TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Are cicadas the same thing as locusts?
Are all the fish in a school of fish related to one another?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How long will they be around? (cicadas)
Fortunately, not too long. Their purpose in life is quite clear:
to transform into adults, reproduce, and die. They'll do this in
a matter of weeks, laying the eggs for the NEXT brood. Six
to eight weeks after the adult cicadas die, their eggs will
hatch and the nymphs will begin burrowing into the ground
to spend THEIR 17 years.
How in the world do the bugs know when 17 years is up?
Scientists really don't know. It's still a mystery.

EMarketer Predicts Graying Of The Internet
by Gavin O'Malley, Friday, May 20, 2005
TWO-THIRDS OF ADULTS AGES 50 to 64 use the Internet,
and as they age, will significantly alter the digital
landscape, according to an eMarketer report released
Thursday. "As boomers age, they will force change upon
the companies that do business online, just as they
have changed other industries at earlier stages of
their lives," wrote eMarketer Senior Analyst and report
author Debra Aho Williamson. "While today's seniors are
a cautious bunch online, the next generation of seniors
is not ... They use the Internet at home and at work,
and they will carry those usage patterns over into the
next phase of their lives."
The current generation of senior citizens age 65 and
older are far less likely to be Internet-savvy, with
just 28 percent of that group using the Web, according
to the report. Williamson attributed the drop-off to
the fact that these seniors retired before online
access became common in the workplace.
The eMarketer report, "Seniors Online: How Aging
Boomers Will Shake Up the Market," cites financial
services, health care, pharmaceuticals, and real estate
as just a few of the categories that will undergo
"massive change" as baby boomers--the oldest of which
will turn 60 in 2006--demand online services to cater
to their expectations.
The report estimates that this year there are some 33.2
million 50- to-64-year-olds online--three times more
than the number of online users ages 65 and older.
Unlike today's seniors, boomers--those born after World
War II between 1946 and 1964--are proficient broadband
Internet users. Forty-four percent of Internet users
ages 50 to 64 have high-speed broadband access,
compared with 28 percent of those ages 65 and older.
As boomers approach the next phase of their lives,
companies will have no choice but to adjust to their
largely ignored demographic, with $1 trillion in
spending power, according to eMarketer.
Both age groups--50 to 64 and 65 and older--expressed a
significant interest in instant messaging, which is
surprising because teens and young adults are typically
assumed to have a monopoly on the medium. Thirty-four
percent of 50- to-64-year-olds IM, apparently, while 27
percent of those 65 and older IM, eMarketer reported.
The older the Internet user, the more willing they are
on average to click on sponsored links, eMarketer
reported. For those age 19 and younger, there is a
50/50 chance that they'll click through on links that
seem relevant; 69 percent of 30- to-39-year-olds said
they would click through; 80 percent of those ages 50
to 59; and just over 90 percent of those age 60 and
older said they'd click on a sponsored link if they
thought it was relevant.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 2 of 22
So lets get on with hormones. Nine in fact. And any of
them, when they are out of balance, can cause all sorts
of problems. Therefore each creates a specialty area
for the medical community. Entire careers are built
around this knowledge and subsequent treatment methods.
In this article we are going to see what each hormone
is and how it relates to your everyday living. You will
learn their area of responsibility and what happens
to you when there is an imbalance. The easiest way to
create an orderly discussion is to start at the top of
your head and work southward. Well start with your
pineal gland; go to the pituitary, then the thyroid and
parathyroid glands, the thymus and adrenal glands, the
pancreas, and lastly the reproductive glands, your
gonads. I will include definitions as we go along. I
wont go into much detail about health (or unhealthy)
conditions. Suffice to say they are all degenerative
conditions. And if you recall the American Medical
Associations recommendations on the use of nutritional
supplements, you may also recall that these conditions
might well be reversible. That would require some
further research and would depend on other things, but
it could well be possible. You have to know where to
look.
Just as your skin is part of the integumentary system
and your heart is part of the cardiovascular system,
your hormones are part of the endocrine system. This
system has two parts: 1) glands and organs and 2) the
hormones that are created and secreted by them. The
function of the hormones, which is a chemical, is to
regulate your body. It all sounds so simple, yet its a
vastly complex scenario. However each gland is assigned
a job and it does it automatically. It pulls out of
the blood stream all the ingredients it requires to
manufacturers the appropriate hormone, and then
releases it back into the blood stream for delivery to
the targeted area. Simple, very practical, effective,
and it works. But you KNOW that there is so much more
to this process! This is a complete oversimplification,
but in essence, that is what happens.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Then Ng reached into his pocket and brought
out an item for Lang Tsu. He took it. It was a
pocket knife. But it was more than that. It was a
symbol he was becoming a man, ready for man's
responsibilities. Upon his return to the village
Lang Tsu would be going through a ceremony all
young Mongol boys went through that signified they
were to join the ranks of men. But at this moment
it was his father saying "Welcome my son. I
recognize you as a man amongst us. Nice work, and
thanks for being my son."
All those things this pocket knife said to
Lang Tsu. His heart was pounding so hard he
thought it would burst. He looked at his father
and he had tears in his eyes.
The moment was not lost on the ladies either.
They knew precisely what was happening. They
recognized the event as one of those moments
between a father and a son that had significance
for all the rest of their lives. They remained
quiet.
When the moment was over, both Mae and Susan
went up to Lang Tsu and hugged him, each giving
him the power that love broadcast.
Lang Tsu was overwhelmed by the moment.
He had not expected this, yet, as a young man
knowing how his village handled such matters he
was fully knowledgeable about them and, like all
young men, wanted to be seen as a man. That his
father did, suddenly, came as a shock to him. In
that moment of time Lang Tsu the boy became Lang
Tsu the man. The change in his attitude was
apparent immediately. He was now expected to take
on the responsibilities of a man and one could see
on his face he was ready, willing and able.
These are the kinds of things tourists miss
when they visit China. This is the reason why Mae
and Susan wanted to walk China as they had.
Through the years they were in China they had
witnessed and participated in hundreds of events
that revealed the people. Mae and Sue felt
privileged to have had the opportunity.
China, to Mae and Sue, was a vast land
inhabited by wonderful people. There was a
diversity of climate and geography that created
wide differences amongst the people, yet there was
a common thread that was woven through all of
them. The Chinese government had somehow
successfully managed to govern those who would
remain tribal, as well as those who wanted to
participate in government. It may have been by
force at one time but that was not near so evident
now. The people were adapted to the system and
worked with it. One thing was clearly evident. If
anyone wanted to attack China, the people would
voluntarily band together to defend their
homeland. They would vehemently expel any
intruder who did not respect them and their ways.
Funny, isn't it? All countries in the world
are like that ... justifiably so.
Mae and Susan were so very happy they had
taken this trip through China. It gave them a
wealth of knowledge and a plethora of friends they
would cherish forever. They were becoming somewhat
melancholy. They well knew that in the bidding
good bye to Ng and to Lang Tsu they were also
bidding good bye to China. They would return to
Lhasa to look in on the monk Mae was working with,
but then they were going to be walking south into
India.
This time with Ng and Lang Tsu represented a
nearing of the end of their time in China and that
point was making itself felt in their hearts.
The four of them remained around the camp fire
and talked. There were all sorts of thoughts going
through each of their minds. The impending good
bye was significant for all of them. Each had
their reasons to want to postpone that moment.
The day was late so Ng and Lang Tsu decided
not to travel. They would stay overnight and
travel in the morning. Mae and Susan did likewise
and so they talked long into the night.
Morning came nonetheless and the time of
departure had arrived. It was with a heavy heart
that both Ng and Lang Tsu packed their animals and
prepared for their journey home.
Mae and Susan, too, were burdened by this
moment.
Finally it arrived. Mae took the first steps.
"We will come to see your family as often as we
can, Ng. We wish upon you a safe journey and a
long and prosperous life. Please give our love and
greetings to Chi Sang and to Ng Tu. Give them our
love and tell them we will come."
With that Mae walked up to Ng and put her arms
around him. As foreign as this was to a Mongol, Ng
allowed it to happen. Mae's power poured into him.
Then she did the same with Lang Tsu. Susan did
likewise.
With evidence of eyes watering the two men
mounted their horses and each looking at the two
ladies, spurred their mounts into a gallup.

HA! HA! HA!
This woman decides to buy a new cupboard that you have
to assemble yourself. Back home she reads the
instructions carefully and assemblesthe cupboard in the
bedroom. It looks really neat. Then, a train
passes and the whole cupboard collapses.
Thinking that she must have done something wrong she
rereads the instructions and reassembles the cupboard.
Then, a train passes and the cupboard collapses again.
Now, fed up she calls customer service. She is told
that this is quite impossible and that they'll send
along a technician to have a look.
The technician arrives and assembles the cupboard.
Then, a train passes and the cupboard collapses.
Completely baffled by this unexpected event, the
technician decides to reassemble the cupboard and get
inside it to see whether he can find out what causes
the cupboard to collapse.
At this point, the woman's husband comes home, sees the
cupboard and says: "That's a nice looking cupboard",
and opens it.
The technician says "You may find this hard to believe,
but I'm just standing here waiting for the next train."
