What date does Mardi Gras fall on?

Because of its connection to Easter, Mardi Gras falls on a
different date each year. It can occur on any Tuesday from
February 3 through March 9. (Easter can fall on any Sunday
from March 23 to April 25. Its exact date is set to coincide
with the first Sunday after the full moon that follows the
Spring equinox.) Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter
(the forty days of Lent, plus seven Sundays). Mardi Gras
THIS year is today, March 4.

What pagan celebrations influenced Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras has its roots in Saturnalia, an ancient Roman
celebration in honor of the king Saturnus, and Bacchanalia,
a celebration in honor of Bacchus, the god of wine and
fertility.

Do You Blame Others For Your Circumstances?

PSALM 2004:
The politician is my shepherd. I'm in want.
He maketh me lie down on park benches.
He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He disturbeth my soul.
Yes, though I walk through the valley of
The shadow of depression and recession,
I anticipate no recovery, for he is with me.
He prepareth a reduction in my salary in
The presence of my enemies.
He anointed my small income with great losses.
My expenses runneth over.
Surely unemployment and poverty shall
Follow me all the days of my life
And I shall dwell in a mortgaged house forever.

Oh, how nice, how wonderful it is to blame others for our
circumstances. It usually means, especially when we get
sympathy, that we no longer have to exert the effort to
overcome.

That is what happens when we begin to think others are
responsible for our mess. We think we can do nothing.
We get frustrated. So we settle for a beer with those who
will listen to our complaints and we stop trying to change
our condition.

How futile it is to take this route. It is self
perpetuating. The more you complain, the less you work, the
more you have to complain about. The circle just keeps
getting bigger and bigger.

It takes guts, and a sense of competition, to get out there
and prove yourself. Complaining will never get you
anything but problems.

I one watched the movie "G.I. Jane" with Demi Moore.
In the main I thought the show was rather brutal, yet it
did make one point that has remained with me since.

That point was "I never saw a wild thing feel sorry for
itself!" And that is true. Man is the only creature who
feels sorry for himself, who gripes, complains and stops
living.

A wild thing accepts all conditions as they are and deals
with them, without complaint or reservation. Once man
learns to do that he automatically has nothing more to
complain about and he changes his circumstances
dramatically. Think on that.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson

Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 8 of 9

So far, we have discussed respiratory bacteria but there is
another strong and very serious one that causes much grief.
Staph Aureus is another very harmful microorganism. It resides
on the skin naturally and it's perfectly acceptable there. But
when it invades your body, it causes all sorts of problems. It
is the most common infection found in hospitals and it tends to
transform itself ever so slightly, and thus become resistant to
some antibiotics. Why do we care about this agent? Because it is
a good example of a direct method of transmission or spread. It
is so easy to eliminate from your life by proper and frequent
handwashing.

A word about handwashing
You might want to ask yourself why hand washing so important.
Microorganisms can stay on (outside) your body for hours before
dying. If you have been exposed to something infectious, and
your skin is intact, all is well. Wash your hands and get rid of
it. That way you can't pass any potential infection indirectly
to anyone else. But suppose you now scrape or cut yourself and
still have this infectious agent on your arm. Chances are you
will see some sort of inflammation occur. And now your immune
system has to deal with both the trauma of the scrape and the
infection...unnecessarily. Incidentally, if you do have a
scrape, cover it up when out in public. That prevents any
further possible spread of your infection and you receiving
something unwanted in return.

It really puzzles me why people don't wash their hands often and
properly. In this day of international travel and communication,
there is no excuse for everyone NOT washing their hands after
using any toilet facilities, and that includes the "male" group.
You wash your hands before you eat so you don't eat the
invisible bugs that are "hanging out" there. Why would a person
not wash their hands AFTER they knowingly come in contact with
bugs after using the washroom facilities??? (I'll step off my
soapbox now.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Bird Flu Is Coming

Ever watch ads on television for colds and flu? They never
suggest “if” you get a cold. They always say “when”. The
continual bombardment of that absolute truth actually does
affect the television watcher. It convinces them they will
get a cold, that it is normal, that everybody gets colds
etc.

My point here is this - a couple years back when bird flu
first became apparent the communications from the Center for
Disease Control were such that it appeared as if man would
be able to contain it and keep it from mutating to man,
hence the slaughter of millions of birds. Yet, because of
wild bird populations they were unable to wipe out the flu
virus.

Well, guess what? The writings and communications from CDC
now have changed their “tone”. As far as the that group is
concerned now the virus will mutate and hit man - big time.

If you go to their site you will see information on what you
should to when this flu hits. It includes such things as
having a two week supply of food and water in the house. It
says be prepared to take your kids out of school.

They, the CDC, have plans for closing schools, public
buildings, public transportation systems and shutting down
the movement of people in all methods of travel.

Here is an excerpt from a government site on the matter -

Social Disruption May Be Widespread

• Plan for the possibility that usual services may be
disrupted. These could include services provided by
hospitals and other health care facilities, banks, stores,
restaurants, government offices, and post offices.

• Prepare backup plans in case public gatherings, such as
volunteer meetings and worship services, are canceled.

• Consider how to care for people with special needs in
case the services they rely on are not available.

Being Able to Work May Be Difficult or Impossible

• Find out if you can work from home.

• Ask your employer about how business will continue
during a pandemic. (A Business Pandemic Influenza Planning
Checklist is available at
www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/business/businesschecklist.html.)

• Plan for the possible reduction or loss of income if you
are unable to work or your place of employment is closed.

• Check with your employer or union about leave policies.

Schools May Be Closed for an Extended Period of Time

• Help schools plan for pandemic influenza. Talk to the
school nurse or the health center. Talk to your teachers,
administrators, and parent-teacher organizations.

• Plan home learning activities and exercises. Have
materials, such as books, on hand. Also plan recreational
activities that your children can do at home.

• Consider childcare needs.

Transportation Services May Be Disrupted

• Think about how you can rely less on public
transportation during a pandemic. For example, store food
and other essential supplies so you can make fewer trips to
the store.

• Prepare backup plans for taking care of loved ones who
are far away.

• Consider other ways to get to work, or, if you can, work
at home.

I suppose we should feel grateful these people are looking
after this condition but the point is bird flu is coming,
they expect it and they will be absolutely ruthless in their
control of man during any outbreak.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Farce: How did the word "farce" come to mean "comedy"?

"Farce" comes from the Latin farcire, meaning "to stuff."
The early miracle plays were padded or stuffed with jokes
and low comedy scenes - and so this type of comedy came to
be called a "farce."

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

You may fail a thousand times, but success may be

HA! HA! HA!

An elderly lady goes into the doctor and tells him -
"Doctor, I don't know what the problem is, but I've been
farting all the time. It's not really a problem socially
because they don't make any noise and don't smell. I just
can't stop farting all the time. In fact while I've been in
here I must have farted at least 20 times."

The doctor nods and gives her some pills. "Here take these
for two weeks and come see me again when you are done."

So she takes the pills and returns two weeks later as
instructed. Infuriated, she confronted the doctor. "What
kind of medicine is this? I'm still farting just as much?
They still don't make any noise, but now they stink
terribly!"

The doctor nodded, "It's alright, now that we have your
sinus' cleared up, we'll work on your hearing next!"

Some men give up their designs when they have almost
reached the goal; while others, on the contrary, obtain
a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more
vigorous efforts than before.
