What, then, is a mule?
A mule is the domesticated, hybrid offspring of a mare
(female horse) and a jackass (male donkey). The offspring of
a male horse (stallion) and a female ass (jenny) is called a
"hinny." Mules will often grow to a size larger than either
parent, and they live longer than the horse. However,
because it is a hybrid, the mule is sterile and cannot
reproduce. There have been extremely rare reports of a few
female mules having produced young after they were bred to
male asses or to stallions. The first mules in North America
are thought to have been bred by George Washington.
What kind of animal is an ox?
An ox is the same as a bull, with one significant exception.
The ox has been castrated. He's then trained to work,
pulling plows. Sounds like he's got the raw end of the deal,
but actually he's lucky. Few bull calves in the US are
raised to breed. Many are also castrated (like the ox,
they're called "steers") and raised to be slaughtered for
beef.

One Wrong Might Make You Wary!
While ferrying workers back and forth from our offshore
oil rig, the helicopter I was on lost power and went down.
Fortunately, it landed safely in a lake. Struggling to get
out, one man tore off his seat belt, inflated his life vest
and jerked open the exit door.
"Don't jump!" the pilot called out. "This thing is
supposed to float!"
As the man leapt from the helicopter into the lake, he
yelled back, "Yeah, and it's supposed to fly too!"
I know just how the man feels, although he might be
jumping to conclusions.
This story puts me back to days when I had a real estate
business. My partner and I used to buy and sell properties
all over the U.S, in England and in India. The properties
were all commercial in nature, apartment houses, warehouses,
condominiums etc.
When we first began we were naive. We found we got caught
many times buying a property that was not wholly what the
owner or his realtor said it was. Fortunately we never
really got stung too bad, but several bad buys soon made us
wary.
We used to look at properties and listen to the realtor and
the owner. Then, when they did not think we were around we
would slip back and speak to caretakers, renters and people
in a complex. Often we found information from these people
that did not properly compare with what the owner or his
realtor were telling us. When that happened we simply
dropped the deal then and there.
When you are 2500 miles away from your investment, things
have to go right. If you make a bad buy it is too expensive
to fix. Adopting this method we soon found that we usually
had to look at up to fifteen properties before we found one
where the stories of the owner, realtor, caretaker and
residents all appeared the same. Then we purchased. Every
time we did we had a winner, and made money. We then made
that "system" a buying pattern.
So, when we looked at a property we looked for stories that
didn't match. When we found one, just one, we, like the man
in the helicopter, jumped.
I have found that in life's situations there are many times
and things that are like that. If there is one thing wrong
that you discover, even with things you are doing yourself,
you can bet there are at least another nine things wrong. It
might be time to jump.
One Wrong Might Make You Wary!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Understanding Medical Terminology
A Little Bit More
PART 6 of 7
I've created these words and although they meet the criteria of
placing them in the right way, they are completely meaningless.
In order to use this medical terminology properly, you also need
some understanding of the different bodily functions and the
ability of the organ itself to do certain things. Common sense
has to be used in defining a diagnosis and thus the treatment.
And please don't ever take this as a diagnosis. It's simply
meant to be a fun exercise. (I do this for students who get
stuck on the different parts of a word and soon they relax and
find enjoyment in something they can create.)
"HYPERHEPATSCOPY" "hyper hepat scopy" This could
read to have high scoping or examination of the liver.you
can't scope the liver except in very special ways. Can you
also see how this word would be very difficult to pronounce?
So using a combining form would be very helpful.
"DYS PNEUMO OTOMY" "dys pneumo otomy" This would
mean making an opening into painful lungs ..or making a
painful opening into the lungs. Now you could put a tube
into the space between the lobes and the ribs, but it would
be a different procedure and also has a different meaning..
"PRE GASTRO ECTOMY" "pre gastro ectomy" This would
mean a removal of the part before the stomach.what could
that be? The esophagus? That would then be called and
esophagectomy.rarely done.
"POLY NEURO PLEGIA" "poly neuro plegia" This would
mean many or much paralysis of the brain. MMMmmm.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Strong Winds - In More Ways Than One?
Can you imagine winds strong enough to blow 11 railway cars
off the tracks? That is what happened in northern China.
Apparently this is not the first time either. This area is
well inland and the winds are not considered tropical storms
or typhoons (hurricanes) as one gets in areas adjoining
shore lines. This area has strong winds all the time. Wow!
Can you imagine the force they must have to take 11 railroad
cars off the tracks?
By the way, for those of you who think I lie in waiting for
stories related to climate change, this is not such a story.
I simply find myself amazed that such strong winds exist,
and are frequent. How do people live in that country?
On another matter, I see the medical community has some
research showing vitamins A, E and beta carotene may not be
as good for us as we once thought. Studies appear to have
concluded these particular vitamins increase our risk of
death.
Most of us take vitamins thinking we will help avoid viruses
and disease. We take them to keep healthy. Some even think
they will prolong life, or at least make life in our later
years happier and healthier. News like this can be somewhat
disconcerting.
Be not surprised too much by such news. It is typical of
most of the wondrous things medicine can do. There is
another “pill” story that is also troublesome.
The drug methadone, used to reduce narcotics users
dependence on heroin has been found to also reduce pain.
Doctors have been allowed to prescribe it to patients for
years. Well someone found that if you take methadone and
alcohol you can get a huge “high” so it has become very
popular. The problem is that combination can be deadly and
it is killing people by the hundreds. In fact is has been
called the next big “killer”.
The point here is that as humans we have for a very long
while taken our doctors advice as gospel. I suppose there is
some room for doing that, but the real problem comes when
the doctor takes the advice of the pharmaceutical companies
as gospel.
Pharmaceutical companies are in business for one reason only
and to believe or even enjoy a shadow of a thought that they
are moral, upstanding, caregiving and concerned about public
health is ludicrous to the extreme. They will develop
anything and peddle it under any banner in order to get
their hands on your money.
So here we have a trusting patient gaining advice and a
prescription from a trusted doctor, who in turn trusted a
pharmaceutical company, who now takes the medicine the
doctor prescribes.
Our use of these chemicals will literally come back to haunt
us. I’m waiting for the jury to come in with a verdict
concerning the widespread use of viagra and cialis.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Laconic: Where does the word "laconic" come from?
From "Laconia" - the general name for Spartan territory. The
Spartans were noted for their brusque speech - the best
example of it being their reply when Philip of Macedon wrote
to their magistrates: "If I enter Laconia I will level
Lacedaemon to the ground." The Spartans' reply was: "If."
