What exactly is Spam and where did the name come from?

Sea rise could be 'catastrophic'

Earth could be headed for catastrophic sea level rise in the
next few centuries if greenhouse gases continue to rise at
present rates, experts say.
A study in the US journal Science suggests a threshold
triggering a rise in sea level of several metres could be
reached before the end of the century.
Scientists used an ancient period of warming to predict
future changes.
Greenland could be as warm by 2100 as it was 130,000 years
ago, when melting ice raised sea levels by 3-4m.
The implication is that Greenland would - eventually - melt
by as much in response to present warming.
The findings come from two studies published in Science by
Dr Jonathan Overpeck, of the University of Arizona in
Tucson, and colleagues.
Their computer models show that, in addition to widespread
melting of the Greenland ice sheet, this rate of warming
could also lead to the collapse of about half of the West
Antarctic ice sheet in 500 years.
Past lessons
Dr Overpeck's team used computer models to simulate the
climate 130,000 years ago. Because Earth was tilted slightly
more than today on its axis, more solar radiation hit the
northern latitudes, driving warming there.
The researchers found that melting of the Greenland ice
sheet could have raised sea levels by 2-3.5m. But they also
concluded that the rest could have come from the West
Antarctic ice sheet.
It was not as warm here, but much of the ice sheet remains
below sea level. This, they believe, allowed warming ocean
waters along with rising sea levels to destabilise it.
"The simulated climate warming agreed well with the observed
climate warming," Dr Overpeck told the BBC News website.
"So, we had a firm estimate of how much warmth was necessary
to cause that much sea level rise."
The researchers then compared this with simulations of
future warming to learn how much sea level rise would be
expected in future.
They estimate peak rates of sea level rise exceeding 1m per
century.
'Danger zone'
"These processes of rapid ice sheet retreat are already
happening. It just takes a while to get metres of sea level
rise. But our study says that if we warm the Earth by more
than two times the equivalent of pre-industrial carbon
dioxide levels, we could be entering the danger zone," said
Dr Overpeck.
"The ice sheet retreat and sea level rise on the order of
what happened 130,000 years ago is inevitable and
irreversible."
Geoscientist Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University,
who is not an author on the new paper, told Science:
"Palaeoclimate always has a large amount of uncertainty,
[but] we should take this as a serious warning sign. You
could lock in a dangerous warming during this century."
Other work in the journal Science shows "earthquakes" caused
by sudden movement of Greenland's glaciers are rising.
Some of Greenland's glaciers, which are as large as
Manhattan and as tall as the Empire State Building, can move
10m in less than a minute, according to Harvard University
scientists. This jolt is sufficient to generate seismic
waves.
Not only has the frequency of these events increased, but
they appear to occur more frequently in late summer than
other parts of the year.
When water accumulates at a glacier's base, it acts as a
lubricant causing large blocks to lurch down valleys.
"Greenland's glaciers deliver large quantities of fresh
water to the oceans, so the implications for climate change
are serious. We believe further warming of the climate is
likely to accelerate the behaviour we've documented," said
co-author Meredith Nettles at the Lamont-Doherty Earth
Observatory in New York, US.

The information that you are going to read here is strictly
educational and not intended as medical advice, but it is
meant for you to think about other possible ways to consider
chronic health conditions. Here is scientific support for
the use of supplements. It helped us to understand why our
Meniere’s sufferers got better. It helped us to see the
connections between the possible causes of their symptoms,
and what they could now do about their vertigo, dizziness,
hearing problems and lack of a productive and reasonable
life. This is not about treating or diagnosing a health
condition. For that please, consult your health care
professional.
In June 2002, the American Medical Association Journal
(JAMA) published two articles that just blew me away! They
provided the scientific evidence for the results we were
witnessing! It explained things that I suspected were
happening. Let me introduce you to this information or maybe
re-introduce you. First I want explain what this is all
about. Next I will give you a resource so you can find a
supplement to meet these recommendations. Or you can compare
your own ideas about supplementation. Then I want to try and
help you connect this to what might be already going on in
your own life. I share some word pictures and links.
Hopefully, that will help you to understand this concept and
these recommendations a bit better. Lastly I want you to
understand why this could be so important for you.
These articles mentioned “some chronic disease”, and I will
expand on that. But I wanted to share this idea with you as
it has changed my entire way of looking at chronic diseases.
I now believe people do not have to remain stuck in an
“illness mode”. Happily, from my own experience with
Meniere’s, I was seeing people actually “living out” what
the recommendations suggested! Here we now had the required
scientific grounding I longed for! So I thought it would be
helpful to share my thoughts and questions. One of the major
challenges, of course, is to find what supplements qualify
for this set of parameters. Let’s go to the abstract links
first. Then I am also going to share with you where you can
find information to help you choose possible supplements:
what to look for and how to access the manufacturer. And
lastly, I want to link this to two articles you may already
have read: the immune system and the inflammatory process.
Both are crucial for your knowledge if you want to be in
control of your own health.

4Now for the story
"Mom, Dad, are we needed here? I mean is there any
reason why Billy and I can't leave early to go get our
guests?"
"I don't see any problem with that, honey. This sitting
and waiting is a tough one isn't it?"
"Well, Mom, I can take it but this man of mine is sure
getting jumpy." Sonora laughed, knowing she was getting at
Billy once more.
"Now listen to that, Mom. What kind of a daughter did
you raise, anyway? She's done nothing but tease me all day."
Kenyata and Mombudo looked at one another and smirked.
They loved that the kids teased each other. They loved even
more that it was always done with love and kindness. That
made it fun for everyone.
"Actually, Mom," said Billy, "Sonora's right. If we
aren't needed maybe we can get away and return with our
guests in a couple days. If you need us you can call us.
We'll return right away."
"No, you're not needed. Go. Get out of here. You'll
likely just get in my way anyway."
Life was good here. There was always this warm, friendly
jovial way of things. No one took things too serious.
"We'll be off then. Thanks, we'll see you in a couple
days."
With that Billy looked at Sonora and took her hand. They
were instantly over at the orphanage in China. They wanted
to spend some more time with Reno and Amenti and Tom and
Tlang. Both couples lived and worked at the orphanage.
"Hi, you guys. How is everyone here today?"
"Oh, hi, Billy, Sonora. How are you guys. More
important, what are you doing here? Aren't you getting
married in a couple days? You're supposed to be at home
getting things all ready." Tom winked at Billy when he said
this.
"Hi, brother. Good to see you, too." Billy walked over
to Tom and the pair hugged. They hadn't seen one another for
quite a while.
Tlang and Sonora hugged too, and then they switched and
hugged each other's counterpart.
"Where's Amenti and Reno?"
"Oh, they're around here somewhere. It's just about time
to get the noon meal so I think they'll show up. Oh, there
they are now." Tom pointed to Amenti and Reno.
"Hi, you guys. Gee it's good to see you."
Billy and Sonora went to give and receive hugs.
"So what are you two doing here?"
"Well, our wedding is in a couple days so we thought we
would come visit. We really wanted to see if you could get a
whole day off so we could all spend it together, like we did
on the Serengeti that time, remember?"
"Yeah. Tlang and I think of it often. How about it
Amenti? Reno?"
"I think that can be arranged. Why don't we go up onto
the steppes. We don't have the game there like on the
Serengeti, but we sure do have wide open spaces with only
the wind."
"You know, I haven't been there. I remember Mrs. Wiley
and Mrs. Miles telling us about it. I thought then I'd like
to go there. Let's do it. That okay with you Sonora?"
They chatted amongst themselves a little longer and
decided that was the thing to do. Amenti and Reno and Tom
and Tlang went and told others they were going to be away
for this night and the whole day tomorrow. Maria was more
than capable of keeping things in order. The kids, but for a
few, were all living by higher law.
The couples were instantly on the steppes in
northeastern China or southeastern Siberia. It was a vast,
unforested area. It was grassland and the grasses would blow
in the wind giving a wave appearance.
The wind was constant here. There were no barriers, like
towns or villages, trees, mountains or big hills. As a
result the wind offered no gusts, just steady blowing. It
was a rare day when the wind did not blow some.
The couples landed in what might be thought of as the
center of the area. There were no people around, although
there were signs horses had travelled through here in the
last while. One might expect that. This was the land of the
Mongols. Their main method of transportation was the horse.
The group sat down, created an environmental envelope
around themselves and a fire around which they sat, and
began to talk.
That was the whole purpose of the visit. They had such a
wonderful time on the Serengeti they just wanted to visit.
They had much in common and could talk all day long without
going anywhere or doing anything.
And that is pretty much what they did. The night was
coming upon them. The fire offered them warmth and light and
they had each other. They talked long into the night, then,
finally, simply lay down on the ground where they were, and
slept.
There was something special about sleeping on the
ground. Whether it was being in touch with the magnetic
forces given up by Mother earth, or a spiritual connection,
they didn't think about it. They only knew they enjoyed
sleeping directly on the earth. No one awoke with sore
backs, necks, knees, hips or elbows. Somehow they were part
of the earth they slept on and it was terrific.
They each awakened to the brightness of the morning sun.
It was early and the wind had not yet gotten out of bed, so
it was calm and silent. No one spoke, but enjoyed the quiet.
This had to be God's land. In the silence it was beautiful.
