TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Is it true that Canadians participated in the US Civil War?
Why?
Has the US ever provided a haven for Canadian draft dodgers?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is "kuru"?
"Kuru" is the name given by the Fore people of Papua New
Guinea to a strange affliction that caused victims to suffer
from slurred speech and tremors, walk unsteadily, and
finally fall into a stupor that led to death. The illness,
which the Fore attributed to sorcery, affected mostly women
and children. An American pediatrician and virologist sent
to study the disease in the 1950s soon found out why. Dr.
Carleton Gajdusek suspected kuru was an epidemic disease
related to the eating habits of Fore women and children.
Because they received less protein than Fore men, they had
created a ritual to provide more: they ate dead tribe
members instead of burying them. This cannibalism was
unfortunate, because kuru turned out to be one of the
transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. When the women
and kids ate the brains of their diseased relatives, they
were also ingesting the infectious prions that caused kuru.
What were "skedaddlers" in the nineteenth century?
"Skedaddlers" were US men who crossed over into Canada
during the Civil War to avoid being drafted. Draft dodging
was especially prevalent among men living in states
bordering Canada, such as New York, New Hampshire, Maine,
Minnesota, and Wisconsin. So many skedaddlers settled in a
place in New Brunswick that the area soon acquired the name
"Skedaddle Ridge." Following the Civil War, in 1864, an
amnesty proclamation enabled many skedaddlers to return home
to the US without facing punishment.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
------------------------------------
You And The Brass Ring
Your goals usually reflect positive changes you wish to make
in yourself, your condition, your health, your wealth or
your relationships. They often simultaneously fill you with
the hope of life being different, and empty you with the
familiarity of it remaining the same! You set out to make
these positive changes with good intention, and, all too
often, you're soon soothing yourself with good reasons why
you are off track. Sound familiar?
Maybe you have used some of these logical-sounding phrases
to trick yourself into complacency: "It's too hard." "My
knees cannot take this." "It takes too much time." "My
husband/wife/children/dog/mother did not like me doing it."
"I'm too busy." "It takes too much energy that I need for
my job." "It costs too much." "It's too late to teach an
old dog new tricks." If not these ones, you may have some
tried and true ones of your very own!
In most cases, the goals were chosen to help you reach a
vision you held of better health, a greater sense of
well-being, healthier relationships with yourself and
others, as well as with time, money energy and success. So,
if you gave up the goal, what does it leave you with? Well,
for one thing, it leaves you with a life you recognize very
well. Is that alright with you?
What prevents you from being on your own team and stepping
up to bat with high intention, ready to skilfully hit the
ball to your personal best? What happens to you inside when
you don't stick with the program? Are you disappointed in
yourself, angry at yourself, or, maybe, relieved? Why do you
choose not to keep your commitments to yourself?
You have all the information you need to know that a change
in your life would be desirable. You may admire people who
have made those changes. So, what's missing from your
personal formula for success? What keeps you and the brass
ring at more than arm's length?
Let's look at a very common goal: to implement an exercise
program you can stick with. For some folks, the only
exercise they get is pushing their luck or raising their
eyebrows. It is likely, though, that most of you would like
to do better than that.
Ask yourself a few questions about your goal. Why do you
want to have an exercise program? You might say, "So I can
be healthier." Great! So, why do you want to be healthier?
"To have more energy, lose weight, sleep less, look younger,
and probably live longer." Wow! Those sound like compelling
reasons!
Next question: What would your life be like if you had more
energy, weighed less, slept less, looked younger and lived
longer? Well, one thing is for sure: Your life would change.
Are you ready for that change? What are the trade-offs
between your present lifestyle and your new one? What will
you gain? (No pun intended) What might you lose? What would
you not have time for if you implemented this program? How
would you feel if you gave up this goal entirely and never,
ever thought about it again? Is that acceptable to you?
Next to final question: Would achieving this goal give you a
deep sense of satisfaction and contentment within yourself?
Final question: Do you deserve to feel that good? If the
answer is a resounding "Yes!", then go for it! If the answer
is a resolute, "No!", then lie back down, replenish your
chocolate supply and lie still until the inclination to
exercise passes!
I'm sure you are getting the idea. Unless something is
deeply important to you AND you feel you deserve to have it,
the odds are against you. On the other hand, if it IS
important to you and you do deserve to have it, AND you
focus your time, energy, skills and resources on the goal,
you are almost certain to achieve it.
To catch the brass ring, you have to be willing to stretch!
Are you?

Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 4 of 5
Let me give you an example of someone who had never made
this kind of commitment with himself. A gentleman called me
a few days ago. Following a few questions, it became
apparent that he felt victimized by advertising and large
corporations. He felt they needed to be punished for making
him less than healthy. I asked if someone had come to his
house and forced him to go to eating-places he didn't want
to visit. I asked if someone had also forced him to eat this
type of food. I then asked if someone forced him to watch
commercials or read magazine ads? He felt "we" were
completely educated to think this was the healthiest and
only way to eat. Nothing I suggested changed his thinking.
Nothing was his fault. It was all the responsibility of the
advertisers that he now was overweight and couldn't feel
healthy. He assumed no responsibility for reading and
following advertisers' suggestions. I wanted to help him
understand his symptoms and why he had them and what he
might do to reverse them. I wanted to give him some
information that would allow him to take back control over
himself with his food intakes and his physical needs. He
wasn't in the least receptive. Here is a grown man, feeling
completely at the mercy of others. But he will continue to
allow it to happen. And he didn't appreciate that only HE
could make any changes.
I find it amazing to think our world is so influenced and
controlled, and we allow it! You know that most of the
headlines are negative. Some are positive. And many are
sensational and more of an annoyance than a help. It's not a
secret that bad news sells: good news does not. So here is
how your filtering system would help you. Decide what you
will tolerate and what you want (and it's never too late to
do this "research".) Don't make these decisions lightly but
really believe they will allow you to have a protective zone
by which all things are screened before they come to you.
This really helps you to feel in control.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Global Scene Shows Different Picture
As I read through my particular news sources I tend to read
a lot. I do this because I do not want to get burdened down
with what one story says but instead I seek the global
picture.
I have found that one story may look good or bad, but the
preponderance of stories has a tendency to show you what is
really going on.
Today I have been impressed with two things. First, there is
an insane number of biofuel plants being built, in the
planning stages or already operational. The total is
staggering. Second and this is a signal as far as I am
concerned, all the major oil companies are thinking of
getting into nuclear energy.
On the first point, biofuels, I see a headlong rush into the
field without sufficient testing, studying and research. It
will change our economies around, which may be good for
farmers and oil companies - for a short while. Given that we
will need all available arable land for growing food I am
not sure biofuels will live much past a short spurt. We’ll
see.
On the matter of oil companies into nuclear energy I see
that as a harbinger of falling fuel production. The oil
companies know they will be unable to supply the world’s
needs both as a result of depleting reserves and growing
demands. Their way of keeping their shareholders happy is to
get into energy fields where they can make steady money.
Nuclear energy appears to be their choice. I wonder if
anyone has told them there is also a depleting supply of
uranium?

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Umbrage: what is the reason we say a person who takes
offense takes "umbrage"?
The word "umbrage" comes from the Latin umbra, meaning
"shadow". A shadow is a "dark picture" - "a gloomy view", as
it were - and a person who takes umbrage "believes the
worst".

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
Everybody has barriers and obstacles. If you look at
them as containing fences that don't allow you to
advance, then you're going to be a failure. If you look
at them as hurdles that strengthen you each time you go
over one, then you're going to be a success.

HA! HA! HA!
Little Johnny and Jenny are only 10 years old, but they just
know that they are in love. One day they decide that they
want to get married, so Johnny goes to Jenny's father to ask
him for her hand.
Johnny bravely walks up to him and says "Mr. Smith, me and
Jenny are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in
marriage."
Thinking that this was the cutest thing, Mr. Smith replies,
"Well Johnny, you are only 10. Where will you two live?"
Without even taking a moment to think about it Johnny
replies, "In Jenny's room. It's bigger than mine and we can
both fit there nicely."
Still thinking this is just adorable, Mr. Smith says with a
huge grin, "Okay then how will you live? You' re not old
enough to get a job. You'll need to support Jenny." Again,
Johnny instantly replies, "Our allowance...Jenny makes 5
bucks a week and I make 1 0 bucks a week. That's about 60
bucks! a month, and that should do us just fine."
By this time Mr. Smith is a little shocked that Johnny has
put so much thought into this. So, he thinks for a moment
trying to come up with something that Johnny won't have an
answer to. After a second, Mr. Smith says, "Well Johnny, it
seems like you have got everything all figured out. I just
have one more question for you. What will you do if the two
of you should have little ones of your own?" J
ohnny just shrugs his shoulders and says "Well, we 've been
lucky so far..."
