TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How long will they be around? (cicadas)

How in the world do the bugs know when 17 years is up?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What's the difference between Memorial Day and
Veteran's Day?

While Memorial Day honors those who have sacrificed
their lives for their country, Veteran's Day is
dedicated to honor all men and women, both living and
deceased, who have served in the nation's armed forces.
Veteran's Day is celebrated on November 11th,
regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

Is it true that the Northeastern United States is about
to be overrun with billions of 17-year-old cicadas?

Yep. Better head out of town if you don't like large
flying bugs swarming outside your front door - bugs
that are the size of flying shrimp and make an
incredible racket! Actually, as you read this, they may
already be out. The scary looking insects are due to
hatch mid-May to mid-June along the eastern seaboard
west through Indiana and south to Tennessee. Even
though they are just hatching NOW, the insects have
been living underground as nymphs for the past 17
years, getting their nourishment from the sap in tree
roots. Called "periodical" cicadas because they emerge
in cycles of 17 or 13 years (depending on the brood),
the bugs in THIS particular brood, called Brood X, are
particularly numerous.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
_______________

Fear Is A Terrible Master!

I have a lady friend who doesn't like driving. To top it
all off, she has a car that is twenty five years old or
more and is on its last legs.

She tells me that she keeps hearing a funny hum
and it worries her. So, as a favor I took the car for a
drive only to find that anything I could hear was only
regular car noises.

This seemed to disappoint her and somehow I went
down a notch or two in her thinking. Apparently I don't
know as much about cars as she thought.

Rather funny actually. However, she decided to take
the vehicle in for a check up and the mechanic took it
for a ride, coming back with the same answers.

She left the car at the mechanics with instructions to
check the transmission and a few other things.

Then she got her report. After a thorough check the
mechanic said that things were about to go. For
example, he could not say how long the transmission
would last, there was an oil leak that required a new
gasket etc.

The story came down to the mechanic saying he could
fix it if she wanted but everything being fixed up to new
condition would cost her much more than the car was
worth and he questioned the merit of taking such a decision.

This lady has what I call terminal thinking. The mechanic
did not say it would quite running immediately but that
after twenty five years it was on its last legs.

She spent the entire weekend worrying about what she
was going to do. As far as she was concerned the
mechanic for sure told her "the car was going to break
down tomorrow in the middle of rush hour traffic where
you will be unable to pull over and about three thousand
cars will be honking at you and you will not be able to
get out of the car because of the traffic and it will be a
terrific, horrible situation worse by far than death so you
for sure better do something now - - - -!"

Her face was pasty. It was obvious she had not slept well
for two days and her every word was worried. Fear was
running her life and it was out of control. She lost her
capacity to think clearly.

Fear Is A Terrible Master!

Worse yet, and she doesn't even know this, is that fear
shuts down body functions in preparation for defense
or action. What do you think was happening to her body
all weekend while spent in fear? How long do you think
it will be before she ends up in hospital with an illness
she could have prevented by tackling fear immediately?

Fear prevents you from enjoying life. It prevents you
from having good health. It prevents you from doing the
things that must be done today. It criminally saps the
life right out of your veins.

Think about this and consider how many times you
experience fear in any form. What do you do about it?
How do you handle it?

Learn to analyze all things for the purpose of making
decisions. Learn to look fear right in the eye and make
a decision about it. Do whatever you need to do to
eliminate the feeling of fear that races through your
body. Even if you give in to fear, do so and get it over
with, find alternatives. Do not permit fear to run rampant
in your body - it kills.

Fear Is A Terrible Master!

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 1 of 22

A while ago I was asked what I thought about steroids.
And body building. I know absolutely nothing about body
building and discovered I know the same about steroids.
So I decided to learn something in case I was ever
asked that question again. Little did I know what would
follow. As I write health articles, I try to use
subjects or topics that interest both the reader and
me. I didn’t appear to have much of an interest as I
promptly forgot to learn anything about steroids, but
as you know, it’s really been in the news. And each
time I heard more, I realized I had no idea what anyone
was talking about. (This sounds like the true
confessions of a nurse, doesn’t it?) Until I started to
look for definitions of a steroid, I really couldn’t
figure out how it fit into my knowledge of physiology
and anatomy. I had taught some basics of the Endocrine
system, but this didn’t seem to fit. Then “the penny
dropped”! I figured out it was part of the endocrine
system, but as so often happens, the focus is on a very
specific outcome.

That led me to look at all the hormones, of which
steroids are but one classification. The next struggle
I had was to decide if I wanted to do some in-depth
research into steroids or would it be more helpful for
a health article, to give an overview of all hormones.
And that’s what I decided to do. I felt some insight
about hormones would help people understand their
bodies more clearly. And as hormones are essential to
your wellbeing, the more you know, the better off you
are. Eventually I will show how steroids relate to your
body, and I will include a few links to sites that I
found very helpful and interesting. As I read
information on these sites, it amazed me how people
would take one idea and transform it into something
greater than what it was meant to do. By that I mean,
someone discovered anabolic steroids, found they
enhanced a part of the body, and then decided to use
more of it. I shudder when I hear people “drugging” up
their bodies. We know so much now about chemical
effects on it. So why would a person want to ruin their
liver or other parts of their body? It’s beyond me. I
hear the word steroid and I think cataract. Scary
stuff!

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Always. To protect yourself all you need do
is present love unto your assailant. As you keep
calm and broadcast love you confuse him and yet
you see clearly. You will always know what to do
at any given time. It is in the broad casting of
love that you must spend your energies."

Susan worked with Chu Tong for three days. He
came already with an awe and reverence for his
Maker, and he recognized the only way he would
find his Maker was to go inside. He knew
instantly, the moment Susan had spoken in the
monastery, that he must leave and find his Maker
within.

By the time Susan had completed her work Chu
Tong was a fully realized Master.

Susan's return coincided with the evening Mae
and Ng had made the decision to return to the base
camp to meet with Lang Tsu. They were going to
leave at noon the following day.

In the intervening period between Sue's
absence and now Mae had worked with another monk
who was working on finding his Maker. Mae had
shown him the way and then had left, advising she
would return to monitor his progress.

They had their meal and took another evening
walk before turning in for the night. Ng was
getting nervous and anxious. He wanted to return
to his family. He had been out of the saddle for
too long.

"You ready?" Mae asked Ng. All three of them
had gone down for a meal in the morning and then
gone out for a walk. The time was approaching noon
but Mae was aware that Lang Tsu had ridden long
and hard and was even now approaching the camp
where they were to meet.

"Y... yes!" Ng was uncertain. He had traveled
a short distance with the ladies before but this
was big step.

Mae reached out her hand and took Ng's. In
that instant they were in camp awaiting Lang Tsu.
He was visible and riding at full gallup, coming
fast. Lang Tsu, himself was hardly visible,
leaning low on his mount, and pushing hard.

He did not strike his animal with reins or
whip. He did not kick the animal in the flanks in
order to keep him running hard. Lang Tsu was one
with his animals and in leaning over he was
talking to that animal, whispering in his ear, so
to speak. His mount knew what was up and
responded. It was putting everything it had into
it's stride and they were moving fast.

The extra horse Lang Tsu brought for his
father was having trouble keeping up. He didn't
have the benefit of the whisper in his ear.

Lang Tsu could see the trio standing, watching
his approach. It was good to see his father again.
He was now within a half mile and every step of
the horse made the trio larger. Finally, he
whispered calming words into the horse's ear. The
animal began to slow, gently but slow.

By the time Lang Tsu arrived at the camp his
horses were at the walk, doing a slow recovery
from the exertion they had just been through.
It was clear to onlookers Lang Tsu's animals
loved him. Once they were arrived he dismounted
and before he even said hello he went to the
muzzle of his horse and gave the animal a hug. The
animal responded by shaking it's head and licking
Lang Tsu's ear.

Then Lang Tsu went to his father's horse and
did the same. He was a boy, but he had a great
deal of respect for these animals and always
thanked them for what they had done for him. Each
animal responded in kind.

When this was done he came to his father and
then only did he say hello. His father gave him a
hug.

Ng looked at Mae and Susan. He had a gleam in
his eye. He was very proud of his son, and he was
very pleased his son held such respect for his
animals. Out in this land it was the animals that
permitted survival. A man who mistreated his mount
was not only frowned upon but chastised. Lang Tsu,
however, had an uncanny knack of being able to
almost communicate with his animals. It gave him a
mighty edge when it came time to racing. While
other riders would be whipping the sides of their
horses, or kicking their flanks, Lang Tsu would be
leaning over whispering in his mounts ear. The
result was the mount was not distracted by the
striking whip or rein, and was fully able to give
it his best, which was always the animals desire
when Lang Tsu was mounted.

The rendezvous was wonderful. Lang Tsu said
hello to the ladies and all four of them sat down
to enjoy a bite to eat around a camp fire. Lang
Tsu brought everyone up to speed as to happenings
back at the village, and Ng told him of all the
adventures the three of them had.

At Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, a man in civilian
clothes approached an airman and requested a
vehicle pass.

The young airman, fresh out of technical training, asked
to see his military ID, driver's license and his vehicle
registration. Noticing the letters BG on the man's
identification, the new airman asked,
"What's BG stand for -- Big Guy?"

"No," the man replied, leaning over the counter.
"Try Brigadier General."
