TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What was the first toy ever advertised on television?

When was the croissant invented?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What was the original name of the game we now know as
"pick-up sticks"?

North American settlers played a game called "jackstraws"
that involved literally picking up pieces of straw or wood
splinters. The game became especially popular in the early
eighteenth century, when ivory or bone sticks were used
instead. Players tossed the sticks onto a smooth surface and
challenged each other to pick up a designated color without
disturbing the sticks of other colors. Today's "pick-up
sticks" are usually made of colored wood or plastic.

Who invented the "Slinky"?

The "Slinky," that amazing metal toy that performs flip-flop
feats, was invented in 1945 by Richard James, who was trying
to make a torsion spring to support heavy, fragile objects
for the US Army. Gimbels in Philadelphia introduced the toy
during the holiday season of 1946. Its entire stock sold out
in less than 90 minutes.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Guilt Can Force The Wrong Conclusion!

Late one Saturday evening, I was awakened by the ringing of
my phone.

In a sleepy grumpy voice I said hello. The party on the
other end of the line paused for a moment before rushing
breathlessly into a lengthy speech.

"Mom, this is Susan and I'm sorry I woke you up, but I had
to call because I'm going to be a little late getting home.
See, Dad's car has a flat but it's not my fault. Honest! I
don't know what happened. The tire just went flat while we
were inside the theater. Please don't be mad, okay?"

Since I don't have any daughters, I knew the person had
dialed my number by mistake.

"I'm sorry dear," I replied, "but you've reached the wrong
number. I don't have a daughter named Susan."

"Wow, Mom," the young woman's voice replied,

"I didn't think you'd be this mad."

Well I've been there, bought the T-shirt. Even if the tire
was flat the youngster was speaking with who she thought was
her Mother, with a guilty tone or feeling.

If the event was legitimate she still responded as guilty,
and that guilty conscience had her so she was not listening
to the voice. She had pronounced punishment on herself
because that is what she was looking for.

That is the way with all of us when we do things against our
own conscience. The moment we feel those pangs of guilt is
the moment we begin to look for punishment for ourselves.

That is why it is so important for us to seek truth. The
more we do, the more we learn and soon we become strong in
knowledge, if not with real power.

The more guilt, the greater the likelihood we will interpret
situations incorrectly. It comes from looking through
glasses of guilt, rather than those clean, crisp, clear
glasses of brilliant truth and confidence.

It is likely all who read this know this truth from
childhood. Yet some fail to learn its lesson. They continue
to practice these things that sponsor guilt and the
consequent result is less, far less than what one wants, for
it is then one is looking for punishment to once more
cleanse the sense of guilt.

The circle becomes a pattern. A pattern becomes a habit. A
habit becomes a life, and the life is one of repeated guilt
and suffering.

The answer then is to live within the bounds of your
conscience and strive to broaden the bounds thereof so you
can do all you need to do in good conscience.

Ignorance is no excuse under the laws of your Maker any more
than they are under the laws of man. The laws exist. If you learn them
and use them to your advantage you prosper. If you decline and
continue to conduct your life as if they do not exist then it is an
absolute certainty you will do less, have less and be less than your
peak.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 30 of 31

Conclusions The long-held belief that dental disease is
a localized, minor disease that only affects the teeth
and gums, has not withstood the test of time. Dental
disease, and other issues related to the mouth, can and
do contribute to serious health problems. They can also
interfere with successful medical treatment and healing
and can actually shorten life expectancy.

I believe that the evidence supporting the role of
dental disease in systemic diseases is conclusive. As a
patient, you cannot afford to overlook this
relationship when seeking treatment for any disease or
for attempting to extend life expectancy and improve
the quality of your life. If you suffer from any of the
symptoms or diseases referred to in this chapter, you
must determine if periodontal disease, amalgam
fillings, or another oral issue could be contributing
to its cause or severity. Certainly, you want to ensure
that you have at least eliminated dental disease or
mercury poisoning as a possible cause of, or
contributor to, your existing health problems.

Neglecting the issue of dental health, in my opinion,
jeopardizes the success of treatment and could lead to
disappointing outcomes. It could also result in great
frustration for you and your health practitioner.

Solutions Discussing problems without offering
solutions does not have much value. Therefore, I will
offer some solutions to help you address the problems
of dental disease and its effects on overall health.

I am not suggesting that you become a dentist yet, it
is vitally important to address the issue of oral
health, especially since it could affect the success of
any treatment you may now be undergoing.

Everyone understands that successful treatment hinges
on making an accurate diagnosis. In order to make a
truly ‘whole body’ diagnosis you, your dentist and your
health professional, must know the state of your oral
health.

My suggestion is that you make an appointment with your
dentist to determine the following:

1. Your total periodontal health;
2. Whether or not you have any infected root canals;
3. The condition of any extraction sites;
4. Whether or not you have, or have had, amalgam
fillings, including how many;
5. Whether or not you have been examined for other
diseases whose early signs and symptoms are found in
the oral cavity.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to
http://www.the-pebble.com OR order yours from
your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

The pair of them sauntered back to Sonora's place
casually chatting along the way about nothing in particular.
You know how young lovers are. They can talk all day long
about nothing, pass the day together and it goes by so fast
one wonders where it went. They think they have solved the
problems of the world and that all is well. It is such a
euphoric and wonderful state to be in.

That is what Billy and Sonora were doing. Time had no
meaning or purpose to them. They existed in a bubble of
their own and, as far as they were concerned it could go on
forever. Forever, that is until it was interrupted by Sam
Henry.

"Hello, you two. Are you in euphoria land again?" Sam
laughed. He, too, was a teaser. He loved the pair of them
and as they approached Kenyata's and Mombudo's fire circle
it was clear they were "spaced" out.

"Hello, Mr. Sam." Sonora ran over to him and gave him a
hug. "What are you doing here?"

"Hello, Sam." Billy was a little more subtle, a little
more "manly".

"Hi Billy. It is good to see you, son. I hope and trust
all is well and this little vixen here isn't giving you a
hard time."

Sonora laughed and poked Sam in the ribs. "Oh, you men
are all alike. Does he get that from you, Mr. Sam? He's
always teasing me."

"Now, Sonora, don't get too haughty. It seems to me you
can hand it out with the best of them. She's just vying for
your attention, Sam. She's been telling me I'm an old man,
that I'm clumsy and that I'm not making any points with her
this day. She's a wiley one, Sam. Look out for her."

"You see, Mr. Sam, this is what I'm planning on
marrying. I'm starting to have second thoughts. I think I'm
going to get into a situation where he will have no mercy
and tease me all the time." Sonora was laughing with the
rest of them.

"I was just on a journey to help out in a landslide
situation. It is all well now, but before I went home I
thought I would drop in to see how you folks were doing. I
imagine you are all busy."

Sam had been sitting at the fire circle with Mombudo and
Kenyata for a while. He arrived just as Sonora was on her
way to get water. She had not seen him arrive. Billy and
Sonora had taken maybe 30 minutes getting water.

"It's a ladies thing Mr. Sam. The men have nothing to do
but run errands once in a while." Mombudo had spoken. "I
notice this young man seems lost in space somewhere. They
are barely polite to him in the village and no one wants him
to do anything. He closed down the school for a month or
more until he and Sonora return from their alone time, so
now he wanders like a lost soul through the village. It is
as if he were a ghost."

They all laughed. Billy was the butt end of his joke.
Yet it was true. That is almost how Billy felt.

"The entire village is busy, Sam. This is a big event
for them. They have all learned well at our school and it is
as if they have been released from bondage. Fear and
ignorance have kept these people in bondage for a long
time,. They now see they, too, are children of God and they,
too, can seek and find their Maker. It is quite a revelation
to see, Sam. They are wonderful people and have come alive
with this wedding. The Old One says they are doing it for
me, but the real truth is they have found themselves and are
doing it for themselves. I am just the excuse."

"Sure you are, Billy. Isn't it wonderful. I get such a
joy out watching people grow. Nothing pleases me more. So,
the wedding is in a few days is it?"

"You bet, Sam. I was going to come and get you and Mom
in a couple days. And I was going to round up the whole gang
then, too. I do hope everyone is coming."

"Billy, they wouldn't miss it for any reason. What about
your own parents and family, Billy?"

"I thought about that Sam. Had it not been for you and
your family I would have been a juvenile delinquent likely
now sitting in jail someplace. They have no concern about
me, Sam. I have decided to leave them out of this. I will
see them later. You know the kind of thinking that comes out
of a beer bottle. I will have to have Sonora prepared for
such a meeting."

"I see. As you wish, Billy. I see nothing that would
cause you a problem there. So I'll see you in a couple days,
back home?"

"You bet. Please tell everyone I'll be there, we'll be
there," he put his arm around Sonora as he spoke. "We want
to gather everyone up and bring them back here. Did you see
the guest village we set up for everyone?"

"Yes. Mombudo showed me. He said it was you and your
students set it up. Good work."

"I sure hope all our guests are up to being questioned.
I suspect these villagers will be on their cases from the
moment each arrives. They are hungry for knowledge, Sam.
They have had a taste of higher law and they want to live
that way."

As they were speaking they could see the Old One coming.
He was walking upright, with his staff. He was now a frail
man, but wiry and a mental giant among these people.

Sam, Mombudo and the others rose to greet him.

"I knew Mr. Sam was with us. I wanted to come and say
hello. It is a long time since I saw you."

"Yes, Old One. I have stopped in to see this young
sprout is behaving himself and carrying himself like a son
of mine. I trust that is so?"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

On the Cuff: Why do we say that something purchases and
charged is put "on the cuff"?

Because it was once the custom of waiters in public houses
to keep a record of what was ordered on the cuffs of their
shirts. for this reason, a diner who wished to have his meal
charged would jocularly suggest that the amount due be put
"on the cuff" also.

HA! HA! HA!

Two overweight middle-aged women are on their daily exercise
stroll. They were talking about how hard it is to lose
weight as one gets older, something with which all you
youths must deal eventually.

One woman complained that she remained an 'apple-shape' and
the other said that no matter how much she exercised, there
was too much poundage on her backside and thighs. It almost
seemed like it was there to stay.

Her buddy agreed, saying, "It's true. The lard works in
mysterious ways."
