Can the ground open up during an earthquake?
An earthquake can cause shallow crevices to form, thanks to
the action of landslides and lateral spread. But, no, faults
do NOT open up to swallow people (as some of us more
imaginative souls might guess). Movement occurs along the
plane of a fault, not perpendicular to it. If faults DID
open up, no earthquake would happen because there would be
no friction to lock them together.
Will California eventually fall into the ocean?
The people in Nevada might like that, so they can get a
better view of the Pacific Ocean, but California is NOT
going to slide into the ocean. The San Andreas Fault system,
which crosses California, is the boundary between the
Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. Earthquakes on
the San Andreas Fault are a result of the slow movement of
the Pacific Plate northwest with respect to the North
American Plate. However, the plates are moving horizontally
past each other, so California is not going to go off
sailing. However, one day (a VERY VERY long time from now),
Los Angeles and San Francisco will be adjacent to one
another.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
------------------------------------
Spreading Light
In any circumstance you can be the one to spread light. It
comes from your decision within. You choose what you show to
the world, don't you? You also choose what you reflect. You
are powerful.
A while ago, I spent a wonderful afternoon with a new friend
who lives part of each year in India. As I showed him my
photos of India, I remembered the wonder I felt when I was
in the large fort outside Jaipur. This palace has a bed
chamber which was decorated for the master of the house. The
tour guide had us come into that room and close the doors.
He lighted a candle, just one candle, and the room was
filled with light. How? The room had thousands of tiny
mirrors embedded in the plaster. What a demonstration of
reflected light!
The well-known author, Edith Wharton, who seemingly knew all
about this wrote, "There are two ways of spreading light; to
be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." Both are
valuable and needed. In many cases you must make a choice
between two attractive alternatives. Today you need not
choose between them. You can do both. You can be a light,
AND, you can reflect the light you see in others--the
goodness, the beauty, the growth, the love--all that is
positive! Celebrate it!
Keep beautiful candles around you. Have a special one where
you sit to think, meditate or pray. Each time you light it
let it be a reminder of your desire to keep your own light
shining and your mirror reflecting all that is beautiful to
you every day. Choose that candle now!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 4 of 9
Viruses cause more systemic problems and may affect the liver
and the overall body. Examples would be shingles, hepatitis, and
AIDS. Fungi invade the skin and mucous membranes. (They love the
warm moist atmosphere!) Examples of common fungal infections are
athletes foot, thrush, Valley Fever, vaginitis. Protozoa are
relatively infrequent invaders to many people, but when they
occur, they cause a lot of damage. They are found mostly in
water supplies but they also occur in the digestive tracts of
some animals. And these can be directly transmitted to humans.
An example of a water-borne protozoan infection is Giardiasis.
An example of a digestive invader infection is
Cryptosporidiosis. Most of us are exposed unwittingly or unknowingly,
so you only become aware of a problem when symptoms appear.
How can you prevent them from affecting you negatively. What do
you look for?
Let's look at a cycle of infection. It is important to note that
although it SEEMS hopeless, you do have a lot of control. You
can take preventative measures once you recognize that you may
have come in contact with the "invader". At each step of this
cycle there is an opportunity for you to halt the spread of
microorganisms. And that will most likely prevent further
infectious spread to others. But it does require some action on
your part. First of all you won't know what to do if you don't
recognize the "risk". So become aware of high-risk areas. They
would include schools, offices, public places, and medical
clinics (very obvious) to name just few. Be aware of any place
where people gather and the microorganisms can go from person to
person quickly. And remember that air currents and body heat
make this even easier to spread. (All I'm doing now is raising
your awareness levels.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

The U.S. Will Invade Iran
Of late I have read many articles on whether the U.S. will
go to war with Iran.
There appears to be great debate over the issue, with most
of the populace saying no to the idea. However, mainstream
citizens are not fully aware of what is going on. Any idea
to invade Iran will, publicly, be tied to the idea that Iran
is wanting to develop nuclear weapons. It is absolutely true
the idea of invasion will be tied to this concept, whether
the concept is true or not.
That, however, is not the reason the U.S. would invade Iran.
The world’s traditional supply of oil is peaking. That is to
say that within 10 years traditional oilfields will have
peaked and oil production will be down. A drop of as little
as 10 percent will literally bankrupt most of the worlds
economies.
In my opinion there is no doubt the U.S. will invade Iran
and will ultimately do the same there as they have just done
in Iraq, to wit: cause an act of a new parliament to give
complete control of Iran’s oil and gas production to U.S.
companies without any further input by the country.
The U.S. is attempting to gain control of as much oil as is
possible so it can “wean” itself from dependence on oil.
Note, I said dependence on oil, not dependence on “foreign”
oil. The U.S. is hoping that by gaining control of
sufficient oil it can gently lower its need while
simultaneously developing other sources of energy.
As at this moment there is no replacement for oil, not even
if it were just used for energy. All other sources of energy
combined will not come close to replacing even 30 percent of
America’s demand. And note here again, oil is not used just
for energy. Without oil you have no plastics, you have
reduced your medicines by possibly 60 percent and you
dramatically affect the amount of heat and electricity you
can have.
So, yes, the U.S. will invade Iran.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Back and Fill: Why do we say an indecisive person is
"backing and filling"?
The term refers to a method of tacking a sailing ship when
the tide is with the vessel and the wind against it - in
which the ship moves ahead slowly by fits and starts. the
sails are allowed to "fill" with wind and then the wind is
spilled from them by hauling "back" on the stays.

IMMORTAL LINES FROM MEMORABLE CHURCH BULLETINS ...
The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.
The sermon this morning: "Jesus Walks on the Water." The
sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus."
Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get
rid of those things not worth keeping around the house.
Bring your husbands.
Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.
Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone
who doesn't care much about you.
Don't let worry kill you off -- let the Church help.
Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again,"
giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
For those of you who have children and don't know it, we
have a nursery downstairs.
Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They
need all the help they can get.
Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24
in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their
school days.
A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church
hall. Music will follow.
At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be
"What is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir
practice.
