What town was the first to celebrate Memorial Day?
When was Memorial Day made a national holiday?

--------------
What Greek god is Helium named after?
Helium is named after Helios, a Greek sun god, thanks to
the fact that it was first discovered in the gaseous atmosphere
surrounding the sun.
What was "Decoration Day"?
That's the name "Memorial Day" was originally known by. It was
a time set aside to honor U.S. Civil War dead by decorating their
graves (often with flowers or flags). The holiday was instituted
in May 1868 specifically to commemorate Civil War soldiers. It
has since grown to honor all those who have sacrificed their lives
in service to their country.

Everybody Saying Goodbye to 'Raymond' on CBS
Thu May 12, 2005 By Steve Gorman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. television's top-rated
family sitcom, "Everybody Loves Raymond," ends its
nine-year run on CBS next week, bringing to a close one
of the most understated success stories in recent
prime-time history.
The series, starring comedian Ray Romano as the
laconic, everyman alter ego of his off-camera self,
leaves the air Monday after 210 episodes mined from
matrimonial discord, meddling in-laws and sibling
rivalry.
As the last surviving half-hour family comedy in the
Nielsen top 10 this season, "Raymond" leaves behind no
obvious heir to a once-robust TV genre that has
steadily lost ground amid an explosion of "reality"
shows and procedural crime dramas.
The enduring success of "Raymond," which won the best
comedy Emmy in 2003, is all the more impressive given
that it thrived without calling much attention to
itself in an era of cutthroat competition and runaway
hype.
"It wasn't the buzz show, it wasn't the water-cooler
show, because it wasn't sexy or flashy or young and all
that," Romano said of the series' early struggle to
find an audience. "But the critics ... wrote good
things about it and that's why (CBS) gave it a chance."
"Everybody Loves Raymond" is ranked 10th for the season
in the latest Nielsen ratings with an average audience
of almost 17 million per week.
CBS and producers have revealed nothing about how
"Raymond" will end. Executive producer and co-creator
Phil Rosenthal says he wrote the finale 18 months ago
"because I never thought we'd go past seven seasons."
"I knew it was a good final story and I just kept it in
the drawer until we were ready," he told reporters in a
recent conference call.
WINNING FORMULA
Since its 1996 debut, the show has drawn heavily on the
real-life domestic experiences of Romano, whose
portrayal of a harried family man and sportswriter won
him the 2002 Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a
comedy series, living with his wife and kids next door
to his parents.
Romano's Ray Barone character continually finds himself
caught in the cross-fire between his sharp-tongued wife
(Patricia Heaton, who has won two Emmys for "Raymond")
and his overbearing mother (triple Emmy winner Doris
Roberts). At the same time, he takes flak from his
hard-headed father (Peter Boyle) and older brother,
Robert (two-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett). The
brother's perpetual lament that Ray has life better
than he deserves gives the show its title, which Romano
says he has always hated.
Ray's three children on the show are frequently absent
from the proceedings, especially in episodes focusing
on the social dynamics of the grown-ups.
It may have lacked the offbeat comedic innovations of
"Seinfeld," the sexy cast of "Friends" or the
self-conscious edge of "Sex and the City," but critics
consistently gave "Raymond" high marks for smart
writing and a cast of gifted actors who made it all
look easy.
The series harkened back to a traditional sitcom
formula that derived its humor from commonplace
situations that resonated with a broad swath of
viewers.
"'Everybody Loves Raymond' is a classic," said Paul
Levinson, a communications and media scholar at Fordham
University in New York. "We look at the show and we see
ourselves."
"The show in an odd sort of way existed much like the
Raymond character himself," said television historian
Robert Thompson. "He's just this guy who's doing his
job, walking through life, doing all right, not a
terribly noisy guy."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Balancing Your Diet Vs A Balanced Diet
A balanced diet doesn't mean balancing your
luscious hamburger on you lap and finding a
place to park your drink.
I don't know why we always pick on the most
famous international fast food outlet- good
marketing, I guess. In all my research, I'm just
not convinced that their food is all bad., but it
certainly isn't balanced. Aren't those fries good?
But oh so salty! Is a Tex Mex meal balanced?
Does hamburger and a soft drink make a
balanced meal? What about your favorite deli?
Nitrites? Preservatives? Then what do we need
to balance our meal?
Who knows? Scientists who are now turning
their attention to the needs of every basic cell in
our bodies . . . a process called "cellular nutrition".
This is one of the newest sciences of mainstream
medicine, called Bionutrition. Scientists are
developing great tasting, convenient ways to
fuel your body with the correct amounts and
types of macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein,
and fats).
Have you stopped to think HOW your body gets
its energy: it's fuel? There aren't many ways... nose,
mouth, and skin are the "routine" routes for most of us.
So whatever goes into the body should really bring
along nutrients that support the body's needs.
Nature insists on "balance". And the fuel you give
it provides this balance. So if your meal doesn't
provide the "balance" in nutrition, some other part
of your body gets "robbed" to bring balance.
Imbalance creates disharmony or disease. Provide
all the elements and you create harmony... and ease,
which equals health.. So what happens when your
meal isn't balanced for days, weeks, or months. . . or
ever? It creates a domino affect and results in a
major breakdown in your body's ability to function.
But lack of proper nutrition isn't the only cause of
poor health. There are lots of things in our lives
today that all contribute, but more about that
another time.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"Ng, there is a problem with man leading man
under the guise of their teachings being the only
way to God. There is but one way and that is for
every man to see, find and follow. It has nothing
whatever to do with any organized religion or
religious practice. It has only to do with each
man. It is not our lot to encourage those who are
leading men astray."
"I am glad you removed us from there for I was
in fear of an uprising."
"I know you don't mean fear, Ng. I know you
were only thinking that might occur. I know your
heart and you are a Mongol. You would rather
fight. You thrive where the odds are against you."
Ng smiled. He considered that a compliment.
"What shall we do now?" he inquired.
"We will stay in Lhasa until it is time to
meet Lang Tsu. During that time there will be two
or three monks who will seek us out to ask of us
the way. We will show them, that they may pursue
their own path, the same one we have all trodden."
Ng seemed happy with that.
As it was now past the usual supper hour they
began their walk back to the inn. It was
uneventful, but when they arrived at the inn they
noticed two military men seated at a table three
or four over from the one they had selected.
Mae and Sue recognized these men as the ones
that had been manning the border post they had
passed through. The men were looking at Ng and
looking at him. They thought they recognized him.
While the trio were eating what they had
ordered, the men came over to their table and
began speaking with Ng.
Inside Ng was a little nervous, wondering if
these men had thought he smuggled the two ladies
into Tibet. Indeed just as was the practice the
two soldiers asked to see the ladies papers. From
nowhere Mae and Susan manifested passports and
visas all properly stamped by the authorities.
"I met these people here in Lhasa. My family
knows their families. I came to Lhasa to meet with
them." Ng was telling them a lie. They seemed to
accept it.
Mae and Susan were, of course, broadcasting
love, as they always did. That alone had the
soldiers accepting of them. They really didn't
look at the papers, appearing to only want to see
if the ladies had papers. They had no real
suspicion of them being smuggled in, but had to
ask.
"Are you not the one who was at the mountain
slide when it occurred?"
"Yes," Ng replied, glad they had changed the
subject.
The soldiers gave the ladies papers back to
them. "Tell us again about the slide. We must
report it to our superiors."
Ng went through the story again. It was the
same this time as it was the first time he told
it. He did not embellish it. The event was
sensational enough. And it was supported by the
soldiers themselves having felt the rumble and
heard the noise.
When Ng had finished they thanked him and
left.
"Ng, you need not be afraid concerning us or
our presence. We are quite able to handle any
situation."
"I know. But I am man. I watch you and I
wonder how you do what you do. You told me you
would show me, yet you ask so much I do not know
if I can pay the price."
"You are an honest man Ng. For that we
appreciate you. You offer no excuses but face the
situation head on. Life would be easy if all men
did the same." Mae was thankful he looked at the
world through honest eyes.
Susan spoke up, "In other parts of the world,
maybe even here, there are those who would say one
thing but do another. They appear on the surface
as sheep but underneath are ravening wolves. One
must be conscious of the fact that the thing each
wants the most is their weakest spot. It allows
others to lead you where you don't want to go. If
all men learned that lesson life in earth would be
much different."
Supper being over they walked casually out
onto the street for a short walk before bed. The
night was clear and you could see a zillion stars.
Through the clear air it seemed there were more
stars here than anywhere in the world. In truth
they were only able to see more because the air
was thinner up here at this altitude, plus, there
was no interfering light next to them. The street
was dark.
They retired for the night.

HA! HA! HA!
A Preacher was doing his "Children's Church" sermon
where all the youngsters come down front and hear a
story. The pastor was discussing the story of Jonah.
He quoted the scriptures from Jonah, "...and the
Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon
the dry land."
When the Pastor finished the scripture quotation, he
started trying to solicit input from the youngsters to
help him complete his mini-sermon. He asked
thoughtfully, "What does the fish vomiting Jonah out on
dry land indicate to us today.
One of the youngsters spoke with great enthusiasm for
the entire congregation to hear, "It proves, even a
fish can't stomach a bad preacher!"
