What causes the rough weather around the coast of
North Carolina?
Why so many hurricanes off the coast of North Carolina?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Do opossums eat snakes?
Well, why not? If they try, but can't eat you, at least you can
eat them. Opossums feed freely on such deadly venomous
snakes as copperheads, water moccasins, and even rattlesnakes.
They say that in the great food chain of life there's always a
bigger fish...
Where is the graveyard of the Atlantic?
The coast of North Carolina, beset by violent weather (such as
hurricanes) and shifting shoals, has earned the nickname
"graveyard of the Atlantic." Hundreds of ships have been
lost there.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
In 1988, the largest ice cream sundae in history was made.
It was made in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and weighed in at
over 24 tons.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
-----------------
They Settle For Scraps!
I sit in front of my office window and look out in awe
and amazement at the bird feeder. It amuses me much.
We, of course, put out feed for the birds. They have
come to know when and how I do it and they know
to "stick around" when they see me because I have
goodies.
Additionally, I think they tell their friends. The flock
keeps getting bigger and bigger so I am sure they let
their friends know where the food is. And their friends
are not only their same type, they tell everybody.
It makes me laugh really for I see within the system
the "habit structure" by which these birds are governed.
It really is humorous when you look at it.
It puts me in mind of the time I was in India. While
looking at a part of Indian history a boy came up to
us and was asking for a stick of gum. I gave him one.
You know what he did? He turned around and
whistled. Suddenly there were twenty of them
all asking for gum.
I know not where these kids came from but they
certainly all knew the "signal" and the "plan". The
"front runner" got results and WOW! - did he ever
let everybody else know.
I laughed. Not only should I have known, but the
"system" works fantastic. They learn young.
But why do THEY SETTLE FOR SCRAPS?
Do yourself a favor and go buy and read Jonathon
Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach. After that get
the book The Saga Of Pinehill by Ken Darby. Both
books will give you a glimpse into what is possible.
That is what all these situations remind me of, the
seagulls fighting and squawking on the beach for
scraps. The human race is like that too.
Peer pressure, habit structure and ignorance keep
us from what our Maker WANTS to give us. We can
all have peace and prosperity when we stop thinking
we are so darn important we can't stop what we are doing.
It is in the quiet we find these fruits. It is in the
knowing that we are rewarded. It is in the moments
when you can meet your real self that you gain power.
Let not fear be at the controls - let courage direct you.
Don't be afraid of what is behind that door just because
you haven't been through it before. Sometimes opening
a new door is like opening an old chest in the attic - it is
filled with treasure.
The treasure you are looking for is peace and prosperity,
with a little adventure thrown in.

Diabetic Clinics And A Few
Concerns To Share
PART 2 of 6
My job was to test their blood sugar (glucose) levels
and interpret the results for them. It also included
blood pressure monitoring, and discussion on general
health problems, such as foot care, general and
personal hygiene. Lastly, I had to evaluate the short
medical history they had completed. If they were
already on diabetic treatments, I had to discuss their
concerns or send them for further assessments to their
health care practitioner. The pharmacist evaluated
their meds and the dietician provided very in-depth
food and nutrition counseling. It was a good team. I
wish we could do more of these as we found ways to help
many people
those who wanted to know. Many people
prefer not to know.
I wanted to voice a few concerns of things I discovered
in these clinics. It is imperative that you take
control of your own health. You have to learn what
keeps you healthy and what holds you back. I came
across many, many people who were on preventative
blood pressure medications: not just one, but several.
I know there are different ways of treating elevated
blood pressures (hypertension). But please, before you
take the medications, try to control it by some changes
in your own lifestyle. A little exercise, a short walk,
a few different food choices can make all the
difference to your health. It is not difficult to do.
But it does need some determination and knowledge on
your part.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

That they were in Lhasa almost seemed
anti-climatic. They had thought of this so long
that now being here was to take away their goal,
their objective. As nice as it was, that left a
bit of a hole in their psyche they knew they would
have to change soon.
Ng was busy with his story so the girls stood
to go outside. Mae had earlier told him that when
he was done, all he had to do was think of them
and, in his mind, call. Ng, by thought, agreed.
They stepped outside to view the city.
This was not a large city by North American
standards. The pair of them did not yet realize
the population of the city was about 200,000.
What they had seen from the hill and of the
people and buildings as they walked into the city
was what the locals call the "old city". As the
two ladies progressed they soon came to some
modern architecture and vehicles. The streets
didn't appear to be much straighter but the hustle
and bustle was more like a place back home.
China had been developing Tibet. They also,
now, were willing to have tourists come to town,
having modern hotel facilities to accommodate
them. All this was a far cry from what Ng had told
them and what they expected.
There was evidence of power, gas and
telephone. Television antennas and satellite
dishes could be seen. As they moved toward the
center of the city the buildings became taller,
with many being three storeys. Some of those
housed offices on the second and third storeys and
shops on the main floor. Others had residences on
the second and third floor, with shops on the
main.
The street was busy with people walking
everywhere. Many were dressed in bright clothing
or at least had at least one article of clothing
that was bright and colorful. They all had one
thing in common. There were no shorts, sleeveless
blouses, men without jackets. All wore clothing
that befitted the continual chill that the
elevation of 12,000 feet demanded. Lhasa had
mountains all around it for it was located in a
fairly large valley.
That tourists were now welcome did not seem to
be a point recognized much by the Mongol. He was
all business. The majority of migrants or tourists
would likely arrive from the south and not from
the way Ng and the two ladies had traveled.
The two decided to change the style of their
clothing to appear more like the locals, rather
than the distinctive dress of the Mongol.
Ng called. Mae answered, telling him they were
in the center of the city where things were vastly
different in style and business than the old city
with which Ng was familiar. She advised him to
stand just outside the eating establishment, that
they would be walking up the street to get him.
Before long Ng saw them coming, although he
had to look more than twice to be sure. He saw
they had changed clothing, but he recognized their
gait.
"Ng, have you ever been downtown? The city is
much larger than we could see from the hill. It is
a bustling modern city, full of people from all
over and includes hotels, motor vehicles and
tourist facilities. Have you ever seen any of
these?"
"No, Miss Mae. I am not a man of the city. I
am a man of the plains. I need no vehicle, but a
horse only. I know who I am and I wish not to
change."
"I admire your sense of self, Ng. However, if
you like, we will take you through the city. It is
not that we know the city Ng, but we are quite
familiar with the ways of cities like this. Would
you like to see it?"
"I think first we should get a place to stay
them we can move about."
"That sounds like a very practical thing to
do. Do you want to stay where you are familiar
with the ways of the people or would you like to
try a new and fully modern hotel?"
"Miss Mae. I am not sure of this way you call
modern. I know where my father stayed and where I
stay when I come. I like to go there."
Mae and Sue agreed. They both knew that Ng was
quite uncomfortable amongst people, places and
things he did not understand. All he really wanted
to do while he was here was to acquire things for
his family and be on his way back to them.
"Ng, you have a long wait before you return to
your family, if you want us to take you back. We
will stay with you for a while and all three of us
can explore the city together. But you might want
to stretch your mind and comfort level a little so
you can show your boys this city when you bring
them. I imagine you will do that one day."
"Yes, Miss Mae. I will look at the city with
you. One problem I have is I have no money with
which to buy anything. A Mongol trades for what he
needs and that isn't much. We can raise a horse
and trade it for all the things we need for more
than a year.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
"There is a time in every man's education when he
arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that
imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for
better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide
universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn
can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that
plot of ground which is given to him to till." -? Ralph
Waldo Emerson

HA! HA! HA!
As a new Ensign, I was assigned duty at the Naval
Observatory in Washington, DC, and carpooled to work
with a veteran Marine sergeant.
One afternoon, I showed him a pair of brown shoes I had
purchased to go with my khaki uniform. He examined the
leather carefully. "Let me take these home,"
he said, "and I'll show you a real Marine Corps shine."
The next day I wore my old shoes, expecting to switch
them with the ones
the sergeant was polishing. From a grocery bag, Sarge
pulled out the right shoe, shining like glass. "This is
the way a Marine shines a shoe," he said. "Now all you
have to do is polish the left one to look like it."
