TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Do opossums eat snakes?

Where is the graveyard of the Atlantic?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How many types of marsupials live in the United States?

The opossum is it. Other marsupials live in South America
and Australia, but the opossum was the only one adventurous
enough to venture north millions of years ago when a land bridge
between North America and South America existed. The little
critter is still heading North and already inhabits Ontario, Canada.

What protects opossums from snakes?

Opossums may have other predators to worry about, but they
should feel pretty safe around snakes. They are one of only a few
animals (others include woodchucks and raccoons) that produce
chemicals that render snake venom harmless. Scientists have
tried to discover just how this chemical defense works, in hopes
of creating a vaccine to protect humans from snake bites, but so
far have not been successful.

Study: Teens With Mobiles More Likely To Go Online
Daily

TEENS WITH CELL PHONES ARE significantly more likely
than their non-cell-carrying peers to use the Internet
every day, read newspapers and magazines, and listen to
the radio, according to a study of 400 teenagers
conducted by WPP Group's MindShare Online Research. The
study also found that cell phone use by teens jumped 43
percent in 2004 compared to 2003. Older teens are also
much more likely to carry cell phones than younger
ones, with seven out of 10 kids ages 16 or 17 owning
mobile phones, compared to half of the 14- and
15-year-olds and one out of four 13-year-olds.
Teenagers who carry cell phones tend to use them
heavily; 83 percent use their phones every day, and 64
percent use them several times a day or more.--David

Google Tests Tool To Speed Up Internet

GOOGLE WEDNESDAY ANNOUNCED THE BETA
release of Google Web Accelerator, a free downloadable
application that the search giant says will enable Web
surfers who use Firefox or Internet Explorer to view Web
pages more rapidly. The application runs in the background
on a user's desktop, and utilizes Google servers and the
users' own PCs to "pre-fetch" Web sites, so that when
the user chooses to access them, they appear more
quickly. The program also adds a toolbar item to the
user's browser, displaying how much time the
application has saved by loading the pages faster. --

Diabetic Clinics And A Few
Concerns To Share
PART 1 of 6

I have just finished participating in a series of local
clinics on diabetes. This series was labeled “diabetic
education and screening”. The clinics were sponsored by
a major food chain and its in-store pharmacies. It was
very interesting to note the interest and questions of
both the pharmacy staff and the clients in each
different location. Levels of participation varied from
store to store. It was quite remarkable. Affluence
didn’t come into this: locations certainly did. All
clinic hours were identical. Just the locations were
different: different sections of a large metropolitan
city.

The purpose of each clinic was to do blood sugar
screening and diabetic teaching for the general public.
Many of these people just wanted to know if they were
healthy or “at risk”. As I have found out in many
public places, if I haul out my blood pressure cuff and
stethoscope, I attract people. There seems to be
something comforting or reliable about the old cuff. At
this clinic series, this didn’t happen. People were shy
to come forward and have their blood pressure taken. We
invited them to join us…then they wouldn’t leave!

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Mae and Susan just stood there, their mouths
wide open in awe of the sight. The sun was shining
from the south west onto the city. Mae and Susan
were approaching almost from straight east. They
were standing on a hill that overlooked Lhasa.

The sun was hitting the front face of
buildings leaving long shadows behind them all of
which seemed to frame and accent the mighty
monastery up on the mountain. It was the sight
both Mae and Susan had seen many times in
magazines.

Not having seen any community for months,
this particular picture would stay in their minds
forever. The city appeared quiet from this vantage
point, although the ladies were quite sure the
inhabitants were busy going about their daily
business.

The sun shone on the monastery face in a way
that rendered the building overpowering,
overshadowing. This, at least at one time, was the
absolute center of Buddhism, certainly of the
Tibetan arm thereof. The monastery was so
commanding it seemed to reach out and touch
everything. It was a beautiful sight.

Some of the buildings were low with flat roofs
like the girls had seen elsewhere, but most were
of a peaked style roof to rid them of snow. From
where the ladies stood there was no evidence of
"organization". There wasn't a straight street to
be seen, nor a house that appeared to be placed
straight on a lot. Indeed, there didn't even
appear to be "lots". It appeared buildings were
placed merely where there was room, some even
going around other buildings to gain more room.

Buildings appeared to be of similar
construction, but from time to time you could spot
what, in America, would be called a "soddy", a
house or building made from sod.

Prayer wheels and prayer flags were in
evidence all over the city. They would be seen
flying from portals and along walkways everywhere.
If one didn't know what they were it would be
possible to think there was a celebration going
on.

Ng wanted to go into the city, but Mae and
Susan wanted to stay here just a little while
longer that they might absorb the mood of the
city, the people, the daily life. They sensed
things were just fine. They felt no oppression but
the people going about their tasks as they did
everyday.

Life may have been hard in this land, even in
this city, but the mood of the people was happy.
The city emitted a sense of busyness, happiness
and progressive behavior.

The monastery was clearly the significant
feature of the area, standing a good 1000 feet
above the town and most of that was vertical,
unscalable cliffs. If there was not a winding
trail or road visible on one side it would be easy
to think one could not reach this marvelous
ediface.

As the ladies observed the city there appeared
to be people walking under burdens they carried on
their shoulders or heads. Some were pushing or
pulling wagons or carts. There were no vehicles in
evidence, much. There were some military vehicles
but not many others. Under the right circumstances
a special vehicle could make it from this city to
the border post the three of them had passed
through.

Finally the two women were prepared to descend
into the city. Before they did they decided to
dress as Mongol women, accompanying Ng. The
presence of the army in the city could create some
difficulty if one didn't fit in.

They went down the hill and onto a plain that
led to Lhasa, The Forbidden City. By nightfall
they were entering the city, walking narrow
streets lined with prayer wheels. Anyone they
passed was also walking. They did not draw much
attention from passersby so their appearance must
have been acceptable.

Ng took them to an eating place. There they
rested and ate. The people serving them recognized
immediately they were not from the area. Their
dress was easily identifiable as Mongol and there
were not many in this city, except travelers.

Ng began to speak of the mountain slide. It
attracted much attention. Everyone in the
establishment came over to listen. News like this
would travel fast. There were not many trails
leading to Lhasa and when one was so severely
affected, it was news.

Ng spoke of taking one full day to cross the
slide. He spoke of being right there and seeing
it, hearing it and feeling the rush of air and
dust it created. People were in awe of him. He
liked being the center of attention.

The ladies liked being here. This was the
destination they had planned of seeing some two
and a half years earlier when they began.

HA! HA! HA!

As my husband, the county highway commissioner, was
driving to the hospital for treatment of his painful leg, he
decided to use the valet parking service so he wouldn't
have to walk far. Staring at his official-looking vehicle,
one of the valets asked my husband if he was
driving a government car.

"Why, yes," my husband replied, surprised by the question.
"In fact it's an unmarked police car."

"Wow!" the young man said, sliding behind the wheel.
"This will be the first time I've been in the front seat."
