ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Will humans ever reach a life expectancy of 100 years or
more?
Possibly, but not for awhile yet. Life expectancy continues
to rise, especially in Japan and France, but scientists say
that even the countries that have made the greatest lifespan
improvements to date will not reach a life expectancy at
birth of 100 years until at least the 22nd century. They
predict the US won't reach that benchmark until the 26th
century. Currently, life expectancy is about 79 years for
American women and 72 years for men. Advances in medicine,
such as antibiotics and vaccines, have dramatically improved
the average life expectancy during the last century.
Is there an upper limit for human life expectancy?
Well, we won't really know for SURE until we get there (or
don't get there), but many scientists believe life
expectancy can't go on rising forever. Most cell biologists
agree that there is a biological limit to human cell
reproduction making the maximum age possible for human life
to be about 110 years. You may have heard reports of humans
living a few years longer than that, but they are few and
far between and most reports are unverified.

No Rest for the Weary
In a new national survey, 60 percent of American women say
they don't get enough sleep. What's keeping them awake? And
what can they do about it?
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Barbara Kantrowitz
Newsweek
Updated: 2:00 p.m. PT March 7, 2007
March 7, 2007 - If you're yawning as you read this, you're
not alone. According to a poll released Tuesday by the
National Sleep Foundation (NSF), American women are very,
very tired. Sixty percent say they don't get enough rest
most nights of the week while 43 percent report that daytime
sleepiness interferes with their regular activities. The NSF
survey, called the 2007 Sleep in America poll, focused on
women this year. Eighty percent of those polled say that
when they are drowsy during the day, they just try to keep
going--often by drinking caffeinated beverages (65 percent
have three or more cups of coffee or other caffeinated
drinks every day). All women are affected, but the survey
found that working mothers (72 percent) and single, working
women (68 percent) were the most likely to experience sleep
problems such as insomnia.
Most of the poll's conclusions are not new; previous studies
have reported that women's sleep problems are widespread.
But the poll, conducted annually by the NSF, does provide
some interesting insights into how women's lifestyles affect
sleep. For example, women may have trouble falling asleep
but they're not doing anything to wind down before they go
to bed. According to the poll (which surveyed 1,003 women
between the ages of 18 and 64), women spend the last hour
before bedtime watching television, doing household chores
or working in front of a computer. All of these activities
make it harder to fall asleep. Most sleep doctors recommend
slowing down in that presleep hour by avoiding stressful
activities and dimming lights (that means no television or
computer screens).
Persistent sleep problems are a major public-health issue
because inadequate rest puts women at risk for other
troubles. The survey found a clear association between poor
sleep and poor mood, a connection backed up by other
research. More than half of the women polled (55 percent)
reported that they felt unhappy, sad or depressed in the
past month and a third said they had recently felt hopeless
about the future. Other research has shown that inadequate
rest and mood problems create a kind of vicious circle, with
each making the other worse.
Women's sleep problems change as their life situations
change. In the study, pregnant women spent the most time in
bed (an average of eight hours, 14 minutes) but 84 percent
reported symptoms of insomnia a few nights a week. In
addition, 40 percent say they have signs of a sleep
disorder, such as snoring, apnea or restless-leg syndrome.
And 30 percent of pregnant women say they rarely or never
get adequate rest. But it gets worse when the pregnancy
ends. Not surprisingly, women who have just given birth are
the most likely to say they rarely or never get a good
night's sleep. Even after the kids grow up, it's hard to get
rest. Postmenopausal women report the highest incidence (50
percent) of a sleep disorder.
What should women do if they're having trouble keeping their
eyes open during the day? The first step, sleep experts say,
is to get help from your doctor. So many emotional and
physical factors can affect sleep that it's often impossible
to make a diagnosis without taking a thorough medical
history. Lifestyle changes such as cutting down on caffeine
or reducing stress at night can make a huge difference. The
bedroom should be cool, dark and quiet with comfortable
bedclothes. Nicotine can also interfere with sleep; smokers
should quit. If the problem is physical, such as a sleep
disorder, doctors have many resources from medication for
restless-leg syndrome to mechanical devices for breathing
problems. Sometimes, patients spend the night in a sleep lab
where doctors study and record every breath and movement
during the night to pinpoint where things are going wrong.
So don't just yawn; get the help (and the sleep) you need.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 1 of 5
Lately I have been flooded with "health news"! I thought I would
show you a way to filter some of this "annoyance" so it won't
overwhelm you, or cause additional stress. I question some of
the sources and much of the information. Once in a while, I
wonder what happened to "truth in advertising". Does this not
apply any more? Why is this important?
Many times I wonder what the headline actually means to a
layperson and how this affects them. Would you pay any attention
to it? How could it affect you if you or a loved one were
already affected by such a health condition? If you have just a
little bit of knowledge, how does this make you feel? Do you get
anxious and overwhelmed?
Let's pretend it's 5:00 PM and you're on the way home from work.
You're making a quick detour to the store to pick up some last
minute things dinner things. Then you're ready for an evening
with your family, helping with homework and driving kids. A
usual day so far: till two magazine headlines you at the
checkout counter "scream" at you. Headlines about heart disease,
"out of control" obesity, diets that work and some that don't.
Internet-wise, if someone had sent you a link to the MSNBC
website for health information, here's is what you could be
reading. I pulled this off just to give you a realistic overview
but any magazine rack will offer much the same selection or
maybe different topics. Same disconcerting headlines.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Your health, being centered and your ability to “be with”
your family is far more important than any dollar.
Our Cover Story today speaks of women not getting enough
sleep. Bad news.
I don’t know why it happened but since the time I was a boy
I have noticed people getting away from the idea of rest as
a necessary part of life.
The Christian ethic says you are to rest on Sundays. I am
not here promoting the Christian ethic but I am observing
how so very long ago they knew the need and importance of
rest. It keeps ones psyche in balance.
Over the years I have written much on this topic. Order,
Harmony and Balance are my watchwords. If any part of your
life is missing any one of these ingredients you are setting
yourself up for a fall.
Women will say, “Yes, but I have to get this job done.” or
“If I don’t do it now Johnny won’t be ready for school in
the morning and I won’t have time then.” or “If I don’t do
these three jobs we won’t have enough money to eat.”
These kind of comments are continually coming out of the
mouths of those who are no longer centered. It is exactly
the same as the statement “I think all that health crap is
hogwash!” coming out of the mouth of a smoker.
Long ago people lost the real understanding of the adage -
“To thine ownself be true.”
If you don’t get rested, if you don’t stop “going” all the
time, if you don’t settle down then you are no earthly good
to those you love. You are a far better parent when you are
relaxed and ready to educate your family on life’s true
values.
I often hear those nearing retirement worrying over whether
they will have enough money. Guess what? You need so much
less money when you are retired you won’t believe it. Yes
you will have enough money.
The same is true for those foolishly working three jobs.
Stop. If you drop one, what real difference will it make
financially? All things will work out.
Your health, being centered and your ability to “be with”
your family is far more important than any dollar.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Rack One's Brains: What is the reason a person who is
struggling to remember something is said to "rack his
brains"?
As used here, "rack" means "to stretch or strain by force" -
as a person is stretched on the "rack" or wheel and that is
a rather vivid metaphorical description of the process of
remembering.

He said, ''I was ironing my clothing and the phone rang...so
instead of the phone I picked up the iron and burned my

''But how the heck did you burn the other ear?'' The doctor
asked.
''How do you think I called you people?''
