In American folklore, who was John Henry?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

--------------

Was there really a Johnny Appleseed or is that just the
stuff of American folklore?

Johnny Appleseed really existed and he really did distribute
apple seeds. Johnny's real name was John Chapman, and he
roamed frontier America for more than four decades, handing
out apple seeds to westbound farmers and settlers. In
addition to apple seeds, Johnny was dedicated to spreading
the preaching of Swedenborgianism, a Christian theology
based on the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg.
Swedenborgianism never caught on, but the apples did.

How come Americans use a donkey and an elephant as symbols
for the Democratic and Republican parties?

The donkey started with President Andrew Jackson, a
Democrat. He used the symbol for his party after his
opponents in the 1828 presidential election called him a
"jackass." Illustrator Thomas Nast made Jackson's donkey
famous in his political cartoons. Nast himself came up with
the Republican elephant in an 1874 cartoon. The elephant
initially was meant only to represent the strength of the
"Republican Vote," but it soon came to stand for the party
as a whole.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

Just a Little Willingness to Love...

What is love? A ticklish sensation around the heart that
can't be scratched? Something I earn when I do things right?
Something I give to get something back? My definition is
that love is a willingness to choose to see and respond to
the best in another person, even when they are not
experiencing or expressing it themselves at the moment. This
gives you the opportunity to be loving, no matter what the
other is doing! It also requires that you decide to give up
petty (and not-so-petty) judgments of others and replace
that with the willingness to see them in their best light.
Quite a tall order!

Now, how do you recognize love in your life? Do you have a
well-defined way of recognizing love coming to you? Is it
"it has to look, sound, feel like this or it isn't love"?
Or, are you open to seeing, hearing and feeling love in many
forms? You can miss a lot of love in your life if you have a
narrow, restricting perception of which form is acceptable
to you.

How do you express love in your life? Familiar quotes worthy
of bringing into application are "Work is love made
visible." "Works, not words, are proof of love." and
"Service is nothing more than love in work clothes."
Consider your expressions of love. Do your words match your
actions? Do you say you'll do something for another but
"forget" regularly? Are you willing to match your walk with
your talk? It seems to me to be a waste of energy to spend
much valuable time talking about what I'm going to do, or
what I think I should do, when I could be using that time
for doing it!

Love also looks a lot like time. When we say we love
someone, or, for that matter, that we love to do something,
the proof is often in the time we spend with the person or
the time we spend doing the activity, isn't it? When I was
seeing many couples in my counselling practice, I would
often hear the pain as one partner expressed their
loneliness, saying, "You do not spend time with me." The
demonstration of love means spending time with those you say
you love, doesn't it? We've all seen or heard stories about
parents who were too busy and missed their children's
childhoods. Regretting it later is not nearly as effective
as doing it now!

Remember, too, that you cannot give a gift you do not have.
Be loving to yourself. Spend time with yourself. Know what
you enjoy and do it! It is also important to have good
communication skills so that you can communicate to others
clearly when you think they are being unloving to you. I
think it is unloving to allow others to be unloving to you.
We are responsible for teaching people how to treat us! If
you do not say anything, you are telling them it is all
right with you.

IMPORTANT: If love makes the world go round, we'd better do
our bit because the world is turning at 2,000 miles per
hour, and we'd get quite a jolt if it stopped.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 3 of 4

You should plan PAST the immediate situation.past the negative
health conditions, TO the desired outcome. The rest as Dr.
Waitley states, is a matter of dealing with the situation at
hand: the difficult problem: the stressful period. You have
already faced those kind of problems many times in your life.
you can do it again. They may not have had those scary names
attached to a particular situation, but you have been
inconvenienced many times before and emerged victorious. I urge
you to find the courage to overcome this (or any other kind of)
difficulty again. You will be so amazed as to what you find
inside of you.

As you face your challenge, (not running from it or denying its
existence) you can create your own environment, surrounding
yourself with people who want to share your goals and your
desire to restore your wellbeing. It will mean change. Maybe
different foods, a new or different exercise program, or it may
mean the elimination of something that has been part of your
life. If it's to change a habit, surround yourself with people
who will support you.
You know what I mean. If you want to stop drinking, you want to
avoid hanging out at the local pub. If you wish to stop smoking,
avoid the employee smoking pit. (You can catch up on the gossip
later.) If you want to cut your fat intake, avoid your friendly
fast food drive through window. You might also want to shut off
the TV for a little while and check up on the neighborhood with
a quick walk.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Another Of Man’s Results -

There is a report out today about obese young girls going
through puberty early.

Apparently this contributes to use of alcohol, early sexual
activities and eventually mental breakdown. The condition
appears more common amongst the poor.

In another story it appears that people are getting
operations to fix obesity, rather than control their diet.

As I see it the problem is a far greater problem than
controlling diet. Even if these people tried to control diet
it would likely do no good.

I believe the problem lies in the food man produces for his
own consumption. Beginning right on the farm the grains and
the beef or pork are chemically treated, thus altering their
original form.

We have been doing this now for several decades and now we
find the numbers of obese people to be dramatically more
than three or four decades ago.

Science, of course, has not yet put these two conditions
together, or maybe they have but big money has kept it
quiet. I would believe the latter.

In addition we have television. Marketers have long ago
learned how to reach the younger population. Beginning with
children too young to know what they are watching, who have
been put in front of a television because it makes
babysitting easier, marketers have learned how to reach
these kids. To reach a youngster at age 12 is a snap. The
kid has already been indoctrinated into the process. So, if
you have a nice sugar product you want to introduce, guess
where you go, guess who consumes it and guess what the
results are.

Marketers are wise enough to realize how to use peer
pressure and use that in their marketing philosophies as
well. There is no stone left unturned in the business of
making money. No morality either. Marketers don’t care if
their products cause obesity.

So where can one go to find food that will not cause this
problem? Nowhere.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Paddywhack: Why do we call a spank a "paddywhack"?

The Irish call St. Patrick, their patron saint, Padraig -
and so an Irishman is called a "Paddy". Irish comedians in
the English theater were very partial tot he "slapstick" -
and so a "paddywhack" is a harmless slap on the buttocks in
jest.
