TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
What is the "Holy Grail" and what is it supposed to be able
to do?
Where, exactly, in America do the "deer and the antelope
play"?
--------------
ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Were there really Children's Crusades?
Yes. There were actually two separate Children's Crusades.
The first, in 1212 was led by a French peasant boy named
Steven of Cloyes. Steven talked more than thirty thousand
boys and girls, most younger than twelve, to follow him to
Palestine. The children met a bad end. Some drowned on the
voyage over; the rest died of disease or starved to death.
Some were sold as slaves by unscrupulous skippers. A second
Children's Crusade, led by another French boy, Nicholas of
Cologne, marched across the Alps. Most of the twenty
thousand (mostly German) kids who followed Nicholas died of
hunger or exhaustion. The pope encouraged the survivors to
go home.
How could parents let their kids go off on a Crusade?
Children were seen differently in medieval society than they
are now. In some sense, childhood didn't really exist.
According to The Disappearance of Childhood by Neil Postman,
kids over the age of seven, who finally had command over
speech, were pretty much considered adults. In the Middle
Ages, kids worked and slept alongside adults and if they
went to school, it was often far from their families.
Postman postulates that the concept of kids being kids
beyond the age of seven came about when the printing press
was developed in the 16th century. Why? The printing press
"created a new definition of adulthood based on reading
competence, and, correspondingly, a new concept of childhood
based on reading incompetence." Whether you accept Postman's
theory or not, it's also believed that parents were less
emotionally attached to children in the Middle Ages than
they are now, perhaps because of the high infant mortality
rate.

Bogus Medicines Flood Developing World - UN Report
“Counterfeit medicines, some of them sold over the Internet,
are swamping unregulated markets in developing nations with
sometimes fatal results, the UN drug control watchdog said
on Thursday.
Some 25 to 50 percent of the medicines used in developing
countries were now believed to be fake, the International
Narcotics Control Board (INCB) said in its 2006 report,
quoting World Health Organization findings. Providers ranged
from makeshift village markets to Web sites. … The board
spotlighted dangers inherent in graft-ridden,
weakly-regulated markets, where bogus medicines had
proliferated, and the widespread and growing misuse of
prescription and weight-loss drugs. The annual report also
said Iranians had become the world's highest per capita
abusers of opiates as they straddled export corridors from …
Afghanistan, source of more than 90 percent of the opium
produced globally. …” [Reuters/Factiva]
The Times adds that “… What is new, the board cautions, is
the sign of a resurgence of poppy-growing in Pakistan, if
not back to the heights of the 1990s. There is much more
evidence of the crop being traded with China, along the
northern road through the Himalayas, or by air. Central Asia
and some former Soviet bloc countries are also mopping up
the trade, and Europe, including Britain, continues to get
90 percent of its heroin from Afghanistan. … The three
success stories of opium eradication still stand there
proudly amid the disasters: Burma, Laos and Vietnam. The
board reported a continued fall in opium poppy growing in
almost all countries in East and South-East Asia. That has
followed determined government efforts to penalize the
growing of the crop, and in Vietnam's case, rapid economic
development offering many other jobs. It has not meant that
use of all illegal drugs has fallen at all; amphetamine use
has spread in the region. …” [The Times (UK)/Factiva]
AFP notes that “Africa has become one of the main crossroads
in the traffic of heroin and cocaine, the INCB said in its
annual report. ‘Taking advantage of the weak interdiction
capacities in Africa, drug trafficking networks are using
the region as a transit area for smuggling cocaine from
South America... (and) heroin from west and southeast Asia’
to Europe and North America, the INCB said. Cocaine
trafficking in Africa is ‘a particularly worrisome
development,’ said the organization. It pointed out that
cocaine was often exchanged for heroin before being shipped
to Asia. ...” [Agence France Presse/Factiva]
Dow Jones further writes that “… The INCB said unregulated
markets, such as drugs sold over the Internet or through
mail order, have expanded rapidly, and pose a real threat to
public health. The UN body said the illicit pharmaceutical
drug market includes genuine and fake drugs, and increased
demand for prescription drugs will boost trade for illegal
vendors. Professor Hamid Ghodese, a member of the INCB, told
Dow Jones Newswires that prescription drug abuse may have
already exceeded that of traditional illicit drugs in
Europe, and said the Internet has fueled the demand. Ghodese
said the ease of access for buying drugs online has created
dependents, and he called for greater regulation. …” [Dow
Jones/Factiva]

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 1 of 4
"Courage means to keep working a relationship, to continue
seeking solutions to difficult problems, and to stay focused
during stressful periods." Denis Waitley Author and Speaker
It was good to meet June again. It's amazing what great
conversations you can have at the local recycling place. As we
were both flinging magazines in to the "glossy bin", I renewed a
friendship that has held for many years. We caught up on family
things and then I mentioned she had shrunk a bit. She shared
with me that she was just going through another bout of
chemotherapy to shrink another tumor that had sprung up while
everyone had thought things had settled down again. She didn't
sound too hopeful. I admired her courage in the face of this
setback. Personally I have only had one brush with cancer, but
that was enough to know that I could probably overcome the
negative aspect, but I would never seek out the experience
voluntarily. It's take great fortitude, courage, and
determination to face a real cancer experience.
My attitude now (it wasn't always like this, unfortunately) is
to be focussed on specific goals, to be positive, to accept my
reality, and then to move forward. I honestly try to live Dr.
Waitley's wisdom. I have the quotation framed in my office and
it provides me with the courage I need to go past the hurdles or
annoyances that confront me frequently.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Corruption Large And Small?
I wonder how people think corruption can go on and still
have an economically viable world in which to live. When one
man willfully sets out to get more and can knowingly hurt
others in the process then you have a condition that is
untenable.
When you multiply that by millions and you have a condition
that fosters anarchy. You know what anarchy is? That’s where
rule is conducted by the strongest, regardless of law, and
on an extremely local basis. In other words the gangs have
it.
Oh well I anticipate this condition coming much sooner than
any of us think, because of global warming and a host of
other things I have recently researched.
I am in the process of writing a book on what global warming
means to me. While doing that I ran into many other
situations that may well be far more threatening than global
warming. Indeed I am rapidly developing the opinion that
global warming is used as a focal point to keep our minds
off these other things. When I am ready I will reveal them
to you.
I notice that governments have no compunction about taking
from others without giving anything in return. The U.S. and
Britain have recently enacted into Iraqi law a situation
where they can come in and take the oil without Iraqi
government approval and without paying the Iraqi’s anything.
I know someone will say that is the price the Iraqi’s pay
for us coming in and doing them the favor of democratizing
them. We spent billions and lost thousands of men on their
behalf - now it’s payback time. I would suppose this
attitude would indeed be prevalent.
It is interesting that it also coincides with decreasing oil
production throughout the world, or maybe I wasn’t supposed
to say that..

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Naked Truth: Why do we call absolute truth "the naked
truth"?
Because, according to ancient legend, Truth and Falsehood
once went bathing. When they came out of the water,
Falsehood ran ahead, dressed herself in Truth's clothing and
sped away. Truth, unwilling to appear in Falsehood's
clothing, went "naked".

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
In truth the greatest miracle is this: the miracle of
profound self-transformation. Many of the miracles
recorded in history are simply metaphors for this
simple truth, that we each have the power in our own
hands to create the miracle of becoming the person we
were meant to be.

The cowboy was trying to buy an insurance policy. The
insurance agent was going down the list of standard
questions.
"Ever have an accident?"
"Nope, nary a one."
"None? You've never had any accidents."
"Nope. Ain't never had one. Never."
"That's hard to believe. No accidents at all?"
"Well, rattler bit me one time."
"Wouldn't you consider that an accident?"
"Hell no. Damned varmint bit me on purpose."
