TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is a group of flamingos called?

What is a chinook?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How does a flamingo eat algae?

Flamingos have a method of feeding that is similar to that
of baleen whales and unique in the bird world. The flamingo
takes in food and water at the same time and then sorts out
the food and expels the water through a comb-like structure
called a lamallae.

Why are plastic flamingos so popular as lawn ornaments?

Believe it or not, the decorative flamingo was once a sign
of wealth. In the 1920s, only the wealthy could winter in
Florida, where flamingos lived. So the bird became
associated with privilege. In the 1950s, an art student
named Don Featherstone developed the pink plastic flamingo
lawn ornament and the middle class, ever eager to embrace
symbols of wealth, bought it up in droves.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™ - - - with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
-----------------

What Do You Mean "I'm Angry"?

When you reach your boiling point, what do you do with the
steam? This makes all the difference in your relationships
at home, at work, and, with yourself.

Do you know when you are angry? Many folks don't. Not only
are they not aware they are angry, they are not aware how
they come across to others when they are angry. This is a
big problem...for everyone else. You would be surprised how
few folks actually understand how they behave or how other
folks see them. Unfortunately, they are not sensitive to
their own attitudes, feelings emotions, and communication
style.

Do you have high self-awareness? Do you have an accurate
picture of your behavior, tone of voice, facial expressions?
If you are unsure, sit down with the person you most trust
and ask them to paint an honest picture for you. Yes, that
may be difficult to ask, and to hear. It must be done,
though, if you want to improve your relationships.

I recently heard a story about a manager whose employee
brought her a requested proposal for a new office system.
After reading the proposal briefly, the manager went up one
side of the employee and down the other. Using language
such as "This is absurd." "What were you thinking?" "How
long have you been with us?" "You're making me wonder why I
ever hired you." All this was delivered from a standing
position in a loud voice with harsh eye contact. The
employee, completely taken aback and intimidated, went back
to her cubicle furious. Her colleague asked her about the
meeting and she described the reception. Soon, the story
made the rounds of the department.

The next week, the manager met a colleague who said to her,
"Wow! You were really hard on Michelle. Are you planning on
letting her go?"

The manager was stunned. "Why would you ever think that?
She's important to our operation." As they discussed the
incident, the manager realized that she had no perception of
the way she had delivered her blows to Michelle. She
thought she had been simply responding to the ideas brought
to her. No idea of the effect of her behavior on the
employee. This manager needs to increase her
self-awareness.

DO YOUR OWN WORK FIRST

Before you go telling others what they need to improve
within themselves, look in the mirror. What are you doing?
How are you delivering your messages? Is your communication
'clean'?

Begin with yourself. How do you express your anger? Do you
express your anger or does your steam escape in
inappropriate ways at the wrong people having been bottled
up for too long?

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS

You likely have heard the old story about the husband who
has been chewed out at work who comes home and yells at his
wife who screams at the kids who kick the dog. If the
husband had good communication and conflict management
skills, he would have handled the issue at work in the first
place, right?

If you feel intimidated, or you avoid conflict at all costs,
you need skills. Take a community college course and read
some books. Seek out good ideas to increase your
self-awareness and your skill set.

Conflict is not a four-letter word. It simply means to have
divergent ideas, needs, drives, wishes or demands. That's
OK but it is how we express those differences that takes the
toll. Learn to express them in ways others can hear. It
will build your self-confidence.

BEGIN SIMPLY

Pay attention to how you think, feel and respond in
different situations. Make a mental picture and rehearse
how you would like to respond. Use your new skill set.
Then, step out into the world.

Listen well when there is conflict. Look beneath the words
to the pain. For example, when someone is angry with you
because a piece of paper is missing, by listening carefully
you may realize what is underneath the anger. You might
then say, "I understand that not finding this piece of paper
right now might make you late for your meeting and you may
look inefficient." That's the pain. By giving it a name,
both you and the other person deepen the understanding of
the situation. When you get really good at this, you will
also deepen your relationships.

Taking the time to build your self-awareness and your skill
set is well worth the effort. Everyone in your life will
benefit. You will benefit most of all.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

“Vitamins For Chronic Disease Prevention In Adults”
(scientific review and clinical applications)
Two American Medical Association Journal (JAMA) Articles On
The Use Of Supplementation For Adults
PART 3 of 11

The second link is to the clinical application. From the
clinical review, they also concluded (I quote) ”most people
do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet
alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from
randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take
vitamin supplements.” 2 (Clinical applications)
http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/287/23/3127

Incidentally, if you have any serious interest in scientific
research and reviews, this provides a very good learning
opportunity in the mechanics of obtaining information. It
shows you how you can, as a guest, obtain an overview of
medical information that usually is only available to
doctors and other health professionals. Interesting
exercise.

Here we obviously meet a challenge. What supplements should
you eat? How do you find what your body is missing? Again,
this article makes it easier to find some answers and
direction. It suggests a “multivitamin”. Most commonly, that
term is meant to include both vitamins and minerals. Here
comes next huge challenge. If you stood in front of a
pharmacy or health food sore section, which contains all
sorts of “offerings” of vitamins and minerals, how do you
choose the one to match these criteria? How very
frustrating! How discouraging! In my community health
clinics I have often gone with people to show them just how
difficult it is to read the labels (tiny print for one
thing) and figure out what your body actually needs. Who
decides?

Here is one excellent resource. It is called The Comparative
Guide To Nutritional Supplements ISBN 0-9732538-0-0 by Lyle
MacWilliam. It’s really worth the investment of a few
dollars to help you sort through the confusion and the
individual elements (vitamins & minerals). This manual ranks
over 250 companies and over 500 products…I often do
comparisons for people who tell me they are on the best
quality supplements. Using this resource, I don’t need to
guess. I can give an immediate rating. I see a major
challenge for the ordinary person. How do you get answers to
questions such as “how much is seen as optimal and what kind
of product do I take to meet those recommendations?” “How
much leads me to toxicity? Who do I trust to ask? How can I
do more research? Once you have a tool like The Comparative
Guide, it helps you to make better choices. It guides you in
finding a supplement to meet these recommendations. Or you
can compare your own ideas about supplementation.

Keep these questions and thoughts in mind as you print off
the abstracts.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

4Now for the story

Whenever one was speaking the others leaned out their
heads to see. This would go back and forth for maybe an
hour. If one was invisible and floating above them, looking
down just observing, one would be amused at their movements.
If one could not hear any sound of the groups voices, it
would not be a far leap to witness their movements as one
would see movement in plants. Interesting how some
observations present images different than what is.

This group came from nowhere and were going nowhere.
They each knew the day was passing yet they had no
compulsion to return to the spot where their day began. So
when they had finished their bite to eat they simply rose
and began walking again. There was no message given amongst
them. It simply seemed the thing to do and they, as one,
rose and were walking once more.

They shared ideas of teaching kids higher law. Billy and
Sonora filled the group in on what was happening at their
place with the school. It was much similar to what the other
couples had experienced at the orphanage in China. Now,
however, courtesy of Sam Henry, most all the kids at the
orphanage were living by higher law. It made the work
much easier. The only kids at the orphanage now who did not
live by higher law were newcomers and they were becoming
absorbed into the group such that they, too, were soaking up
the ways of higher law.

The day marched on in its relentless pattern. Before the
group knew it the sun was setting and it was becoming dark.
They knew this day was drawing to a close.

They decided to sit around one more fire and take even
up to the last second with each other. They had enjoyed this
day together and didn't want it to come to an end.

The couples would spend as much time around this fire as
they could, but instead of sleeping here tonight they would
return to the orphanage. Their time together would be over.

The following morning Billy and Sonora awoke to the
noise of the kids from the orphanage. It sounded much like
being at home.

They got up and went looking for Amenti and Reno and Tom
and Tlang.

That search was not hard. Each of the others was already
sitting around the morning fire having a bite to eat and
still talking about the idea of a double wedding. They were
animated even this early in the morning.

Billy and Sonora sat down and had a bite to eat. They
listened and participated in the conversation but knew they
would have to leave soon.

"Guys, I think we'll be on our way. Make sure you all
come day after tomorrow. We'll be waiting for you. Also,
bring the kids. Where are Maria and Riata?"

"They are over in the gully with some of the kids."
Tlang pointed the way.

"Okay guys. See you in a couple days. Thanks for the
good time."

They all said their good-byes and Billy and Sonora
walked over to the gully behind the orphanage.

There they spoke with Riata and with Maria, inviting
them and the kids to the wedding. They, too, promised to be
in Africa two days from now.

With that Billy took Sonora's hand and they vanished,
only to reappear in the Henry kitchen in Pinehill.

"Hello you two! How are you today? A little early aren't
you?" Sam was the first to spot Billy and Sonora and was
already chiding them. The time here was late in the evening
and the Henrys were sitting down at the table just talking
over their day, as was their custom.

"We just spent a wonderful day with Amenti and Reno, and
Tom and Tlang. We sure enjoy each other. We left home
because there wasn't much for us to do. The whole village is
getting ready for the wedding and they have no time for us."

The bunch of them laughed.

"I know the feeling. This is about you two but they have
no time for you now. That's okay. This will be over soon.
Are you here to get us already?"

"No, Mom, Dad. We know we're early. We can gather
everyone up tomorrow and head out then."

"Like a coffee, you two?" Alewka, always the hostess,
went to get the coffee.

"It looks like you guys are getting ready for bed.
Sonora and I just got up. We were at the orphanage in China.
Those folks there are all coming, even the kids."

"Are you two sure the village knows how many people are
going to be dropping in on them?"

"No, I don't think they have a clue, but that doesn't
matter, Dad. When we all live by higher law we will be a
help to the village, not a burden."

"That's true but it might be a little overwhelming."

"I don't think so Dad. The whole village is keen on
learning higher law. I think we are all going to be
questioned and cornered. This way we will have two or three
people for every villager. They will have a good chance to
talk."

"I guess. Everything all works out, doesn't it. How
about you two? Are you ready for the big event?"

"As ready as we will ever be."

"Good. How are Tom and Tlang?"

"They're fine, Dad. I think they have a surprise for the
pair of you though. I won't tell you. You'll have to wait
until at least tomorrow, maybe the day after. But you'll
like it."

Queer Card: What is the reason a queer person is called a
"queer card"?

In a game of bridge, whist, or the like, if your partner
makes an unusual lead, the card played is a "queer" card -
and he's a "queer card" for having led it. A person is
called a "card" by a shortening of the term.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it
is the journey that matters in the end." -- Ursula Le
Guin

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Jake, the rancher, went one day to fix a distant fence.
The wind was cold and gusty and the clouds rolled, gray and dense.
As he pounded the last staples in and gathered tools to go,
The temperature had fallen and the snow began to blow.

When he finally reached his pickup, he felt a heavy heart,
From the sound of that ignition, he knew it wouldn't start.
So Jake did what most of us would do, if we'd have been there.
He humbly bowed his balding head and sent aloft a prayer.

As he turned the key for the last time, he softly cursed his luck.
They found him three days later, frozen stiff in that old truck.
Now Jake had been around in life, and done his share of roamin'.
But when he saw Heaven, he was shocked-it looked just like Wyomin'.

Of all the saints in Heaven, his favorite was St. Peter.
[Now, this line, it ain't needed but it helps with rhyme and meter.]
So they set and talked a spell or two, or maybe it was three,
Nobody was keepin' score---in Heaven time is free.

"I've always heard," Jake said to Pete, "that God will answer prayer,
But one time I asked for help, and, well He just plain wasn't there.
Does God answer prayers of some, and ignores the prayers of others?
That don't seem exactly square-I know all men are brothers.

Or does he randomly reply, without good rhyme or reason?
Maybe, it's the time of day, the weather or the season.
Now I just ain't trying to act smart, it's just the way I feel,
And I was wonderin', could you tell me-what the heck's the deal?"

Peter listened very patiently and when Jake was done,
There were smiles of recognition, and he said, "So, you're the one!
That day your truck wouldn't start, and you sent your prayer a flying,
You gave us all a real bad time, with hundreds of us a trying.

A thousand angels rushed to check the status of your file,
But you know,Jake - - - we hadn't heard from you in quite a while.
And though all prayers are answered, and God ain't got no quota,
He didn't recognize your voice, and started a truck in South Dakota.
