How did the name "hush puppy" come about?
Supposedly, these inexpensive fritters were made,
literally, for puppies. After a day of hunting and fishing
popular among Southern men, the group would fry
up the day's proceeds and have a big feast. Catfish
was generally on the menu. To keep the hunting dogs
quiet, they'd use the cornmeal intended for catfish to
fry up a few tasty cakes for the dogs.
How do you make a "fritter"?
To make a fritter is simple. You take a small quantity of
batter and fry it in boiling lard or in a frying pan. Fritters
are of various kinds, named from the substance placed
in the batter. You can have apple fritters, corn fritters,
oyster fritters or any other kind you can think of.

A cannibal went to the tribe's witch doctor.
"Doc, I've been feeling lousy lately."
"Hmmm," replied the witch doctor. "Let's review your diet.
Are you eating man or animal?"
"Man, doc. We're eating those Catholic missionaries we
caught last week."
"OK, tell me how you cook them."
"Same way as always, doc. We boil them up in the big pot."
"Hmmmm," pondered the witch doctor. "Tell me more about
these Catholic missionaries."
"Well, funny thing, doc. They all look alike! They're short, fat,
wear long robes, sandals, rope for belts, and are bald with
a fringe of hair."
"Well, that's your problem right there," responded the witch
doctor. "Those guys aren't boilers! Their friars!"
Wow! This guy sounds like the kind of connoisseur I don't
want to meet.
Still, like all jokes it brings out a point. It explains that often
when we are striving to reach a goal, we don't "cook right".
Oh! We have all the right ideas. We have the right products.
We have the right audience to reach, we have found our
niche, but somehow it isn't quit working just right.
So many try and fail because they don't properly assess
the circumstances, the conditions or how they are reacting
to them. They simply draw the conclusion their attempts
don't work and they move on to try something altogether
new and different, or quit.
You know, we would likely not have the telephone if Bell
took that attitude. He knew he was in the right arena. He
knew he was on the right path. He knew he was close.
Yet somehow it wasn't working just right.
Then, one day, one of his assistants had an accident that
changed the world forever. He spilled some fluid on vital
equipment, and his voice was heard over wires.
That is what we must do. We must not give up. We must
try the same old thing in different ways. You KNOW, deep
inside you that you are doing right, are in the right place.
All you need do is sometimes change the way you cook
to have the meal turn out right.

Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 2 of 9
First I'll outline some "internal matters" and then follow with
some external ones. This will include the cycle of infection and
how to recognize what is coming at you. If you don't recognize
the risk, you are at its mercy. As always, this information is
an overview and is for educational purposes. I would encourage
you to do a lot of research because this subject is not only
very involved but vitally important and your well being.
It goes without saying that a healthy body is your first and
most important line of defense. It is your best protection. Your
body's main area of defense is the immune system. We often hear
about our immune system in terms of being improved by certain
vitamins. But in actual fact your immune system is very complex
and performs many different functions. A few individual vitamins
will not fill all its requirements. A strong immune system will
keep you healthy for a long time. But once it has exhausted its
supply of nutrients and can't borrow any more from any part of
its system, things start to breakdown. It also stands to reason
that the more you look after it, and the less you give it to
"correct" or render harmless, the longer it will serve you.
In this article we are going to focus on infections as we are
faced with many unknowns. You simply can't live your life in
isolation from the rest of the world...and it's that collective
"world" that gives us the unhealthy problems. (However I do
know of people who tiptoe through life hoping they will get to
the other end without too much trouble!)

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Oomano prepared supper for the pair of them, over a
fire Romano had built.
They had enjoyed the day just walking around the beach,
watching the animals, listening to the sounds of the jungle.
Neither one of them was proficient at living in this
environment and had it not been for higher law, they
would not have been permitted to stay here.
For those who don't know how to survive in this land it
takes some time to pick up the ways. Yet if you live by
higher law, you are safe in all circumstances.
Supper was a combination of a warmed paste like
substance Oomano had prepared from some wild
vegetables she had found. She had also manifested
some flat bread so they could eat the paste. Additional
items were some fruit Romano had picked, and some
water.
They sat on the ground around the fire and talked about
their future, as they ate their supper.
There was still nearly the full bottle of champagne left
from last night, and while it had gone a little flat, they
thought they would save if for sunset.
This spot on the river was a point where the river curved
around. They could see both east and west from this
vantage point.
Following their supper they took the champagne and
glasses down to the beach, manifested some chairs upon
which to sit, and spent the balance of the evening just
talking.
Pouring the champagne, Romano spoke, "A toast to us,
and our future. May we serve each other and mankind
as we would be served."
They held up their glasses, clinked them together, "And
may we always love each other as we do today." said
Oomano.
The day was giving them a light show that was nothing
short of spectacular.
The sun was setting in the west, and while bright where
it was, the colors that spread from it were red and orange,
yellow shining off some clouds, and the darkening blue
sky above.
The colors of the jungle now stood out as near black in
the shadows and the green only showed where some
light hit the trees. The daytime sounds were shutting
down and the night hunters were beginning to stir.
The couple had seen many tracks on the beach, of
animals that had come here to drink. There were cats,
hoofed animals and clearly an crocodile or two. Yet they
had seen nothing that close today. Their presence must
have kept the animals away.
The night was warm and seemed to envelope one as if
it were a blanket. It would cool down later, but for now it
was warm, balmy and very comfortable.
The two lovers held and hugged one another as they
watched all this beauty pass before them. Every minute
it changed, with new colors, new shadows, new sounds.
Few people in the world had the privilege to look upon
a sight like this. Even fewer seemed to appreciate it. But
for Oomano and Romano it was like watching a love
story in a movie theater. They were in love and it was
as if their Maker was painting this picture just for them.
He kissed her, full, on the mouth. Her mouth opened
and their tongues danced together. He touched her
breast and her breathing showed immediate response.
They made love, again, this time on the beach, under
the splendor of the setting sun.
When they had finished they stood and brushed each
other off. This sand was sticky stuff, if one was sweating
in this warm night.
Holding their arms around each other they watched the
last of the light disappear, then walked arm in arm back
up to the hut, and the fire, that now had nearly burned out.
Romano re-kindled the fire and they sat next to each
other near the fire, continuing their talk.
There was much to talk about, really. They were beginning
a new life together. They spoke of having children, where
they would live, what they would do. They both realized
they would no longer be needed to look after the kids at
Oomano's folks place. After yesterday all the kids would
live by higher law and were more than capable of looking
after themselves.

A woman makes a list of things she needs and then goes
out to the store and buys these things. A man waits till the
only items left in his fridge are half a lime and a soda. Then
he goes grocery shopping. He buys everything that looks
good. By the time a man reaches the checkout counter, his
cart is packed tighter than the Clampett's car on Beverly
Hillbillies. Of course, this will not stop him from going to
the 10-items-or-less lane.

As a professor at Texas A & M, I taught during the day and did
research at night. I would usually take a break around nine,
however, calling up the strategy game Warcraft on the Internet and
playing with an on-line team.
One night I was paired with a veteran of the game who was a master
strategist. With him at the helm, our troops crushed opponent after
opponent, and after six games we were undefeated. Suddenly my
fearless leader informed me his mom wanted him to go to bed.
"How old are you?" I typed.
"Twelve," he replied. "How old are you?"
Feeling my face redden, I answered, "Eight."
