TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How much does a shrew eat?

Is there such a thing as a moth that drinks blood from animals?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What defensive tactic (besides venom) does the
shrew possess?

The short-tailed shrew smells bad enough to be left alone.
When caught by a bigger predator, like a cat or fox, the
shrew exudes an odor so rank that the larger creature will
spit him out.

Is there a shrew that really walks on water?

Yes. A water shrew can walk, or rather, run on water. The
water shrew has small fringes of hair on its paws that help
keep him suspended as he strides very quickly across the
surface tension on the water.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
-----------------

It Won't Fly!

My friend worked on the Alaska pipeline as a welder. He
said helicopters were a big help in covering the rugged
ground. I've never forgotten a story he told about
being in the communications room of one of the base
camps when a call came in. A panicked voice called to
request another helicopter be sent up to the forward
work camp.

A supervisor happened to drop in and heard the
conversation between the dispatcher and the mechanic..

He got on the radio to ask the mechanic on the other
end why they need another helicopter.

The obviously harried mechanic paused before
transmitting his reply, then said vaguely, "Well, the
one we have won't fly."

The frustrated supervisor pressed the question, "Why
won't it fly."

After a long pause came another reluctant response,
"Well, I say it won't fly because it's upside down. The
pilot says it won't fly because it's under twenty feet
of water."

Well, I guess it won't fly. Notice how they were trying
to avoid letting the base camp know of the trouble?

This is the reason "caveat emptor" is the watch phrase
when conducting one's life. People have subtle ways of
not telling the truth.

I had a partner who, with me, used to purchase real
estate all over the U.S and Canada. In the beginning we
wanted properties bad enough that we were naive and
overlooked warning signs like those above. Within a few
years we learned. We adopted a policy that if we heard
one thing that didn't quite tie in with what we saw we
would walk away from the deal, letting folks know the
reason. When we adopted that policy we began to make
money.

I have no idea why some folks do not have the courage
to tell things as they are. My experience is you go
much farther in life when you possess the courage and
integrity to face and deal with the realities of life.

Think on that. When doing a job for someone how can
they rely on you or the information you give if they
suspect you of not revealing the whole truth. How about
relationships? How well do they do when one of the
partners fails to tell the whole truth?

Is there any situation in life where one should not
reveal what really is? I think not. Something is
dreadfully wrong if you cannot reveal truth.

However, one of the secrets of life that is the hardest
to learn is that not everyone needs to know. So while
you are considering the above, consider also you must
weigh your willingness to reveal a truth with the need
for a person to know.

There are many things that are your business and do not
properly belong to others. Just because they ask you a
question does not mean you must answer it.

Now, having covered the aspect of having the courage to
tell truth and reality, and where not to, let's at
least turn the tables around and have you begin looking
at information you receive from others. Do you have
reason to doubt?

I asked a friend to attend a meeting with me. He had
advised me he was doing nothing that evening and that
he would get back to me. Later he phoned to tell me he
was going to be working 14 hours that day and would not
be home at the time of the meeting. On my way to the
meeting guess who I passed along the way?

Why didn't he just come out and tell me he did not want
to attend. Why the charade? Let yourself want nothing
so bad that you fail to observe what is going on around
you. Beware, sometimes ...

It Won't Fly!

Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing…
A Few Basic Essentials To Keep In Mind
PART 10 of 12

Follow the first aid instructions on the container.
They will tell you whether or not to make yourself
throw up (vomit). Call the poison control center (front
of phone book) if you are in doubt. Rarely will you get
to this point. What you could more easily happen is
that you become dizzy, lightheaded, and maybe
nauseated. You might have double vision. So do some
detective work. Recall where you were: what you did.
What was around you? Please read the labels before you
use these products. Just because you have used the
product for years, doesn’t mean you can never get sick
from it.

I often advise people who don’t want to use these
harmful products, to use baking soda: alone, with water
or with vinegar. Those are great cleaners and safe to
use. There are several really interesting books with
lots of helpful hints and uses. There are 563 links on
Google! One interesting, but important scenario some
people overlook is the paid cleaners who come into your
home. They often bring their own products. Check out
what they use. And make sure they rinse all areas well.
Tell them not to mix products. Allow them a lot of
ventilation as they work.

Let me recap what the cleaners, disinfectants, and
sterilants do. The cleaning agents remove all dirt.
Soap and water is the mainstay of any home. It is
inexpensive and harmless. Often the water action alone
takes most germs away. Disinfectants remove harmful
microorganisms (germs/pathogens) and often their
friction action will clean as well. Lastly, sterilants
remove all microorganisms. All items must be thoroughly
cleaned before disinfection or sterilization can take
place. And cleaning for the most part is all you need
to do in a home environment. Try to avoid using
antibacterial soaps. You don’t know what bacteria you
need to fight. And if your body is already desensitized
to this group of antibiotics, it may not respond
properly when you have a real infection. If you do need
to use a disinfectant in your home, consult with a
qualified health care professional for the most current
products required. Chances are you will never need
this, but if you do, certain special equipment and
processes are required. All such chemicals are foreign
to your body. Consider this possibility: wouldn’t one
chemical mix with second one in your body and create a
third (new) one? Did you really want those in your
body?

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

"My God, that man can walk!" Mae was puffing
from exertion as Ng was moving quickly up high
rocky interfaces. "Ng, slow down."

Ng got the message. He had forgotten his
charges were not Mongol. He smiled.

They had begun their journey into the trails
of the Himalayas. Mae and Susan cleared all manner
of snow away so things were dry. They also kept
their own environment warm, so even Ng was
perspiring.

The trail they were following was all rock.
There were no clear indications this was even a
trail. Some places were high, hard climbs, others
were through running streams of freezing cold
water and still others were hard climbs downhill.

Where, on the plains, one could expect to walk
at a speed of four miles an hour, they were lucky
sometimes to do a mile in four hours. This was
rough terrain made the more so by freezing cold
temperatures, hard blowing winds and slippery snow
covered hand and footholds.

Ng and the ladies were very glad the ladies
had created a managed environment. The removing of
snow, the warm temperature and the removal of the
biting wind made things so much easier it was hard
to imagine.

Ng stopped after about four hours. They were
on a high point and so they took a look back to
where they had been. Mae and Susan were
astonished. They could see their last camp site
less than two miles away, as the crow flies. Yet
they had walked and climbed this past four hours
what seemed like a very long way.

What Mae and Susan did not take into
consideration was they were now moving a lot in
the third dimension. Moving from side to side or
back and forth was one thing but now they had
added up and down. It was this up and down that
was taking time.

Ng had them stop and take a drink. They
munched on some jerky style of food Ng had brought
along. "Trail get easier up ahead. It is tough
when we have to climb but there are long stretches
where the path is a gentle rise."

"How far is it to Lhasa, Ng?"

"Miss Susan it take us most of the month.
There are some tricky places, dangerous places. We
must move slow and sure over those. If we keep up
this pace we will come to a rest stop late in the
day."

"That sounds good. This is the roughest part
of our journey so far. We have not had to go
through mountains before."

"That you have walked so far has been good for
you. You are in good shape. Without that you would
not do well on these trails. Man has never
developed these trails. They go over them one by
one. The land is uninhabitable and is a hard land.
The rest stop we will see tonight is there only
because of travellers. You be careful. Most on
this trail are not to be trusted."

That did not bother the ladies. They were well
used to people trying to take advantage of them.

It was at that point Ng realized what he had
said. He knew they would be able to take care of
themselves. He rose and began to move up the
trail. The ladies were right behind him.

All day they went up, not as in mountain
climbing, but always up and up. The air was
getting thinner and more difficult to breath.
Both Mae and Susan noticed they were breathing
twice as much.

Ng had slowed his pace considerably. He
realized it was not only getting later in the day
but the ladies would develop altitude sickness if
he pushed them too hard. He wanted to get to the
rest stop because he felt it would be a good
idea to put in a couple days there to permit all
their bodies to adjust to the new elevated
condition.

The day shut down early in these mountains. By
mid afternoon the sun had crossed over the peaks
and they were deep in shadows. They were thankful
for their controlled environment because once the
sun had gone down things immediately became
colder.

Life in this land was from one extreme to
another. It was either very cold or very warm. The
cold was the dominant element though. Warm was
only once or twice a year and that not long lived.

One might think life is like that in any
mountain range in earth. No, it is not. Few places
in earth are at this elevation, are this rocky or
have this much snow. While wind blew in all
mountain ranges here it was cutting and mean. Only
the most determined lived or moved through here.
And one had to be tough minded or they would never
survive. There was no room in this land for self
pity or feeling sorry for oneself. You became
hard, like the land, or you did not survive.
Finally, just after dark, the small group
could see a light in the distance.
