What is "kuru"?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How is the disease transmitted?
The good news is you can't get it from standing near a cow
or an infected human. You have to have contact with infected
brain tissue. The bad news is that humans HAVE contracted
the disease from EATING cows. So far, human cases have
occurred only in Britain, Ireland, and France, but more than
eighty other countries have received cattle feed that was
infected. It's pretty gruesome, actually, but modern farming
practices permit the remains of cows to be ground up and
used to feed OTHER cows (are we creating cow cannibals?)
That's what made it possible for the disease to spread so
far, so quickly. The US government claims that Americans are
safe because the US banned British cattle feed (Britain is
where the disease started) in 1988, as soon as scientists
speculated that the disease was transmitted that way. US
health authorities also say that they've been unable to find
a single infected cow in the country and estimate the US
infection rate at fewer than one cow in a million.
Can animals besides cows contract mad-cow disease?
Yes. The disease has shown up in both domestic cats and zoo
monkeys, which were receiving tainted beef byproducts in
their food, and was deliberately transmitted by researchers
to a pig. Other animals - including mink, elk, deer, and
sheep - can carry similar diseases (together, these diseases
are known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies).
Sheep, for instance, have gotten a disease called "scrapie"
as far back as 1730. But scrapie doesn't seem to affect
people and no one has ever gotten it from eating mutton.

If You Haven't Been There Don't Knock It!
While I was dining out with my children, a man came over
to our table, and we started talking.
He asked where my kids go to school. I told him we
home-schooled them.
With a raised eyebrow, he asked if my husband is the
sole breadwinner for our family.
I said, "No, I also work ... out of our home."
Then, noticing our two-month-old son, he mentioned that
his daughter had just had a baby, and he wondered what
hospital our son was born in.
"He was born at home," I answered.
The man looked at me, then said, "Wow, you don't get out
much, do you?"
It's easy to put down things that appear to you to be
different. The "Wow, you don't get out much, do you?"
statement is a complete admission of lack of
understanding.
Why shouldn't she home - teach her children, if that is
what she wants? Why shouldn't she go to work to help
support the family if that is what she wants or needs? Why
shouldn't she give birth to her children at home, if that is
what she wants?
It is highly unlikely I would ever be involved in any of these
things. However, I will fight to the death for this woman's
right to do these things. It does not matter if I understand
them. Maybe I never will. Yet this person has a right to do
these things and because I don't understand them in no
way makes them less legitimate.
There is the old adage that one should walk a mile in the
next man's shoes before he is prepared to judge him. Not
bad advice.
A long time ago I knew a man whose favorite saying was
"A man is always down on what he's not up on." I think
my friend is right. We are too quick to judge those things
we do not understand. If we take time to understand and
see, then we accept. It would be a good thing just to accept
first, before judgment, then go learn about it. Surprise
folks with an element of trust. Show them it is fine with
you that they do what they are doing, even if you don't
understand it.
The problem with passing judgment is that judgment is
what will come back to you. If there is not need to pass
judgment - don't. Many a new and wonderful thing has
come out way because there are those who dare to be
different. Accept it, embrace it, protect their rights to be
that way. You just never know when you will run into
something that will be of huge advantage to you.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson
Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 3 of 5
In the long run, will this headline really matter to you?
Probably not, but it does catch you off guard...and that now
leaves you unprepared and maybe a bit more vulnerable to stress.
Before you go into panic mode and feel your heart racing, you
need a lot more information and it won't come from these
articles. So avoid the headlines if at all possible...or try my
simple "filters". This is similar to the filter on your email
program. It removes unwanted information and takes it away to a
remote area (delete bin). Here is how it works. We all have
built-in systems of desires: likes...and dislikes. Long ago, I
discovered that a "like" is something you would be good at if
you developed this behavior or characteristic. A "dislike" is
something you're not going to be good at. So I suggest you
"don't go there". It's too time-consuming to make your bad
habits into good ones. (Use the time to become better at what
you like.) Who said you had to be perfect at everything? So know
what you like. Make it a point to really learn your "likes".
Then commit to doing and having more of those.
Next, discover what you don't like. Commit to eliminating those
and then preventing them from entering your life. Make a pact
with yourself not to violate this new set of rules that provides
you with such powerful peace of mind. I guarantee you will feel
much more in control and relaxed. Be polite, but be adamant that
no one will get past this protective wall by imposing their
rules on you.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Food Poisoning Again
I’m back again on that food poisoning issue. Whether it is
right or wrong, at this point, doesn’t matter. The fact is
the peanut butter salmonella issue is a huge signal. Take a
look at this report on the web -
http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/state/070311genetics.
html
The thing that gets me is that superbugs can get out so
easily and from trusted sources it presents a picture of the
whole world being vulnerable.
The world is vulnerable. What would happen if a person with
TB and another with an ebola disease got on an airplane in
Africa and flew to Heathrow in London. Say another person
with Bird Flu and one with SARS got on a plane in Hong Kong
and it, too, flew into Heathrow. Along the way all these
people coughed several times within the aircraft. At Gatwig
they had a four to six hour wait for their next flight and
all the while they were coughing. Can you see it?
Within one day all these diseases could be spread around the
world and be well on their virulent way to creating
epidemics if not pandemics. That’s just how easy it is for
things to get out of hand.
Or have salmonella outbreaks from six or eight different
foods at once. Or have flea infested rats (bubonic plague)
become more active and mobile in warmer climes created by
global warming. The world is vulnerable to all these things.
One matter most of us don’t think about is the fact that
these things can happen simultaneous with other things like
a huge natural disaster in a populated area, or a
particularly precipitous war.
Yes, the world is a vulnerable place.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Take the Cake: Where did we get the expression "that takes
the cake"?
From the competitive cakewalk. This dance originated among
the Negroes of the South - and got its name from the fact
that at barbecues, picnics, and box suppers a strutting
contest was held among the men. The man who cut the best
capers in "strutting his stuff" was given his choice of
cakes - and along with the cake went the girl who baked it
as a partner for the meal.

HA! HA! HA!
A new pastor moved into town and went out one Saturday to
visit his parishioners. All went well until he came to one
house. It was obvious that someone was home, but no one came
to the door even after he had knocked several times.
Finally, he took out his card, wrote on the back "Revelation
3:20" and stuck it in the door.
The next day, as he was counting the offering he found his
card in the collection plate. Below his message was a
notation "Genesis 3:10".
Revelation 3:20 reads: "Behold, I stand at the door and
knock. If any man hear my voice, and opens the door, I will
come in to him, and will dine with him, and he will with
me."
Genesis 3:10 reads: "And he said, I heard thy voice in the
garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked."
