What makes San Francisco so foggy?

The fog hanging over San Francisco is caused by the
contrast between ocean and air temperatures. The city
is foggiest during the summer.

Where is the foggiest place in America?

Cape Disappointment, a nob of land on Washington state's
coast at the mouth of the Columbia River, lives up to its name.
It was named by a British captain who, thanks to fog, couldn't find
the mouth of the river said to exist there. Fog covers the land an
average of 106 days per year.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!

The first credit card was issued by the Diners' Club. Back in
1949, when Frank McNamara was at a restaurant, he realized
he did not have enough money to pay for his meal, and had to
call his wife to bail him out. He then came up with the idea
of the Diners Club, which later issued the first credit card.

Tips And Tidbits

Your Identity, Open to All
By Xeni Jardin

A search for personal data on ZabaSearch.com -- one of
the most comprehensive personal-data search engines on
the net -- tends to elicit one of two reactions from
first-timers: terror or curiosity. Which reaction often
depends on whether you are searching for someone else's
data, or your own.

ZabaSearch queries return a wealth of info sometimes
dating back more than 10 years: residential addresses,
phone numbers both listed and unlisted, birth year,
even satellite photos of people's homes.

ZabaSearch isn't the first or only such service online.
Yahoo's free People Search, for example, returns names,
telephone numbers and addresses. But the information is
nothing more than what's been available for years in
the White Pages.

Far more personal information is available from data
brokers, including aliases, bankruptcy records and tax
liens. That access typically requires a fee, however,
which has always been a barrier to the casual snooper.

But ZabaSearch makes it easier than ever to find
comprehensive personal information on anyone.

ZabaSearch may give away some data for free, but it
charges for additional information -- like background
checks and criminal history reports, which may or may
not be accurate. The company also plans to sell ads and
other services on the search site, much like Google or
Yahoo.

Launched in February, the site has emerged during a
period of heightened sensitivity about data privacy and
identity theft, now among the fastest-growing crimes in
America. Numerous security breaches involving personal
records have occurred in recent months. Earlier this
week, media giant Time Warner admitted it lost the
social security numbers of 600,000 employees. Other
incidents of bungling or virtual burglary have
compromised hundreds of thousands of personal records
held by ChoicePoint, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and
Lexis-Nexis, among others.

Critics say ZabaSearch is exploiting the lack of data
privacy in America. We unknowingly leak personal
information in countless ways, the argument goes, and
neither the government nor private industry provides
effective ways for us to control how our digital
identities are shared or sold.

Plus, an odd, often-reported connection between the
company's chairman and members of the Heaven's Gate
suicide cult hasn't helped make the company's image any
more friendly.

But the founders of ZabaSearch maintain they're not
villains, and that their service is a step toward data
democratization. If your information is already out
there, the logic goes, at least now you'll know about
it.

Aneurysms
A Leak In Your Circulatory System
PART 6 of 9

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU SUSPECT ONE? How
is an aneurysm detected? An aneurysm may be small
and not cause symptoms. Symptoms of aneurysms in
the brain can include impaired vision and headaches.
A person who has a ruptured cerebral aneurysm may
complain of the sudden onset of "the worst headache
of my life."

Symptoms or the lack of them depend on where it's
located. Pain is a common symptom. Another is throbbing
at the site. Sometimes you can even see it throbbing
and feel it! Of course you wouldn't be able to feel it
in the brain. Physical exam, ultrasound examination,
and CT scan are used to evaluate aneurysms.

The larger the aneurysm becomes, the more likely it
is to burst. Several tools using imaging techniques can
be used for diagnostic purposes. X-ray angiography is
the examination of the aorta by injecting a dye
(contrast media) through a thin flexible tube
(catheter) that has been placed into it. Then a
quick session of X-ray images is done to see blood
flow. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT or
computed tomography are also used to detect aneurysms.

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create a moving
picture of the heart. This resulting picture is much
more detailed than and X-ray image and involves no
radiation exposure. If the aneurysm appears to be
relatively small and located in a fairly safe area, a
doctor will want to check it regularly to see if it's
enlarging.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Mae awoke with a sense of forboding. One look
at Sue and she knew Sue felt it too. The pair of
them weren't sure what it was but they went
searching.

Ng was up and ready to travel.

"Ng, let's just stay here today, or at least
for a while. There is about to be a major
avalanche further down the valley. A mountain is
about to give way and it will fill up the valley.
We don't want to be under it when it happens."

"How you know this, Miss Mae?"

"Both Sue and I awoke this morning feeling
something was about to happen. We knew we would be
in danger if we began walking. This way we are
permitted to see it in safety. I am of the
thinking it will occur right around noon sometime,
when we would have been right under it."

There wasn't much to do while waiting. They
talked, had a bite to eat, went on short walks and
returned. Ng was beginning to believe the ladies
had made a mistake.

Noon came and went. There was no sign of
danger. Ng began to insist they take up their gear
and go.

The ladies knew the danger was imminent. They
took up their staves and Ng took up his pack. Just
as they were doing that the ground began to move.
They were swaying back and forth, right where they
were. The ground was quivering. Then the noise
caught up to the activity.

A mighty roar came rushing up the valley. It
was a deafening sound over which one could hear
nothing.

Mae and Susan immediately put up a shield
around the three of them to prevent any rocks and
other material from hitting them. They were not in
the direct path of the avalanche but there was a
cloud of dust coming at them that would have
buried them.

Ng saw it coming and began to run. Mae
hollered at him in a way that made him halt right
where he stood. You couldn't hear anything over
the noise but Mae had a way of reaching right into
your head. Ng understood.

It seemed like ages, they waited and watched.
The dust and smaller gravel was flying all around
them. It was only seconds, two minutes at the
most, but when you were there and in it the time
seemed to move in slow motion.

The dust began to settle, the finer stuff
blowing off with the winds.

Ng couldn't believe his eyes. The valley below
had not become a mountain to scale. Where they
were going to have a nice easy walk today it was
now to be a strenuous climb up and over the
rocks that blocked the way.

Earlier that morning one could look for two or
three miles down into the valley. Now a mountain
on one side of it had collapsed. It had let go of
nearly half the mountain and it slid down into the
valley. The force of it had the rocks rolled half
way up the mountain on the other side. They
scraped and gouged their way up the mountain even
weakening that mountain.

It was a good thing there were no villages
there, or people living there. It was also
unlikely there was anyone coming up the trail this
early in the season. No one was killed.

However the trail was changed, considerably.
The mountain had given way for nearly a mile of
its length. With the downward leaning of the
valley it had spread out even further. The rubble
and rock the travelers had to traverse was now
more than a mile wide, or long.

The danger was now over. All the rock had
settled and the winds blowing up the valley had
taken all the dust away.

"Wow!" Other than that Ng was speechless.

They began their walk to look and investigate.
Upon surveying the new condition they all agreed
they best stay where they were that night, get a
good rest and tackle this new condition in the
morning when they were fresh.

That is what they did. All were in awe of the
power of Mother Nature. This was an impressive
sight.

The morning broke clear and bright with no
warnings of danger to bother Mae and Susan. Having
a quick bite to eat they were on their way.

They had about a half mile to walk before they
came to any of the big boulders. One of the first
things they noticed was they could see more of the
sky today. That mountain, when it fell, left a
gaping hole where it once was and it let in much
more light.

Yesterday the trio had noticed an absence of
birds and other sounds. Today, though not many,
birds were present. The glaciers could once more
be heard moving and the winds were back, though
today they were only breezes. That would be the
case until the sun warmed up the rock it could
reach, then the winds could get to be rather
furious.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Arriving back at the dorm late one evening, my roommate
explained that she had gotten lost in the school
library. No one was surprised, since the
library is large and has a confusing layout.

When I asked her how long it took her to find an exit,
she admitted she hadn't actually found the exit
herself. She'd used an emergency phone to call for
help.

Puzzled, I asked, "How did your rescuers find you if
you didn't know where you were?"

"Easy," she said. "I started reading titles of books
around me, and they located my position from the card
catalogue.
