Is it true that ONLY Inuits are permitted to hunt
polar bears and for everyone else it is illegal?
Not just Inuits. But it is true that in most countries with
polar bear populations, only natives are permitted to
hunt the bears and then only in a limited number. In
Alaska, natives kill about 100 polar bears per year
under the subsistence provision of the Marine Mammal
Protection Act. If a native kills a bear, he is required by
law to use the carcass in some way and he may not
sell the skin, though he CAN sell products made from the
skin. In Canada, natives can hunt polar bear according
to a quota. They are also allowed to sell their right to
hunt to non-natives. THAT can be lucrative. Foreign
sports hunters will pay as much as 20,000 US dollars for
the right to kill a polar bear. Greenland and Russia have
similar native-only hunting restrictions. In Norway, no
one is permitted to kill polar bears. They are
completely protected.
Is it true that daddy-longlegs are the most venomous spiders?
Don't feel bad if you believed this - it's an oft-repeated
"factoid" on the Internet - but one that just isn't true. According
to the myth, daddy-longlegs spiders are really
super-venomous and the only reason we DON'T have to
fear them is that their fangs are too short to bite humans.
No one seems to know where this story originated, but spider
experts say it's false. First of all, there are several different
kinds of creatures known as daddy-longlegs. One is properly
a spider and is commonly found in cellars. Another type, also
popularly known as "harvestmen," is related to spiders, but is
in a separate order called "Opiliones." These creatures don't
even have venom glands or fangs (and, thus, no venom).
The true daddy-longleg spiders, on the other hand, do indeed
have short fangs. No one has ever reported being bitten by one.
The issue of "most venomous," say scientists is actually rather
silly. If a spider DOESN'T bite humans, then how would we
even know how venomous it was? Research rules do not
allow researchers to simply test venom on human subjects
and scientists are not terribly interested in studying the venom
of spiders that don't pose a threat. However this myth got
started, experts say it is not based on known facts.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE TEAM
MISSION STATEMENTS?

A team is not a team unless it knows why it’s a team.
Teams according to Jon Katzenbach* are "small
groups of people with complementary skills
committed to a common purpose, approach,
and performance goals for which they hold
themselves mutually accountable". The first
thing that small group of people has to
do is to establish that common purpose.
A team purpose is usually shaped in response
to a request, opportunity or demand from
management. If you ARE management,
then your purpose as a team may be more
urgent, more open-ended, and more difficult to
capture. The parameters of a team purpose
are usually framed by the performance
requirement of the company. If you are
a peanut-dicer maker, your team will likely
have a mission statement that will enhance
production, market or function of peanut-dicers.
Pinpointing the mission is essential. Only then
can every team member focus clearly.
Clear statement of purpose establishes the
character, rationale and performance challenges
for the team, but allows for creativity and
'wiggle room' for the team to set specific goals,
timing and approach. Most teams do not spend
sufficient time defining their purpose. It is
somehow assumed that everyone knows it!
Take, for example, the software development
industry. They are known for the
"Fire, Ready, Aim" approach to creating software.
There is even a cartoon that shows a project
manager telling his team, "You go upstairs and
start writing code. I'll go and find out what they
want it to do!" On a more serious note, research
shows that much time, energy and money is saved
in the technology industry by working groups
and teams that take the time to explore and clarify
their requirements. In fact, statistics suggest that
spending at least 40% of the project time is
efficient and effective! Compelling information,
isn't it?
An example closer to home would be how you
use goal-setting in your own life. Do you have
a fuzzy goal such as "I want to be healthier"?
Unless you know clearly that you want to have
more energy, be stronger, more flexible and
resilient, and cough less, you will not be focused
enough to find solutions that match your goals.
"I want to be healthier" is the impetus for creating
the mission statement. In the same way, "We
need more profit" is the impetus for creating
the team. Then the team goes to work!
Sometimes a team mission statement is
straightforward, for example, to recommend the
best solution to a specific problem and little
time is required for all to understand the mission.
Team members can immediately develop
their approach and performance goals. Other
times, teams have a fuzzy idea about why they
have been brought together and need to
make delineating that the first order of business.
Teams run things, recommend things or make
and do things. Every member needs to know the
purpose of the team, and needs to be able to
state it in twenty words or less. How is your team
doing?

A major problem that I come across is guilt felt by the
caregiver. When we discuss this, they are often very
surprised that this is normal and shared by many others.
That in itself, is often a huge de-stressor. Just being
able to speak about their fears and perceived
shortcomings, and abandoned hope for a more
productive future, gives the caregiver some peace of
mind. (There are organisations for caregivers by
caregivers and your community groups will know how
to contact them.) By opening up, they can learn different
coping skills. It is important to remember that the
caregiver also has rights: not just a lot of responsibilities.
It is normal to have feelings of frustration and total
tiredness. Frequently, mealtimes and routines have
had to be adjusted and often neglected. Rest for
everyone is important.
Here are some suggestions that have worked. They
won't all do in all situations, but they should start the
thinking process. It is very important for caregivers to
know they are not alone in their situation: that others
have done it successfully and lived through the
challenging times. Often just getting a few of them
together or putting them in touch with each other, …with
their permission, is enough to give them back control
and their self worth.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Others came to the pole and swung. In every case
their hands and arms passed through the pole.
All present had graduated to higher law, this day. That
even included Mae Wiley, Mombudo, Kenyata, Abetta,
Miguele, Sue Miles, Helen Striker, and young
Billy Hendricks. Not one was missed.
Even the drummers and musicians graduated to
higher law.
The entire yard emitted a mysterious light. The
neighbors could not see what was happening. This
was a joyous day for all.
Sien tried to advise them there were other parts of the
law, to which they should pay attention. "Learn this, to
whom much is given, much is expected." You who have
learned to live by higher law will be fully expected to
aid mankind when he is in need. Think, too, that
everyday you will have to remind yourself to live by
higher law, for your tendency will be to go back to the
things before. It will take only a little while for this
knowledge to become permanent. Remember
always - As you give, so shall it be done unto you."
The emotions of gratitude and love were very strong
in the yard at this moment. Romano and Oomano knew
what had happened and they were glad. What a
wedding this was, is.
Even the kids from the orphanage who changed at
the next shift, became masters. They almost "fell" into
it. Yet the promise of Jesus held. All were made
masters that day, because they all wanted and chose.
Sue Miles, the Henry's next door neighbor, could hardly
believe what she could do. She never expected to be
able to do what Sam and Alewka could do. In fact she
wrote the whole idea off, making no attempt to commit.
To her is seemed impossible. Yet here it was. She had
accomplished. She knew what Sam and Alewka were
thinking. She knew she could travel, manifest what she
wanted. She knew her "struggle" was over. She, too, cried.
To Hilda White this came as a complete surprise. At
first, it frightened her a little, until her husband, Jim,
told her they would take it easy and learn this new way
well. He showed her how they could now truly help
mankind, which, in both of them, was the reason they
were involved with the ministry in the first place.
To Mazunta's folks this was a surprise. They had been
having the idea their time has passed. It was now time
for the young. Little did they know they would be able
to overcome death. From this day their lives were in
their complete control. They were now able to do as
their son, their daughter-in-law, their daughter-in-law's
parents. Their hearts were filled with love, toward one
another, toward all.
Sonora's parents Mombudo and Kenyata, too were
overwhelmed with the gift. They knew they would never
again be threatened or harmed by the ignorance of the
people in the land where they lived. They could help their
village as Sonora had done, and they could help mankind
as they were called upon. This was a great day. It inspired
Mombudo to dance.
That the drummers had also accomplished was clearly
evident. The music changed to what one might term "music
from heaven". Somehow it was different. It was more
"mellow", "sweeter", more "pleasing" to the ear. And then
there were other instruments in the mix now. The
drummers could manifest what instrument they wanted
and play it perfectly, and, so, when they wanted they
brought in violins, harps, trumpets, coronets, choir.
Young Billy Hendricks was taken by complete surprise.
That he could now manifest all he wanted changed his
life completely, He had thought he wanted a lot of money.
That was what most kids in North America think. Yet, now,
he could have all he wanted, and in the flash of an eye,
he suddenly didn't want for anything. He would have to
learn to live with that. He knew Tim and Tom would help
him, and he was reminded, from within, that he would be
called upon to help others in need. This, Billy was more
than willing to do. He remembered where he had come
from. He knew his humble beginnings and was thankful
for this gift.
Little Hemno, who stayed with Sonora and her family,
was dealing with the change that had come over him. He
saw himself as a leader of men, showing them the way,
and this just made that dream possible. He would walk
the land and teach. For those who listened, they, too,
would learn higher law. He knew he was only thirteen
now and that he had some more years to mature, but he
had a clear vision of what he wanted to do, and who he
was.
