the Old One."
Sonora looked and the Old One had a big smile on his
face. He knew what these young lovers were going through. He
was aware of their pledge to each other they would refrain
from sexual activity until after marriage. He could tell
that because their actions were not at all similar to others
in the village who were going to wed. The sexual practices
of others were considerably different. These two somehow
carried themselves with an honor and respect for each other
that was different. The Old One correctly concluded they
were not practicing sex until after marriage. He smiled.
Notice the name, the Old One, is used as both a title
and a name. It is a mark of honor that he is singularly
referred to in this manner. His actual name is no longer
important, but his role as the senior village elder is. He
prefers the present method in which people speak of him or
refer to him.
Billy took the rope from Sonora and hauled up the water
then poured it into her bucket. Then he returned the well
bucket to where it was normally kept and took up the bucket
full of water. At the same instant he leaned over and gave
Sonora a kiss right on the lips. In so doing he lost his
balance a little and spilled some of the very cool water. It
landed on Sonora's feet and she jumped in shock.
"Boy, you're sure gaining points this morning aren't
you. First you tickle me now you spill water all over my
feet. I suppose you want me to love you anyway? Do you mind
if I question what kind of a clumsy oaf I might be
marrying?" She laughed and ran a little ahead of Billy so he
couldn't do something to her.
Billy laughed. My, he loved this woman. She was kind,
caring and compassionate. It was plain she would do anything
for him. She loved to tease him just as much as Billy liked
to tease her. The pair of them were always at it.
She waited for him, still laughing. Billy had a sparkle
in his eyes. He was happy she felt free to tease him and
make fun of him. It meant she had no fears in or about the
relationship. It meant she felt equal and sharing. It meant
she felt she was permitted a level of confidence equal to
his and that she could communicate with him on all issues.
That is what Billy wanted, an independent woman capable of
looking after herself, but desirous of sharing her life with
him. He knew he was neither the "boss" nor "subservient". He
knew he would gladly be her servant at any time. Likewise,
Sonora felt the same.
Billy had studied long and hard in his private moments,
on this matter. He knew they were emotionally involved now
but when that wore off how would they get along? He knew
Sonora's interests toward him would change when she had
children. How would he react? He thought all these things
through because he wanted to have a continually smooth and
happy relationship in which to bring up children. He was
wholly and willingly prepared to give up his ego in favor of
her happiness. Living by higher law created the need for
that anyway. That is what is meant when one is told to give
up their life in order to gain life. The paradox centers
around letting go of your ego in favor of clear headed
unemotional thinking, plus having a deep understanding of
the laws of one's Maker.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Nemesis: Why do we call something that pursues a man
relentlessly his "nemesis"?
Because in Greek mythology "Nemesis" was an avenging goddess
who saw to it that people were punished for their misdeeds.
In Greek nemesis really means "remorse".

HA! HA! HA!
When we put our house up for sale, I stressed emphatically
that my sons make their beds each morning. I left for work
before they left for school, and I wanted to be sure that
the house looked presentable when the agent showed it to
prospective buyers.
I was surprised and impressed that my 15-year-old son's bed
was perfectly made each day. One night when I went into his
room, I discovered his secret.
He was fast asleep on the floor in his sleeping bag.
