You Want It By When?

People hate excuses. Missed deadlines generate
excuses faster than dogs eat homework!
When you are asked to undertake a project, understand
the expectations. Be forthcoming with your questions
about the parameters and purposes of the project.
Get as much clarity as you can about what your boss
is wanting from you specifically. Discuss the projected
timeline in depth. Take time to consider your
ability to meet the schedule. Agree to produce
only what you are willing to deliver, what you CAN
deliver. Then, proceed.
Everything is fine and, then, you hit a snag. What
to do?
You might think you have good reasons for missing
a deadline. No doubt, you do. Projects intervene.
Others fail to get you information on time. The time
for those reasons...and their solutions...is at the first
moment you realize you will not be able to meet the
deadline. It is essential to be pro-active. If there is
likely to be a time problem, your boss wants to know
about it at the earliest
possible moment.
You demonstrate your understanding of the
importance of a project to your manager
by being pro-active in this way. Show that you
are aware of his/her schedule. Be as accountable
as possible. You want the project to succeed and,
therefore, inform your boss of the needed alteration
in timing as soon as possible. You are simply
altering a schedule, not trashing a project. Put it
in perspective for the success of the project.
Demonstrate some control of the situation. You are
offering a progress report, not a report of no progress.
Extending a deadline is buying time. What are you
going to exchange for the purchase?
When you have not met a deadline, your boss has
four main choices: fire you, demand free overtime,
give the project to someone else, or extend your
deadline. S/he is far more likely to feel positively
about extending the deadline if you can demonstrate
an increase in the value he or she will receive.
Here's a great example of this: "To do the most
thorough job possible and prevent us from making
a mistake on this, I'm going to need a week more. I
don't think it will do us any good to try to rush it and
end up neglecting x.y and z."* Be clear about
what that additional time will produce--in this case,
a more thorough, thoughtful and successful job.
Make no excuses. Folks may accept them, but, they
will never like them. Being
perceived as an excuse-maker, calls your
effectiveness and maturity into question. It affects
your future relationship with these folks.
This is big stuff! It's your career. Be pro-active!

Personal Infection Control
Making Sure You Are Healthy Enough
To Withstand Unhealthy Conditions
PART 5 of 9
This cycle of infection sounds a little confusing, but I'll give
you an example further along. You are dealing with a formula
that includes two HOSTS, an infectious (causative) AGENT,
METHODS OF TRANSMISSION, and ENTRY and EXIT points.
First you have to have an infectious AGENT. Without it, you
don't need to worry. Some microorganisms are harmful and some
are not. For instance, you can have the bacteria called E. Coli
in your digestive tract and that is good. It helps to digest
your foods. But if it finds its way into your skin, into your
eye, or into your surgical site, that's bad. There is also
another "angle" to the agent or pathogen (harmful microorganism)
to be a problem for you. A few probably won't do much harm. A
lot can do a lot of damage. So numbers count. This is called the
"bioburden".
The next part of the cycle is a HOST and that is a person. You,
as this HOST, now become the nice growing environment for this
multiply. Often there is an incubation period. This is when the
microorganisms grow in numbers, but really don't give you a hint
you are involved. Eventually you show signs and symptoms, and
know you are now "infectious". It stands to reason that a weaker
person takes fewer microorganisms to make them ill. If your body
is healthy enough and the microorganism can't get a foothold,
the infectious agent just gets rendered harmless by the body's
defence mechanisms.
Next, every "infection" cycle has to include a way for the
infectious agent to leave (EXIT point) your body (HOST). (If it
stays with the original person because it can't get out, the
infection won't spread.) This exit point can be through a cut, a
touch, a cough, or a sneeze. Exit and entry points can be the
same.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

This day was practice day. Up to now the newcomers
to higher law had just been discussing principles,
theories, laws. They were learning what was behind
the actions they would this day take.
The day dawned wet, cloudy, cool. Yet that did not
matter.
Sam Henry took Billy Hendricks aside and the pair
of them looked at the weather. They decided it
would be a good idea if, right here in this yard,
there was no rain today, and that the sun shone.
Sam discussed with Billy how to make the clouds
disappear in order to accomplish that objective.
Then Billy did it.
The day was now bright sunshine and no more rain,
only there in the yard.
"Having done that for this small area, Billy, you
now know it is possible for as large an area as
you want. Nonetheless, you are permitted to confer
only blessings and you do not know where in earth
the rain and cool is needed, so you should not
yield to the temptation to make things 'your way'
everywhere. What would the land be like if all it
ever had was sunshine. It would not take long
before your actions would backfire on you. It is
your responsibility to think these things through,
Billy." said Sam.
"I can see that Mr. Henry. I know it would be
unwise of me to call for sunny days all the time.
In fact I don't even want them all the time. But
your point is made. I must think through what I am
doing, and not do things just to show people or to
satisfy my own whims. Upsetting the ebb and flow
of nature is not my business." answered Billy.
"You will be pestered by those who do not know
higher law, Billy. They will want you to show them
what they call 'miracles'. And they will not ever
stop. They will insist you give them what they
want and will make no effort to learn higher law
themselves. It is important you do not give in to
your temptation, within, to stroke your own ego by
showing some friends what you can do. That will
backfire fast, for you will be doing it for your
own selfish ends and not to aid mankind. You know
what the law will do with that." Sam went on.
And, so, now, Billy had begun to experience real
results from his learning of the past couple days.
He considered this to be fantastic. His heart was
thinking of all he could do with this new
knowledge and unfortunately he was thinking in the
way Sam spoke of. He could be a real hero back
home with this ability.
"Don't think that way Billy. You will end up doing
more harm to yourself than you want." said Sam.
"You know what I am thinking?" asked Billy.
"Yes, Billy. Don't forget I went through the same
emotions, the thinking, the temptations. So did
Jesus. This ability is not for show Billy. It is
to aid you and you are to aid mankind. The show
stuff will only bring unto you harm. Further, if
this gets out back home they will pester you
forever. We went through some of that Billy. You
might remember when the churches were all up in
arms against us. That is what that was all about.
Everybody wanted a 'miracle'. None wanted to learn
higher law for themselves. They were all at our
door with their hands out." answered Sam.
"But it says in the Bible that even Jesus was
tempted, but he was tempted by Satan." said Billy.
"You are right Billy, that is what it says. Do you
believe in the devil Billy?" asked Sam.
"I don't know what to believe. There is so much
wrong in the world I just don't know." answered
Billy.
"Think on that Billy. Now that you have higher law
and the knowledge that goes with that, ask the
question and see what answer you get." said Sam.
"The answer I'm getting is 'no'. " said Billy.

A bank robber in Virginia Beach got a nasty surprise when
a dye pack designed to mark stolen money exploded in his
Fruit-of-the-Looms. The robber apparently stuffed the loot
down the front of his pants as he was running out the door.
"He was seen hopping and jumping around," said police
spokesman Mike Carey, "with an explosion taking place
inside his pants." Police have the man's charred trousers
in custody.
