ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Is it true that Canada once had a plan to invade the US?

Yes, but then the US also had a plan to invade Canada. Both
plans were hypothetical and neither was ever put into
action. Canada's plan was drafted by James Sutherland Brown,
the country's director of Military Operations and
Intelligence at Canadian army headquarters in the 1920s.
Brown's "Defense Scheme Number 1" would have had Canadian
troops traveling southward into the US to capture such "key"
bases as Minneapolis and Seattle. It was hoped that if the
need to invade the US arose, the British Army would help
Canada out. Canada had a fear of invasion from the US all
the way up to the twentieth century - with good reason,
apparently. The US supposedly had a "Strategic Plan Red" to
capture Canada, also in the 1920s.

Why do earthquakes in other countries seem to cause more
casualties and damage than quakes in the US?

Damage and deaths from quakes are directly related to the
safety of the buildings and structures in the area. The
greater damage and deaths in other nations can be partly
blamed on poorly designed buildings. Population density also
plays a major role. The more people living in an earthquake
area, the higher the casualties.

Palestinian factions agree on unity government
Last Updated: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 | 12:54 PM ET
CBC News

A unity government with members from rivals Hamas and Fatah
will be presented to the Palestinian parliament for approval
Saturday, officials said Wednesday.

It is not yet known who will occupy key cabinet positions,
including the minister of the interior, who controls
security. However, under the agreement reached in early
February, Hamas would dominate, holding nine posts to
Fatah's six. Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will keep
his job.

The unity government is an effort to ease Western
restrictions on aid to the Palestinians, introduced after
Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January 2006.

Aid was stopped because Hamas rejected three international
demands: acknowledge Israel's right to exist; renounce
violence; and accept previous steps toward peace with
Israel.

The Hamas-Fatah deal says the new government will respect
previous peace deals with Israel.

President Mahmoud Abbas, from Fatah, has been pushing for
the unity government, both to restart the flow of aid and to
end the warfare between Hamas and Fatah, which left at least
80 dead from fighting early this year.

He has told the U.S. that the accord was the best that could
be negotiated, but it's not clear whether the new government
will be acceptable to the U.S. and other countries that have
given the Palestinians aid in the past.

The U.S. has said it will not respond until it sees the new
government's policies. That may happen as soon as next week
when U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to
visit the area.

The Hamas-led Palestinian Authority government resigned in
February to make room for the new coalition.

A formal announcement about the unity government is expected
Wednesday, after Abbas and Haniyeh conclude their talks.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 1 of 9

Recently I came across a picture of a health care worker taking
a motorist's temperature via a hand held temperature device.
This led me to ponder what a person needs to know in order to
protect themselves from being unwittingly exposed to infectious
elements.

There are many unrecognized and potentially-infectious
situations. Many times you are exposed to them and don't even
know it. But if you suspect something, your choices are to be
proactive or to be reactive. Prevention or treatment. Personally
I think prevention is healthier, less painful and more cost
effective.

To keep from getting ill, you may want to take some preventative
measures. You will need to recognize a possible risk. And if you
are exposed you would want to know how you could protect
yourself and keep from getting sick. To start this learning
process, you need to know what is in place right now to protect
you.

Your body has a very sophisticated protective system, including
a immune system and inflammatory processes, plus many other
functions that protect you "behind the scenes".

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

One Miscue Will Do It

I find myself fascinated by the present stock market
activities. They appear on a downward trend and are that way
on a worldly basis. I wonder what is happening?

For a very long while now I have been thinking the U.S.
economy has been on an unbelievably wild spending spree. I
know not where the money is coming from but I do know who
will pay the bill.

I guess what I am saying is I have believed for a long time
now that sooner or later the world will begin to lose faith
in the American dollar and begin to ask for payment for the
trade deficit. If that happens it will clearly be a prelude
to a depression of horrific proportions.

The world cannot go on as it is. The economic system is a
house of cards just waiting for a kid with a stick to come
along. One miscue, one mistake, one temper tantrum or
emotional reaction by some leader of some country and things
could come tumbling down. One hiccup and the world will be
plunged into a depression that will make the “dirty 30s”
look like a picnic.

One of the problems with a worldwide depression today is
that we have more than double the number of people than we
had in the 1930s. Such a depression now will literally kill
millions of people, possibly billions.

None of us really know who controls the world’s purse
strings. All of us have heard stories and like to think we
know. That, of course, is really not a problem but what is a
problem is - do those who hold the purse strings know what
they are doing?

Again, I am no expert - only an observer, yet from what I
see we are heading to an uncontrollable economic fiasco that
will affect everyone on the face of the planet.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Wampum: Where did "wampum" get its name?

"Wampum" is an Algonquian Indian word, meaning "white
string". There were two types of Indian bead money - white
and black (or purple). the "white" was the more valuable.

HA! HA! HA!

Cold Winter?????

The Indians asked their Chief in the autumn if the winter
was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing the answer,
the Chief replied that the winter was going to be cold and
the members of the village were to collect wood to be
prepared.

Being a good leader, he went to the next phone booth and
called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is this
winter going to be cold?"

The man on the phone responded, "This winter will be quite
cold indeed."

So the Chief went back to his people to speed up the
collection of wood to be prepared.

A week later he called the National Weather Service again.
"Is it going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes", the man replied, "It's going to be a very cold
winter".

So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to find
every scrap of wood they can find.

Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again.
"Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very
cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replies, "the Indians are collecting
wood like crazy!"'
