What practical function do gargoyles -- the grotesque
statues that adorn medieval cathedrals -- serve?
Gargoyles were designed to serve as spouts to throw rainwater
clear of a building. Some were also intended to scare away evil
spirits, while others were designed to illustrate Bible stories.
How do birds know when to migrate?
Birds are signaled to migrate by the sun. They know it's time to
go when the ratio of sunlight to darkness signals the coming
of cold weather. Birds start preparing for the trip in early spring,
when the longer days prompt them to eat more, building up fat
deposits for the trip. Birds also pay attention to weather. Abnormal
weather patterns can delay them, since they rely on air pressure
and cold fronts to help push them along.

Can You Spell That For Me?
VoIP may yet sweep the nation and upend the
telecommunications industry, but most Americans still
are unfamiliar with it.
According to a new survey from TNS Telecoms, only 26%
of US households with Internet access report having
previously heard of Voice-over-IP service even after
it was described to them.
"Consumers are receptive to the service quality, cost
savings and other benefits VoIP has to offer," says
Charles White, VP Of TNS Telecoms. "But companies need
to make an increased effort to communicate these
benefits to the marketplace."
Mr. White is correct, but he may be putting the matter
too mildly.
A number of recent studies have forecast a strong VoIP
growth as an example, TIA and Wilkofsky Gruen and
Associates estimate that VoIP access in the US will
rise from 6.5 million lines at the end of 2004 to 19.2
million by the end of 2007 and millions in ad dollars
are being spent. But awareness of VoIP technology and
services has not penetrated into the marketplace.
The level of consumer awareness is virtually unchanged
from nearly a year ago, when a poll by Pew Internet &
American Life Project found that 27% of Internet users
in the U.S. had heard of VoIP, which translates into
roughly 17% of the US population.
Even a year before that, in mid-2003, when Knowledge
Systems and Research polled consumers concerning their
awareness of "New Technologies," an average of 32% of
them were aware of VoIP.
No gain in consumer awareness for two years has to be a
matter of great concern to VoIP providers. But that may
be about to change. Vonage has been an aggressive
advertiser and has seen rapid growth. As other
companies roll out VoIP services and add their voices
to the marketing mix, consumer awareness is likely to
grow.

Aneurysms
A Leak In Your Circulatory System
PART 3 of 9
What ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN AN ANEURYSM: (AN'u-rizm)
Somewhere, somehow a bulge-like defect happens. It can look
much like an over-inflated inner tube. And they are dangerous
because they may burst or they can leak slowly. Mosby's
describes an aneurysm "as a localized dilation of the wall of
a blood vessel, often caused by atherosclerosis and
hypertension. Not as frequently, it can be a congenital
(present before birth) weakness of or in the vessel wall. It
can also be caused by infection or by trauma. In older
people it is common in peripheral vessels of limbs, usually
in the legs. These may rupture and cause hemorrhage or a
thrombus (clot). It is a sac-like bulge on one side of an
artery usually arising at an arterial branching." In
other words, the garden hose has a weakness and may spring a
leak! Rarely will it have a weakness in all of it, but it could
have several weak spots. But as with your garden hose, one
"break" in the system can cause a lot of grief. This can happen
in the brain, the heart, and in your extremities. But the
significance of the location is the amount of damage it can do.
Some parts of the body are far more vital to its survival and
health than others.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The keep came over to see what was up. He had
not seen any fire or stove. He knew not how the
three of them had prepared hot food. Neither did
he recognize what the ladies were eating. He also
noticed they were dry and not favoring their feet.
There was something strange about this group. The
keep thought he best stay by himself.
"There is one more day of hard going then we
will have an easy journey. We must cross a big ice
field tomorrow. It is dangerous because sometimes
there are deep crevasses hidden by bridges of very
little snow. We must tie ourselves together and we
must use your staves to poke our way so we can
ensure solid footing. It will be slow going for
another day, but you will not get wet."
The ladies knew they could set things up so
there would be no danger. They spoke of this to
Ng. "Would you be willing to trust us on our
journey tomorrow? We can set it up so there will
be no danger for us and we can simply walk free
and without risk."
"I will trust you. We go your way." Ng knew by
now the ladies had the power to do what they
wanted. He did not understand it but he trusted
it.
They, exhausted, slept.
The following morning Ng, as was his pattern,
was up early. He was always the first on the
trail, even at home, when there was something to
be done. He well recognized that an early start
usually meant a successful day.
He waited for a while and then woke the
ladies. It was time to go. The keep was not awake.
Mae and Susan caused the keep to have a never
ending supply of oil for his lamps and for his
cooking. He did not know that yet and it would be
a while before he recognized his new condition.
The time between the ladies being here and him
realizing his new "oil" condition would be such
that he would not tie the two together. He would
simply have a miracle he would soon tell others
about.
The ladies rose, stretched, yawned and
prepared to leave. Ng was always anxious to be on
the road.
Outside the wind was blowing and snow was
flying. That could happen any day of the year at
this elevation. This day would not be pleasant if
this kept up. Mae and Susan immediately set up
their own environment, which included Ng. For 40
feet in all directions there was a warm, wind
free, snow free zone within which they walked. Ng
turned to look at the ladies.
"Ng, when we get to the ice field we will
cause our path to be rock solid and it will have
no danger to us at all. You are to walk as if you
were on dry land and solid footing."
"I do this."
The journey this day was much more pleasant.
Because of the warmth and no need to be careful
they were able to move three or four times as fast
as Ng had thought. They passed the rest area on
the other side of the glacier and continued on
their way.
"The rest of the way no danger, just long. We
cover much ground today. We go twice as far as
normal, but we not yet near next rest area. We may
not reach there tonight so we must find a place to
bed down."
"That will be no trouble. We can stop
anyplace. We will make it warm, free of snow and
wind and we can have a small fire. We are not so
tired tonight and it would be nice to relax around
a fire."
"Where you find wood here?" Ng had asked the
question but the instant it was out of his mouth
he knew the answer. The ladies did not respond.
That is what they did. Plus the ladies also
created beds that moulded to each of their bodies.
Ng would be surprised tonight.
The fire was a small one yet it had that
magnetic appeal all camp fires have. They sat
around it and talked for hours before turning in.
The ladies marveled. Here they were nearly at
the top of the world, in the middle of the
Himalayas, on one of the highest passes, with a
Mongol friend, enjoying the night around a fire.
This was one night they would remember always.
Ng, too, from his perspective, found the
evening one to remember. In all his journeys
across this pass, he had never felt so
comfortable, warm, dry while in the midst of a
raging storm.
They slept the night without incident. Upon
waking they discovered the storm had broken after
leaving two feet of snow everywhere.
"This is why it not wise to travel this early
in the season. This kind of storm can come up and
bury you in snow. It make our travel hard today
getting through the deep snow."
