TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How does a flamingo eat algae?

Why are plastic flamingos so popular as lawn ornaments?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is the sleeping sickness?

Sleeping sickness, or encephalitis lethargica, was a strange
disease that appeared in Europe suddenly in 1915.  By 1918,
the disease, which took many forms, had spread throughout
the world. In some cases, victims fell into a coma and never
woke up. Others died from days and days of NOT being able to
sleep at all. The epidemic, which is estimated to have
affected five million people, vanished mysteriously in 1927.
Survivors didn't fare well. The long-term effects of the
sleeping sickness, which had developed into a form of
Parkinson's disease, had turned many patients into
motionless "statues." In March 1969, neurologist Oliver
Sacks began to prescribe L-dopa, a drug used to treat
Parkinson's disease, to sleeping sickness patients. The
effect was extraordinary. Many began to "wake up" and were
suddenly, after decades of not moving, able to walk and talk
and think. Some patients believed they were still in the
1920s! Sadly, though, many patients on L-dopa began to
suffer from involuntary movements, bizarre motions and
notions, and other serious symptoms.

Why are flamingos pink?

Flamingos are pink thanks to their diet, which is high in
carotene, a natural food color found in carrots. The birds
don't dine on carrots (though the Philadelphia Zoo DOES feed
them carrot juice). They get their carotene from mollusks,
crustaceans, and certain kinds of algae. Flamingo babies are
born covered with white down, which turns gray at
approximately three weeks. The pinkish coloration takes one
or two years to develop. The intensity of the pink also
varies according to species. Some flamingo species are so
light that they appear almost white.

Here's To Think On - - - with Ken Darby
-----------------

Were You Sincere In The First Place?

Smith goes to see his supervisor in the front office.
"Boss," he says, "we're doing some heavy house-cleaning at
home tomorrow, and my wife needs me to help with the attic
and the garage, moving and hauling stuff."

"We're short-handed, Smith," the boss replies. "I can't give
you the day off."

"Thanks, boss," says Smith, "I knew I could count on you!"

It seems the guy in the joke had an agenda other than what
he was telling his wife.

I wonder how many of us do this, because we want more
computer time, or because we think what we are doing is more
important than what a loved one asks us to do.

Are you guilty of this in any part of your life?

The lessons I have learned as life went on are that there is
no life where there isn't something to do you don't want to
do. There is no job that doesn't have some aspects that are
undesirable and there are thousands of people with whom you
will not see eye to eye, so to speak.

These are the things that make us grow. It is in the
overcoming of the lethargy within us that makes us grow and
expand to new frontiers.

If you have an agenda different than what you publicly state
you are only fooling yourself and it is yourself who will
pay the price.

Integrity calls you to be who you say you are. Practice that
to achieve great results. No hidden agendas. Shoot straight
and let others know the truth. Peace and power are the
result.

Don't go looking for excuses, or reasons to postpone or put
off a task that needs doing. I make it a practice to do
those things first. That way the stuff I don't want to do is
already done and the rest of the day is a treat.

Soon, however, more of that stuff will come your way. Good.
Get it done immediately. Procrastination can play havoc with
you life. Getting things done can send you rewards you were
not expecting. like raises, promotions, sales.

As with all of life the choices are yours but ask yourself . . .

Were You Sincere In The First Place?

“Vitamins For Chronic Disease Prevention In Adults”
(scientific review and clinical applications)
Two American Medical Association Journal (JAMA) Articles On
The Use Of Supplementation For Adults
PART 2 of 11

If you have optimum health, you shouldn’t have any health
issues, right? You probably wouldn’t need to consider
supplementation as your body tells, by its flawless
functioning, that everything is fine. The irony is that it
is precisely those healthy people, who do understand the
value of supplementation, are the ones who maintain….this
healthy state…by using supplements! So if you do have a
health issue, any sort outside the normal aging process,
then could you maybe not be offering your body optimum
nutrition? Therefore the AMA suggests “every adult should
take a multivitamin a day”.

In essence, the articles say that every adult should take a
multivitamin. What a suggestion to make in our drug-oriented
culture! The objective of the review was “to review the
clinically important vitamins with regard to their
biological effects, food sources, deficiency syndromes,
potential for toxicity, and the relationship to chronic
disease”. 1

The first article describes the scientific review and its
methodology, and provides related health articles. It shows
that there is a lot of action and research going on in this
arena. From the scientific review, they concluded (I quote)
“inadequate intake of several vitamins has been linked to
chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, cancer,
and osteoporosis. 1 (Scientific review)

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

4Now for the story

Like vultures sitting there with wings spread warming in
the morning sun, the three couples sat and absorbed the
day. They had nothing to do this day but enjoy it and each
other.

The sun sponsored feelings of joy, of expansiveness, of
being one with all. To sit there and absorb its rays on this
wide open landscape was something each of them would
remember.

Around ten in the morning Amenti spoke and broke the
spell. "Have you ever seen a day like this? It's
incredible."

Each of the others agreed.

They hadn't even eaten breakfast, they had been so
absorbed.

"What shall we do today, folks. Shall we just sit and
talk, go for a walk, manifest a ball and have a game, what?

"Amenti, how come you're so gung ho this morning? You
must have gotten up when the sun got up."

"Billy, you're just a lazy bones. Come on you guys,
let's go for a walk."

Slowly, even reluctantly at first, they each got up and
stretched a good long stretch. Turning around and looking,
all they could see was grassland.

In some places the grass was only up to maybe eight
inches. In other places it was shorter and stubby,
maybe four or six inches. The weather was cool and harsh
here and the grasses had to work hard to survive.

All six of them, in couples hand in hand, started off.
They didn't care what direction they were going, things were
the same in all directions.

A gentle breeze was now making itself felt. As the sun
warmed up the earth the breezed became stronger.
The couples walked on just talking amongst themselves,
small talk mostly. They weren't trying to make any major
points, they were more into just enjoying each other and
this place.

The stopped and looked back. Their trail was marked as
if by an indelible pencil. Where they had walked they had
bent the grasses and it left a clear trail right to them.
The sight was an interesting one. The trail began from
nowhere and was leading nowhere. There was no explanation as
to how people got to the beginning, no trial leading up to
the fire circle.

An inexperienced tracker would well be able to tell
which way the people walked but would sure be puzzled as to
how anyone got to where the trail began.

The couples walked on, having no particular mission in
mind. They just walked and talked for a couple hours. Every
once in a while they would spot a stone and give it a kick.
On these walks it wasn't the guys in one group and the gals
in another. They went everywhere as couples.

This might be termed the young lovers group. Each was
desperately in love with their mate and each of them was
battling their desires to embrace sexually.

Sharing like this with others in the same condition
somehow made the intenseness of their feeling for their
mates bearable. Each knew they would have their time.

"Billy, Sonora, you guys excited about the wedding?"

"Tlang, yes. But it's a double edged sword. We so much
want to be together, as you and Tom know, but then we have
built it up in our minds so much it is a major step and one
of much responsibility, so it's scary. I guess that's the
kind of feelings one gets when, finally, what you have
wanted so deeply is going to happen. Have you guys, all of
you, made plans to marry?"

"Of course, Billy. You two just beat us to it. We are
all waiting until your wedding is over and then we shall
each marry. Hey! Amenti, Reno. How about a double wedding?
After we get back from Billy's and Sonora's wedding how
about setting up a wedding where both couples get married at
once? That would be neat."

"Tom, that's a terrific idea." Tlang was excited.

That concept threw a whole new level of enthusiasm and
excitement into their conversations. It soon became apparent
that is what they were going to do. It was so obvious. Here
Amenti, Reno, Tlang and Tom were all living at the same
place and that was far away from family or their homes, why
not have one big wedding at the orphanage and have everyone
come. In this case that meant all the kids from the
orphanage in Matto Grosso, too. They were now spread out all
over the world doing the work. A message would have to be
sent out to all of them.

From that moment, the group lost complete track of time.
The whole concept was exciting and involved all of them. The
trail was no longer straight. It meandered across the plain
like a wandering river. They didn't care where they were
going. Their legs just moved as if they were automatons. It
was their heads that were together and their feet merely
went any direction they happened to fall.

"You guys want something to eat?" Sonora found she was
getting hungry and thought the others might be, too.

"Yeah. Let's sit and munch on something. Here, over
here." Amenti had picked the south facing slope of a small
undulation in the earth's surface.

They all sat in a row facing the sun. If this were the
plant world they would have been a row of tomatoes seeking
out the life giving rays of the sun for as much time as they
could.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Palace: Where did we get the word "palace"?

From Rome - for the word originally meant a dwelling on the
"Palatine" Hill in rome. Augustus built his home there -
and so did Tiberius and Nero.

HA! HA! HA!

Because of a minor infraction, a shipmate of mine aboard the
USS Reeves, bound for Japan, was busted one rank, fined and
given extra duty for three weeks. Looking forward to
celebrating his 21st birthday on July 22, he consoled
himself every night during his extra duty by reciting, "They
can bust me, they can fine me -- but they can't take away my
birthday." As July 22 approached, his excitement increased.
When he went to bed on July 21, he happily repeated,

"They can bust me, they can fine me -- but they can't take
away my birthday."

The next morning, he found out that the ship had crossed the
international date line -- and it was July 23.
