--------------
Is there a coldest possible temperature?
There is. It's -460 degrees Fahrenheit. It might seem
strange that there would a limit to how cold something could
get, but there's a reason for the limit. When something
(say, a cup of coffee) is hot, its molecules are vibrating
very fast. As it gets colder, its molecules slow down.
Eventually it gets SO cold (we now have frozen coffee) that
its molecules don't move at all. We call that "absolute
zero."
What does it mean to be ambidextrous?
According to Ambrose Bierce's classic and witty work, The
Devil's Dictionary, being ambidextrous means being "able to
pick with equal skill a right-hand pocket or a left." In
fact, ambidextrous means to be equally dextrous with either
hand. That is, the ability to use both hands with equal
skill and coordination.

Crude oil surges amid tension with Iran
By MADLEN READ AP Business Writer
© 2007 The Associated Press
NEW YORK — Oil prices surged above $65 a barrel Thursday,
driven to new six-month highs by declining U.S. gasoline
inventories and the fear that strained relations between
Iran and Western nations could put exports in jeopardy.
Iran has detained 15 British navy personnel, and London said
it would take the issue to the U.N. Security Council.
Worries over that development have put an extra premium on
energy prices, which had already been rising due to seven
straight weeks of declines in U.S. gasoline inventories amid
strong demand.
Gasoline inventories remain in the upper part of the average
range for this time of year, but U.S. gasoline demand
averaged 9.2 million barrels last week, up 1.6 percent from
last year, the Energy Information Administration said
Wednesday. Wachovia economist Jason Schenker pointed out
that these demand levels weren't seen until May last year.
"Supply is down, demand is up — these are fundamentals that
mean higher prices," said Schenker. "As long as unemployment
rate remains low and disposable income is up, gasoline
demand is likely to be strong."
He added that he believes the "probability seems very small"
that there will be war with Iran. Nevertheless, in an
environment of high demand and falling domestic supplies,
traders are closely monitoring news out of the region.
Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, is located
along the Strait of Hormuz, through which tankers ship about
17 million barrels of crude oil per day, according to the
EIA. That accounts for two-fifths of the world's crude oil
traded by tanker, and about one-fifth of total oil
production. The exports through the waterway go to the
United States, Western Europe and Japan, and traders are
betting that if hostility escalates, those supplies could be
disrupted.
Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose $1.64 to $65.72 a
barrel in midday trading on the New York Mercantile
Exchange. The contract settled at $64.08 a barrel Wednesday,
its highest close since Sept. 11, 2006.
Gasoline prices at the pump — which had surged about 20
percent since the beginning of the year, even before Iran
detained the British sailors — continue to rise. The average
price for a gallon of gasoline cost $2.620 Thursday, up from
$2.603 Wednesday and 12 cents higher than a year ago,
according to AAA.
Schenker noted that the average U.S. pump price is the
highest its ever been for March, and said it could reach a
range of $2.75 to $3.35 a gallon by the summer. The highest
recorded national average for unleaded gasoline was $3.057 a
gallon in September 2005, according to AAA, after Hurricane
Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.
Iranian authorities have been detaining the British marines
and sailors since Friday on claims they had trespassed into
Iranian territory. Britain maintains they were in Iraqi
waters. On Wednesday, Iran's foreign minister said Britain
must admit the 15 entered Iranian waters to resolve a
standoff over their capture. On Thursday, Britain said it
was taking the issue to the Security Council — prompting
Tehran to warn it was reconsidering releasing the only woman
among the detainees.
"Until there is some kind of breakthrough in negotiations on
the nuclear issue, tensions are likely to rise between the
Allies and Iran. As long as the tension lingers, we are
likely to have periodic eruptions that will bring back the
specter of Iran blocking the Straits of Hormuz," Peter
Beutel of Cameron Hanover wrote in a note.
Crude oil on Nymex had spiked briefly above $68 a barrel in
after-hours trading Tuesday on a rumor, denied by the U.S.
military, that Iran had fired on a U.S. ship in the Persian
Gulf.
In other trading on Nymex, gasoline rose 5.75 cents to
$2.1147 a gallon; heating oil rose 3.16 cents to $1.8590 per
gallon, and natural gas was up less than a cent to $7.674
per 1,000 cubic feet.
The EIA reported Thursday that natural gas in storage in the
United States fell by 22 billion cubic feet for the week
ended March 23 to 1.511 trillion cubic feet, down from 1.533
trillion cubic feet the previous week.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
The Ins And Outs of Breathing
Every breath you take is vital to your survival
(This is not just discussion of the obvious - look!)
PART 2 of 10
Just like our highway system, your respiratory system has
built-in correction and protections: barriers and supports.
We'll look at these and how they keep you breathing comfortably.
I'd like to have you join me on a journey through your body via
a big "breath of air".
First I'd like to tell you about the "road' itself (anatomy) and
then how it carries this breath of air to its final destination
(physiology/function). And along the way, we'll talk about the
normal aging process and take a couple of detours to discuss
what happens when the path isn't too smooth and how you might
then consider doing a few things differently.
I wrote about the term "rebound" a while ago, but I find many
people don't know about it, and it seems the right place to
mention it again. So that will be "revisited".
It's easier if we follow one big breath from its entrance into
your body to its final destination into any cell...
Anatomically, in a normal, healthy body, a breath of air enters
your nose (not your mouth). It swirls through your sinuses to
the pharynx (throat), through the larynx (voice box), through
trachea (windpipe), spreads into the bronchus (the main one) the
bronchi (main branches) and ends in tiny sacs called alveoli at
the base of your lungs. The pharynx, larynx, trachea, and
bronchi are basically hollow tubes; they are kept open by groups
of circular coils. The lungs, sinuses, and alveoli are special
tissue.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

No Oil - Gas Going Up
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY - that is all the world seems to worry
about.
Did you notice the “tone”, the “gist” of the cover story
today? The spin is now and in every article - about money.
In the article they speak of the price of gasoline going up,
they speak of shortages because of potential war, they
concern themselves about money.
There are two things that stand out in this report, at least
to me. The first is Iran is playing right into the west’s
hands. If they don’t release those 15 British sailors then
it is one more spike in the coffin, one more reason to
attack.
It is my belief Iran will be attacked in any event. The west
needs oil and Iran has it. The west will do the same as they
just did in Iraq - conquer, put in a puppet government, and
then secure an act of parliament for U.S. and British
companies to do what they want with the oilfields.
The second thing that shows through the article and is given
no attention at all is the twin events of higher demand for
oil and the decreasing production. Both are mentioned, of
course. But they are not mentioned with any degree of
reality. They are casually passed over as being a part of
the story.
In truth the world oil supplies are dwindling to a point of
breaching our economies. If shortages continue we will see a
depression of monumental proportions.
That demand will continue to be high. The world is adding
nearly 8 million people every month to its ranks. That
spells demand in anybody’s language.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Half-Cocked: Where doe the expression "go off half cocked"
come from?
From hunting. A gun at half cock is in the safety position;
it cannot be fired. But a hunter many, in his excitement at
sighting game, raise the gun to his shoulder and pull the
trigger while still "half-cocked." Nothing happens. And so,
"To go off half-cocked" means to attempt something in a
hurry without proper preparation and to fail in achieving
the end.
