TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What is semaphore signaling?

When is semaphore signaling used?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How many ships per month crashed off the coast of
North Carolina in the nineteenth century?

Now, we have radar and satellites to help us navigate the
coast. But in the nineteenth century, about two ships a month
foundered on the Outer Banks. In August 1899, a hurricane
sank six ships and pushed seven more ashore in one
two-day period.

Who invented the peace symbol?

The Direct Action Committee, a group pushing for nuclear
disarmament, invented the peace symbol in 1958. The forked
symbol is actually a composite of the semaphore signals "N" and
"D," to stand for nuclear disarmament.

Google Acquires Mobile Social Network Service
Friday, May 13, 2005
SEARCH GIANT GOOGLE THIS WEEK acquired Dodgeball.com, a
mobile social networking service started by two
graduate students who describe themselves as "Google
superfans." The site allows users to set up a list of
their friends, and then text message where they plan to
be that evening. When users log in via mobile phones,
the service informs them where their contacts are.
After the acquisition, Dodgeball.com adopted Google's
privacy and terms of service, and is allowing members
to delete their accounts within 14 days to prevent
Google from having access to their account information.

Diabetic Clinics And A Few
Concerns To Share
PART 4 of 6

In reviewing their meds, I would then refer them back
to their doctor, with my BP reading or concerns about
their side effects. Please don’t get me wrong. I have
worked with many great doctors. They have a tough job
to do. Our culture wants instant results, with no
inconvenience…yesterday. But any drug you put into your
body reacts with both your body’s chemistry and the
drugs. That is what their purpose is. But they also
react with each other, and you may not like the
results. Let me give you an example I often use. If you
mix flour, eggs, and milk, you get one (delicious)
“pudding” that many people serve along with their roast
beef. But take that same flour, eggs, milk, and now add
yeast; you get a totally different result. Then add
other ingredients, and the results are different again.
If this is happening in nature, don’t you think it
might happen in your body? So if you have a
prescription filled, please take the time to read any
accompanying information. Ask about side effects.
Someone has to have them. I also teach people that if
they cannot live with the possible side effects or
complications of any treatment, they need to stop and
assess their perceived risk. These side effects or
complications, by law, have to be listed. They happen
to real people like you and me. They are there to warn
you that it might be possible for you to get these
potentially harmful results as well.

This clinic to my way of thinking had all the right
ingredients: pharmacist, registered dietician,
registered nurse, display of foods, handouts of current
information, snack displays and a nutrition/cookbook.
The dietician prepared a very appetizing and appealing
display of foods for a diabetic diet. This same food
information would help with hypertension and high
cholesterol. What does that means? That food is crucial
in your search for health. I used to tell newly
diagnosed patients in my hospital days that if you had
to have an illness, choose diabetes. It would be
controlled by food (diet) and everyone in your family
would know how to eat a healthy way. Everyone has to
watch what went into their mouths. It is essentiality
the only way to get nutrients into your body and to
have them change into energy and become part of your
metabolism. Along with water and air, you don’t need
more.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Mae bounced up and was ready for the day. She
was refreshed, not so much by the sleep but by her
revelations and subsequent decisions.

The pair of them left the room and went
downstairs to the common lobby/eating area. There
were not many in the room so the ladies had their
pick of tables. They were back to their regular
dress now and while that made the host open his
eyes a little, he did recognize them from the
night before.

Ng came down and spotted them. He came and sat
down. They ordered some food and drink and then
began to speak of what they wanted to do today.

"Ng, if you will bear with us, we would like
to go into the new town and just poke around a
little. I think you might find it interesting.
Together we will be able to figure things out. On
the matter of you going home, please understand we
can take you back to the spot where you want to
meet Lang Tsu anytime you wish. Also remember we
know when he leaves home and where he is on the
trail, so we can get you there at the exact time
he arrives. I guess what I am saying is relax and
enjoy these next few days. Think of them as a kind
of holiday where you have nothing in particular to
do and nothing to worry about."

"I will try Miss Mae. I know you will get me
to Lang Tsu on time. It is just that I am not used
to being amongst so many people. I like the wide
open spaces. I don't like to be penned into
buildings and amongst crowds."

"We understand that Ng. We really do. We, too,
spent the winter on the steppes and have come to
recognize their beauty. We like that too, but this
will only be a few days so we might as well make
the most of it, right?"

"I agree."

"Good. Let's eat and go exploring."

"Sue, any place you would like to see?"

"The marketplace is always interesting, and I
would like to see the monastery. Is that
possible?"

"We'll see."

Setting out Ng wanted to go to Barkhor street.
He wanted to get things for Chi Sang and the kids.
Barkhor street is one of the oldest streets in
Lhasa and is in the old town. It is filled with
stalls and shops that sell almost anything one
could imagine.

The people were from all cultures and wore all
manner of dress. The street was colorful and
bustling.

The trio walked slowly and casually amongst
the stalls. There were a lot of tourists here from
many parts of the world. Much trading was going on
and the sounds of happiness and prosperity were in
the air.

"I guess this is no longer a forbidden city.
Now the only city that can be known by that name
is in Beijing, the home of the Ming and Qing
dynasties. Lhasa has been opened up by the Chinese
and has now become a popular tourist spot. The
city, the citizens and the businesses prosper.

Following their walk through the marketplace
on Barkhor street they decided to go back to the
place where they stayed the night. It took them
nearly all day to do that trek. It wasn't that it
was a long way. It was just so interesting they
took their time.

Where they were staying could not properly be
thought of as a hotel in the modern sense of the
word. Yes there were rooms for rent on a nightly
basis, yes they catered mostly to travelers and
yes they had an eating establishment within it,
but this building was very, very old.

The thinking of the proprietors was also a
reflection of times past. The Mongols who traveled
over the mountains liked to stay here for it was a
place whose ambiance was more like their way of
life. The proprietors catered to that trade.

So Mae and Susan were quite willing to stay
here, in this "hotel" with Ng. Putting him into a
fully modern hotel where cleanliness was the order
of the day, where people waited on you and where
things were somewhat new, clean, modern, sparkly,
fresh, bright and shiny would really be like a
fish out of water.

It was far easier for Mae and Susan to adjust
than it was for Ng to do so, besides, it was this
local flavor, this thing the people did, that was
the thing Mae and Susan were looking for on this
trip. Anybody can go to the tourist spots. Few get
to see the real people of Tibet, or of China, or
of any local area. It was the real people of China
Mae and Susan had come to meet.

They had a bite to eat for supper and then
returned to the street, just to walk. Ng was
getting a little bit fidgety. Both Mae and Susan
knew he wanted to go somewhere.

"Go on Ng. Go do what you want. We will be
fine. We are tired anyway and we'll likely just go
to bed.

"Thank you Miss Susan. I want to go where my
father showed me. It is a place for men, a place
of drink. I don't think it is a place where I
should take you."

HA! HA! HA!

I was listening to a lady who called a radio pastor.
The pastor was a wise, grandfatherly gentleman who had
that calm reassuring voice that can melt all fear.

The lady, who was obviously crying, said, "Pastor, I
was born blind, and I've been blind all my life. I
don't mind so much being blind but I have some well
meaning friends who tell me that if I had more faith I
could be healed."

The pastor asked her, "Tell me, do you carry one of
those white canes?"

"Yes I do," she replied.

"Then the next time someone says that hit them over the
head with the cane," he said. "Then tell them 'If you
had more faith that wouldn't hurt!"
