ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Is it true that the Picts of Scotland painted themselves blue?
The Picts of Scotland, a famous warrior tribe from days of
yore, are believed to have tattooed themselves with
elaborate tattoos or to have painted themselves with
"woad," a plant that makes a dark blue dye. Whether
they looked anything like Mel Gibson in the movie
"Braveheart" is controversial!
How long has "John Doe" been around?
According to Paul Dickson's "What's In a Name?", the use
of "John Doe" to designate someone whose actual name
we don't know has been around since the fourteenth century!
A famous legal document from that century uses the names
"John Doe" and "Richard Roe" to designate two hypothetical
people in a dispute over land. From then on, the use of
"John Doe" as a generic stand-in for an unnamed person
became widespread. Nowadays, both "John Doe" and
"Richard Roe" are used in legal proceedings as the first
and second names given to unknown defendants in a case.

Small Towns are NOT Small Potatoes
by Sharon Fling
When I first started developing websites, it was for a
corporate INTRANET -- a built-in audience waited
with baited breath, hungry for the information.
However, when I started freelancing for small
business, everything changed.
A small local business does NOT have a built in
audience. Most live in the cold cruel world of a
billion websites, with no earthly way to rise
above the clutter.
My clients knew squat about marketing and promotion.
So eventually, like a bad penny, a website might come
back to haunt me. Some customers would call to
complain that their sites weren't "working".
"In what way?" I'd wanted to know.
"Well, nobody's buying anything?" or "I'm not getting
any traffic."
I'd recite the standard webmaster chapter and verse -- the
site was optimized, submitted to search engines, blah,
blah. I told them that having a website is the equivalent
of having a phone number. That a website is only 10%,
the other 90% is marketing.
But nobody had ever told them that, so they didn't have
a clue. They thought when they got the website, they'd
be set. Just sit back and wait for the customers to
arrive...and wait...and wait...
Even though they got exactly what they asked for, I felt
bad. I didn't want to have unhappy customers telling
all their friends the Internet "doesn't work", Since all
my customers were local, I started looking for resources
specific to local online promotion.
Well, the pickings were slim. Very little had been written
on the subject. So...through a lot of trial and error I
figured it out myself. Then I wrote the book and the
rest is, as they say, history.
Anyway, I'm happy to report that things have changed
a lot in the past couple years. Internet pros are
becoming more attuned to the fact that people live
in the real "dirt" world, and have started to cater to
local businesses and their needs. If they haven't they
should. Here are a few reasons why:
STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
Many online marketers and webmasters try to market
to the world, when some of their best customers could
be right down the street. Why be a little fish in the big
crowded Internet OCEAN? In a local setting, someone
with the right expertise and attitude can position
themselves as the expert.
Truth is, most local business owners aren't likely to
hire someone they don't know and probably won't
meet. They want to see who they're doing business
with, establish personal relationships, learn to trust.
The key words are "trust" and "relationships". It doesn't
happen overnight, but once you have it, they're likely
to be customers for life.
CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY
Someone wrote me recently, telling me all the reasons
why online marketers don't want to be bothered with
local business. It's a tough nut to crack, so why bother?
Go after the low-hanging fruit. He talked about it being
a numbers game -- the bigger the pool of
would-be-buyers, the greater the likelihood of making
a sale. It's easier to sell to active seekers. We're cheap,
lazy, impatient, and besides, who wants to spend time
trying to convince computer-phobes what they're
missing? It's their loss, right? Small towns are small
potatoes.
So everyone has jumped on the global bandwagon,
leaving local business to either get with the program
or get lost. And money that could be funneled back
into the community is being sucked into the web,
feeding the international economy instead of the local
economy. Then, he said, "as prices continue to rise
in the cities, businesses will be forced to go global
in some way, since the local economy will no longer
be able to completely support it."
Bingo! My point exactly.
Look, small local business cannot ignore the
Internet forever, not if they want to stay in business.
For individuals with patience and concern for their
local community, local business can be a viable
target market for their services -- website
design/hosting /SEO/link building, email marketing,
local portals, etc. It's not a get-rich- quick
opportunity...but how many people are really
getting rich quick online anyway?
MAKE MORE MONEY
Concern for community is great but at the end of
the day, we need to make money to stay in business.
And there's lots of money to be made in the local
business space. Geocommerce -- local online
advertising -- is predicted to be a $50 BILLION
market by 2006.
Local business needs the same marketing toolset
that online business needs, but with a narrower
focus. Since so few people are paying any attention
to the local market, it's wide open for a variety of
value added services. Here's a niche just waiting to
be filled, no matter where you live. Specializing is
the key, and what better market to focus on than
one that's growing daily AND can help better your
local community's economy?
------------
No, it's not get rich quick. No, you can't hide behind
your monitor and remain anonymous. Yes, you risk
rejection. But it can be financially rewarding as well
as emotionally satisfying to help the businesses in
your local community to succeed... online and off.

The Ins And Outs of Breathing
Every breath you take is vital to your survival
(This is not just discussion of the obvious - look!)
PART 6 of 10
Your body adapts in several ways to this natural occurrence, but
all of this will happen slowly. Many people never realise the
changes until something unexpected draws their attention to it.
You might then notice that the capacity of your lungs to contain
and "process" air drops considerably. Of course that brings a
reduced amount of oxygen moving into the body through the
alveoli. (Stairs and hills seem steeper. You get tired more
quickly.) Consequently it means a less effective way of getting
the waste products, such as carbon dioxide, out. Your body
tissue gradually looses its elasticity. That will mean a slower
rate of gas (O2 & CO2) exchange. And if it stays longer in your
body, as a waste product, it is less healthy. Your alveoli also
get larger, more sluggish, and less effective in their filtering
activities. Your respiratory rate increases. Your diaphragm and
other muscles loose their strength. Coughing will decrease in
strength, keeping the unwanted elements in a little longer.
Let's discuss some abnormal respiratory concepts. Once you
understand and are familiar with normal respiratory functions,
it's easier to make different decisions. Although we often think
it's normal to get diseases, as we grow older, it is
unnecessary. This is not aging: it's degeneration.
You will recall that your respiratory system or the track has a
wonderful lining of mucous membranes. When it is healthy, it is
soft, moist and firm and does its job very effectively. However
once it becomes "bothered by something, it changes. And when it
changes, it cannot provide the same protection any longer. A
short-term change isn't too harmful, but long-term damage can
create all sorts of problems. And as you can see from "walking a
breath" through the system, you need these activities to
function with energy.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"I dearly love those two. Sam, Alewka, they carry
themselves in ways that would make you proud. They
are a strong couple and village life revolves
around them. They are much loved by the people.
She is some girl, your Eloise. And I'll bet that
granddaughter is going to be just like her." said
Mae.
"Well you're right about that Mae. We are very
pleased with the way Eloise turned out." said Sam.
"And I think Romano and Oomano are going to do as
well. They sure are a nice couple. They will make a
powerful team." said Alewka.
"Well, I've had all the coffee I can drink. Shall
we be off, Susan?" said Mae.
"Okay." answered Susan, somewhat reluctantly.
"If you don't want to come Susan, just say so. I
can go alone. I want to do this because I know I
can return in an instant if I want or need to.
Living by higher law gives me opportunities I have
not had before. You, too, can return the moment
you don't want to be there." said Mae.
"Oh, I know. It's just that I'm not used to all
this yet. I'm kind of like the "wait for me
kitten" I guess, always a bit slow on the uptake."
answered Susan, "I'll be alright. Let's go."
With that the two women said their good byes to
Sam and Alewka, requiring they come to visit once
a month, and then vanished.
They materialized right in the heart of Kowloon,
China, amidst the noise, hussle and bussle of the
city.
They must have been near a restaurant, for the
smells of cooking food got to their nostrils,
strong.
Looking around, getting their bearings, they saw
there were several eating places, including places
where you bought food and ate right there in the
street.
They did not know their exact location, although
they were not lost. They were in a crowded street
that appeared very narrow. With all the people
milling about it would be near impossible for a
vehicle to move down this street.
The buildings were high, letting in virtually no
sun. What light there was became instantly
consumed by the buildings, the people and the ever
changing scene.
There were street vendors for every kind of item
you wanted. Many of them had stores behind where
they housed much more merchandise, but all had
tables, racks, baskets of merchandise on the
street.
While some merchants were "permanent", having
stores, some were merchants came in every day
and set up shop on blankets and mats spread out on
the ground. The marketplace was a constantly
boiling pot of stew.
The noise was a continual din of people
negotiating, talking, laughing and doing business.
Everything from clothing, flowers, food, shoes,
leather goods, hardware, meat, basket ware, canned
goods, craftware, everything you could think of
was available here in this market.
The vendors all had their same spot, everyday.
Even those who came in from outside had a picked
spot and were there from early in the morning
until late at night. There was no room for any
more of them, and when a vendor became old, tired,
ill, his or her place was taken by someone in the
family, just to retain the spot.
One thing the two women noticed was even when the
negotiations got hot and heavy, there was no anger
here. Everyone got along. Even the raised voices
of those dealing, or those calling in buyers were
friendly voices.
Mae fell in love with the place immediately. Susan
was still reluctant, but followed Mae as she
worked her way through the streets. Mae loved the
busy marketplace and the crowded streets.

MOTHER'S DICTIONARY
-------------------
PUDDLE ............ A small body of water that draws other
small bodies wearing dry shoes into it.
----------------
Timmy was a little five year old boy that his Mom loved
very much and, being a worrier, she was concerned about
him walking to school when he started Kindergarten. She
walked him to school for a couple of days but when he came
home one day, he told his mother that he did not want her
walking him to school everyday. He wanted to be like the
"big boys." He protested loudly, so she had an idea of how
to handle it.
She asked a neighbor, Mrs. Goodnest, if she would
surreptitiously follow her son to school, at a distance behind
him that he would not likely notice, but close enough to keep
a watch on him. Mrs. Goodnest said that since she was up
early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way
for them to get some exercise as well so she agreed.
The next school day, Mrs. Goodnest and her little girl,
Marcy, set out following behind Timmy as he walked to
school with another neighbor boy he knew. She did this
for the whole week.
As the boys walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs,
the little friend of Timmy noticed that this same lady was
following them as she seemed to do every day all week.
Finally, he said to Timmy, "Have you noticed that lady
following us all week? Do you know her?"
Timmy nonchalantly replied, "Yea, I know who she is."
The little friend said, "Well who is she?"
"That's just Shirley Goodnest" Timmy said.
"Shirley Goodnest? Who the heck is she and why is she
following us?"
"Well," Timmy explained, "every night my Mom makes me say
the 23rd Psalm with my prayers 'cuz she worries about me
so much. And in it, the prayer psalm says, "Shirley
Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my
life." so I guess I'll just have to get used to it.
