TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
How are fish in a school able to change direction so quickly?
How thick is the ice in Antarctica?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why do fish travel in schools?
Fish travel in schools for protection (a large school of fish
may be ignored by predators looking for a lone straggler)
and also for feeding (mackerel, for instance, hunt together).
Are the size of the fish in a school consistent?
Yes. Fish may be of different species, but they are usually
the same size (much like the students in a human school
hang out with kids their own size). Larger and smaller fish
break away to form their own schools.

What Are You Listening For?
There are two sides to every conversation. No, not only
yours and theirs as you might think, but also, the
speaking and the listening. So often, our main interest
is in the speakingOURS!
You don't learn much when your mouth is open. Have you
noticed that?
Twenty years ago, 'active listening' was a buzz word.
Those who took it to heart improved their
relationships. It was that simple. Those who did not
made jokes about it.
It was then that the famous words were written: "I know
you think you heard what I said... But do you realize
that what you heard is not what I meant." That's what
comes from poor listening skills. There is a big
difference between hearing and listening!
How do you listen?
THROUGH A FILTER OF DEFENSE? You're always expecting
and listening for blame, a problem, an inadequacy.
You're listening from fear. Before the other person's
mouth is open, you're expecting to have to defend
yourself. This is a communication killer!
LIKE A SURGEON WITH SCALPEL IN HAND? You cleanly
separate the content -the words- from what those words
might mean to the speaker. That keeps you from picking
up the intent of the message. You also might believe
that it keeps you safe from having to respond to that
intent. Haven't you had the experience of someone
parroting back your exact words with a completely
different tone of voice, posture, inflection or
emphasis? Many folks use this, too, as a defense
mechanism.
WITH YOUR HEART OPEN? You listen compassionately
without judgment. You have no intention of changing
anything. The speaker can speak... or even, vent...
safely because you are not jumping in with your point
of view. You are not taking the words personally, have
no reason to defend yourself and can be completely free
to hear what is being said. This is a big step up!
WITH FULL ATTENTION TO PURPOSE? You give your full
attention to the words, the inflection, the posture,
the tone of voice, the facial expressions, the timing.
You take in as much as you can to help you understand
why the person is delivering this particular message at
this particular time... to you, particularly.
You capture the essential reason the person is talking.
There is no 'you' in the equation! You don't jump to
conclusions. You don't formulate your response while
the other is still talking. You listen so well you can
offer a response that is connected with the underlying
reason the person has chosen to talk to you. You are
rare.
WITH A TRUE INTEREST IN FINDING COMMON GROUND?
You're listening for things you agree with, places where your
values, ideas, desires and goals and the speaker's
intersect.
What a concept! This is truly enlightened listening.
I was talking with a coaching client the other day
about just this thing. To make my point, I told him
this story: When I was a teen, I studied piano and was
well on my way to a career in music. In my parents'
quest to make me the best, I was sent sixty miles away
each week to study with a woman who was absolutely
demanding. My fingers often ached from being hit with
an ink stick pen.
Although I chose a different career, one invaluable
thing remains with me from this excellent, if brutal,
teacher. I often entered sight-reading contests. That
is where you are given a previously unseen piece of
music and are expected to play it to the best of your
ability one minute later for an audience. A situation
fraught with tension. It's the moment where skills,
ability, talent and sheer good luck meet!
Miss Tebo said this, "Once you start to play, keep
making beautiful music and let the bad notes fall on
the floor." These few words have impacted every part of
my life!
So, in your communication, keep looking for the good,
for the things you agree with, for the highest intent
of the speaker. Keep that as your focus. Look for ways
that your thinking intersects with that of the speaker.
Be attuned to what you have in common. Listen for what
the speaker is committed to rather than what he or she
does not like. It's more efficient. You move forward
together more effectively.
It's just like that in communication and in listening
particularly. Let the bad notes fall on the floor and
keep the melody moving on.
You'll make much more than beautiful music!

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 4 of 22
Your blood pressure will most likely never be the
120/80 reading. Common sense dictates that sometimes it
changes. AND it does that all day long. That is normal
too. There is much you can do to deal with high blood
pressure (hypertension) before you need to resort to
drugs which are more chemicals being distributed
throughout your body. Another big problem I see, and
this leads me back to the hormone issue, is that many
people have low blood pressure. Low pressure will slow
down the distribution of items in the blood stream.
And it will also make the blood more sluggish. Two of
the major components of blood are oxygen and nutrients.
And a low blood pressure will not deliver these
adequately. That might result in light headedness,
fatigue, or dizziness. If your blood pressure is low,
would it not follow that all your hormones might not be
delivered in a timely fashion? Again just think about
these issues.
Now Lets Cover The Actual Hormones
Hormones are chemical messengers. Most go directly into
your bloodstream. Their job is to regulate your bodys
activities and its chemistry: hence the messenger role
term. It is important to remember that all of these
hormones work in unison and interact. Nothing in your
body works in isolation. I often tell people that your
blood doesnt just go to one area: it connects to every
cell in your body, all day and all night long.
The major glands that make up the human endocrine
system are the pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid,
parathyroid, pancreas, adrenals, and the ones of lesser
importance include the pineal body, and the
reproductive glands (gonads), which include the ovaries
and testes. There are also some digestive ones, but
they pertain to the digestive system. Here are some
sites to give you more detailed information.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
It was getting dark and the two ladies decided
to camp off the side of the road. It was done by
many travelers in this land and one could find
many spots along the road where travelers camped.
Mae and Susan picked one that was uninhabited.
They set up a small camp fire and had a bite to
eat, manifested from their own desires. They were
reminiscing about their journey thus far. It had
been memorable to both of them. They also
remembered it had been a while since they had been
home.
"I wonder if we should go home, then return to
finish our trip?" Mae was inquiring of Susan.
"Mae, I don't know. It might be nice. But I do
want to come back and visit the Golden Temple, New
Delhi and I want to see the Taj Mahal."
"I do, too. Let's go home for a couple weeks
then we can come back and do those things."
"Sounds good to me. They're about 12 hours
behind us. It should be eight in the morning in
Pinehill and six in the village. Come to my place
and we'll stay in Pinehill for a while. Neither of
us has been there for a long time. We might not
even know how to live like that any more." Susan
laughed at this last thought.
Mae laughed too. "Good. Let's go."
With that the two extinguished their fire and
were off. They touched down on Susan's sidewalk
just as Sam Henry was taking out his lawn mower to
do his lawn.
He looked over. "Well, hello you two. It has
been a very long while since I've see you two. How
are you doing?" Sam knew, of course.
"We're fine, Sam. It is good to see you. Is
Alewka in the house? We might want to slip in for
a cup of coffee."
"Please do. Come, let's talk." Sam held out
his hand and simultaneously was making for the
house. He opened the door and let the two ladies
in. "Mom, look who came for coffee."
Alewka came around the corner of the kitchen
and into the hallway where Mae and Susan were.
"Mae! Susan! What a surprise. How are you two.
We were just talking about you. We were even
thinking of coming to see you. How have you been.
Come. Sit. Have a coffee and tell us all about
your journey. It must have been something."
Alewka came over to give the ladies a hug. It
was a real old down home welcome. Mae and Susan
were always glad to be in the Henry household.
Nowhere did they feel more welcome. Here, too,
they were with folks who lived by higher law so
there way no gawking at the "different" people.
Mae and Susan sat. Alewka brought them coffee,
and refilled hers and Sam's. Sam sat at his usual
spot and the four of them talked the day away.
There was much catching up and much relating the
incidents of the ladies trip.
The Henry boys were away on some task they had
been asked to perform at some trouble spot
somewhere, so the four adults had the house to
themselves.
Sam and Alewka sat there in awe. They were
amazed and completely involved in the stories Mae
and Susan were telling. The only interruption was
meal times, otherwise the ladies kept them
spellbound. It was suppertime before the ladies
began letting up.
"That was a wonderful trip. I think maybe we
should follow in the footsteps of these two, Mom."
Sam always called Alewka "Mom".
It was summertime in Pinehill. The trees were
out in full leaf, the gardens were long planted
and the flower beds bid their welcome to all who
passed by. Mae and Susan found there had been
little of no trouble during their absence and that
Pinehill was moving along at it usual rapidly
slow pace. You know what that is. That's where the
people don't change too much either in their
attitudes or tasks, but technology was right up to
the latest and greatest, just enough to keep the
people occupied rather than permit them to go
inside and find their Maker. Yet, in Pinehill
there were many who lived by higher law. The whole
town had examples to follow, if they so chose.
Sam and Alewka were among the first in
Pinehill to learn to live by higher law. They
learned from their daughter Eloise, who had to
learn in order to survive her dangerous trip into
the Amazon jungle.
"How is Eloise, Sam, Alewka?" Susan was the
Henry's next door neighbor for many years and had
seen Sam and Alewka raise their children. Eloise
was her favorite.
"She's fine Sue. The kids are fine, Mazunta is
fine. They were all up here a couple weeks back.
That was the first time since your last visit
here. I think it's been at least a year since you
two have been here, right?"
"I think so. We were pretty wrapped up in what
we were doing." Sue responded.

HA! HA! HA!
A friend of mine was visiting a college, which had
those security call boxes every few hundred feet. If
you were wandering around the campus at night and felt
uneasy about somebody following you, for instance, you
could hit the button and have a security officer come
investigate immediately.
On one of these phones hung a sign that said, "Out of
Order."
Underneath it someone had scrawled, "Keep Running!"
