TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Can animals predict earthquakes? Can humans?

Is there earthquake weather?

--------------
ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Where in the world am I least likely to experience an
earthquake?

Antarctica has the least earthquakes of any continent. Most
people don't really like the ice and wind, though. There is
no place on Earth COMPLETELY safe from earthquakes. Small
earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world. In the United
States, you're safest in Florida and North Dakota, which
have the smallest number of earthquakes. Alaska and
California have the most. The most DAMAGING ones in the US
have been in California.

If I'm in the house during an earthquake, should I run for
the door?

ONLY if you live in an old, unreinforced adobe house. Most
modern homes do not have doorways that are stronger than
other parts of the house. You're much safer taking cover
under a heavy piece of furniture or against an inside wall
and holding on. In fact, according to FEMA (Federal
Emergency Management Agency), the most dangerous thing to do
during the shaking of an earthquake is to try to leave the
building because objects can fall on you. If you're outdoors
already when a quake strikes, you should move into the open,
away from buildings, street lights, and utility wires. If
you're in your car, stop carefully and stay inside the
vehicle. Make sure you've moved to a clear area away from
buildings, trees, overpasses, or wires. When you start
driving again, stay away from bridges or ramps that might
have been damaged by the quake and look out for breaks in
the pavement.

Pet Food Recall Grows Along with Owner Worry
More Brand Names Added to Already Long List

By PATRICIA MARTELL, MAGGIE HOPF and LINDSAY HAMILTON

March 18, 2007 — Additional brand names have been added to
the list of possibly tainted pet food brands that are the
subject of a recall.

On Friday, Menu Foods, whose products are sold throughout
North America, issued a recall for 60 million cans and
pouches of certain "cuts and gravy"-style dog and cat food
products. Seven more brands have been added to the original
list.

Because Menu Foods co-manufactures so many products,
veterinarians are urging pet owners to keep tabs on the
latest developments.

"It's very possible other companies will have to add to this
recall," said Dr. Louise Murray, director of medicine for
the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals. "People need to keep updating themselves."
(For a list of recalled pet food brands visit
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/)

Pet Owners React

At least 10 pet deaths have been linked to the recall, and
the affected food may have contributed to kidney failure in
many other cats and dogs.

"It makes me feel terrible," said Jackie as she walked her
poodle Muffin in Manhattan. "It's just like with a child."
John, owner of Wrigley the beagle, said he logged on to
check the food list as soon as he heard about the recall.
"There are like 40 brands on there," John said, "but she's
good."

Dr. Ed Loebach, a medical advisor and veterinarian with
Banfield Animal Hospitals, said kidney failure can come on
quickly, or take a long period of time. He said pet owners
should look out for symptoms such as "an increased water
intake, increased volumes of urination, unwillingness to
eat, vomiting and lethargy. If they see any of those signs,
they should take their pet to the veterinarian as soon as
they can."

Some pet owners' efforts to learn about the recall proved
futile. Menu Foods set up two hotline numbers for customers
to call, but repeated calls from ABC News only resulted in a
busy signal. A company spokeswoman said they added more
lines, but that traffic remained high.

Retailers' Empty Shelves

Since Friday, pet food retailers have been stripping their
shelves of the recalled food.

PETCO spokesman Kevin Whalen said PETCO stores removed foods
that weren't on the list, to be "extra careful."

"If it was even possible that certain pet food would be
involved, we wanted to be safe," he said Sunday. "Hopefully,
with new information on the recall, we can start putting the
pet food back on the shelves tomorrow."

Waiting for Answers

A Menu Foods spokeswoman said the company is "diligently
testing" its products, but as of yet cannot point to the
source of the problem.

Veterinarians note that kidney failure is a common ailment
of pets, especially cats. It's among the top killers of
older cats, so the full scope of the pet food problem might
be difficult to pinpoint.

"Most older cats are living with some degree of compromised
kidney function," Dr. Murray of the ASPCA said. "I think
there's going to be a lot of confusion and a little bit of
panic because there might be kidney failure that their
owners are unaware of."

For now, pet owners need to check the list, check their
food, and keep an eye on their pets.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 2 of 9

First I'll outline some "internal matters" and then follow with
some external ones. This will include the cycle of infection and
how to recognize what is coming at you. If you don't recognize
the risk, you are at its mercy. As always, this information is
an overview and is for educational purposes. I would encourage
you to do a lot of research because this subject is not only
very involved but vitally important and your well being.

It goes without saying that a healthy body is your first and
most important line of defense. It is your best protection. Your
body's main area of defense is the immune system. We often hear
about our immune system in terms of being improved by certain
vitamins. But in actual fact your immune system is very complex
and performs many different functions. A few individual vitamins
will not fill all its requirements. A strong immune system will
keep you healthy for a long time. But once it has exhausted its
supply of nutrients and can't borrow any more from any part of
its system, things start to breakdown. It also stands to reason
that the more you look after it, and the less you give it to
"correct" or render harmless, the longer it will serve you.

In this article we are going to focus on infections as we are
faced with many unknowns. You simply can't live your life in
isolation from the rest of the world...and it's that collective
"world" that gives us the unhealthy problems. (However I do
know of people who tiptoe through life hoping they will get to
the other end without too much trouble!)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

More Recalls?

It is sad for me to think about this pet food recall that is
going on. It is another example of manufacturing laziness
and greed. It costs money to put in quality control systems.

What bothers me most about this thing is that it came on the
tail end of five major recalls of food humans eat. In other
words it appears to be more of a trend than what we care to
think about.

I notice, too, while traveling, that not all restaurants
put out the best food. I happen to be a friend of a
parliamentarian who is close to our health minister in the
province in Canada, where I live. He tells me food poisoning
from food consumed at public places is far more prevalent
than what we think.

I have indicated to you I am writing a book on global
warming. At least that is how it started out. I soon found
global warming is the least of man’s troubles. Superbugs are
a huge threat looming on the horizon. Medical people are not
now speaking as if bird flu can be contained. They KNOW it
is coming and they are scurrying to come up with the right
vaccinations.

I think this bad food thing will get out of hand in epidemic
proportions, too. It is happening too often in too many
places. I wish I was wrong but as I survey the whole scene I
see much trouble ahead - and a lot of it will be to do with
our food supply.

Think on these thoughts, folks. I’ll see you tomorrow.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Yankee Dime: Why do we call a kiss a "yankee dime"?

This name for a kiss has its origin in our habit of
attributing to other sections of the country such behavior
and characteristics as we do not especially approve of.
"Yankees" were said to be so thrifty that they would rather
pay for something with a kiss than with a "coin". A kiss is
also called a "Quaker fip" (that is a five cent piece) for
the sam reason.

HA! HA! HA!

A husband leaves the house to go pick up dinner for he and
his wife. Shortly after leaving, the doorbell rings.

It is her husbands best friend and she invites him in. Since
she is in her bathrobe the man says to her "you have the
nicest breasts". She says "thanks but my husband would be
mad if he heard you".

He replies "I would pay you $10 just to see one of them".
She thinks for a minute and decides to do it.

He says "Wow that is the most perfect breast I ever saw....I
will give you another $10 if you show me both at the same
time".

She does it, and he gives her the money. The friend leaves
and her husband comes home. She says "your best friend just
stopped by". He answers "Great did he leave the $20 he owed
me"
