TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

-----------------------

Is it true that Canada once had a plan to invade the US?

Why do earthquakes in other countries seem to cause more
casualties and damage than quakes in the US?

--------------

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Is it true that Canadians participated in the US Civil War?
Why?

Yes, thousands did. Some were substitutes for US soldiers,
some had friends in the US they sought to defend, and some
happened to be living in US territory when the war broke
out. It's estimated that 50,000 Canadians fought in the
Civil War. The vast majority fought for Union forces in the
North, but several hundred enlisted to defend the South.
Many Canadians who fought in the war were soldiers of
fortune who were substituting themselves for a fee to US men
who didn't want to fight. At that time, a proviso in the
draft legislation stated that a citizen could avoid the
draft if he could provide a substitute.

Has the US ever provided a haven for Canadian draft dodgers?

The skedaddling goes both ways. During World War I, the US
provided a haven for Canadians who didn't want to fight
overseas. That ended, of course, in 1917 when the US itself
entered the war.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!

Approximately 74% of Americans celebrate Valentine's Day.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Consistently Insist on Persisting!

A policeman pulls over a driver for swerving in and out of
lanes on the highway. He tells the guy to blow a breath
into a breathalyzer.

"I can't do that, officer."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm an asthmatic. I could get an asthma attack
if I blow into that tube."

"Okay, we'll just get a urine sample down at the station."

"Can't do that either, officer."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm a diabetic. I could get low blood sugar if
I pee in a cup."

"Alright, we could get a blood sample."

"Can't do that either, officer."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm a hemophiliac. If I give blood I could die."

"Fine then, just walk this white line."

"Can't do that either, officer."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm drunk."

The police officer was clearly going to get his job done.
Notice how he persisted. Finally he got to the bottom of
the issue. It might also be noted the drunk was pretty
persistent as well. He just ran out of answers.

Most folks don't realize the value of persistence. Poor is
the man who knows not it's value. It is only by keeping
on that we achieve. Those who want instant gratification
are those who end up followers, not leaders. The leader
is one who recognizes the value of persisting, of daily
trying to achieve, of planning the work and working the
plan.

One must decide what one is going to do. Adopting the
attitude of persistence will certainly bring on the success
for which one is looking. I read the other day a saying by
one of America's success teachers. He said that "Success
must be paid for, in full, in advance." He's right. Until
you pay that price, and that takes persistence, success will
elude you. There is no other way. Winning a lottery
is not success.

So make your choices. To consistently insist on
persisting is a formula that will cause you to achieve
your objective.

Consistently Insist on Persisting!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 5 of 5

Don't doubt your own knowledge. If you do need to scan the
headline, ask yourself if this could be an area you are not
confident in. Will it question your own convictions? Does it
jostle your common sense? Nowadays some headlines do start your
heart racing. I have noticed a very interesting change in the
use of health care professionals and resources. People are not
going to their doctor's office for professional advice before
they "search" the Internet. Most of the time, they will already
have done a lot of research and are quite prepared with
knowledgeable, intelligent questions and quite a bit of
understanding. They will probably already have checked out all
signs and symptoms. Clinics are used for emergent situations:
not details of conditions. People find it's much quicker and
easier to go to health food stores, the Internet, or bookstores
than to book a doctor's office appointment. You probably do much
the same. You look up key words or phrases on Google or yahoo
find some information. And then get on with your life. But if
the headline jumps out at you, and you are fearful of maybe not
doing the right thing, you could panic. Don't. Your doctor will
have to make the final diagnosis and they will give you some
helpful and practical choices. But don't allow yourself to be
affected by the headlines. If it's an issue, deal with it, but
you are in a grocery store: not a medical facility.

Know your interests. Know your parameters (what you will allow
and what you will exclude). Stay focussed. It is the purpose of
the publication to entice you with sometimes outrageous
headlines. It is your responsibility to filter out the offer.
And the filtering mechanism can be very helpful because you
already know your interests. You have agreed not to work hard on
your dislikes. Be open-minded, but constantly guard your time
and your energy on dead-end distractions using this filter
system. Stay committed and focussed on your specific area of
interest. Ask yourself it this information "fits" your
lifestyle. If not, ignore it. If it does, read the headline, and
put the idea aside for now. Let this percolate. Opportunities
for more detailed study will definitely arise. But pay
attention to how you feel. Are you anxious? Stressed and
irritated? There is nothing in that information that can harm
you except what you allow it to.

The irony of all these headlines is what you learn today, may be
disputed a while in the near future. If you don't keep up
research findings, you could well be happily going with the
original and maybe outdated information. Has this all raised
your anxiety level just a little? Hopefully not. Make sure your
filters are firmly in place. Commit to using them. De-clutter
your mind of information. We have an immense amount of it coming
at us constantly. You must find a buffer yourself. The peace and
comfort you receive will guide and focus you with confidence and
determination. Stress surrounds us at every turn: at work, at
home, in the community. Having the ability to filter out
unwanted information allows you to be in control of your health:
your life. Guard this jealously.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

Order, Harmony and Balance

As you have all gleaned by now I am no expert - on anything.
I am merely a simple soul born to observe what goes on
around the world.

It is a fascinating task really. It permits me to see all
the foibles of man.

I have long been told that Mother Nature will not tolerate
man’s greed and avarice. I have been told that greed and
avarice ends up in harming the earth, harming people in its
unequal compensation and particularly develops a cultish
uncaring for the poor as people. In other words there is no
longer a “neighborliness” about the world, instead a
“grabbiness”.

One thing I learned a very long time ago is that in all
things there must be order, harmony and balance. Those are
the watchwords of nature.

In man’s world presently there are none of those things and
man’s government of earth is leading him into further chaos
and misery.

In a very real sense these things are abhorred by nature and
will be “reset to default”.

What do I mean by “nature” in the above? The laws that
govern the entire universe are also set to apply to the
least among us. The simple law that “what you give is what
you get” or “your chickens will come home to roost”, or
“what goes around, comes around” are a law mankind has
shown, over and over again, works.

That’s right the very simple law “As ye give, so shall ye
receive.” can and will have an impact globally. In truth,
global warming, if there is such a thing, will have no
significant effect on man. What will have an effect, and is
already, is man’s - reaction - to what he perceives as
global warming. And the signs bear this out - that
“reaction” is being controlled by the greedy who see much
money to be had by manipulating public opinion. A simple
look at the billions of dollars already spent or earmarked
for biofuels is sufficient to support the point.

We will have a difficult time balancing the “need for fuel”
versus the “need for food” and the poor will be overlooked
in either case. To wit: all of Africa is being told not to
think about nuclear power generating stations, even fossil
fuel fired generating stations. They are being told by all
money sources to get into solar power, wind power and all
the new technologies. Even a grade one student knows that
solar power cannot and will not provide all the power
needed. Neither will wind power be able to help. And, get
this, the poorest of all the world’s countries are being
asked to go for the most expensive and least capable
technologies. Anybody want to bet the world bank is looking
for a place to make loans and garner much interest from
investments at the cost of the poor?

Anybody out there who doesn’t think this is a situation out
of balance, out of order, out of harmony with the law?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Vandal: What is the reason a person who needlessly destroys
property is called a "vandal"?

The term gets its meaning from a Teutonic tribe. In 455 A.D.
Genseric and his "Vandal" hordes captured Rome and mutilated
the public monuments of the city without regard to their
worth or beauty.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Outdoor Barbecuing It's the only type of cooking a "real"
man will do. When a man volunteers to do such cooking, the
following chain of events is put into motion.

 1.  The woman goes to the store.
 2.  The woman fixes the salad, vegetables and dessert.
 3.  The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a
tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it
to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, drinking a
beer.
 4.  The man places the meat on the grill.
 5.  The woman goes inside to set the table and check the
vegetables.
 6.  The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is
burning.
 7.  The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to
the woman. (insert smug expression and "isn't that steak a
beaut!")
 8.  The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the
table.
 9.  After eating, the woman clears the table and does the
dishes.
10.  The mans ask the woman how she enjoyed "her night off".
And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that
there's just no pleasing some women.
