In American folklore, who was John Henry?
John Henry, a legendary black American of extraordinary
strength, was the hero of a popular American folk ballad.
The song narrates his contest with a steam drill, in which
John Henry crushed more rock than did the machine but
nevertheless died of the strain. John Henry is often seen as
a symbol of man's doomed struggle against the machine.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, some factual basis
exists for the ballad of John Henry: "When the Chesapeake
and Ohio Railroad drove the Big Bend Tunnel through the
Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia, from 1870 to 1873,
steel drivers hammered steel drills into the rock to make
holes into which to pack explosives. The modern steam drill
was introduced into the South in 1870; hence, it is possible
that the comparative efficiency of the two methods could
have been tested at Big Bend."
Will exercising my brain protect me from Alzheimer's?
Good news for Sudden Facts readers! New research suggests
that adults with hobbies that exercise their brains - such
as reading, chess, or jigsaw puzzles - are two and a half
times less likely to have Alzheimer's disease later in life.
Bad news for television addicts: leisure limited to watching
TV may actually increase the risk of Alzheimer's. The
results are based on a survey of people in their seventies.
Researchers analyzed the leisure activities in young and
middle adulthood of 193 Alzheimer's patients and 358 control
patients (people without symptoms of Alzheimer's).

Where's Your Self Confidence?
"Hey, Mom," asked Johnny "can you give me twenty dollars?"
"Certainly not."
"If you do," he went on, "I'll tell you what dad said to the
maid when you were at the beauty shop."
His mother's ears perked up and, grabbing her purse, she
handed over the money. "Well? What did he say?"
"He said, 'Hey, Marie, make sure you wash my socks
tomorrow.' "
The joke might be cute, but the thing that impresses me
about this is her complete lack of confidence and trust.
If one is not confident in their relationship with others
they can develop a paranoia, just like the woman in this
joke.
You might say, "Well maybe her husband is running around on
her." Then I say to you that it could be he has reason. When
a woman is a confident mate few males will stray. When a
mate, male or female, lacks confidence in themselves they
look for opportunities for they mate to stray. Sooner or
later they'll find it. What a shame, when all they need do
is work on their own self confidence.
What does that do? For starters it changes you point of view
entirely. Instead of concentrating on your weaknesses and
looking for results therefrom you are not concentrating on
your strong points and acting thereon. The difference in all
your relationships will show up immediately.
What people like in relationships is equality. Oh, yes,
there are those who want to beat you down, and so long as
you go down that appears to be what they want. However,
sooner or later they will look for an equal for only an
equal presents a challenge, a sharing, a loyalty.
Some feel there is need for one to be dominant and one to be
subservient. You can believe that nonsense if you like, but
give me someone with courage and confidence to share my life
with me. Don't give me someone for whom I must do the work,
the thinking and the defending. I don't want a child as a
mate I want a mate that is my equal.
I want this because after all the testing, after all they
tirades, after all the attempts to be the dominant party in
a relationship, and after all that has failed because each
of us realizes our partner is an equal..... I have a friend.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 4 of 4
Do as much research on your own. Find out about all the
different possible treatments. A fast and favorite place of mine
to get information is Google. http://www.google.com
Think of a group of words that have meaning for you: something
you want to research. Put quotation marks round the entire
phrase and hit "enter". You will be amazed at what shows up!
You will have lots of information to sift through. Check out as
many sites as you feel you need. Some sites will be very
trustworthy and some less so, but at least you can read and
check out the sources. Don't allow others to think for you. A
change is in order. Otherwise nothing else will happen. Don't
allow anyone to discourage you from trying. At no time must you
ever give up hope.no matter what anyone tells you.
There are too many instances of people achieving their health
goals despite being told their lives are finished. The path
might be difficult and stressful, but isn't that the same for
many things you have had to do in the past? Stack the odds in
your favor. It's your game and you mean to win. Stick with
people who can and will enhance your determination.
Honestly, there are many, many people who have overcome these
negative health conditions. Unfortunately, good news is either
seen as a miracle and a one-time fluke, or it doesn't sell or
get mentioned at all. Want to learn more positive news? Turn off
the TV and radio unless you know the programs will make you feel
better. Tune out those that call themselves 'realists". They
will only scare you with their negativity tune into your own
goals. Focus on them alone.

If you haven't ever read and used the Power Pause, please
request a copy of it here. It was developed by John Harricharan
http://www.insight2000.com/ and has got to be one of the very
best "tools" to help you deal with negativity and distractions.
Did you know that the major discovery of the twentieth century
is learning how our minds work? It had been proven over and
over, that we create our own realities. That includes all our
present and past experiences but only now are we understanding
just how we arrived at those. Now use that knowledge to get past
the hurdle and on to your goal. Seek health as your long-term
goal. There may be a few dips in the road, but the end result
will be positive. Your determination and courage make it so.
Your future is full of hope.
Spring always comes. The daffodil is the flower of cancer
awareness. As it goes through its cycles of growth, it reaches a
dormant stage.and then emerges stronger and more beautiful than
ever before. When faced with a difficult problem or a stressful
period, become like the daffodil: stronger, more courageous, and
much more valuable to everyone. You can if you think you can.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Stay On Top Of Those Bugs!
It is an interesting day for me. I read so much, doing
research for a new book, that my mind is buzzing.
I see scientists have located what they believe to be the
starting place for H5N1 Bird Flu virus. It is in China,
which, of course, denies the report.
They think that finding the source of a disease will help
them fight it. Now they have found that a couple other
epicenters have been established by the disease.
I like the idea science appears to be in control of this
kind of thing. However, I am led to wonder how long they can
stay on top of it. I think there are two or three dozen more
similar diseases out there they will also have to “manage”.
As our climate warms, even just a little, it presents an
environment within which many strains of disease can now
thrive. It is clear science will have its hands full.
Over the last week or ten days I have seen a noticeable
absence of articles on global warming. I don’t know if
governments got to the press or if the press is thinking the
public is tired of such material. Nonetheless folks, the
affects of climate change are coming, quickly, so don’t be
lulled into thinking all is well because you don’t see
anything in the papers.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Quaker: How did the "quakers" get that name?
George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends, in his
speeches admonished the magistrates of England and told them
they should "quake" at the word of the Lord. the term
"Quakers" comes from this phrase - and was devised by
Justice Bennet, a magistrate of Derby.

HA! HA! HA!
This guy walks into a bar with his golden retriever. "Hey,
can I get a drink on the house if my dog talks for you?"
"Dogs can't talk, pal. But if you can prove to me yours
does, I'll give you a drink. If not, I get to kick your
ass."
"Okay," says the guy. He turns to his dog. "Okay fella. Tell
me -- what is on top of your doghouse?"
"Roof!" The man turns and smiles at the bartender.
"THAT ain't talking! Any dog can bark!"
"Okay boy. Tell me -- how does sandpaper feel?"
"Ruff!"
"What the hell are you tryin' to pull, mister?"
"Okay, okay," says the man. "One more question please. Okay
buddy, tell me -- who is the greatest ball player who ever
lived?"
"Ruth."
The bartender beats the hell out of the guy and throws onto
the sidewalk outside of the bar, then throws the dog out
next to him. The dog stands up and looks at the guy.
"Geez. D'ya think I shoulda said DiMaggio?"
