Search Engines Going Loco for Local...
But When Will Small Business Get Real?

Here?s a subject that?s generated lots of interest lately.
Let?s review:
Google Goes Local
The search engine giant recently released Google Local,
which it had been beta testing since Oct. 2003. Users
enter geographic search terms, such as zip code or city
name, and get results with physical street address and
phone number, along with a MapQuest map and related
links. You can also vary the radius of the search, from
1 to 45 miles.
Right now it?s free, but you can expect to see paid
AdWords in the future. The company plans to include
international markets in the coming months.

Yahoo! Launches SmartView
Yahoo! launched SmartView in March, which is integrated
with Yahoo! Maps and provides information on nearby
businesses such as restaurants, hotels, discount stores.
It does this by SmartView looking at your destination, then
offering what it thinks you might be interested in once
you get there.
Other categories are available in case SmartView guesses
wrong, so if you?d rather shop than eat, click on ?
Shopping & Services? for a list of options. Choose ?Malls?
and you get a map with icons that represent nearby
shopping areas. Pass your cursor over the icon and
information pops up. It?s a great user interface, but not
entirely intuitive. Instead of the map being the end point
for a search, it?s the beginning.
SmartView already displays sponsored links by Overture,
which of course is owned by Yahoo! Industry experts say
that SmartView is only one piece of Yahoo!'s local search
strategy, which it will try to aggregate in a number of

Verizon?s SuperPages.com
Verizon recently overhauled and re-launched its
SuperPages.com and became the first online directory
to offer PPC advertising to national and local businesses.
This allows small businesses to target consumers in a
geographic region, and pay only when visitors click
through to their site. Verizon will continue to offer fixed
price ad placements for advertisers who don?t want to
manage PPC campaigns. Search results are provided
through an agreement with FindWhat.com
CitySearch
CitySearch is a local search veteran, having provided
information about U.S. cities since 1996. The site primarily
focuses on area attractions, restaurants, shopping, event
listings, and recreation, though you can find any type of
local business overall. Material is gathered through
partnerships with other companies, such as yellow
pages. Citysearch crawls the web for additional
information and adds in events data. In June 2003,
they launched their Cost-Per-Lead program, which
allows their 25,000 advertisers to decide how many
leads they want and how much they want to spend.
AOL & MapQuest Embrace Local Search
AOL?s ?In Your Area" local search function lets members
search for business listings, entertainment and events
near their location indicated by zip code. Almost half
of AOL members who logon every month search for local

owned MapQuest.com recently started beta testing their
local search engine, MQSearch. MapQuest?s 26 million
monthly users can search for local businesses by name
or category, plus city/state or ZIP.
Results are returned with business name, address and
phone, each linked to a MapQuest map and estimated
driving distance. MQSearch results can be sorted
alphabetically or by distance, and the search radius
can be expanded from 25 to 50 miles.

These are just the big ones, there are others, and they
are all jockeying for position in the local search race.
In addition to search engines, there are specialty local
oriented sites such as www.topix.net, www.vivante.com,
and www.mobilemaps.com.
All the interest in local search is in direct response to a
very real demand for local information online. People
like to find and buy things in their neighborhood, and
more consumers are turning to the Net rather than lift
the 20-pound Yellow Pages. According to The Kelsey
Group, the local search-based advertising market is
expected to be worth $2.5 billion by 2008.
Of course the only question remains: when will small
local businesses join the party? Attempts to crack open
the local market over the last few years have been less
than successful. Apparently small business owners
remember all too well the lessons learned a few years
ago, when all the hype over getting online left them
with lighter pockets and little benefits. Most seem to
be taking a wait and see attitude.
In the meantime, savvy business owners who have
embraced the Internet are finding little competition for
local keywords. These early adopters will be ahead
of the pack, and it will be that much harder for the
competition to catch up.

Word
Besides making backup copies of your documents
on your own, you can tell Word to make backup copies
for you. Under this arrangement, Word makes a
second copy of the document and keeps it in the same
folder as the original. However, the backup copy
is made only when you, and not Word, save the
document. If a power failure occurs, you can't recover
the work you did in the last few minutes, although you
can recover the version of the document that was saved
the last time you saved the document.
To tell Word to create backup copies of your documents,
choose Tools, Options, select the Save tab in the Options
dialog box, and check the Always Create Backup Copy
check box.

Once the microorganisms find their way OUT of your body, they
need to find their way TO the next host. This is called the
"METHOD OF TRANSMISSION": (Not into: just TO.)
"Modes of transmission" can be through direct and indirect
methods. Direct methods are touch and contact of the host's
microorganism directly to the new host. An example would be a
kiss.
Examples of indirect "sharing" are door handles or sharing of
food or toothbrushes, or any utensils that go from one person's
mouth to another. Water-borne is another method of spreading as
in protozoan infections.
Something of interest is that these microorganisms don't have
wings to fly to their new host. They have to be carried along on
something, often on dust particles that float on air currents.
So you can see that this will be an indirect way of sharing
microorganisms. The cycle is completed when the microorganisms
find another (inviting) HOST.
The entry point to the new host could be the cut on the lip or
the break in the mucous membrane of the nose or mouth. But
again, as with the numbers (bioburden), there have to be enough
to weaken the new host. And that host has to be vulnerable or
have a weakened immune system, so the bug can get a foothold.
I think it would be helpful to illustrate this with Tom
(original host), Fred (new host), and Mo (the microorganism).
I'll add the cycle parts in brackets. From what you already know
you will be able to spot places where you now know you can take
control and break this cycle. I'll use bacteria for my example
but understand that the course of action is pretty much the same
for all groups of microorganisms.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

"Why do they have such a following?" asked Billy.
"All organized religion has a way of removing from
man responsibility for his own actions. The
religious group says "Come, and confess, and I as
the sole agent of God, will forgive your sins, and
you shall be admitted into heaven." The sad part
about that is that it comes easier to those who
contribute money to their organization. It becomes
completely obvious when you stop giving money, for
then 'forgiveness' is harder to come by. Yet the
general theme is go do what you want, if you do
wrong, then come here and I'll forgive you, pat
you on the back and send you on your way. Don't
worry about heaven, I'll make sure you get there."
said Sam, "The problem with that is man no longer
need be responsible for his actions. He knows he
can go to the 'agent' of God and be forgiven. That
is a far cry from what Jesus taught."
"Wow! No wonder people don't want to leave the
church. Suddenly they are accountable unto
themselves and that is a fearful thing, for some.
It is much better to be nurtured into oblivion by
those who purport to be the only genuine
interpreters of 'God's word'. Man has nothing to
worry about. Just go to church, pay your money and
all of heaven will open up to you, regardless what
you have done, who you have harmed or who you are.
It is easy to see why people don't want to leave
that comfort." said Billy, his eyes beginning to
open.
"Become not emotional about that, Billy. It just
is. That is the way of it, and only those who see
shall make the break and become responsible for
their own salvation. It is neither good nor bad.
It just is. All men make their choice. The laws of
your Maker will work whether man is aware of them
or not. In spite of what the church delivers unto
man, each man in some lifetime will come to see
the teaching is wrong. He will then slowly search
for truth and come upon answers by reading the
words of Jesus. There is much, also, in secular
writings that would enlighten man, if he would
only look." said Sam.
"What do you mean? There are teachers other than
Jesus who teach the way to higher law?" asked
Billy.
"Billy, there is much evidence of men in Jesus'
time and place who were also teaching the same
message. There have been men throughout all ages
who have found the way and taught it. Jesus has
had so much attention because he is the one
organized religion chose to use for their martyr."
responded Sam.
"No wonder man is confused. He can settle in to
the easy way the church presents to him and need
not struggle with the real issues of life. The
church has taken that from him." said Billy.
"Oh the church has taken much more than that from
him Billy. The church has also made it easy for
man not to be rich. The church keeps telling man
to give his money to the church, indeed, man is
wrong and should feel guilty, if he does not. The
church does not want you to be rich Billy, for
then you have time to think, and thinking men
don't follow what the church wants. Is it not
strange that the richest organizations in the
world encourage a man, through their teachings,
not to become rich?" asked Sam.
"It appears a conflict, doesn't it?" said Billy.
"Sure it does, but churches are not alone in that
motivation. All governments are the same. Thinking
people are a danger to them, and they must create
conditions that have people working hard to stay
alive. People who have too much money, who can
take time to settle back and see things as they
really are, are not good supporters of government,
either. They spend their time and money attempting
to stay away from such high taxation that removes
from them over half their earnings." replied Sam.
"Gosh! Man's system relies on control of as many
people as is possible. None are given the
opportunity to see or think except those who
embark on the task arbitrarily." said Billy.
