Is there such a thing as the Southern Lights?
Yes. The Northern Lights are known as the
Aurora Borealis, while the Southern Lights (seen
at the south magnetic pole, or the Antarctic) are
known as the Aurora Australis.
Is it true that there were once a bunch of blue people
living in the mountains of Kentucky?
It's no urban myth or fairy tale. There really WERE blue
people in the Kentucky mountains. They weren't aliens
or fairies. They were simply a clan with a rare disease
called hereditary methemoglobinemia, a condition in
which a missing enzyme causes the blood to be unable
to carry oxygen effectively to the tissues. That results in
a bluish cast to the skin and mucous membranes. The
disease is inherited, so the Fugates of Kentucky passed
it on to their children. It didn't help that the isolation of the
family caused many of them to marry OTHER family
members. If you know anything at all about genetics, you
know that intermarrying makes rare, recessive genes
much more likely to show up in offspring. (If only ONE
of your parents had this recessive gene, you wouldn't be
blue. But if BOTH of your parents had it, which was likely
if both were from the same family, then you'd have a
better chance of inheriting the condition.)
Are there STILL blue Fugates in Kentucky?
I can't promise you won't find one, but it's unlikely. For
one thing, there's less intermarrying going on in the Fugate
family now. And for another: in 1960, a doctor named
Madison Cawein prescribed methylene blue to the blue
family. It worked to help a second enzyme take over the
job of the missing one. Within minutes of taking it, the
blue people pinked up!

Don't Make Excuses: Make Things Happen!

You know that your excuses are seldom truthful, often handy
and rarely productive. So, why make them?
It's no surprise that 'Honesty is the best policy!' is so
often quoted. It's the truth. So, why do we not seem to
believe that it applies to the conversations we have with
ourselves?
Would you feel as comfortable offering your excuses to your
employer as you are offering them to yourself? Probably not.
Why? Because your employer is unlikely to buy them and is very
likely to see through them. We don't want our excuses exposed
so we're careful where we proffer them. Somehow, they are
quite acceptable to give to ourselves. We think they are
safety hidden.
Now, does this make sense? Sure. We like to feel we can get
away with things, don't we? Let ourselves off the hook.
Relieve the pressure. Have some downtime. So, what's wrong
with this picture?
PROMISE TO STRETCH NOT OVER-EXTEND
Folks make 'pie-in-the-sky' goals. In a burst of enthusiasm,
commitment to unrealistic goals seems possible. Take off the
rose-colored glasses.
Make goals that cause you to stretch but not goals that cause
you to over-extend. There is a huge difference between these
two. Stretch feels good, you know that you can do it and you
know it is good for you. Over-extension causes stress, fear
and exhaustion.
Stretch increases your capacity slowly. You can sustain your
gains. Over-extension can cause frustration, resentment
and...excuses.
PROMISE WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DELIVER
Ever made a promise that you knew as you spoke you were going
to have a problem delivering? Sure you have. Why did you do
it? There are good reasons for doing so: You want to help
someone in need. You want to work towards a promotion. You
want someone to like you more, approve of you, accept you.
Good reasons.
What happens when you cannot or do not deliver? All those
good reasons are not only negated but you may have lost the
confidence of the folks you wished to serve, please or help.
Not very wise.
What about the promises you make to yourself? You count. In
fact, you count the most. Why? Because you have to live with
you every second. Personally, I believe that the greatest
contributor to lack of self-confidence lies in our failure to
keep our promises to ourselves.
Goal achievement is rooted in keeping your promises to
yourself. Don't let yourself down. You'll soon find that you
are able to keep your careful promises to others easily.
PROMISE NOT TO CUDDLE UP WITH YOUR APOLOGIES
It's also easy to be on friendly terms with our excuses. We
condition ourselves to play it safe. We limit our adventures,
discoveries, interests and risks. When we were children, this
was usually not an issue. We simply 'went for it'.
No, I'm not suggesting throwing caution to the wind. Simply
look at what holds you back. Is it that you are unwilling to
experience even the slightest bit of discomfort or pain? Now,
there's a conundrum. Is it possible to experience change
without a little discomfort? That only happens when you
change from dress shoes to bedroom slippers, or, some kind
person provides you with clean Huggies!
Some folks think that the safe way is to do nothing. Great!
Do you want the results that choosing to do nothing produces?
If so, you are choosing wisely. If not, choose again. Even a
decision to not take action is still taking an action. Be
sure it makes sense for you.
Do you think that cuddling up with your apologies protects
your ego? Nothing ventured, nothing risked = safety? Not so.
It's never too late to try something new. Think you're too
old? Think of Grandma Moses. Think folks will laugh? Who
cares? Think of the value of laughter to them and proceed.
<g> Think you would fall on your face? So what? It's good
exercise to pick yourself up and get going again.
Resist the urge to make excuses that keep you from your
dreams. Don't make excuses. Make things happen!

If you want a bit more power to delete files, you can use the
DOS command line to access the DEL command. For example,
if you wish to delete all files with the TMP extension, you could
use the DEL *.TMP and any file with that extension will be
deleted. Note that the deleted files will not be moved to
the recycle bin.

The Ins And Outs of Breathing
Every breath you take is vital to your survival
(This is not just discussion of the obvious - look!)

Just remember that this protection of moistening and filtering
is throughout the entire respiratory system. Certain areas are
more responsible for the cleaning and moistening than others.
Eventually this breath arrives at "the exchange area". Along the
way, it has been cleaned, warmed, and moistened. Anything
unwanted has been removed and the oxygen is now ready to be
transferred to the blood stream. This happens through a
mesh-like membrane or skin. Your breath is now in your blood
stream. And it's now on the way to many cells. In return, the
carbon dioxide that was in your bloodstream now moves through
the same mesh-like skin and finds itself in the lungs. It is
propelled through essentially the same path as the breath took,
but in reverse order. Eventually it finds itself leaving your
body.
Inspiration is inviting oxygen-laden air in. Expiration is
sending waste products containing carbon dioxide out. So you can
see the very close connection between circulation and
respiration/breathing.
I have already mentioned the filtering and cleaning properties
of the mucous membranes that line all the walls of your
respiratory system. There are a few other mechanical actions
that also help your breathing. Throughout your entire body, you
have tissue that connects all parts together. It also has
muscles and bones. You may not be aware of it, but you have a
very strong layer of connective tissue that separates your
breathing cavity from your abdominal cavity. This is your
diaphragm and it plays a major role in moving air. (If these two
areas weren't separated, I could picture my stomach under my
shoulder and my bowel encircling my lungs!) Your posture also
contributes to a more open lung capacity. This kind of activity
occurs twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. And you don't
even need to think about it if you are healthy. It's a different
story if you are not.
This is the basic foundation of your body's respiratory system.
(Please don't use this for a term paper.) This information is to
help you understand the basics so you can keep healthy and
energized. Let's discuss aging. Aging is normal. We all get
older. There is no choice. You can certainly make it as
comfortable and youthful as it suits your personality, but
everyone ages. The outward appearance can be "adjusted" and
inside cavities can be patched up, but the inside foundational
parts "age".

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

said Susan.
"Oh, oh! Alewka, it looks as if we created a
couple monsters here." Sam laughed.
Mae came over to Sam and slapped him on his
shoulder. "Sam Henry, we have much to give and we
will serve with pleasure." she laughed.
Sam feigned pain, then cowed away like a whipped
dog. "Ow!"
"Oh, Sam, don't be such a big baby. Can't stand it
when you have three strong women around hey?" said
Susan.
"One is bad enough, but three?" responded Sam, "I
think I best leave before I get tongue lashed some
more."
"You can stay, sweetheart. We'll promise not to be
too tough on you." laughed Alewka.
"So what kind of traveling did you have in mind
Mae?" Alewka asked.
"Oh I don't know. I have thought for a long while
I would like to visit China, and spend some time
there. I have always liked the Chinese people and
have some kind of draw toward them. I want to
spend some time in their own country with them.
How about you Susan?" answered Mae.
"That sounds cool to me. I haven't had any special
interests, one way or another, but now my life has
changed I am quite prepared to go, do, be." said
Susan.
"Good, then China it is. What I really want to do
is to walk from Kowloon all the way up to Tibet,
and then down to New Delhi. We will learn a lot on
a trip like that. And just to keep us from
suffering too much culture shock, Sam and Alewka
can come visit us once a month. How's that you
two?" asked Mae of Sam and Alewka.
"That would be fine with us, Mae." answered
Alewka, "Right Sam."
"You bet. I think that would be a terrific
journey, Mae. I'll bet you'll have lots to tell us
when you return."
"Well, Sam, I have always found in traveling
before that most of my pleasure, and memories come
from getting to know the local inhabitants. Most
tourists like to hit the high spots, but I like to
mix with the people who live there. If I want to
know China, I must get to know the people, their
troubles, their good times, the way they live.
That is what I really want to do." said Mae.
"I know full well what you mean, Mae. I have felt
the same way with any traveling I have done as
well." said Susan, "You know, I think the pair of
us will get along just perfect and have a
wonderful time. When shall we get started?"
"Susan, since we need pack nothing, since we need
nothing and can travel instantly, let's start
right after we finish our coffee!" said Mae.
"Oh, gee, this is hard to get used to. I usually
spend days, even weeks, getting ready for a long
journey. To make a decision and leave all within
the same hour is all new to me. Wow!" said Susan,
"But you're right. There is no need to delay, or
make the kind of preparations I always used to
do."
"You two be careful now. I don't want you getting
into anything you can't handle. You are still
fresh with this new knowledge, and you are still
two women alone in a foreign land." said Sam.
"Sam, I thought of that. If we get into any
difficulty I'll call you. As to two women alone in
a foreign land, the Chinese have a reputation of
being amongst the most hospitable people in the
world. They will look after us Sam, and we will
help them where we can." answered Mae.
"You're right Mae. I was just throwing out the
typical parental caution. I am not sure I did that
when Tinkerbell (Eloise) took her first journey."
"Oh! Isn't that some baby those two have. Little
AliAnn is going to be a sweetheart, and I'll bet
she's already the apple of grandpa's eye." said
Mae.

PRENATAL .......... When your life was still somewhat

My granddaughter and two of my daughters and I
were shopping at a very crowded local Mall one
Saturday.
Though we were doing "back to school" shopping, I
saw a dress in a window display that I thought would
be lovely on one of my daughters, and proceeded to
tell her: "Oh Sweetie, look at this. This would be
darling on you."
Imagine my surprise and embarrassment ,when a
deep male voice replied: "Well hon, I really like the
color, but I don't think I can wear that style" Then he
smiled and went on his way.
My daughters were several feet behind me and I had
assumed they were the ones next to me. Now I make
sure whom I am speaking too, before
I call them "Sweetie"
