Was there really a Johnny Appleseed or is that just the

How come Americans use a donkey and an elephant as symbols

What is the "Holy Grail" and what is it supposed to be able
to do?
The "Holy Grail," a popular feature of medieval literature
and legend, appears variously as a chalice, cup, or platter
that was supposed to have been used by Christ at the Last
Supper. According to legend, it was brought to England by
St. Joseph of Arimathea. Sometimes, the Grail is depicted as
a cauldron or stone into which a bleeding lance drips.
Whatever its shape, the Grail is said to have miraculous
powers to provide food and heal the sick. The Grail was the
object of numerous knightly quests in medieval literature
and makes up a significant part of the Arthurian cycle of
legends. Because it was so difficult to find and could only
be revealed to a pure knight, the phrase "Holy Grail" has
come to refer to any object of an extended or difficult
quest.
Where, exactly, in America do the "deer and the antelope
play"?
They don't. The popular American folk song "Home on the
Range" would lead you to believe that antelope frolic on the
Western plains, but there are no antelope in North America
and never have been. True antelope are only found in Asia
and Africa. There IS an animal in North America that some
people like to call an "antelope," but it's actually a
pronghorn sheep

Safe In Your Own Little Cocoon
A father put his three year old daughter to bed, told
her a story and listened to her prayers which she
ended by saying "God bless mommy, God bless
daddy, God bless grandma, and goodbye grandpa."
The father said, "Why did you say good-bye grandpa?"
The little girl said "I don't know daddy, it just seemed
like the thing to do."
The next day grandpa died.
Father thought it was a strange coincidence. A few
months later the father put the girl to bed and listened
to her prayers, which went like this: "God bless mommy,
God bless daddy and good-bye grandma."
Next day the grandmother died.
My gosh, thought the father, this kid is in contact with
the other side.
Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed
the dad heard her say "God bless mommy and
good-bye daddy."
He practically went into shock. Couldn't sleep all night
and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He
was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch sent in and
watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until
midnight he would be OK. He felt safe in the office,
so instead of going home at the end of the day he
stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and
jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived, he
breathed a sigh of relief and went home.
When he got home his wife said "I've never seen you
work so late, what's the matter?"
He said "I don't want to talk about it, I've just spent the
worst day of my life."
She said "You think you had a bad day, you'll never
believe what happened to me. This morning the
mailman dropped dead on our porch."
Fascinating little story isn't it? All the way through we
thought the father was the man who put the little girl to
bed. The implication of the joke is, of course, that the
mailman ended up being the father.
It brings out what I call one of life's greatest tragedies.
We all move around in our daily lives as if we know
everything within our own little sphere. Then something
happens like in the joke above, to show us we really
don't know everything.
In fact few of us know everything going on around us.
We just pretend we do and continue to do so until some
kind of a catastrophe wakes us up for a short while.
The point here is that all of life is a learning ground. If
we,
by choice, keep looking, asking, knocking then we
continually expand our horizons and experience a
growth and joy. Life does not begin or end with our
little circle.
For the one who is inquisitive and always looking to new
and different things, that one usually has fewer
catastrophes in life. That one is usually prepared for
more things to confront him/her, and, as a rule tackles
new things as if they are fun. The rewards are many for
those who do not take life for granted, who look at life
as a never ending learning experience. Where do
you stand? Are you...

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson
April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 2 of 4
Each of our lives IS our private life. It is not your spouse's
or your child's' or your parent's. It is yours and you have to
live it, manage it and acknowledge that this is the real you.
Those feelings of fear or joy are yours: not someone else's.
This also means that you walk in your own shoes: along your
path. You actually have to do the walking (living). No one can
do it for you. And that's hard to realise and then to accept. So
it's vital that you create some sort of boundaries of things you
will allow into your "experience" and those you will not accept.
It also means you can CHOOSE things for your own good.
My purpose here is to acknowledge that the walk of anyone with a
degenerative condition.be it lupus, arthritis, or cancer, is the
immediate problem or crisis. However, it's still very possible
to have the end in mind and to stick to your long term goal.
First, there is the choice between a positive and a negative
outlook. And it is a CHOICE. Be encouraged that there is
tremendous hope for any such degenerative condition, especially
cancer, with new treatments. But I caution you that you will
have to work very hard to be positive rather than have to accept
all the negativity around you. It's almost like building a
protective wall and saying NO to things that others want you to
hear. People will delight in sharing all sorts of unpleasant
experiences just when you need to be propped up with big doses
of hope, energy, love, and massive amounts of determination
mixed with focus. (Please feel free to frame Dr. Waitley's
quotation.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

No More Oil?
I see the stock backdating practice is heating up with some
coming under criminal charges. I also see some pretty fast
maneuvering in board rooms to get people into positions
where it won’t hurt the company if any are charged. All
sorts of fun going on in money circles.
I also see North Korea appears to be warming up to “more
aid”. That should keep them quiet for a year or so.
The U.S. is entering into an agreement with Brazil on the
matter of ethanol. I can see all sorts of problems with that
move. Not only the move with Brazil, but the whole ethanol
thing is a bad one.
Do you realize that the amount of ethanol to fill an SUV
just once uses enough land to feed one person for a whole
year? Moreover with the world’s population increasing at the
rate of a billion every 10 years I see some trouble coming.
I guess the U.S. or North America just wants to keep running
its energy engine regardless who starves. You can bet that
one will come home to roost.
Do you know why the rush to ethanol? Not because the U.S.
energy sources are outside the U.S. and ethanol is “inside”.
The truth is that the world’s oil resources are running out.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Oil on Troubled Waters: What is the reason we speak of
pacifying someone as "pouring oil on troubled waters"?
Because it's a scientific fact that oil poured on a rough
sea will lessen the waves. benjamin Franklin, on hearing
this Biblical phrase repeated, decided to test its literal
truth. He poured oil on the ocean and found the waves were
considerably reduced.

Nagging Wife
Farmer Jake had a nagging wife who made his life miserable.
The only real peace that he got was when he was out in the
field plowing.
One day when he was out in the field, Jake's wife brought
his lunch to him. Then she stayed while he quietly ate and
berated him with a constant stream of nagging and
complaining. Suddenly, Jake's old mule kicked up his back
legs, striking the wife in the head, and killed her
instantly.
At the wake, Jake's minister noticed that when the women
offered their sympathy to Jake he would nod his head up and
down. But when the men came up and spoke quietly to him, he
would shake his head from side to side.
When the wake was over and all the mourners had left, the
minister approached Jake and asked, "Why was it that you
nodded your head up and down to all the women and shook your
head from side to side to all the men?"
"Well," Jake replied, "The women all said how nice she
looked, and her dress was so pretty, so I agreed by nodding
my head up and down. The men all asked, "Is that mule for
sale!?'"
