TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
What's the difference between Memorial Day and
Veteran's Day?
Is it true that the Northeastern United States is about
to be overrun with billions of 17-year-old cicadas?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What town was the first to celebrate Memorial Day?
Several towns and cities claim to be the birthplace of
Memorial Day, including Macon, Georgia; Waterloo, New York;
Richmond, Virginia; and Columbus, Mississippi. This is because
the official first "Decoration Day" celebration, in 1868, was inspired
by earlier local observances of the day in several Northern and
Southern towns across the country. In 1966, the federal government,
under President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, New York,
the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo was chosen
because it had first celebrated the holiday on May 5, 1866, and
because Waterloo had made the celebration an annual event
during which local businesses closed.
When was Memorial Day made a national holiday?
Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971,
choosing the last Monday in May for its observance.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
In WWII, when allied armies reached the Rhine River the first
thing men did was pee in it. This was pretty universal from
the lowest private to Winston Churchill (who made a big show
of it). Gen. Patton had himself photographed in the act.

Sometimes We Dont Listen So Good!
A fleeing Taliban Arab, desperate for water, was
plodding through the Afghanistan desert when he saw
something far off in the distance.
Hoping to find water, he walked towards the image, only
to find a little old Jewish man sitting at a card table
with a bunch of neckties laid out on it.
The Arab asked, "I'm dying of thirst, can I have some
water?"
The man replied, "I don't have any water, but why don't
you buy a tie? Here's one that goes nicely with your
robes."
The Arab shouted, "I don't want a tie, you idiot, I
need water!"
"OK, don't buy a tie. But to show you what a nice guy
I am, I'll tell you that over that hill there, about 5
miles, is a nice restaurant. Walk that way; they have
all the water you need."
The Arab thanked him and staggered away towards the
hill and eventually disappeared.
Three hours later the Arab came crawling back to where
the man was sitting behind his card table.
The man said, "I told you, about four miles over that
hill. Couldn't you find it?"
The Arab rasped, "I found it all right. Your brother
wouldn't let me in without a tie."
Sometimes We Dont Listen So Good! You know
that's right?
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we are doing
we don't listen so good. Even when someone is speaking
to us our mind is on the project we are working on.
Oh! We "play listen". We look at that person and we
give some answers but too often we are not really in
the conversation. We give the appearance of listening
and we can even carry on a conversation but if we have
something we think needs doing we only play at
communicating because our mind is elsewhere.
In no situation does this happen more often than in
relationships that have gone on for a long time. The
desire to live together is still there but the
interests are not always precisely the same.
To correct the situation takes determination. It takes
courage, it takes love. Whatever you are working on is
important. No one around you is saying otherwise. What
they are saying is "Where are you?". You might be
sitting right in front of them when they say that. They
are saying where is your mind, where is our
togetherness?
Did you ever think that sometimes you have to listen
with your eyes? Sometimes it is necessary to open your
eyes and really see what is happening around you.
Sometimes you have to care about someone or something
other than the project you are working on. Sometimes
there are more important things. Look.
Listen to tones of voice. Listen to the timbre in
someones voice, Listen to determine what they are
feeling and fulfill their needs.
Listening is an art form and there are rules to follow:
1 Be truly interested in what someone is saying to
you.
2. Be aware of the body language. Does it match the
words?
3. Look the speaker right in the eye for sometimes the
eyes will tell you more than the mouth.
4. Actively engage in the conversation.
5. Never speak to someone without looking them in the
eye.
6. Never speak with something in or over your mouth.
7. Care about who you are speaking with.
8. Care about what they are speaking about, because,
while it may be of no real interest to you it
apparently is to them.
9. Check out the surroundings to see if there are any
clues of which you should be aware.
10. When listening, have both feet on the floor and
lean slightly toward the speaker.
11. Smile
Remember I said poor listening is often a condition in
a long term relationship? When is the last time you
listened to your Maker? Did you know your Maker is
speaking to all the time? Did you know that "intuition"
is direction from within? How often do you truly listen
to what your Maker is telling you?
Did you know, for example, that if you set your goals,
began working toward them and listened to what your
Maker was telling you several times a day through
"intuition" that your task would be easier, more
exciting, more fruitful and wonderfully more
pleasureable?

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Salt Intake: How Do You Compare?
The average person consumes about 6 to 18 grams of salt
daily. That's roughly one to three teaspoonfuls. Your
body actually needs only about 0.5 grams of salt (0.2
grams of sodium or approximately 2300 mgs of Na) each
day.
Reducing the amount of sodium you consume may help you
reduce or avoid high blood pressure. High blood
pressure, is more likely to lead to heart disease and
stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of
death in the United States.
American Heart Association sodium recommendations
Healthy American adults should reduce their sodium
intake to no more than 2300 mgs per day. This is about
1-1/4 teaspoons of sodium chloride (salt). Many foods
in their natural state contain sodium, but most sodium
in our diet is added to food while it's being
commercially processed or prepared at home. That's why
you need to be aware of both natural and added sodium
content when you choose foods to lower your sodium
intake. When buying prepared and pre-packaged foods,
read the labels.
Watch for the words soda and sodium and the symbol Na
on labels - these words show that sodium compounds are
present.
Eating more meals away from home? Controlling your
sodium intake doesn't need to spoil the pleasure of a
restaurant meal: just order selectively. Don't use the
salt shaker. Use the peppershaker or mill. Be familiar
with low-sodium foods and look for them on restaurant
menus. When you order, be specific about what you want
and how you want your food prepared. Request that they
prepare your dish without salt. Add fresh lemon juice
to fish and vegetables instead of salt. Heart Smart
options are available in many restaurants.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Over the next few days they were again the
inquisitive tourists. They passed the time
becoming familiar with Lhasa. It was really a
beautiful city and the people were very friendly.
It could have been evidence of the trio becoming
more accustomed to local custom, but they did seem
to be accepted more.
As the ladies had predicted, they did run into
a monk from the Potala Palace. He sank to his
knees as he had seen the head monk do, and he
petitioned to learn the way.
Susan bid him rise. She looked at Mae and in
that instant the pair of them agreed that Mae and
Ng would go about their business, that Susan would
work with the monk and return when she had
completed her work. Mae knew that might take a
couple days.
Mae and Ng went about their business in the
city. Ng was becoming a touch worried about time,
thinking that Lang Tsu would be on his way.
"You are right, Ng. Lang Tsu left yesterday.
He is on his way to meet with you. It will take
him yet a week, although he is traveling fast. He
likes to ride with the wind, doesn't he?"
Ng was pleased his youngest was a rider
amongst riders. He had a way with horses and Mae
was right, he loved nothing more than to put his
face into the wind and ride like a man possessed.
"He likes to ride. He is good with horses. He is a
leader, this boy. He will serve the village well."
Susan had learned the monk's name. It was Chu
Tong. He wanted to know of the path.
"You are brave woman to have spoken with the
head monk that way. He is very knowledgeable man
and we all follow faithfully until you arrive. He
teach me much."
"Yes, Chu Tong, as with all religious leaders
they do teach you just enough to make you think
they are the authority. You believe them and
follow them. Yet you seem to get nowhere. They do
not take you past a certain point. In time when
one has enough followers they come to see they
have power over the group and from that time they
are no longer interested in pursuing truth but
power only. It happens to all men because they
come to a place where they seem unable to go
further. Being frustrated in their attempts they
soon resort to the ways of man, chief among which
is selfishness. They use that power to keep you in
bondage and they are highly successful. It is the
same with all religious organizations the world
over, none are exempt."
"That night I came to see that and made the
decision to leave. I do not wish to spend my life
in that monastery, but doing the work my Maker
wants of me."
"Then you must come to see that you can follow
no organization, but your Maker within. Man and
his organizations will only hold you in bondage
and will not allow you to proceed. Only when you
leave the things of man can you proceed unto your
Maker. It is not a religious thing but a
relationship between you and your Maker."
"This I understand. I want to learn."
"Then you must learn deep into your heart and
soul the great law 'As ye sow, so shall ye reap.'
It is in the understanding of this law that you
shall protect or harm yourself. You must deliver
all things with love only for to do otherwise will
be to do harm unto your own self. Even as I spoke
the other night did you not feel love?"
"Yes."
"From that point on it is up to the receiver
to do as he wishes with the knowledge. You have
given in love. If the receivers intentions are to
harm you then that love will only empower him and
the law will turn it upon himself."
"I can see that. I believe the head monk is
now having difficulty within his own mind. He
cannot reconcile what you said with what he was
doing. He knows you are right and he knows he was
misleading us. Now his life is difficult."
"Chi Tong, you are well learned in
meditations. You must go deep within yourself and
see yourself as a Master. You must come to see the
real you, your Maker, within you. When you do you
will come to realize you are a part of the
universe as is your Maker. You can do all things.
Once that belief is set like rock within you then
you can do all things. It is a matter of belief at
the soul level, an understanding that the laws are
for you to use."
"And what of my desires?"
"You have been at the monastery long enough to
learn your desires are of man and of the conscious
mind. They serve to lead you down the wrong path,
always. You must continue to want nothing,
realizing now that you can, absolutely, have
anything you wish or need. And that is what you
do. If you are cold you can merely manifest more
clothing or you can create an environmental
envelope within which you set the conditions that
make you comfortable."
"Is there always a way?"

HA! HA! HA!
Yesterday, scientists for the US Drug Administration
suggested that men should take a look at their beer
consumption, considering the results of a recent
analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones
in beer. The theory is that drinking beer makes men
turn into women.
To test the finding, 100 men were fed 8 pints of beer
each. It was then observed that 100% of the men gained
weight, talked excessively without making sense, became
overly emotional, couldn't drive, failed to think
rationally, argued over nothing and went to the
bathroom excessively. No further testing is planned.
