What were the Crusades all about?
The Crusades were a series of wars undertaken by Christian
Europeans between the 11th and 14th centuries. The goal was
to recover control of the Holy Land, specifically Jerusalem,
from the Muslims and convert the area to Christianity. Some
crusaders really did see the Crusades as a strictly pious
endeavor. Others took up the cause as a way to gain land,
power, and money. (What else is new?) The First Crusade was
the only one to end in victory for the Christians. Their
armies took Jerusalem in 1099 and massacred many Muslims and
Jews. A "Latin Kingdom" of Jerusalem then began, but it fell
in 1291. The later Crusades were primarily expeditions to
assist those who already were in the Holy Land.

Vitamins 'increase death risk'

Cape Town - Some vitamin supplements could do you more harm
than good, according to research published on Wednesday in
the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
"Beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E seem to increase
the risk of death," said the researchers, operating under
the umbrella of the internationally-respected Cochrane
Collaboration.
The findings were however immediately rejected by British
nutrition guru Patrick Holford, currently on tour in South
Africa.
"I suspect it's an attempt to demote vitamin therapy so we
keep taking the drugs," he said in a statement.
Holford has been under fire in South Africa for a statement
that the antiretroviral AZT was "proving less effective than
vitamin C" in treating Aids.
The researchers included doctors from Denmark, Serbia and
Italy, a number of them members of the highly-respected
Cochrane Collaboration, a network whose methods are regarded
as the epitome of evidence-based medicine.
They probed the effect "antioxidant supplements" had on
death rates from all causes when those supplements were
being tested for preventing gastrointestinal cancer.
Data analysed from clinical trials
To do this, they analysed data from 47 clinical trials
conducted since October 2005 comparing beta carotene,
vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium.
Those trials involved over 180 000 participants, some of
whom were completely healthy, and some of whom already had a
specific disease.
"Our systematic review contains a number of findings," said
the researchers, who were led by Dr Goran Bjelakovic of the
Copenhagen University Hospital.
"Beta carotene, vitamin A and vitamin E given singly or
combined with other antioxidant supplements significantly
increase mortality.
"There is no evidence that vitamin C may increase longevity.
We lack evidence to refute a potential negative effect of
vitamin C on survival."
They said the potential effect of vitamin C and selenium on
mortality needed further study.
Study fails the test - Holford
Holford however said the study failed "the four key tests of
'publication bias'."
He said the summary of the study did not correlate with the
actual results, and failed to note the study's own finding
that vitamins given in combination either reduced, or did
not increase, mortality.
"If you can have one take-home message it is that
antioxidants are team players and reduce mortality in
combination, and that vitamin C and selenium are more
beneficial than beta-carotene or vitamin A," he said.
In addition, two "classic primary prevention studies", where
vitamin E resulted in major drop in the heart attack rates,
were excluded from the JAMA study.
"In conclusion, I will keep doing what I've always been
doing, because this study confirms it - and that is to
supplement a combination of antioxidants, including selenium
and high dose vitamin C, because, as this study says, it
seems to make you live longer and reduce your risk of
premature death."

Can you see how it all goes back to understanding your consent
and what could be planned for you? If your consent says someone
is going to look at your kidney (which one) and remove the
stone(s) it doesn't give the medical team the right to remove
your kidney. But would you know the difference? Probably, if you
had a really good in-depth understanding explanation. So insist
on the explanation and study some medical pictures. But it's
still your body: your decision. Your signature will be on that
consent form. You have to sign it and date it, and it has to be
witnessed. And it has to show that the doctor gave you clear
explanations of the procedure. But it is your responsibility to
understand what is being said. So use all the tools at your
disposal: dictionary, questions, medical atlas.
If you are now going through some sort of procedure and are
faced with something similar, I want to remind you that you went
to your doctor to get help for something that is causing you
grief. You want that fixed. So make sure you know what is going
to get fixed and not be faced with still another problem. This
is a partnership. Your responsibility is just as important as
your health care team's responsibility. So do your part. The
consent will show theirs.

There’s trouble in camp when the government starts to tell
the press what they can print. There should be a real
uprising over this issue. Apparently the government asked
the Times not to print a story.

While I can understand there are many, many things a
government does not want printed or presented to the public
the government’s responsibility is to keep the information
to themselves. Once a newspaper or television has
information it cannot then be suppressed.
One of the problems with this is that when we get further
into global warming you know there is lots of information
the government will not be telling you. However, if a news
organization gets information and the government steps in
then we have trouble. From that time on we have a
dictatorship.
By the way there is no such thing as a benevolent
dictatorship. It simply cannot be done. While there are some
dictatorships that appear, on the surface, to be fair and
relatively easy to deal with the fact remains they control,
completely, the lives of the people living under it.
That is one of my major concerns about our trip into global
warming. I fear governments will want to protect the status
quo, continue to let big corporations reap benefits and do
all they can to protect the politicians while the rest of us
suffer extraordinarily from the mistakes they make.
Withholding information from the public is the first in a
long series of steps that will render life impossible for
some while others remain unaffected. It is no longer
government of the people, for the people, by the people. It
is then - we are in this position and you will do as you are
told.
